Mary A. Berger
Mary Ann Berger died Feb. 28, 2003, at a King City care facility. She was 91.
She was born Nov. 2, 1911, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to Robert and Katherine (Retzler) Ziglinski. She moved with her family to New Jersey and later, at the age of 7, to the Jordan/Mt. Angel areas of Oregon, where she received her early education. In 1925, she moved to Newberg.
She traveled the United States and worked as a housekeeper and childcare provider for several years before returning to Newberg. On Dec. 29, 1936, she married Anselm Berger in Newberg. In 1942, the couple moved to Wilsonville where they owned and operated a poultry farm. In 1970, she was semiretired when they ended the poultry business and converted the chicken buildings into the Berger Boat Storage, which she helped operate.
In 1975, she retired and devoted her time to flower gardening and berries. She was a member of St. Cyrils Catholic Church in Wilsonville. According to her family she was devoted to her family and grandchildren and enjoyed the Wilsonville Community Senior Center and traveling to Reno. She also enjoyed her caregiver, Norma, and her friends while living in Wilsonville.
Survivors include: daughters, Bonnie Hostetler of Hubbard and Sandra Wisniewski of Cedar Hills; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Anselm, in March 1991, three brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service was held Thursday St. Cyrils Catholic Church with the Rev. Dan Adams officiating. A private interment was at Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Cyrils Fellowship Hall or the Wilsonville Community Senior Center in care of Attrells Sherwood Chapel, 280 N.W. First St., Sherwood, Oregon 97140.

Kathryn L. Kafalias
Kathryn Louise Kafalias died Feb. 28, 2003, at a Portland care facility. She was 58.
She was born May 29, 1944, in Portland to Larry and Edna (Eberwine) Radke. She grew up in Portland, graduating from David Douglas High School in 1952. She moved to California, where she met Alexandros Kafalias, an immigrant from Athens, Greece. Alexandros and Jathie were married in Riverside, Calif., on Aug. 19, 1963. The couple moved to the Portland area in 1970, and five years later bought eight acres in the foothills above Sherwood, where they built their home.
According to her family, she was a loving person always concerned for others and her home was always full of activities and she was the life of the party. She embraced her husbands Greek way of life and became known for her Spanakopita (spinach pie), and was Yiayia (Grandma) to her grandchildren. She made dolls with porcelain faces, hand sewing their clothes.
After her husbands death in January 2001, she found strength in her Christian faith and friends in on-line chat rooms. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2002 and it was determined to be inoperable in January.
Her dying wish was to see her youngest son, Kosta, graduate from high school. Sherwood High School administrators held a special graduation ceremony in the common room of her hospice center on Feb. 20 and her son received his diploma. She spent most of her last days in her daughters home surrounded by her family.
Survivors include: mother Edna of Sherwood; father Larry Radke of Palm Desert, Calif.; sons, Alex, Theodore and Kosta, all of Tualatin; daughters, Katina Fitch of Canby and Tassia Kafalias of Tualatin; brothers, Bud of Scappoose, Dennis of San Francisco and Edward of Palm Desert, Calif.; half-brother Steven Faulkner of Mulino; sisters, Dolores Bonner of Whidbey Island, Wash., and Susanne Friedman of Walla Walla; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and four grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her brother Ted.
A Trisagion Service was held Thursday at Attrells Sherwood Chapel. A funeral service was held Friday in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland with Father James Retelas officiating. A concluding service followed at Pleasant View in Sherwood.
Memorial contributions may be made to a college fund for Kosta Kafalias in care of Attrells Sherwood Chapel, 280 N.W. First St. Sherwood, Oregon 97140.

Paul S. Jelley
Paul S. Jelley died Feb. 28, 2003, at Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 90.
He was born in Bareilly, India, to missionary parents and came to the United States at the age of 8. He lived in Michigan, Alabama, Oklahoma, California and came to Oregon in 1930, making his home near Mt. Hood. He worked for the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management in Portland.
On March 17, 1933, he married Juanita Shelby in Oklahoma. During World War II he was a welder at the Oregon shipyards. When the war ended he worked for the Portland Public School District for 17 years as a custodian and retired in 1977. He enjoyed gardening, particularly vegetables and flowers.
Survivors include: wife Juanita of Newberg; son James of Vancouver, Wash.; daughters, Sharon Newville of Newberg and Rhoda Ann of Federal Way, Wash.; brothers, Isaac of Renton, Wash., and Steven of India; sisters, Alethia Ashbaugh of Renton and Mary Jackson of Portland; numerous nieces and nephews; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by sons John Mark in 1996 and Larry in 1949.
A private service will be held at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at the First Baptist Church of Newberg with Vancouver Fire Department Chaplain Landis Epp officiating with Pastor Larry Smithwick.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation.

Marie Chapman
Marie Chapman died Feb. 18, 2002. She was 85.
She was born March 10, 1917, in Portland to Charles and Alma Ellis. She lived with her parents in Portland until her marriage. Following grade school, she attended Washington High School and was a member of the First Friends Church in Portland. Upon graduation from high school she entered Portland Bible Institute (now Cascade College). She met Ralph Chapman in college and they were married on Nov. 18, 1941. They continued to live in Portland for a period of time.
The couple were missionaries for 15 years under the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends in Bolivia, where she taught Bible classes and music. She also homeschooled her children along with other responsibilities.
In 1961, the family moved to Newberg where she was a member of the Friends Womens Missionary Fellowship and worked many years at George Fox College (now George Fox University) in the admissions office.
According to her family she will be remembered for her smile, singing voice and her love of music and dedication to the Lord.
Survivors include: daughters, Linnea Stahlnecker of Carlton and Margaret Hadley of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; son Wayne of Rockaway Beach; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and cousin Randall Dicus of Newberg. She was preceded in death by husband, Ralph, in April 2002.
A funeral service was held Feb. 22 at Newberg Friends Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Yearly Meeting Board of Missions, 200 N. Meridian, Newberg, OR 97132.

James N. Aragaki
James N. Aragaki of Newberg died Feb. 27, 2003. He was 66.
He was born March 31, 1936, in Honolulu to Saburo and Gozei (Tengan) Aragaki. He graduated from high school in Honolulu, then from the University of Hawaii in 1959, later earning a masters degree in business administration from the University of Portland. He was a retired major in the U.S. Army, then became a member of the Oregon National Guard. He moved to Newberg in 1981, and met Norma Bliefernich. They were married Nov. 16, 1984. After retiring from the Army he worked for Ticor Title in McMinnville and retired in 2002.
Survivors include: wife Norma of Newberg; daughter Lisa of Bainbridge, Wash.; son Steven of Tokyo; stepsons, Wm. Scott Bliefernich of Portland, Anthony Bliefernich of Newberg and Paul Bliefernich of the U.S. Army stationed in Israel; brothers, Minoru of Hawaii, Wilford of Huntington Beach, Calif., Jerry of Sierra Madre, Calif., and Ronald of Hawaii; sisters, Evelyn and Doris of Hawaii; numerous nieces and nephews and two grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital in care of American Burial and Cremation, 11825 S.W. Pacific Highway, Tigard, OR 97223.

Marian E. Watt
Marian Elaine Watt died Feb. 28, 2003, at her home in Tigard. She was 77.
She was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Denver to Norbert and Frances (Mikley) Hannon. She grew up in Denver and Los Angeles, where she attended Fullerton High School and UCLA. She worked as a stewardess for United Airlines before marrying Stanley Watt on July 1, 1948.
She enjoyed dancing, walking, golfing and traveling, as well as her family and friends. According to them, she will be remembered for her warmth and kindness, love and laughter, courage and strength.
Survivors include: sons, Steven of Tigard and Michael of Beaverton; daughter Christina Hein of Newberg; brother Norbert of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stan, on Dec. 10, 2002.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberg with the Rev. Peter Friesen-Blank officiating. Interment will be private at Valley View Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Legacy Hospice in care of Attrells Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Michael B. Ethridge
Michael Blake Ethridge died Feb. 23, 2003, in Gresham. He was 41.
He was born Aug. 15, 1961 to Edgar and Elaine Linda (Hymer) Ethridge in Newberg.
He received his early education in the Carlton Schools. On Aug. 17, 1985, he married Lilly Olson in Sheridan. He worked for Oregon Blue Print, the City of Yamhill Water Department, City of Carlton as a police officer for three years, was a member of the fire department and worked on the Alaskan Pipe Line. Later, he started a career in truck driving, owning his own semi, until he retired due to health reasons.
He enjoyed hunting, the outdoors, collecting guns and raised his own dogs for hunting bears and cougars. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and cooking. Family members said he was devoted to them.
Survivors include: wife Lilly of Carlton; mother Elaine Linda Duffield; grandmothers, Francis Green of Gresham and Orpha Wright of Sheridan; sons, Jeremy and Michael Jr. of Carlton; brothers, Russell Uken of McMinnville and Eddie Ethridge of Klamath Falls; sisters, Lisa Gadberry and Angela Glavan of Newberg and Tina Uken of Amity; granddaughter Natali; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. His father, Edgar, and his stepfather, Edward Uken, preceded him in death.
A memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Attrells Newberg Chapel with Pastor Bob Summers officiating. Committal is private.

Cecilia B. Forsman
Cecilia Barbara Forsman died Feb. 26, 2003, at a King City care facility. She was 91.
She was born Aug. 6, 1911, in Portland to George and Clara (Metzler) Hartman. She grew up and attended school in Portland and graduated from Immaculata High School. She later worked with the Lipton Company as a comptometer operator. On Feb. 14, 1936, she married Arnold Forsman in Portland and she continued working at the Lipton Company until 1945. In 1948, the couple moved to Tigard where she resided until the present.
She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and was involved in the Altar Society. She also attended St. Peters Catholic Church in Newberg. She was a member of the Tigard Artists Club and the Tigard Garden Club and was a judge of flowers. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and doing volunteer work. She also enjoyed gardening and painting.
Survivors include: daughters, JoAnne Stevens of Newberg and Clare Marie Casey of Buffalo, Wyo.; sons, George Forsman of Aurora and Edward Forsman of Anacortes, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Arnold, in November 1997.
A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Attrells Newberg Chapel. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peters Catholic Church in Newberg with Father Gregory Gage officiating.

Robert R. Detrick
Robert Rob Raymond Detrick II died Jan. 19, 2003, at the Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 39.
He was born Oct. 2, 1963, in Newberg to Robert Sr. and Alice Detrick. At the age of 15 he was selected for the American Youth in Concert Choir which toured in Europe in 1978; their audiences included Pope Paul and Queen Elizabeth. The queen addressed the choir and he was among those able to personally meet the queen mother. He also sang in Carnegie Hall in New York and in church choirs. He was a longtime member of the Assembly of God Church in Amity.
He graduated from high school in 1982 and from ITT College in 1984. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1986. He served as a machinist in nuclear engineering aboard the USS Arkansas, the USS Carl Vincent and the USS Nimitz. He was medically discharged under honorable conditions in December 1991. On Aug. 19, 1993, he married Sharon Williams in Reno. The couple moved to Bremerton, Wash., where he made his home until his death.
Survivors include: wife Sharon of Bremerton; mother Ann of Amity; father Bob of Newberg; daughter Emily Trigg of Agra, Kan.; sister Debbie Pearson of Newberg; brother Jason of Hillsboro; grandmother Lorene Morgan of Amity; seven grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Amity Assembly of God Church. Interment will be held at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Shirley A. Barr
Shirley Ann Barr of Newberg died Jan. 23, 2003, of cancer. She was 65.
She was born June 10, 1937, in Vallejo, Calif., to Arthur and Marion (Wright) Gray and was a retired federal employee.
She enjoyed cross stitching, sewing and ceramic painting.
Survivors include: daughters, Kim McCabe and Edie Salmon of Newberg; sons, Michael and Scott of Newberg; brother Thomas Gray of Bremerton, Wash.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur, mother, Marion, and sister, Regina Joubert.
A private memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at her home.

Frankie G. Griffith
Frankie Gene Griffith died Jan. 19, 2003, in Nevada. He was 64.
He was born Jan. 16, 1939, in Paris, Arkansas, to Carl and Ida (Christy) Griffith. He grew up in Paris and was educated in that area, moving several times. In 1960, he moved to Tacoma and worked at West Tacoma Newsprint. On Oct. 21, 1961, he married Peggy ONeal in Naches, Wash. After his marriage he entered the U.S. Army and served from 1962 to 1964. He was stationed in Korea and Alaska and returned to Tacoma after his discharge. He moved to Newberg in 1968, where he worked at SP Newsprint.
According to his family, he was a devoted member of the First Assembly Of God Church in Newberg and the Oregon N.R.A. He enjoyed going camping with his family. An avid hunter, he used his trained dogs to hunt bear and bobcat. He also enjoyed waterskiing, fishing and RVing.
Survivors include wife Peggy of Newberg; daughters, Angela Gray of Lafayette, Carla Moyer of Newberg, and Helen Griffith of Portland; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, R.C. and Lonnie, sister, Helen, and his parents.
A funeral service was held Tuesday in the First Assembly Of God Church in Newberg with Pastor Curt Rosen officiating. Committal followed in Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum in Newberg.
