Lauren Nelson

1915-2003
Lauren Donald "Larry" Nelson of Cottage Grove died June 8. He was 87.
Nelson was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Bridge to Donald and Laura Hauser Nelson. He married Marybeth Barton in Washington on Aug. 12, 1944.
He moved to Portland in 1943 and settled in Cottage Grove 25 years ago.
He grew up working in the woods as a logger, where he learned many jobs. He also worked in the Portland shipyards.
He enjoyed sports and was an accomplished bowler and golfer. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica at church and other occasions. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church and a Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Norma Wetzell of Tigard; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
No service is planned. Burial will be at Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene. Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Max Allen

1921-2003
Former Cottage Grove resident Max L. Allen of Eugene died April 9 of cancer. He was 81.
Allen was born Nov. 20, 1921, in Chanute, Kan., to Joseph and Clara Gish Allen. He married Verna Kimball on May 25, 1946.
He lived in Sedan, Kan., Redding, Calif., Grants Pass, and Albert Lea, Minn., before moving to this area 36 years ago. He lived in Cottage Grove before settling in Eugene.
He attended Kansas State College. He served in the Army for four years during World War II and was stationed in North Africa and the South Pacific. He worked as a manager at Weyerhaeuser for 30 years and was once recognized as manager of the year. He was a life member of Hoo-Hoo International, a fraternal society of the forest products industry.
His interests included fishing, hunting, traveling, University of Oregon sports and investing. He was a life-member of the Elks.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Bruce of Eugene; a daughter, Barbara Zentner of Springfield; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
No service is planned. England's Eugene Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart.

Polly Luce

1922-2003
A celebration of life will be held March 10 for "Polly" Dulcine Luce of Dorena, who died March 1 of age-related causes. She was 80.
She was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Gagen, Wis., to Valentine and Isabelle Macheichok. She grew up and attended school in Wisconsin, graduating from Crandon High School.
She married Henry "Hank" Luce in Las Vegas, Nev., on July 6, 1944. He died Feb. 5, 1983.
She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Cottage Grove. Her family and church were foremost in her life. She was a homemaker and enjoyed camping, particularly at the coast. She was an accomplished cook known for making excellent bread.
Luce is survived by two sons, Terry of Eugene and Hank and wife Jean of Midwest City, Okla.; four daughters, Ede and husband Gary Heykamp of Dorena, Myra and husband Jim Yourdon of Cottage Grove, Peggy and husband K.O. Towery of Arizona City, Ariz., and Kathy and husband Sean of Cottage Grove; two sisters, Edith Karr of Bradenton, Fla., and Julietta Howe of Ely, Minn.; a brother, Harry Macheichok of Rhinelander, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A sister, Violetta Luce, preceded her in death.
Monday's celebration of life will be 2 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Cottage Grove. A private cremation was held under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.

Linda Willey

1956-2003
Eugene resident Linda D. Willey, who was born in Cottage Grove, died Jan. 3 of a stroke. She was 46.
Ms. Willey was born Dec. 29, 1956, in Cottage Grove to Donald and Sally Arnalz Willey.
She attended Springfield High School. She lived in New Bern, N.C., before returning to this area in 1993. She enjoyed camping, fishing and rock hounding. She especially enjoyed shopping for second-hand goods. She was a member of the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars in Springfield.
Survivors include her parents of Springfield; a son, Derek Willey of Eugene; a brother, Douglas Willey of Springfield; and two sisters, Janet Sullivan and Phyllis Doane, both of Springfield.
A celebration of life potluck was held Jan. 10 at the Springfield Moose Lodge. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Norman A. Johnson

1922-2002
Cottage Grove resident Norman "Arnie" Arnold Johnson, 78, died April 12, 2002, of age-related causes.
He was born Dec. 7, 1922, in River Falls, Wis., to Clarence and Geneva Johnson. After receiving a high school education, Mr. Johnson served six years in the U.S. Navy, receiving an honorable discharge.
He then traveled the United States, Canada and Mexico working in oilfields. He settled in Billings, Mont., as a rancher, and He was an avid horseshoe pitcher and was state champion in Montana in 1983. He also enjoyed collecting coins. He retired in 1985, moving to Cottage Grove in 1988.
Mr. Johnson married Dona "Pat" Stoltenberg in Cody, Wyo., on Aug. 28, 1967, a 14-year union that produced a daughter, Nikki Jolene Johnson. His ex-wife preceded him in death in March 1988, and their daughter preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 1998.
He is survived by three grandchildren, Kala, Gavin and Peace.
A graveside inurnment was held April 17 at Greenwood Cemetery. Major Family Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Peggy M. Raasch

1921-2001
Peggy R. Miller Raasch of Cottage Grove died April 19, 2001, of complications resulting from a stroke. She was 79.
She was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Scappoose to Elmer and Agnes (Evans) Smith. She graduated from high school in Hood River.
In 1943 she married Warren M. Miller in Hood River, and remained with him until his death. She made her permanent residence in Cottage Grove in 1965.
She married Vernon A. Raasch in Mountain Home, Idaho on June 3, 1970.
She was a homemaker and mother, whose interests included flowers, sewing and time spent with and for her grandchildren. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Baptist Church and Ladies Aid of Trinity Lutheran.
She was the recipient of numerous needlecraft awards at the Western Oregon Exposition.
Her husband preceded her in death on April 10, 1997.
She is survived by two daughters, Janet K. Six of Ramona, Calif. and Sue Stenerson of Albany; a sister, Pearl Owenby of Cottage Grove; a daughter-in-law, Luana Raasch of Cottage Grove; a niece, Dixie Parker of Eugene; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held April 21, 2001, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Inurnment was at Fir Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Building Fund.
