Ida M. Rutschman
Ida Margaret Rutschman, who had friends in the Newberg area, died Feb. 12, 2005, at care facility in McMinnville. She was 87.
She was born Dec. 4, 1917, to Claud and Ellen Coats at their home in Rufus. She attended Rufus High School, before attending Oregon State University, where she met and married Carl Rutschman. They briefly lived in Dufur and Condon before moving to a farm near Dayton, where they resided 61 years.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, traveling, cooking, gardening and reading. She was active in Unionvale Community Church and a member of the Dayton Reading Club and Pleasantdale Community Club. She and her husband traveled the world, visiting Asia, Africa, Mexico and Europe.
Survivors include: husband Carl; children, Carol and Dale Elmblade of Veneta, Terry and Linda Horton of Salem, Frank and Nellie Rutschman of Dayton, and Brent and Jan Biles of Hopewell; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Eakin, Lois Haskell and Nell Melzer; and brother Chet.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jim and Bill, and sister Anne.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Unionvale Community Church.
Contributions may be made toward missions in care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Gayle A. Christenson
Gayle Arlyn Christenson died Feb. 7, 2005, at her Baker City home. He was 73.
He was born in McMinnville in 1931 to Chester and Lola (Johnson) Christenson. He attended school in Newberg and graduated from high school there in 1950. He received training in radio engineering and moved to Salt Lake City to work as a radio announcer. He worked a short time in the oil fields of Wyoming before he moved to Detroit, Oregon. There he went to work for his grandfather, who owned and operated Detroit Phone Company. The town of Detroit was being relocated for the damming of the Santiam River. He worked to rebuild and move the phone system of Detroit and two smaller towns nearby.
He worked at Pacific Northwest Bell as janitor for three months in Portland before moving to a company job in Baker City, where he married Karen Metcalf, a telephone operator, in 1954. He retired from the phone company in Baker in 1989.
He enjoyed gardening, hunting, travel and fishing. He was a brother of the Baker Elks Lodge and coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for several years.
Survivors include: wife Karen of Baker City; sister Norma Sanford of Keizer; daughters, Carol Phillips of Baker City and Joni Sager of Grants Pass; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
An Elks service and celebration of life will be held at the Baker Elks Lodge at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Opal M. Sprecher
Former Newberg resident Opal Marzene Sprecher died Feb. 8, 2005, at a Portland hospital. She was 77.
She was born March 16, 1927 in Eureka, S.D., to Martin and Louise (Kessler) Grosz. She grew up and attended school in several areas as her father was a minister. The family lived in Yankton, S.D., New Leipzig, N.D., and Missoula, Mont.; she graduated from Kulm High School in Kulm, S.D., in 1945. She attended Yankton College and worked in a bank.
On Jan. 4, 1948, she married Daniel Sprecher in New Leipzig, N.D.; they spent their honeymoon moving to Oregon. They remained in Newberg except for two short stays in Taft to further their education. She worked for the News-Register newspaper in McMinnville for several years on a part-time basis and then for the Newberg Graphic for more than 15 years. Her husband preceded her in death in July 1972.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg and was the church organist for many years. She sang with the Sweet Adeline's Chorus, was a volunteer for Red Cross Blood drives and was an avid Bunko player. She also enjoyed traveling, doing crossword puzzles and was a Portland Trail Blazer's fan.
Survivors include: sons, Larry Sprecher of The Dalles and Tom Sprecher of Silverton; daughters, Cheryl Roberts of The Dalles and LuAnn Remington of Hood River; brother Willard Grosz of Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sister, Betty Grosz
A funeral service was held Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg with Pastor Steven Estrem officiating. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Paul Comfort
Former Newberg resident Paul Comfort died of lymphoma on Feb. 4, 2005. He was 63.
He was born April 16, 1941, in Tecumseh, Mich. He served in the Air Force. He moved in about 1986 to Newberg and in 1995 to Portland. He graduated from Portland State University and was a mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service. In 1995 he married Lana Bryson.
He died the same day as his father-in-law, Harry Bryson.
Survivors include: wife Lana; sons, Brian and Charles; mother Nova; sisters, Norma Campbell and Marion Neff; brother Albert; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A joint funeral for him and his father-in-law was held Feb. 11 in the Chapel of City Bible Church in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the City Bible Church Missionary Fund.

Harry Bryson
Harry Bryson, who has family in the Newberg area, died of congestive heart failure Feb. 4, 2005. He was 84.
He was born Feb. 8, 1920, in Rainier. He served in the Army in Iran and Iraq during World War II. In 1968 he moved to Nahcotta, Wash., and was a boatwright for Eastpoint Seafood. In 1941 he married Sylvia Jenne. He moved in 2002 to Portland.
He died the same day as his stepson, former Newberg resident Paul Comfort.
Survivors include: wife Sylvia; daughter Lana Comfort; sons, Jan and Ryan; sister Donita Robertson; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A joint funeral for him and his stepson was held Feb. 11 in the Chapel of City Bible Church in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the City Bible Church Missionary Fund.

Evelyn Allen
Former Newberg resident Evelyn Allen died May 26, 2005, at the Willamette Valley Medical Center. She was 52.
She was born June 1, 1952, to Dick and Martha (Bosma) DeWith in Tillamook. At 2 she moved with her family to Yamhill, graduating from Yamhill-Carlton High School in 1970. She attended the Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) for two years and Oregon State University for three years, earning a home economics and teaching degree.
In May 1979 she married Galen Allen in Newberg. She worked at A-dec Inc. from 1976 to 2001. She and her husband have lived in Dayton for the past four years.
She enjoyed woodworking, needlepoint and traveling. She helped build two homes and provided care for her parents.
Survivors include: husband Galen of Dayton; parents, Dick and Martha DeWith of Yamhill; brother Eddie of Yamhill and niece Shelly Allen.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with Pastor David Case officiating. Committal is private.

Henry Tinner
Henry 'Hank' Adrian Tinner died May 25, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 86.
He was born Oct. 13, 1918, to John and Katherine (Tinner) Tinner in Oregon City. He joined the Army in 1944 and was a combat veteran during World War II; he was awarded three purple hearts. In 1944, he married Joy Palmer. He worked at Armory Automotive for 39 years. He retired in 1986. His wife preceded him in death in 1989. He moved in 2001 to Newberg.
In the mid-1950s, he helped start Portland Little League Number One. He was a member of the Hillsboro Elks Lodge and attended Country Community Church in Sherwood.
Survivors include: daughter Shari Stocki of Sacramento, Calif.; sons, Roby of Portland and Kevin of Newberg; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
A graveside service with interment will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at in Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Lyle C. Barkman
Former Newberg resident Lyle C. Barkman died May 25, 2005, at his home in Sandy. He was 88.
He was born Dec. 26, 1916, to Charlie and Dollie (Merchen) Barkman on a farm near Crofton, Neb., where he graduated from high school. He moved in 1933 to Sisters and in 1934 to Newberg. He graduated in 1939 from Pacific University (now George Fox University).
He served in Battery F of the 218th Field Artillery, 41st Division of the Army during World War II. He served in Australia and New Guinea and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In August 1947 he married Viola Nixon in Newberg. He was called from inactive duty in July 1951 and served until February 1953.
He was employed by General Electric and retired in 1980. His wife preceded him in death in May 1981. In 1992 he married Sara 'Pat' Carmony.
Survivors include: wife Pat of Sandy; sisters, Lucille Gabrysiak of Concord, Calif., and Beulah Ferrell and Nancy Lamb, both of Newberg; and several nieces and nephews.
No public services will be held per his request.

Donald A. Fodge
Newberg resident Donald Avis Fodge died May 22, 2005, at a local care facility. He was 96.
He was born Jan. 27, 1909, to Quincy and Susan (Perry) Fodge in Merna, Neb., where he was educated. He married Maye Hickenbotton in August 1925. He moved in 1937 to Greenleaf, Idaho, where he farmed and raised a family. He joined a Friends church.
He farmed most his life, but, before retiring, he had a large Jersey dairy and sold his mill in Greenleaf and Monitor, Idaho. His wife preceded him in death in 1999.
Survivors include: sons, Quincy of Newberg, Duane of Washougal, Wash., Ervin of Bagdad, Ariz., and Clifton of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters, Nadine Mulkey of Silverton and Janice Jennings of Oregon City.
He was preceded in death by: granddaughter Tracy in 2000, grandson Richard in 1953 and great-grandson Justin in 1979.
A graveside service was held May 26 at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. June 18 at Chehalem Friends Church in Newberg.

Gustavo A. Schwartz Sr.
Newberg resident Gustavo 'Gus' A. Schwarz Sr. died May 21, 2005. He was 85.
He was born Dec. 15, 1919, to Arthur and Maria (Rojas) Schwarz in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He married Mercedes Vielman in October 1945 in Guatemala.
He moved to America in 1955; his family settled in Los Angeles. The family moved to Newberg in 1976. He worked for Scotty's Auto Body in Hillsboro, retiring in 1985. He kept busy on his farm in Newberg.
He enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of the St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.
Survivors include: wife Mercedes of Newberg; sons, Richard and Gus Jr., both of Newberg; daughters, Patricia Lannutti of Philadelphia and Marie Mates of Portland; sister Stella Diaz of Guatemala City; brother Carlos of Guatemala City; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A mass of Christian burial was held May 25 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg. Private interment was at Valley View cemetery in Newberg.
