Jonathan Clifford Brewer, 19, of Brookings, died May 31, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the Brookings First Baptist Community Church, 607 Pacific Ave.
Jonathan is survived by his father and step-mother, Clifford and Marla Brewer of Klamath Falls; mother, Tina Brewer of Eureka; brothers, David Little of Eureka, a brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Elena McKee of Brookings and their children Shasta and Christian McKee; grandparents, Ted and Alice Brewer of Klamath Falls; Carl and Esther Akins of Fortuna, Calif., step-grandmother Rose Mallory of McKinleyville, Calif.; and step-great grandmother, Betty Robinson of McKinleyville.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Community Church in Brookings.
Guyla Giddings

Guyla Grace Giddings, 72, of Crescent City, died April 29, 2003, in Medford.
She was born Sept. 16, 1930 in Colton, Calif.
She was a 67-year resident of Del Norte County.
Mrs. Giddings enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading, and taking walks on the beach.
She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church where she played the piano to the children during classes.
Survivors include children Ellie and husband Phillip Rhodes of Medford; Lorena and husband Neil Harris of Paradise, Calif.; Evelyn B. Giddings and husband David Lemm of Eureka, Calif.; Blaine Giddings of Crescent City; Norman and wife Lynn Giddings of Crescent City; Albert Giddings, Jr. of Hiouchi; brothers Tim Griffin of San Bernardino, Calif.; Norman Griffin of New York; grandchildren Kelli Thacker; Clara Coltra; Jodi Brown; Stephanie Buma; Austin, Breeze and Stormy Giddings; Kelsey, Kendall and Cole Giddings; Eli and Megan Harris. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Giddings, Sr. in 1988.
Visitation will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday, May 2; 9 a.m.-until service time, Saturday, May 3.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Wier's Mortuary Chapel, 408 G St., Crescent City. Interment will take place at the Del Norte County Veteran's cemetery in Crescent City.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel.
Hazel Garliepp
Obit dated: May 3, 2003
Hazel Alberta Garliepp, 79, died April 28, 2003, at home in Brookings of natural causes.
She was born August 5, 1923, in Oakland, Calif., to Nathan Bickford Heath and Mildred Alberta Omstead Heath. She was raised in Oakland and knew her husband, Loree, when they were children growing up in the same neighborhood.
She graduated from Castlemont High School in Oakland and went directly to business school. Upon graduation she worked for the U.S. Navy supply depot in Oakland.
The Garliepps were married
October 5, 1946, in Oakland. They moved to Concord and lived there from 1946 until 1998.
Mrs. Garliepp spent five years as a bookkeeper, providing accounting services for the Montgomery Ward offices in Oakland. She then stayed home to raise her family, and returned to work for 10 more years in Walnut Creek at Montgomery Ward, retiring in the mid- 1970s.
She was an active member of the Fair Oaks Baptist Church in Concord. She was a member of the Sweet Adalines. She enjoyed bowling, playing the piano, crocheting, cooking, making ceramics, and had a love for all animals, especially her cats and dogs.
She was particularly fond of sunsets, and when she and her husband moved to Brookings, they lived in a home with a good view of them. She had a collection of hundreds of Santa Clauses and at Christmas had no need for any other decorations on the tree. She also collected music boxes and from this came her CB handle, "Music Box." Another nickname that was coined by her grandchildren when they would gather around her at the holidays was "Grandma Cookie." Her family said that she was loving, generous, the matriarch of their extended family, and a natural-born leader.
Mrs. Garliepp and her husband traveled the West Coast extensively, and Alaska and Hawaii.
She liked to plan the family trips in detail and then keep a journal as the travels unfolded. Since 1998, the Garliepps and one son have lived in Brookings.
She is survived by her husband; sons Dale Garliepp, Sr., and wife Linda of Selma, Oregon and Daryl Garliepp of Brookings; daughter Donna Heaivilin and husband Carroll, of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a sister, Diane Heath, of Spokane, Wash., three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and Tuffy, her cat.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister June Hohn, and an infant brother.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Muriel Saalfield

Muriel Agnes Saalfield, 88, died April 30, 2003, at her home in Brookings of natural causes.
She was born on February 15, 1915, at Great Valley, N.Y., to Avery and Anna Mohr Howe.
She married
John E. Chase on October 25, 1933, in Great Valley, N.Y. They lived there until his death in 1979. She married
Richard Eighme in 1980, and after his death she married
Everett Saalfield of Little Valley, N.Y. in 1984.
She lived a very full and happy life, her family said. She enjoyed cooking, ceramics, crocheting, knitting, reading and dancing. She enjoyed being with people and will be long remembered for her sweet smile, twinkling blue eyes, and her great love of life.
She is survived by daughters, Patricia E. Ball of Brookings, and Marilyn S. Mack of Rapid City, S.D.; brother, Sidney Howe of Hamburg, N.Y.; sister, Esther Sylvester of Bradford, Pa.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Millard Howe and Glen Howe; and son, James Chase.
A memorial service will be held at a later time.
Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
Bert Darling

Bert Darling, 67, of Harbor, a retired produce manager, died in his home of natural causes during the last week. He had lived in Brookings since March, after living in California most of his life. No local services are planned. Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.
Ersel M. Williams
Obit dated: July 12, 2003
Ersel M. "Bill" Williams, 88, of Brookings, died July 5, 2003, in a local care facility.
He was born April 6, 1915, in Lorenzo, Idaho, the son of LaVern Edward and Rachel Elvina (Carpenter) Williams. He was raised on a ranch in Lorenzo, and graduated from Rigby High School. As a child, he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Following high school, he worked briefly for the Montana Cattlemen's Association before joining the U.S. Navy in 1936 as a seaman's recruit. During his career in the Navy, he traveled the world and had many interesting experiences. He was involved in the search for Amelia Earhart, and was stationed on the first ship to enter Pearl Harbor following the Japanese attack. In later years he was instrumental in the dismantling of the Farragut, a World War II Naval boot camp in Glens Ferry, Idaho.
In 1945, Mr. Williams met his future wife, Edna Elvira Johnson. They were married
April 6, 1947, in Seattle. The couple lived in many areas during his military career.
Mr. Williams retired as a Lieutenant on April 1, 1966, and shortly after took employment with the City of San Diego. He became a horticulture specialist and was responsible for the nursery that supplied landscaping plants for Balboa Park and other city holdings.
Following his second retirement in 1981, the couple traveled extensively before moving to Harbor in 1986. Mrs. Williams died October 1, 1995.
Williams was a quiet man who found enjoyment in gardening, his family said. He was also an avid fisherman, and owned his own boat for a number of years.
He is survived by a sister, Georgia Chase of Ririe, Idaho; a grandson, William Johnson of Brookings; a granddaughter and her husband, Valerie and Brad Ballard of Long Beach, Calif; and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews in Idaho. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Eddins, and two brothers, Frank and L.E. Williams.

A private family memorial service is at Redwood Memorial Chapel on Friday, July 11th.
James Brooks Warner

James Brooks Warner, 79, of Brookings, died June 27, 2003, in Coos Bay of natural causes. No memorial services are scheduled, at his request. Arrangements were under the direction of the Coos Bay Chapel.
Thomas James Dolan
Obit dated: July 12, 2003
Thomas James Dolan, 67, died July 9, 2003, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City of leukemia.
He was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Camp Crook, S.D. to James Dolan and Viole Deisch Dolan.
The family moved to Bremerton, Wash., in 1942 and then to Walla Walla, Wash. where he graduated from high school in 1953.
He joined the Amy in 1959, serving in Germany when the Berlin wall was built.
After his discharge he attended Southern Oregon College now SOU in Ashland, graduating in 1966 earning a degree in Art and Social Science. His particular interest was painting and after graduation he continued his work in abstract expressionism.
Mr Dolan moved to Smith River in 1966. He worked for Del Norte County's Aid to Families with Dependent Children program. Many of his clients became his friends. In the 1970s he started painting houses and continued this profession the rest of his life.
He married
Lynn Fillippa in Crescent City. They later divorced.
Survivors include son Terry Fillippa; daughter-in-law Dena; grandchildren Jarrod, Kristen, Jordan; brothers Dennis and Kenneth.
He enjoyed San Francisco Giants baseball games, reading, downhill skiing, talking politics, playing the steel guitar and taking his grandchildren fishing, his family said.

Wanda Wilsey Brian

Wanda Wilsey Brian, 94, of Brookings, died June 18, 2003 at Parkview Special Care in Brookings.
She was born Dec. 14, 1908 in New Harmony, Ind. to Ernest "Pete" and Bessie Conrad Wilsey.
She graduated second in her class from Woodlake High School in the San Joaquin Valley in California where she earned a block letter in basketball. She attended University of California, Los Angeles.
She and her first husband, John Simpson, moved to Powderhorn, Colo. where she became a crack shot and horseback rider, ran a trapline and survived the Great Depression raising cattle. They moved to Walker, Calif. near the Klamath River.
At the death of her husband she returned with her children, Claude, Elinor, James and Wanda, Jr. to the San Joaquin Valley where she met and married
Ray Evans. They farmed in Missouri, ran a restaurant outside Dallas where her fifth child Deborah was born. They settled in San Jose, Calif. in the 1950s. During World War II she worked as a cab driver and in the Richmond, Calif. shipyards.
In the 1950s she became a charter member and served as president of the Pharmaceutical Clerks of Santa Clara County, (SEIU). She was one of the founders of the Senior Citizens movement in Santa Clara County in the 1960s and 1970s, and helped develop the United Food Organization to feed the elderly and homeless in San Jose and later served as president of the County Food and Nutrition Services. In the 1980s she received the Senior Citizen Queen Award for hours of service and the 1990 Dorothy Tash Award from the Santa Clara County for Volunteer Work.
She married
Robert E. Brian June 1, 1986 in San Jose.
She and her husband moved to Brookings in 1992
She was an active member of the Brookings-Harbor Christian Church in Brookings.
She remained true to her sense of justice and belief in equal rights for women. Still walking and active up to the last months of her 94 years, she stood up for what she believed was right and was courageous to the end of her life.
Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Brian, of Brookings; sons Claude Simpson of Crescent Junction; Rev. James Dean Simpson of Hermiston; daughters, Wanda M. Simpson-Baczek of Oakland, Calif.; Deborah Keane of Chicago; cousin, Sandra Rasmussen of Visalia, Calif. Also surviving are eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister, two husbands, and daughter, Elinor Ann Mills.
A memorial service will be held in conjunction with the Brian Family Reunion at 6 p.m., July 13, at the Brookings-Harbor Christian Church. Inurnment in Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose.
