Marion F. Hill
Former Newberg resident Marion Francis Hill died of a heart attack April 29, 2005, in Arizona. He was 57.
He was born June 20, 1947, to Francis and Viola (Heim) Hill in Clarion, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Dows, Iowa. He graduated from Dows Community School in 1965. He married Sharon Stephens in June 1977 in Coos Bay. He moved to Newberg in 1990 and Dayton in 2003.
He drove truck for 35 years, traveling to every state in the contiguous United States, as well as Alaska and Canada. He died driving his truck, family members said.
Survivors include: wife Sharon on Dayton; daughters, Tonya Hotz of Tampa, Fla., Becky Rogers of Hawaii and Kristy Hill-Edwards of Lafayette; mother Viola of Dows; sister Diane Ingraham of Webster City; stepchildren, Cody Lowe of Newberg, Victoria Stephens of Oregon, Dawn Guyer of The Netherlands, Velvet Stephens of Illinois and Venetta Hanks of Temple, Okla.; 25 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father and an infant daughter.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lafayette Community Church with Pastor Jim Peterson officiating. Burial is at Graceland cemetery in Webster City, Iowa.

Vincent E. Haworth
Former Newberg resident Vincent Earle Haworth died May 6, 2005. He was 91.
He was born Jan. 24, 1914, to George and Caroline (Johnson) in Wrey, Colo., where he lived until he was 17. He and a cousin jumped a train to Oregon via California. He lived with his sister in Newberg. He attended diesel school in California. He worked road construction in eastern Oregon, helping build various highways including the Santiam Highway and the Columbia Gorge highway.
On Sept. 10, 1938, he married Joanna Stillwell in Newberg. They worked in Newberg. The couple later settled in the Sheridan area. They moved again in 1946 to Rickreall, where he built a farm house using only hand tools, as there was no electricity. He farmed the land and worked as a mechanic at Rickreall Farm Supply, retiring in 1972. His wife preceded him in death.
He enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting, fishing, logging, wood working, traveling and his family.
Survivors include: daughter Caroline Calhoun of Stayton; sons, Vincent of McMinnville and Robert of Perrydale; brothers, George and Gurney, both of Albany; sisters, Dorothy Poitras and Darlene Pankella, both of Albany, Doris Hudson of Hillsboro, Lola Stillwell of Myrtle Point and Madeline Midgarden of Des Moines, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: one brother; five sisters; grandson Stephen Calhoun and great-grandson Maxwell Haworth.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Entombment will follow in the Restlawn Mausoleum in Salem.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Doernbecher Children's Hospital in care of Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center, 287 S.W. Washington St., Dallas.

Howard A. Michaelis
Howard Arthur Michaelis died May 7, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 85.
He was born Jan. 9, 1920, to Arthur and Anna (Mauer) Michaelis in Norfolk, Neb. He moved with his family to Oregon in 1936. On Feb. 19, 1942, he married Doris Rhodes in Vancouver, Wash. In February 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served four years during World War II. In 1959, the couple moved to Yamhill, where he has since resided.
He owned and operated a logging company until his retirement in 1975. His wife preceded him in death in January 2004.
He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and spending time with family.
Survivors include: son Russell of Yamhill; daughter Jeannette Straw of Yamhill; brother James of Bend; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Charlotte Morgan, a brother and two sisters.
A graveside service was held May 13 at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville with the Rev. Bard Marshall officiating.

Clarence O. Baker
Former Newberg resident Clarence 'Tunie' Oliver Baker died May 10, 2005, at a Portland hospital. He was 75.
He was born Dec. 7, 1929, to Jack and Nellie (Smith) Baker in Seneca, Mo. He grew up and went to school in Seneca and Meosho, Mo. The family moved to Dayton in 1941 and he finished his education in the Dayton and Amity schools. He joined the U.S. Army in 1949 and served three years in Okinawa.
Upon his discharge, he returned to Grand Island. On Nov. 7, 1952, he married Willetta Hoard. They built their first home at Grand Island. They later moved to Newberg, where he worked for City Tire Company. In 1964, he injured his back, leaving him partially paralyzed and unable to work.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending time at a home in Pacific City.
Survivors include: wife Willetta of Dundee; daughters, Terri Matthews of Dundee, Valerie Gardner of McMinnville and Vickie Hooper and Lisa Cook, both of Newberg; brothers, Robert of Newberg, Garland of Wyandotte, Okla., and Jack of Seneca, Mo.; sister Mary Iseli of Meosho, Mo.; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son David; brothers Richard and Leonard and sister Marie Baker.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with Larry Christenson officiating. Committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Shirley M. Wells
Shirley M. Wells died May 10, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 75.
She was born Jan. 26, 1930, to Edmond and Audrey (Sanderson) Brown in Milnor, N.D., where she grew up and went to school. On Oct. 8, 1947, she married Darrell Wells in Milnor. They lived in the area until 1955, when they moved to Oregon. They lived in Milwaukie for 10 years before moving to Newberg in 1965. Her husband preceded her in death in January 1977. She owned and operated the Sherwood Peddler Restaurant and Lounge until selling it in 1993.
She enjoyed spending time at home and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include: son Duane of Newberg; sister, Lois Aiello of California; grandchildren, Bryan Wells and Angelia Baca, both of Las Vegas; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.
A graveside service with interment will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Scott Crum officiating.

Cecilia Parker
Cecilia Parker died May 10, 2005, at her Newberg home. She was 84.
She was born Feb. 28, 1921, to Edward and Teresa (Motschenbacher) Beal in Newberg. She graduated from Newberg High School in 1938. On Sept. 6, 1942, she married Arthur Johnson in Seattle, where they lived for six years. In 1948 they moved to Gresham. Two years later, her husband died in an accident.
On Nov. 1, 1951, she married Vernon Porter. In 1954, they moved to Hawaii, where they lived until 1960. They moved to George, Wash., to help start a new land development and an insurance business. Twelve years later, they moved to Newberg, where she has since resided. Her husband preceded her in death in 1976.
She was in the banking business for more than 30 years; her last employer was Ben Franklin Savings and Loan. She helped run several small businesses. She volunteered at the Thrift Shop in Newberg.
She enjoyed bowling, swimming, card games, bingo, square and round dancing.
Survivors include: seven nieces, two nephews and caretaker Bob Gleason.
She was preceded in death by: sisters, Helen Gastineau and Edene Barbour.
No services were held per her request.

Ann I. Smith
Former Newberg resident Ann Isabel Smith died April 30, 2005, at a Dallas care facility. She was 87.
She was born June 18, 1917, to John and Mary (Brown) Alexander in Terra Haute, Ind. She grew up and received her early education in Harmony, Ind. On May 11, 1941, Ann married Eugene Paul Smith in Indiana. She was a receptionist and bookkeeper at a nursing registry in Illinois. In spring 1982 the couple moved to Oregon and has resided in the Newberg and Dallas areas for the past nine years.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, keeping her home and walking.
Survivors include: husband Paul Smith of Dallas; sons, John of Newberg and Gene of Cody, Wyo.; grandchildren, Melissa and Erin Smith.
She was preceded in death by four brothers.
There will be no service per a request of the family. Committal is private at Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Eleanor A. Gilliam
Newberg resident Eleanor Ann Gilliam died May 1, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 87.
She was born Sept. 17, 1921, to William and Nina (Bock) Behrens in San Bernardino, Calif. She grew up and received her early education in San Bernardino, where she graduated from high school. She worked for Bendix Corporation as an office manager until her retirement. She moved to Red Bluff, Calif., for 12 years. Later she relocated to Siletz, where she made her home until 1998, when she moved to Newberg where she has since resided.
She was an avid sport fan and enjoyed reading.
Survivors include: sons, Michael Gates of Newberg and Paul Gilliam of Siletz; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister.
No services are being held per a request of the family. Committal was private.

Lena L. Case
Former Newberg resident Lena Lorraine Case died May 3, 2005, at a Portland care facility. She was 78.
She was born June 14, 1926, to Otto and Eleanor (Nelson) Kinsey in South Dakota. When she was 8 she moved to Newberg, where she attended local schools, graduating from Newberg High School in 1944. She held several jobs in the area.
On Dec. 26, 1950, she married Elmer Case in Vancouver, Wash. The couple made their first home in San Diego, Calif., and with him serving in the Navy they traveled to many naval bases during the 18 years he was enlisted. After his discharge they returned to the Portland area, later relocating to Newberg and then to the Fairview area, where Lena has resided for the past 27 years. Her husband preceded her in death in February 1995.
Survivors include: daughter Ramona East of Gresham; brother Ron Kinsey of Los Angeles; six nieces and five nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
A graveside service was held May 6 at Newberg Friends cemetery with Pastor David Case officiating.

Lyle E. Lee
Former Dayton resident Lyle Ernest Lee died April 25, 2005, at Jennings McCall Center in Forest Grove. He was 84.
He was born Aug. 12, 1920, to Ernest Lee and Lillie Boehmke. He graduated from Salem High School in 1938. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Jefferson Wilderness, blazing trails still in use today. On Nov. 28, 1940, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in Vancouver, Wash., and was stationed at Hamilton Field in California.
During World War II, he was shipped out to the Philippines and captured by the Japanese. He lived through the Bataan Death March and three and a half years in various Japanese prison camps. When World War II was over, he returned to a hero's welcome in Salem, where he met Gayle Hyde. They married on May 15, 1946, in Vancouver, Wash.
He spent 25 more years in the Air Force, stationed in Ohio, Italy, France, Spokane and Spain. During his service he worked with NATO training soldiers in European countries on how to maintain American aircraft.
He retired from the Air Force on April 1, 1964, and spent the next 40 years on his wife's family farm in Dayton. His wife preceded him in death in October 1988. He lived at the Dayton farm until shortly before his death, enjoying a close friendship with Emma Hamner of Newberg.
He was a lifetime member of Jacob Mayer Lodge #108 and a past patron of the Electa Chapter of the order of the Easter Star in Dayton. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting all over the world. He also enjoyed reading, especially archaeological material, and never missed the sports page or working the crossword puzzle.
Survivors include: daughters, Linda Fee of Forest Grove, Terra Cheek of Tigard and Lara Parr and Darra Hogan, both of Portland; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by stepsister Lucille Hobolt and sister Naomi Ball.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. May 9 at Evergreen Memorial cemetery in McMinnville with the Rev. Kyle French officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Washington County or the National Wildlife Foundation in care of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville, OR 97128.
