Clara E. Nelson
Former Dundee resident Clara E. Nelson died May 1, 2005 of complications from pneumonia and cardiovascular disease. She was 93.
She was born Nov. 30, 1912, to Perry and Catherine Miller in Norris City, Ill. Her family moved to Oregon when she was 2 years old. After a short time in Hillsboro, the family settled in Dundee. She graduated from Dundee High School in 1932.
On July 1, 1934, she married Arthur Nelson, a local she met at Dundee Methodist Church. They built a house on a three-acre plot her husband purchased from his mother. They lived there for more than 20 years. She and her husband moved to a home in King City Retirement Community.
Shortly after retirement the couple took a four-month trip around the world. She enjoyed family gatherings.
She was a member of the Methodist Church, both in Dundee and in Newberg, as well as the Newberg Chapter #55 of the Eastern Star, where she held many offices, including worthy matron.
Survivors include: husband Arthur of King City; daughter Joyce of Tualatin; son David of Tigard; sisters, Donna and Gertrude of King City; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Viewing and visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 N. Villa Road. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Newberg Methodist Church with Pastor Jane Shaffer officiating. A private graveside service will be at the Dundee Pioneer cemetery.

Gerald H. Newell
Gerald 'Jud' Hall Newell of Newberg died April 28, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 90.
He was born Feb. 25, 1915, to Clifford and Bertha Newell. He grew up in Greenville, Pa., and graduated from Greenville High School in 1934. He attended Thiel College and business college. He worked a variety of jobs during the Depression, including as a lifeguard. He eventually followed his father into working for the Bessemer-Lake Erie Railroad. He served in the Navy in the Atlantic Theater of World War II.
On Sept. 25, 1946, he married Catherine Sturges in Butler, Pa. They moved to Erie, Pa., where they lived 10 years. They moved in 1956 to Phoenix, Ariz., where they lived for 43 years. He worked for several credit unions before joining the accounting department for the city of Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport in 1964. He retired in 1978 and moved to Newberg in 1999.
He enjoyed entertaining people with comedy and music. As a young man he was a member of big bands, including Roy Seeley and his Bluebirds, as a singer, drummer and master of ceremonies. He enjoyed sports, reading, American history and listing to big band music.
He was a lifelong church member, often serving as deacon, choir member and church officer. He most recently attended Newberg Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include: wife Catherine of Newberg; sons, Cliff and Roger, both of Newberg; sister Betty Fetterly of Little Rock, Ark.; granddaughters, Marilee of St. Andrews, Scotland, and Melanie of Seattle; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sisters Dorothy Vance and Alice Bennett.
A private service was held today (Wednesday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Gale A. Putnam
A former Newberg resident, the Rev. Gale A. Putnam, died April 10, 2005, in Berkeley, Calif. He was 89.
He was born Dec. 4, 1915, to Lewis and Lillian Putnam in Portland. He moved to Newberg with his family in 1928. He was active in sports, especially basketball. He graduated from Newberg Union High School. He received degrees from Northwest Nazarene College and Western Baptist Theological Seminary. He was pastor of Nazarene and Methodist churches in Coos Bay, Newport (Wash.), Stayton and Portland. He moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1958. He moved to Portland in 1972 and to Berkeley in 2002 to be near his daughter.
He married Althea Fenwick in 1941; she preceded him in death in 1985. He married Sybil K. in 1986.
Survivors include: wife Sybil; daughters, Cherie Wilson of Berkeley, Calif., and Susan Jensen of Warren; and four nieces and nephews, including Carol Morter of Newberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and three brothers.
A memorial service was held April 16 in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes in Portland. A graveside service followed at Dundee Pioneer cemetery.

Jerelyn S. Leathers
Former Newberg resident Jerelyn Sue Leathers died April 21, 2005, at her home in McMinnville. She was 56.
She was born May 24, 1948, to Dale and Helen Kinder in Martinsville, Ind. She was raised in Santa Monica, Calif., and graduated from Ernest Reghetti High School in 1966. She moved to Newberg in 1973 and worked for GTE. She moved to McMinnville in 1979. She retired in 1999.
She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, where she was active with the children, women's ministries and missions. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include: husband Joseph Leathers of McMinnville; son Joe Zavala of Ashland; daughters, Monique Bushnell of Camas, Wash., Jana Barnbrook of Beaverton, Carman Zavala of McMinnville, Tiffany Watson of Downey, Calif., and Jennifer Leathers of Hayward, Calif.; parents, Dale and Helen Kinder of Newberg; sisters, Norma Miles of Bellevue, Wash., and Sharon Springer of Grants Pass; and six grandchildren.
A service was held April 29 at Bethel Baptist Church in McMinnville with pastors Rich Bryson, Henry Wilson and Bardwell Marshall officiating. Private interment was at Hopewell cemetery in Hopewell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Missionary Fund.

Gladys Nelson
Former Newberg resident Gladys Nelson died April 25, 2005, at her home in McMinnville. She was 94.
She was born Oct. 5, 1910, to Johnnie and Alma (Tow) Bench in Eldridge, Mo. She moved at a young age to Oregon, where she graduated from Amity High School in 1928. She sold Stanley Products for many years, worked as a salesperson for Newberry's in Portland and was a homemaker.
On June 16, 1931, she married Carl Nelson in McMinnville. They made their home in Newberg until 1942. They moved to Garden Home in 1959 and returned to Newberg in 1985. Her husband preceded her in death in May 1990. She moved to Osprey Pointe in McMinnville in July 2003.
She enjoyed being with her family, sewing, crossword puzzles, fishing and traveling.
Survivors include: son Elmer Nelson of Newberg; brother Marion Bench of Portland; granddaughters, Gerry Frame of Stayton and Kathy Blume of Newberg; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brother Melvin Bench and sister Helen Schultz.
There will be no funeral. Private family interment was held April 29 at Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum in Newberg.

Harry E. Rowland
Newberg native Harry Elmer Rowland died April 26, 2005, at Hampton House in McMinnville. He was 90.
He was born June 12, 1914, to Frank and Mary (Jensen) Rowland in Newberg, where he grew up and attended high school. After high school he worked as a logger. He married Cora Payne on June 12, 1935. He worked on the John Day Dam for a few years. He moved to McMinnville. He worked as a construction worker for 35 years for C.C. Meisel Company in Amity. He worked for 10 years with Jim Pointer Company, retiring in 1979.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and his pet frog.
Survivors include: wife Cora of McMinnville: son LaRoy of Newberg; daughters, Peggy Burch of McMinnville and Arla Scott of Tigard; brother George of Newberg; sisters, Marge Adolf of Soldotna, Ark., Edna Liebel of Portland and Bertha Rowland of Vancouver, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today (Saturday) and Sunday at the Chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans St. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery in McMinnville.

Cecil A. Belt
Cecil Alberta Belt died April 24, 2005, at her home in Yamhill. She was 96.
She was born Nov. 11, 1908, to Charles and Lucy (Meekins) Breeden in Davenport, Iowa. She moved to Oregon with her family when she was 8 years old. After living in several places in Oregon, she settled in Yamhill. She married George Belt on June 12, 1926, in McMinnville.
She enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting, camping and fishing. She also enjoyed cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include: son Harold Belt of Yamhill; daughter Lola Whitman of Newberg; sisters, Leotia Bush of Yamhill, Hazel Miller of Salem, Jessie Clayton of Scio and Pearl Embree of Dallas; and 15 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, George, in 1979; sons, Arlie and Paul; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters.
A service was held April 25 at Pike cemetery with Bishop Bob Smith officiating.

Maxine A. Slack
Maxine Adele Slack died April 18, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 76.
She was born April 19, 1928, to Frederick and Arleta (Smith) Reinke in Willamette. She moved at a young age to Washougal, Wash., where she graduated from Washougal High School. She moved to Goldendale, Wash., where she worked in a movie theater. She returned to Portland and worked for Jensen Swimsuit Company, until she relocated to Beaverton and in 1962 worked for Techtronics. On July 1, 1969, she married Roy Slack in Beaverton. They made their home there until 1973, when they returned to the Portland area.
Her husband preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1976. She moved to Aloha in 1980 and then settled in Dundee in 1977, where she has since resided. She was a child-care provider for years.
She enjoyed camping, fishing and the beach. Her family said she was a devoted grandmother who loved visiting family.
Survivors include: daughter Robin Luttrell of Dundee; granddaughter Lauren Luttrell of Dundee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers Rodger Wright and Sonny 'Fritz' Reinke.

Emilie K. Hoard
Dundee resident Emilie Kay Hoard died April 17, 2005, at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Portland. She was 60.
She was born July 18, 1944, to Adam and Elsie (Steinke) Leno in Bismarck, N.D. She was raised and educated in Tuttle, Wilton and Fargo, N.D., and graduated from Moorhead High School in Moorhead, Minn. She earned a business degree from Bismarck Junior College and a degree in social work from the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. She earned a licensed clinical social worker credential, as well.
In 1967 she married Richard Hoard in Bellaire, Texas. She served as an assistant librarian at the Kidder County library in Steele, N.D., and the secretary of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She lived in Wahpeton from September 1996 through May 2001, when she moved to Dundee to be near family. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton. In Dundee, she resided at the Rose Park Senior Apartments and enjoyed bingo, game nights and potlucks.
Survivors include: daughters, Elizabeth Paulson and Lori Edmonds of Sherwood; son Anthony of Sherwood; grandson Justin of Sherwood; brother Wendell Leno of Prior Lake, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Manfred Leno of Fargo, N.D., Ernest Leno of Tuttle/Bismarck, N.D., and Gerald Leno of Colorado.
A memorial service will be held May 28 at Tuttle English Lutheran Church in Tuttle, N.D. Interment will be at Langedahl cemetery in rural Tuttle.

Earline J. Shearer
Earline Jay Shearer, wife of a Newberg native, died of cancer on April 21, 2005, in Bremerton, Wash. She was 54.
She was born Sept. 6, 1950, to Earl Eddy and Shirley Eckerson in McMinnville. She graduated from McMinnville High School. On Feb. 28, 1967, she married Michael Shearer, a Newberg native and Newberg High School graduate. She traveled with him for 20 years during his Navy career.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed her cats, watching birds, crocheting and gardening.
Survivors include: husband Michael; son Douglas of Oceanside, Calif.; daughter Linda Holland of Bremerton; sisters, Evyline Huber and Tina Arnold, both of Lafayette, Orlena Davey of Newberg and Rozann Armstrong of Palmyra, Va.; brother Richard Jewell of Lafayette and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, by brother Robin Jewell and sister Treva Jewell.
Disposition will be private in Bremerton.

Brian R. Mills
Brian Ray Mills of Newberg died April 12, 2005, at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. He was 51.
He was born Sept. 21, 1953, to Elvin and Marie (Cooley) Mills in McMinnville. He graduated from Newberg High School and attended auto body school at Portland Community College. He owned and operated Springbrook Autobody in Newberg.
He married Nancy Beecroft on May 21, 1977. They lived briefly in Aloha and Sheridan before settling in Newberg.
He enjoyed waterskiing, camping, playing cards and being a grandfather.
Survivors include: wife Nancy of Newberg; daughters, Brigitte of Newberg and Kelly of Nashville, Tenn.; brothers, Mike of Tigard and David of Bend; sister Linda Cox of Oakdale, Calif.; and granddaughters, Ally and Annabelle Mills.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie.
Services were private.
