Verl O. Parrish
Newberg native Verl Owen Parrish died Sept. 17, 2004, in Seattle. He was 82.
He was born Dec. 5, 1921, to Arthur and Agnes (Powell) Parrish on the Parrish Donation Land Claim (1851) in the Fernwood area of Newberg.
He attended Fernwood Elementary and Newberg High School, graduating in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, spending most his active duty in the South Pacific. He completed his mechanical engineering degree at University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. He worked for Boeing in Seattle, retiring after 38 years in 1984. He married Betty Lou Phillips on Aug. 24, 1948, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
He and his wife were involved at the West Seattle Christian Church and helped develop Puget Sound Christian College in Everett, Wash., Pleasant Valley Christian Camp in Mineral, Wash., and the Christian Evangelistic Association in Edmonds, Wash.
The couple were avid travelers, traversing the United States and making several trips to Europe and the Far East, as well as to the Holy Land. As part of their 50th anniversary celebration in 1998 they took a cruise of fjords and port towns of Norway. For their retirement years they lived in Chandler, Ariz, in the winters and Seattle in the summers.
Survivors include: daughters, Sheryl Cope of Issaquah, Wash., and Gail Parrish of Federal Way, Wash.; brother Dale Parrish of Newberg; grandson Jordan Cope of Issaquah; aunts, Lillie Kendall of Newberg and Wilma Parrish of Turner; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
A celebration of life was held Sept. 26 at West Seattle Christian Church with the Rev. Alan Gardner officiating. Inurnment was private at Pleasant Valley Christian Camp.

Joseph L. Kycek
Former Newberg resident Joseph L. Kycek Jr. died Oct. 16, 2004, in Eureka, Calif. He was 86.
He was born April 14, 1918, in Elma, Wash. He was raised in Newberg and graduated from Pacific College (now George Fox University). He served in the National Guard, primarily as a battery clerk. He worked for Safeway stores while attending school. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946. While enlisted, he performed various clerical jobs and instructed remote-control gunnery in Kingman, Ariz. He was the junior accountant and auditor for the Maritime Commission in 1943.
He started with the Federal Social Security Program in Portland in 1946. He transferred to the Eureka Social Security office in 1948 as a claims examiner. His job from 1952 until retirement was as an insurance field representative. He was responsible for administration of old age, survivors and disability insurance programs for 18 years in Humboldt, Del Norte and Curry counties. He retired after 31 years of government service at the age of 55.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin at Big Lagoon, Calif.
Survivors include: daughter Carol-Jo Payne; son John; granddaughter Patricia Kycek; grandson Travis Brown; great-grandson Devan Brown; brother Vince of Veneta; and nieces and nephews, John, Paddi, Gary and Steven Kycek and Mike, Chris, Patrick and Tonya Case.
He was preceded in death by wife Carol, son Kenneth and grandson Brady Kycek.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 30 at Sanders Funeral Home in Eureka.

George A. Bales
Newberg native George Andrew Bales died Oct. 8, 2004, at Chehalem Care Center in Newberg. He was 83.
He was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School and earned bachelor degrees in art and theology from Pacific College (now George Fox University), and a master's degree in physical education from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
He married Elenita Mardock, then became the first pastor of the new Friends church in Talent. From there he moved to Springfield, Mass., and while there he also was the pastor of the Wyben Community Chapel.
On returning to George Fox College in 1948 he was named athletic director, professor of physical education and head basketball and football coach, training many young men who later became coaches in Oregon and Washington schools. During this time he also was pastor of the United Methodist Church in Dundee.
He and his family moved to Eugene, where he enrolled in a doctoral program in physical education at the University of Oregon. He later became the physical director of the Eugene YMCA.
In 1959 he was called to Kelso, Wash., to be the pastor of the Rose Valley Friends Church. During his 20 years at the church, he and volunteers from the church and community remodeled the church and added a two-story addition. He also led a group that constructed a gym near the church, which was later named George Bales Gymnasium.
He conducted more than 300 weddings and 200 funerals and was active in several community organizations. He was a volunteer and trainer in the Rose Valley Fire Department, PTA president of the Rose Valley School, and headed a project on behalf of the Rose Valley and Carrolls cemeteries to provide funding for their maintenance. He was a volunteer at the Longview, Wash., YMCA, coaching the women's volleyball team to several championships.
After retirement from Rose Valley Friends Church in 1979 he moved to Kalama, Wash., building a house overlooking the Columbia River. A lifelong canoeist and sailor, he organized the Kalama Sailing Club and was its first commodore. He attended the United Methodist Church in Kalama and served as guest minister. He later attended the Longview Community Church.
In 1997 he was inducted into the George Fox University Sports Hall of Fame.
Survivors include: wife Elenita of Newberg; son Dorlan of Wichita, Kan.; daughters, Andrea Bales, Thea Cowley of Portland and Marla Godfrey of Kona, Hawaii; sister Dora Cronyn of Camarillo, Calif.; grandchildren, Micah and Andrew Bales and Carolyn and Ben Cowley; nine nieces and seven nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the George Bales Gym Fund at Rose Valley Friends Church or to the athletic department at George Fox University.

Jim D. Prebe
Former Newberg resident Jim Duane Prebe died Oct. 14, 2004, at a Salem hospital. He was 45.
He was born Oct. 8, 1959, to Edward Jr. and Delores (Walker) Prebe in Lake City, Minn. He moved with his family in 1965 to Tualatin and in 1969 to Sherwood. He attended local schools through the 10th-grade in Sherwood. He helped his father repair small engines and automotive engines. He also drove a shuttle for the McMinnville Charter Airporter for several years and worked at Valley View Memorial Park for a time. On Dec. 21, 1989, he married Martha Hoover in Vancouver, Wash., and they made their home in Newberg. In 1996 they moved to Keizer. In 2002 they moved to Molalla, where they were living at the time of his death.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He enjoyed horses and cattle and had ducks on his farm. He loved his family.
Survivors include: wife Martha of Molalla; son James of Molalla; daughter Tanaia Prebe of Molalla; brothers, Patrick of Newberg, Ronald of McMinnville, Jerry of Salem and Larry of Lake City, Minn.; and sister Jo Aebischer of Newberg.
A vigil service was held Sunday at Attrell's Newberg Chapel. A funeral mass was held Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church with Father Jim Nibler officiating. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Margaret Schwab
Newberg resident Margaret Schwab died Oct. 14, 2004. She was 92.
She was born March 21, 1912, in Roy. She married Zeno Schwab on June 8, 1941. He preceded her in death in 1957. She was a homemaker. She lived in Roy, Gervais, Hillsboro and St. Paul. She lived in Newberg the past 15 years.
She enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting and traveling.
Survivors include: sister Maryann Hermens of Cornelius and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Peter Catholic Church, 2315 N. Main St. A private burial will be held at St. Francis cemetery in Roy.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Peter Church Building fund or the St. Francis cemetery.

Richard W. Gormand
Former Newberg resident Richard William Gormand Jr. died Dec. 7, 2004, at Salem Hospital. He was 68.
He was born Nov. 11, 1936, to Richard and Sarah (DeGrasse) Gormand in Philadelphia, Penn. He grew up and went to school in Jersey, Penn., and later moved to California with family. He joined the U.S. Army in April 1954 in Los Angeles and served during the Korean War. On April 25, 1962, he was honorably discharged at Fort Lewis, Wash.
On Feb. 20, 1971, he married Kathleen Burke in California. They made their home in Torrance and Oceanside, Calif. In August 1976 they moved to Newberg, and in September 2004 they moved to Salem.
He was employed at Excellon, OECO in Portland, and then A-dec. He was an artist and loved to draw, paint and travel. He also enjoyed breeding Dalmatians, Tropical Fish and playing chess.
Survivors include: wife Kathleen of Salem; sons, Thomas Gormand and Michael Burke, both of Newberg; daughters, Windy Gormand of Dundee and Roberta Rinkes of Newberg; brother William of Hemet, Calif.; grandchildren, Hannah Gormand, Isaiah, Jasmine, Roxanne, and Samantha Rinkes and Alexis, Nathan and Haylie Burke; and great-grandsons, Micah and Aidan Rinkes.
He was preceded in death by sister Margaret and grandson Samuel Gormand.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road.

Kenneth I. Weatherly
Newberg resident Kenneth Irvin Weatherly died Dec. 4, 2004, in a Portland hospital. He was 77.
He was born April 2, 1927, to Walter and Dula (Cook) Weatherly in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1945 to November 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from December 1950 to December 1953. He worked with his father in a trucking business and drove for Publishers Paper and Smurfit for more than 30 years. On June 10, 1961, he married Mildred Brentano.
He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping. He raised hound dogs and enjoyed spending time with family.
Survivors include: wife Mildred of Newberg; son Charles of Newberg; daughters, Kelly Ernst of Newberg, Kay Kerr of Salem, Tracy Kruse of Newberg; sisters, Alice Kersey, Elsie Gray, and Carol Long, all of McMinnville; grandchildren, Christopher and Kevin Ernst, Samuel and Alexa Kerr, Nathaniel and Aaron Weatherly, and Kyle and Kadeen Kruse.
Services were held Dec. 10 at St.Peter Catholic Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Center of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg OR 97132.

Emma M. Hamner
Longtime Newberg resdient Emma Mae Hamner died Dec. 7, 2004, in Condon. She was 88.
She was born Sept. 28, 1916, to Ulwin and Ada (Dozier) Denyer in Portland. She grew up on the family farm near Turner except for the few years in the mid-1920s when the family lived on 'peanut hill' in Cashmere, Wash. In 1934 she graduated from Turner High School, where she had played on the girl's basketball team. She majored in home economics and education at Oregon State College (now Oregon State University), graduating with honors in 1938. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and other national scholastic honoraries.
She met her husband, Leonard Allen Hamner, at OSU when they lived in the same boarding house. She and her brother, Jim, lived in the attic and Leonard in the basement. They married Nov. 24, 1938. She worked at OSU for two years following her marriage.
In 1941 she and her husband purchased Graham Drug Store in Newberg. The store soon became Hamner Drug, and was sold in 1968. Her husband preceded her in death in 1981.
She volunteered in many organizations during the more than 63 years she resided in Newberg. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader. She was active in the PTA and in the Central School carnivals. She served as mother advisor for the international Order of Rainbow Girls, Newberg Assembly No. 2. She was an active volunteer at the Newberg Public Library and a member of the Library's Friends organization, as well as the American Association of University Women and the Republican Women's group. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star as a committee member and an officer, serving twice as Worthy Matron for Newberg Chapter No. 55. In addition, she served at the state level as the Grand Representative to New Mexico. She was active in other Masonic organizations, including Amaranth. She was a past president of Chapter L of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Newberg.
Survivors include: son Louis of Condon; daughter Lois Holmes of Redmond; granddaughters, Annette Martinez and Kimberly Ositis; great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Hannah Martinez and Nicholas and Natalie Ositis; five nieces and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by brothers, James and Russell Denyer.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 18 at First United Methodist Church in Newberg. Committal is private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Glenna M. Jansen
Glenna May Jansen died Dec. 7, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 73.
She was born July 9, 1931, to Cecyl and Julia (Tinsley) Muhr Reddington, Neb. She grew up and received her early education in Harrisburg, Neb., and graduated from high school. She attended University of California-Los Angeles, where she earned a teaching degree. On June 7, 1958, she married William Jansen in Culver City, Calif. They moved to Newberg in 1972. She worked for Allen Fruit for a few years. In 1975 she worked at George Fox College (now George Fox University) and was the president's secretary until she retired in 1996. She was called back to help on a part time basis on several occasions.
She and her husband enjoyed traveling. He preceded her in death on April 20, 1997.
She was an active member of West Chehalem Friends Church. She sang in the church choir and with the Sweet Adelines. Her interests included crafts; painting, especially tole painting; gardening; farming; and her animals. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include: sons, Ron and Rayle Jansen, both of Newberg; daughter Raelyne Jansen of Portland; brothers, Doyle Muhr of Portland, Leon Muhr of Manning, Gary Muhr of Dayton, and Larry Muhr of Nebraska; sisters, Darleen Gibbs and Bonnie Libby, both of Newberg; grandchildren, Keven, Krista and Kyle Jansen, and Lindsey Darrow; and great-grandchildren, Trevor Keely, Tulip May Darrow and Alivia Jansen.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond, Marvin and Howard; and sister Lois.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at West Chehalem Friends Church in Newberg with Pastor Paul Almquist officiating. Committal is private at Newberg Friends cemetery.

Francis 'Fanny' Kilgore
Francis 'Fanny' Kilgore of Dayton died Nov. 30, 2004, at the Willamette Valley Medical Center. He was 90.
He was born May 14, 1914, to Elzie and Ina (Glover) Kilgore in Whiteson. He attended Unity Grade School and graduated from Dayton High School in 1935. He worked on the family farm before going to work at Alderman Farms. He later worked for Crabtree Rock Quarry, retiring in 1997. He was a member of the Dayton Fire Department from 1940 to the late 1970s.
He married Lucille Senn on June 4, 1937, in Kelso, Wash. She preceded him in death in 1988.
He enjoyed gardening, hunting, dump trucks, football and spending time with family. He also enjoyed going to the coast, attending the Steam-Up Days in Brooks.
Survivors include: Catherine Laster of Dayton, Ruth Kilgore of Newberg and Charlotte Parker of Elmira; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Dayton Baptist Church. Internment will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum in McMinnville.
