Virgil Arnold Taresh

Obit dated: March 4, 2006

Virgil Arnold Taresh, 82, of Vancouver, Wash.,died Feb. 5, 2006, at his home in Vancouver of natural causes.

Mr. Taresh was born Feb. 9, 1923, in Taylorsville, Calif. to Arnold and Marrion Taresh.

He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Greenville, Calif., where he lettered in baseball, basketball and track.

Mr. Taresh married Vaunda L. Olds, Jan. 5, 1943, in Reno, Nev. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II from March 1943 to November 1945.

The couple moved to Rio Dell, Calif., in 1951. An accomplished carpenter, Mr. Taresh built the family home. He was employed in the timber industry. While in Rio Dell, Mr. and Mrs. Taresh were members of a square-dancing club. He greatly enjoyed working with wood.

Mr. and Mrs. Taresh moved to Brookings in 1971 where Mr. Taresh was employed by the South Coast Plywood mill until he retired in 1989.

Mr. Taresh greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing various card games. He also enjoyed building flower boxes, cabinets and gifts for his children and grandchildren and enjoyed working in their gardens.

In 2002 the couple moved to Vancouver for health reasons.

Survivors include his wife Vaunda of Vancouver; daughter Janet Kramer of Vancouver; son Lyle and daughter- in-law Brenda Taresh of Arizona; son Randy and daughter-in-law Stacy Taresh of Brookings; sister Lillian Lambert of Oroville, Calif.; brothers Harold Taresh of Arizona, Carrol Taresh of Chico, Calif.; grandchildren Brad Blunk, Derek Blunk, Dwayne Taresh, Carol Taresh, Chelsie Taresh, Nick Taresh; great-granddaughters Holly and Kelly Taresh.

He was preceded in death by his sister Lavern Garroute.

A Celebration of Life was held Feb. 9, in Vancouver.

Marian Louise Wing

Obit dated: March 1, 2006

Marian Louise Wing, 89, former 52-year resident of Brookings, died Feb. 27, 2006, in Lakeside. Arrangements are under the direction of Dunes Memorial Chapel in Reedsport.

Betty Carolyn Caldwell

Obit dated: February 25, 2006

Betty Carolyn Caldwell, 80, of Medford, died Feb. 22, 2006, at Arbor Place Assisted Living Center in Medford of natural causes.

She was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Ainsworth, Iowa, to Roger and Marie Colthurst.

She was raised on land homesteaded by her great-great-grandfather.

She graduated from high school in Ainsworth and attended Iowa Wesleyn College where she studied secretarial skills.

She married Phil Caldwell Nov. 22, 1945, in Ainsworth.

The couple lived in Iowa until 1964 when they moved to California. She worked as a secretary, and as a clerk in the Federal Agricultural offices in Iowa and California. She and her husband owned upholstery businesses in both states as well.

Mrs. Caldwell enjoyed sewing and especially teaching sewing to the young girls in the 4-H club in Iowa. During this time she and her husband were leaders for the church youth group there.

While living in Oroville, Calif. Mrs. Caldwell became involved with the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

After retiring, the couple moved to Brookings in 1990. Mrs. Caldwell was involved with the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary chapter in Brookings. The chapter earned many state and national awards for the items they contributed to the White City Domiciliary. She was happy to be sewing and teaching others to sew the quilts she helped make are legendary, her daughter said.

In 2004, Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell moved to Arbor Place Assisted Living Center. She continued to sew for the veterans and for some of the residents at the center.

Mrs. Caldwell played the piano throughout her life, accompanying singers while in high school and at her church in Ainsworth. She greatly enjoyed playing her electronic piano in Brookings and at the center until her death.

Survivors include her husband Phil of Medford; daughters Carolyn Fulton and her husband Jim Fulton of Brookings, Kathleen Chambers and her husband Mike Chambers of Cottage Grove; brother and sister-in-law George and Margaret Colthurst of Ainsworth. Also surviving are grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 1, at Eagle Point National cemetery, 2763 Riley Rd., in Eagle Point.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be made to the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, P. O. Box 4729, Brookings, OR 97415.

Dr. A. Ben King

Obit dated: February 25, 2006

Ben King, 85, of Brookings, died at his home, Feb. 19, 2006, after a short illness.

He was born Aug. 15, 1920, in Lomond, Alberta, Canada.

He grew up in Claresholm a small town south of Calgary, Alberta.

He earned a medical degree at University of Alberta, graduating in 1943. He interned in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he met nurse Grace Maxine Prescott who became his wife June 12, 1945.

The couple moved to Vermilion, Alberta, where Dr. King had a successful general medical practice. He served as mayor of Vermilion for two years. He was a member of the Rotary Club, served as president of Kinsmen Club, an alderman and member of the Senate at the University of Alberta.

The couple's children were all born in Vermilion. In 1967 the King family moved to Bend and later Portland and Lake Oswego. During his working years in Oregon, Dr. King was a mental health officer and public health official with an emphasis on psychiatric assessment.

After retiring, Dr. and Mrs. King settled in Brookings in 1991. They were members of the Presbyterian church. They became involved with the Chetco Community Public Library and Time-Out Program. Dr. King was on the Board of the Curry County Home Health and Hospice in the mid-1990s.

Other than his wife and children, Dr. King's joys in life included fishing, cooking and eating singing and promoting mental health awareness to improve the quality of life of those affected by mental illness. His ability to remember hundreds of jokes always came in handy at parties and gatherings, his family said.

Survivors include his wife Maxine of Brookings; daughter Pamela and her husband Don, daughter Mary Jane and her husband Andrew; sons Murray and Michael. Also surviving are nine grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), www.nami.org, or Curry County Home Health and Hospice, P. O. Box 746 Gold Beach, Oregon 97444.

Cremation is in care of Redwood Memorial Chapel, Brookings.

Fred A. Mesman

Obit dated: February 25, 2006

Fred A. Mesman, 71, of Brookings, died Feb, 21, 2006, at his home of cancer.

He was born Feb. 21, 1935, in El Monte, Calif., to Neal C. and Margret Marie Larson Mesman.

Mr. Mesman spent his youth in El Monte, and then moved to Grants Pass in 1941. After graduating in 1952 from Grants Pass High School, he attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland before working for Boeing Aircraft in Renton, Wash.

Mr. Mesman married Janet Louise Flickinger Oct. 2, 1953, in Grants Pass. He had a milk route and later transported and sold breads, beers, and meats. During that time he became a member of the Teamsters Union in Medford.

After 47 years as a route sales representative in the food service industry, Mr. Mesman retired and he and his wife settled in Brookings.

Mr. Mesman loved the outdoors, especially camping, hunting, and fishing. He was very family-oriented and made spending time with his children his priority. He enjoyed his daily walks, crabbing at the docks, and maintaining his lawn and garden. His daughter remembers him teaching her everything she knows. He developed a good rapport with his whole family, especially his grandchildren, his wife said.

Survivors include wife Janet Mesman of Brookings; son Bruce and wife Tamerie Mesman, son Gregory and wife Barbara Mesman, all of Grants Pass; daughter Lisa Jarrett of Bend, son Fritz and wife Arianne Mesman, also of Grants Pass; grandchildren Joel and wife Khara Mesman, and Shannon Mesman, all of Grants Pass; Celeste and husband Cesar Sandoval of Rocklin, Calif.; Meggan and husband Jody Reeve, Katherine Jarrett and Lucas Jarrett, all of Bend, Calvin, Alexa, and Rylie Mesman of Grants Pass; great-grandchildren Presley, Brennan, Sophie, Macey, Ethan, and Savannah; sister Helen Dewey of Fort Collins, Colo.; brothers Bernard and wife Barbara Mesman of Salem, Marlin and wife Sandra Mesman of Ferndale, Calif.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. 6th, Medford, OR' 97501.

A Celebration of Life will be held March 4, from noon to 3 p.m. at R-Haus in Grants Pass.

Cremation is in care of Redwood Memorial Chapel, Brookings.

Mary Katherine Cooper
Michael Stephen Cooper

Obit dated: February 25, 2006

Mary Katherine Cooper, 45, and Michael Stephen Cooper, 57, both of Brookings, died Feb. 13, 2006, at their home.

Mrs. Cooper was born Aug. 22, 1960, in Rock Island, Ill., to Wilbur Alfred and Betty Nancy Lee Hall Spicer.

Her father was active in the U.S. Navy and she lived with her family in many locations in the continental United States.

As an adult she worked as a waitress and at various jobs. She was employed in the advertising department of the Curry Coastal Pilot in the late 1990s, and had most recently been disabled.

Mr. Cooper was born Jan. 9, 1949, in Alhambra, Calif., to Thomas Alan and Charmaine Irene Barrera Cooper.

He was raised in California and served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. Mr. Cooper was medically discharged and later worked at a paper mill and as a painter and construction laborer. Following a serious head injury 18 years ago, he had been permanently disabled.

The Coopers were married Oct. 31, 1978, in Chapel Hill, N.C., and lived in several areas of the country, including Georgia, North Carolina, California, Utah, Florida and Michigan during their marriage. They had resided in Brookings for the past 13 years.

They both enjoyed reading and music.

Survivors include children Charmaine Scott and husband Jeremy, Michael, Matthew and Sarah Cooper all of Brookings; grandchildren Amaya Eckersley and Alexis Scott of Brookings. Also surviving are many extended family members.

They were preceded in death by their stillborn granddaughter, Maggie Rhiannon Cooper.

Mrs. Cooper is also survived by her mother Betty Spicer of Bangor, Mich., and three brothers.

She was preceded in death by her father Wilbur Spicer.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his mother, a brother and two sisters.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, at Eagle Point National cemetery in Eagle Point.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 2, at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St. in Brookings.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Mildred Lucille "Millie" Curry

Obit dated: February 25, 2006

Mildred Lucille "Millie" Curry, 79, of Brookings, died Feb. 21, 2006, at her residence of natural causes.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Curry, of Brookings.

There will be no public service.

Cremation is in care of Redwood Memorial Chapel, Brookings.

Wallace Addison Schuffler

Obit dated: February 25, 2006

Wallace Addison Schuffler, 94, of Brookings, died Feb. 13, 2006, at the Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, following a brief illness

He was born March 9, 1911, in Happy Camp, Calif., to Maud Evans and Charles J. Schuffler.

He attended schools in Yreka, Calif., and Sacramento, Calif. After graduation from Sacramento High School, he returned to Happy Camp where his grandfather repaired watches. Under his grandfather's guidance, Mr. Schuffler began fixing broken alarm clocks as a hobby, which became lifelong career.

When he joined the U.S. Air Force in January 1943, his talents were utilized when he was assigned to work on an experimental project with highly sophisticated and sensitive instruments in the Aero Medical Lab at Wright Field, Ohio.

He was discharged as a sergeant in l946.

He worked for Kay Jewelers in Sacramento as a watchmaker for 10 years. While there, his interest in the jewelry industry, gems and diamonds widened and he learned all aspects of the business.

He married Gladys Lumsden Sept. 9, 1951, in Reno, Nev., at once becoming a husband, a stepfather and a step-grandfather.

Mr. and Mrs. Schuffler opened Schuffler's Jewel Box in Vacaville, Calif., in 1954. Through the years they worked side by side in the store until Mrs. Schuffler died in 1977. He continued to operate the shop another 12 years before retiring.

He spent several years traveling in his motorhome around the United States, Canada and Mexico. He moved to Brookings in 1993 to be closer to his stepdaughter Leta and her husband Al Kelsey.

His favorite lunch times were spent at the Chetco Senior Center and at McDonalds.

Survivors include his stepdaughter Leta and Al Kelsey of Brookings; daughter-in-law Myrna Lumsden of Gabbs, Nev.; niece Jackie Harrington of Lakewood, Colo.; grandchildren Jim, Don and Rick Brown, Jim Kelsey, Anne Keeling and Joan Miller, all of California, Mark Lumsden of Oregon, Kevin, Bradford and Christopher Lumsden, all of Nevada. Also surviving are 22 great grandchildren,17 great-great-grandchildren, two grand-nieces, two grand-nephews and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents Maud and Charles; stepmother Mae, sisters Freda Eggleston and Elsie Simms; stepson Leland Lumsden; great-grandson Jeff Boone.

A private memorial service will be at a later date.

Cremation was under the direction of Hillcrest Mortuary in Medford.
