James Harry Lee

Obit dated: November 8, 2003

James "Jim" Harry Lee, 76, of Harbor, died Nov. 2, 2003, at his home of natural causes.

He was born March 6, 1927, in Denver, Colo. to James Stevenson and Gladys Cenus Panker Lee. As a child he moved to Hastings, Neb. where he was raised.

During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed on a ship in the Asiatic Theater. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Hastings where he worked for the Chicago Burlington Railroad.

He married Lorna Brees on May 16, 1947, in Mankato, Kan. The couple lived in Hastings for 30 years before moving to Brookings in 1964.

In Brookings, Lee briefly owned Brookings Office Supply. He then bought his first motel in Klamath Falls. Lee enjoyed the motel business and owned a series of motels in Texas, Mississippi and Utah, before moving back to Brookings last year.

The couple spent several summers in Skagway, Alaska with friends. Lee enjoyed fishing the oceans and rivers. He owned a 27 foot boat, Tasha, and later enjoyed jet boating. He also found pleasure in gardening, his family said.

He is survived by his wife, of Brookings; daughter Linda Moulton of Kalispell, Mont.; son Gregory Lee of San Diego, Calif.; his brother in Long Beach, Calif. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation was under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.

William Mark Archuleta

Obit dated: November 8, 2003

William "Bill" Mark Archuleta, 57, of Brookings, died Oct. 28, 2003, in a motor vehicle accident near Brookings.

He was born Feb. 27, 1946, in Chama, N.M. to Florencio and Frances Martinez Archuleta. He was raised and educated in Layton, Utah.

Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and served two tours in Vietnam as well as two years in the Air Force Reserves.

Archuleta earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah and a Master's of Business Administration from New York State University.

In December, 1972, he married Kathleen Schoonmaker in Ogden, Utah. The couple were later divorced.

He was employed by the Veterans Administration for his entire career, and had worked for V.A. facilities in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Virginia and Oregon before retiring in 2000 as director of personnel of the Chicago, Illinois VA Medical Center.

Upon retiring, he volunteered with the Red Cross, aiding in several hurricane and disaster sites including in New York City after 9-11.

He had lived in Brookings for the last two years.

Archuleta liked traveling, boating, golfing, fishing, and was an avid Washington Redskins fan, his family said. He was instrumental in preparing the family's genealogy.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Blake and Hazel Archuleta of Andrews Air Force Base, Md., and their children, Kai and Freya Archuleta; stepdaughter Stephanie Ballard of Kansas; parents, of Layton; brothers and sisters and their spouses, Maria Saleh of Oakland, Calif.; James Archuleta of Salt Lake City, Utah; Linda and Darrel Einspahr of Ogden, Utah; Joyce and Phillip Scherrer of Roy, Utah; Sabino and Angela Archuleta of Missoula, Mont.; Clare and Patrick Lynch of Layton; Cindy and Jim Billot of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations are suggested to the American Red Cross, 430 17th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20006.

Graveside services will be held in Layton at 11 a.m. today (Saturday, Nov. 8), under the direction of Lindquist's Memorial Gardens. Local arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Ardythe G. Carpenter

Obit dated: February 5, 2005

Ardythe G. Carpenter, 89, of Brookings, died Feb. 2, 2005, of natural causes at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.

She was born May 21, 1915, to Arthur and Ada Roberts Gocke, in Denver, Colo.

She grew up in Denver.

After high school she worked briefly for United Airlines in Cheyenne, Wyo.

During World War II, Mrs. Carpenter moved to California. In 1952, she moved to Hawaii and worked in the accounting department for Pan American World Airways until her retirement in 1978. In 1988 she moved to Brookings to be near the ocean she loved.

Mrs. Carpenter was an independent and adventurous spirit, her family said. She loved to visit new places and experience different cultures. She traveled extensively throughout the country and the world, including "heli-hiking" in Canada, hot air ballooning in the Serengeti of Africa, and touring through Ecuador during an active revolution in that country.

Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Pan Am Association and the Pan Am Historical Foundation.

She is survived by daughter Linda Carpenter of Brookings; cousins Marilyn Rich and Carolyn Richlin of Littleton, Colo.; and numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews.

No services are planned at this time.

Memorial donations in her name may be made to the American Heart and Lung Association, 1425 N.E. Irving, Suite 100, Portland, OR 97232.

Daniel Snow Bradford

Obit dated: February 5, 2005

Daniel Snow Bradford, 28, died on Feb. 3, 2005, in Crescent City.

Mr. Bradford was born on Sept. 7, 1976, in Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho.

He was valedictorian of Green Valley High School in Henderson, Nev., and was an Eagle Scout.

He was a recent graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

He moved to Del Norte County in January from Hill Air Force Base in Utah where he was assigned to the 34th Fighter Squadron.

Mr. Bradford was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served a two year Latter-Day Saints mission to Venezuela.

He is survived by parents Craig and Sharon Bradford of Crescent City; brother Captain Matt Bradford of Lancaster, Calif., sister Anna-Marie lacono, of Mesa, Ariz.

Private services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.

Donald Rae Shafer

Obit dated: February 5, 2005

Donald Rae Shafer, 73, of Brookings, died Jan. 29, 2005, at the home of his nephew, Chris Bodeker and Chris' wife Anita, in Crescent City, after a long bout with cancer.

He was born April 26, 1931, in Rio Dell, Calif., and was raised in Klamath, Calif.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954.

He made his home in Brookings and was a longtime member of Brookings Elks Lodge 1934 which he loved, his family said.

Myrtle Francis Liddell

Obit dated: February 5, 2005

Myrtle Francis Liddell, 92, of Gold Beach, died Jan. 30, 2005, of natural causes at a local residential care facility.

She was born July 10, 1912, in Raymond, Calif., to Thomas Morton Nicholas and Lillian Amanda Andersen Nicholas.

In the 1950s, Mrs. Liddell was postmistress of the towns of Raymond and Knowles in Madera County, Calif.

Five years ago she and her sister moved to Crescent City where they lived together for two years. Mrs. Liddell then moved to Gold Beach where she has lived for the past three years.

Survivors include son Kenneth Wood of Brookings; grandson Richard Wood of Dallas; granddaughters Carol Sargent of Oxnard, Calif., Donna Patterson of Atascadero, Calif.; sister Emma Brown of Crescent City; nieces Darlene McBride of Escondido, Joyce Wendorff of Clovis, Calif. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Liddell was preceded in death by her two husbands.

Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.

Robert Franklin Mercer

Robert Franklin Mercer, 81, of Brookings, died Jan. 31, 2005, of natural causes at home.

He was born Feb. 21, 1923, in Astoria, Ill., to Raymond Ellis Mercer and Violia Rose Mercer.

Mr. Mercer served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Craven.

While in the military, he married Thelma Irene Miller on Dec. 6, 1942. Together they ran their own janitorial business in Crescent City for 18 years.

He married Ella Jean "Jeannie" Gee in Pendleton in 1968. Together they ran their own business in Portland, dealing in property management and real estate.

Last December, Mr. Mercer moved to Brookings to be closer to his family.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Zenneta and John Yost of Brookings; daughter and son-in-law Dianna and Randy Morton of Brookings; son and daughter-in-law Rudy and Donna Mercer of Brush Prairie, Wash.; son Patrick Mercer of Battleground, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law Tom and Chris Gee of Portland; son Bobby Gee of Portland; son Donny Gee of Battleground; daughter Beverly Raffrele of Orchards, Wash.; brother Ray Lee Mercer of Brookings; sister Rosy Brown of Portland; and first wife Thelma Sarrett of Brookings.

Mr. Mercer was preceded in death by his second wife Jeannie, and his sister Betty King.

Private family services will be held at a later date with interment at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Memorial donations can be made to Curry County Hospice, P.O. Box 746, Gold Beach, OR 97444.

Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.

Armand Mario Pihl

Obit dated: January 29, 2005

Armand Mario Pihl, 91, of Chico, Calif. died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Chico, following a lengthy illness.

Armand was born Jan. 12, 1914, in Malden, Mass., to Armand Constantine and Marion Vistue Steeves Pihl.

In his early years, Mr. Pihl and his family moved to Southern California, living in Pasadena, Santa Monica and Monrovia. One of the highlights of his life, his family said, was playing in his high school marching band in the Rose Parade.

Following high school, he worked in a variety of construction jobs, including the building of a dam in Ridgecrest, Calif.

During World War II, he was employed by a civilian construction company building a road to Russia and working on projects in Africa and Persia.

Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Pihl worked as a salesman for Frank Fey and Co. in Berkeley, Calif. and Claar Chevrolet Co. in Richmond, Calif.

In the early 1960s he attended Law's School of Marine Engineering in Oakland, Calif., and became licensed as an engineer on steam vessels.

From 1966 to 1979, he traveled the world as a civilian employee of the Military Sealift Command, Pacific, working on various naval ships, including the USS Upsure, Geiger, Arnold, Wheeling and Aeolus. These ships visited many foreign ports of call: Guam, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, United Kingdom as well as many U. S. ports.

In 1979 Armand retired as a 2nd Assistant Engineer. Following his retirement, he and his companion of many years traveled the U.S., Canada and Mexico in their RV.

They settled for a time in Spokane, Wash., and later lived in Brookings for approximately five years.

In 1998, the couple moved to Chico, Calif., to be near family.

Survivors include sons, Armand Leonard Pihl of Pahrump, Nev., and Brian Pihl of El Cerrito, Calif.; daughters, Alana Unger of Tiburon, Calif., and Kathlyn Pihl of Corte Madera, Calif.; companion Anna Pasinetti of Durham and her daughters Judy Brillhart of Durham, Calif., and Joanne Angel of Chico. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Elinore Johnson and Marian Fey.

A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 29, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation,1200 Springfield Drive, Room 2, Chico.

A private memorial and scattering of his ashes off the coast of Marin County will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a favorite charity.
