Marian Leach Durrell

Obit dated: October 19, 2002

Marian Leach Durrell, 89, of Brookings, died Oct. 7, 2002, at an adult foster care home of natural causes.

She was born July 24, 1913, in East Bridgewater, Mass., to Charles and Margery Leach. She spent her early years in East Bridgewater, and after schooling she worked in home service and child care in Boston.

She met William G. Durrell and they dated for four years. They were married in Whitman, Mass., Oct. 17, 1937.

They lived most of their life in Boston where Mr. Durrell worked for Walter Baker Chocolate Factory/ General Foods as a chocolate sampling technician.

Mrs. Durrell spent her time as a homemaker and in the employment of the National Headquarters of the Salvation Army as a cook and lunchroom hostess so her daughter could attend a private school.

After retirement in 1977, they moved to Sacramento, Calif., and in 1978, moved to Brookings along with Linda and her family.

Mrs. Durrell worked and volunteered for 10 years as a teacher's aide at Kalmiopsis Elementary School, where she shared her love for children. She attended Grace Bible Church for 24 years and served with a ladies missionary group. She served as a Salvation Army bell ringer and was active at the Chetco Senior Center.

Mrs. Durrell enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, quiz shows and children.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bill Eller of Brookings; grandchildren, Kevin and his wife Barbara Eller of Medford; Lynette and husband Jose Hernandez; Jill and husband Julio Cesar Zebadua of Brookings; Nathan and wife Chandra Eller of Medford, and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years who died May 6, and her infant son, William Guy Durrell Jr.

A memorial service will be today (Oct. 19) at Grace Bible Church at 2 p.m. with Pastor Wil Winter officiating. Inurnment will be at W.J. Ward Memorial cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be donated in Mrs. Durrell's name to the Salvation Army, 409B Hillside Ave., Brookings.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.

John "Scott" Maple

Obit dated: April 9, 2003

John "Scott" Maple, 73, of Harbor died March 31, 2003, at his home of cancer.

He was born March 18, 1930, in Dallas, Texas to Elmer Scott and Eunice Margaret Hemphill Maple.

He was raised and educated in Palestine, Texas. Following high school he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He married Lovona Macivor in Las Vegas, Nev., on June 7, 1953.

Early in his working life he was employed at an oil refinery. He later became a pile driver and pile driver superintendent for many large construction projects in southern California. He took pride in his contribution to the completion of monumental projects such as the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angles Harbor, freeway bridges and various marinas in California.

The family followed Mr. Maple's work projects for several years, then settled in Ventura, Calif., where the children were raised. In 1986, the Maples moved to Brookings where he served on the Harbor Fire Department Board, and became a member of the Smith River Baptist Church. He also ran Scott's Fishing Charter in Brookings-Harbor in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

He treasured his wife and was dedicated to God, his family and country, his family said. He enjoyed fishing, marble collecting and bowling. He was quick to help others in need, quietly performing many acts of kindness and generosity.

Maple took pride in being a direct descendant of Arthur Middleton, who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Survivors include his wife, Lovona, of Harbor; son and daughter-in-law James Scott and Susan Maple of Greeley, Colo., daughter and son-in-law Kathy L. and Michael Alexander of Grants Pass, son Daniel Lee Maple of Harbor, daughter-in-law Kelly Maple of Central Point. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and special friends Susanne, Chuck, Stephanie and Charlie Marusich.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Aileen Gregory, and son John Frank Maple who died in 1993.

Services were held at the Smith River Baptist Church and committal was at W. J. Ward Memorial cemetery on Friday, April 4.

Arrangements were under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Barbara Kaye Hopfenzitz

Obit dated: March 26, 2003

Barbara Kaye "Barb" Hopfenzitz, 58, of Brookings, died March 20, 2003 at her home of natural causes.

Hopfenzitz was born September 22, 1944 in Omaha, Nebraska, a daughter of Arnold Lee Woodring and Kay Louise (Dirgo) Woodring. She was raised and educated in Pattonsburg, Missouri, and graduated from Pattonsburg High School.

In October of 1962, she married Ewald Hopfenzitz, and the couple made their home in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she was employed as a telephone operator. They subsequently moved to Omaha, and later to Missouri, where the family lived for thirty-five years and raised their older children. During the years her children were in elementary school, she was employed as a crossing guard at Coverdell Elementary School in St. Charles, a job she greatly enjoyed.

In the early 1990s she began working at McDonald's in St. Charles and, following a move to Brookings in 1997, worked at McDonald's locally from 1997 until illness forced her retirement in December of 2002. She found personal satisfaction in serving people and seeing familiar customers.

While living in St. Charles, Hopfenzitz took up running and competed in several 10K and 5 mile races.

She collected dolls and music boxes, was an avid reader of mysteries and enjoyed Louise May Alcott stories. She enjoyed music of all kinds, and had an eclectic collection.

She was a very positive person, according to her family. She was outgoing and had a silly sense of humor. She cared deeply for animals, and they responded uniquely to her.

Survivors include her husband, Ewald, of Brookings; five children, Vicki Hopfenzitz, Martin Hopfenzitz, and Sammi (Carrie) Naes, all of St. Louis, Mo; Melanie Metheney and husband, Kyle, of Indianapolis, Ind; and Mark Hopfenzitz of Brookings; a brother, Walter Woodring of Omaha, Neb.; four sisters, Donna Gardner and Anita Jo Booth, both of Pattonsburg, Mo.; Marcia Devore of Kansas City, Mo; and Gloria Drummond of Yuba City, Calif.; and one grandchild, Collin Hopfenzitz of St. Charles, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her father, an infant daughter Cassandra, and a sister, Gayle Robertson.

Memorials are suggested to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 381 Park Ave. S., Suite 507, New York, N.Y. 10016.

A memorial service was held Monday, March 24th at Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.

Evelyn S. Pomeroy

Obit dated: March 26, 2003

Evelyn "Eve" S. Pomeroy, 80, of Brookings, died March 24, 2003 in a local care facility of natural causes.

Pomeroy was born February 5, 1923 in London, England, a daughter of Walter and Evelin (Aldridge) Hollis. She was raised and educated in London, and remained an English citizen her entire life.

She joined the English army and served for 7 years as a draftsman. During WWII she narrowly escaped injury during the London blitz.

In 1946, she and Leland Pomeroy were married in London. Following their marriage, she was a homemaker and stayed in London and in the United States during her husband's assignments to many areas of the world. She loved to travel, however, and after his retirement the couple visited many areas, including India and the Far East. She was an outgoing and friendly person who made friends wherever she went, her family said.

On an extended vacation to the States, the couple found Brookings, and have made their home here for the last 12 years.

Pomeroy bred and showed Kerry Blue Terriers in England. She also enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by her husband, Leland, of Brookings; and an "adopted" son, Michael Wright of England.

Memorials are suggested to the South Coast Humane Society, P.O. Box 7833, Brookings, OR 97415.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.

Lowell Frederick Wing

Obit dated: March 26, 2003

Lowell Frederick Wing, 76, of Brookings, died March 24 2003, at his home of natural causes.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Betty Jeanne Tarr

Obit dated: March 15, 2003

Betty Jeanne Tarr, 77, of Brookings, died March 12, 2003, as a result of lung cancer.

Mrs. Tarr was born Feb. 27, 1926, in Seymour, Mo; the daughter of Robert W. and Agnes Christine (Hunt) Odle. She was raised in Missouri, moved as a teenager to Lindsay, Calif., and graduated from Lindsay High School.

In the following years, Mrs. Tarr raised a family of three children and worked in the medical field. She worked for a number of years at the Porterville State Hospital.

She lived briefly in Madera, Calif., before moving to Oakhurst, Calif., in 1964. In 1977, she moved to Crater Lake.

On Jan. 14, 1978, she married Allan W. Tarr in Reno, Nev. The couple started an Alaska fishing business and spent their summers salmon fishing in Nak Nek. In 1989, they sold the business and began RV traveling full time, spending winters in Arizona.

The Tarrs made their home in Curry County since 1993 and, in 1995, they moved to Harbor.

Mrs. Tarr was a focused and determined person who set goals and worked hard to accomplish them, her family said. She enjoyed gardening, and was an avid reader. She was interested in learning throughout her life, and was a frequent visitor to the community library. She had recently taken up online card playing, and was busy learning to use the computer.

Dogs were an important part of Mrs. Tarr's life. She bred and raised miniature schnauzers, and did small animal grooming for friends and neighbors in earlier years.

She liked arts and crafts, including pretty punch embroidery. She collected clowns, and was an accomplished seamstress and an excellent cook. She also enjoyed clogging.

She is survived by her husband; daughter, Cherie Lynn Lovejoy of Santa Cruz, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Anne and John Crane of Grass Valley, Calif; son and daughter-in-law, John Robert and Carol Lovejoy of Clovis, Calif; stepsons, Rick, Tim and Paul Tarr; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles R. and Crystal Odle of San Jose, Calif.; six grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Walter Odle.

Private family services will be at Lindsay City cemetery. Memorials may be made to Chetco Community Public Library, 405 Alder St., Brookings, OR 97415, or to Curry County Hospice, P.O. Box 746, Gold Beach, OR 97444.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Bill Cody

Obit dated: March 15, 2003

Bill Cody, 69, of Grants Pass, died March 12, 2003, at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born William Van Cody on Aug. 19, 1933, in Los Angeles to Thelma and Gilbert Cody. He was raised in Etna, Calif.

In 1951, he moved to Grants Pass and went to work for L.B. Hall Funeral Home, working there until 1959. He received his funeral director's license in 1954.

In 1959, he began working with the Oregon State Police, Department of Fish and Wildlife, and in 1966, he returned to work for L.B. Hall. In 1975, he remodeled the old police station in Grants Pass to start Cody's Place Tavern, which he operated until 1987.

From 1987 to 1998, he resided in Brookings, where he cared for his mother. During that time, he worked for Scantlin's Mortuary, purchased Fashionette Beauty Salon and built Fashionette Launderette, a coin-op laundry. In 1998, he moved to Rogue River at Morrow Heights.

He was a member of the Grants Pass Elks Lodge for 47 years.

Survivors include his daughter, Vicky Morrison, and grandson, Cody William Morrison, both of Grants Pass.

No services are planned. Remembrances may be made to the Grants Pass Elks Lodge, 207 S.W. K St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

Manuel da Rosa Bettencourt

Obit dated: March 15, 2003

Manuel da Rosa Bettencourt, 89, of Brookings, died suddenly at home on March 12, 2003.

Mr. Bettencourt was born May 7, 1913, in Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal. He was raised on a family farm.

He married Alice Teixeira Luis on Nov. 27, 1933, in Velas, Sao Jorge, Azores. In the late 1960s, the family immigrated to the U.S., and made their home in Tracy, Calif. Mr. Bettencourt worked for Clever Dairy and, in later years, did landscaping. He retired in 1962, but continued to work odd jobs to keep active.

His wife died in 1993 and, in 2000, Mr. Bettencourt moved to Brookings to be near his daughter Alvina and her family.

He was a quiet and content man, his family said, who enjoyed taking long walks, gardening and fishing. He was a member of the Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Maria and Joe Sequeira of Tracy, Calif., and Alvina and Dolor Almeida of Brookings; a brother and sister-in-law, Franeisco and Marie Danielle Bettencourt of Velas, Sao Jorge; grandchildren Lydia Ferreira of Tracy, Calif., Manuel Almeida of Brookings and Linda Coffey and her husband Craig of Crescent City; a great-grandchild, Alyssa Ferreira of Tracy, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Jose Luis Bettencourt; daughter, Lydia Bettencourt; grandson, Manuel Sequire.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 820 Old County Road, Brookings.

A Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 20, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Tracy, Calif. Interment will follow in Tracy cemetery. Local arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
