Lillie Jean Essl

Obit dated: June 28, 2006

Lillie Jean Essl, 63, of Gold Beach, died June 23, 2006, at Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach of natural causes.

She was born Sept. 4, 1942, in Steubenville, Ohio, to Charles Rogers and Wilma Wellcome.

Ms. Essl raised her family while working as a bartender in the San Fernando Valley. After moving to Gold Beach in 1985, she worked in the motel business.

She loved to play bingo. She was a member of the Moose Lodge and attended the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) hall in Gold Beach every Wednesday and Friday. She was also known for her quilt-making and enjoyment of jigsaw puzzles. Most of all she was that person you always knew would be home, someone you could count on to be there, her family said.

Survivors include her sons Joey D. Rogers of Bedford, Texas, Paul Essl of Irving, Texas, Larry Holland of San Fernando, Calif.; daughter Christina and husband Ruben Mercado; life companion Orion Darrah and his brother Eugene Darrah all of Gold Beach; Also surviving are seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Jimmy Hunter; granddaughter Kayla Essl; step-grandson Rudy Mercado; Darrah's sister Helen Darrah and her sons Michael, David, and Kevin Darrah.

A private memorial service and a scattering of her ashes will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in her name to the Curry County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 746, Gold Beach, OR 97444, or the American Diabetes Association, Attention: National Call Center, 1701 North Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311.

Arrangements are in care of Redwood Memorial Chapel, Brookings.

Mary Alice Meme' Bonseigneur

Mary Alice "Meme" Bonseigneur, 54, of Brookings, died Oct. 17, 2006, unexpectedly of natural causes.

She was born Nov. 16, 1951, in Sangley Point, Cavite, Philippines.

She grew up and graduated from high school in Los Angeles.

She was married to Eugene Bonseigneur and was a wife and homemaker for 17 years before he passed away. She then moved to La Pine, to be near her sisters Patricia and Cindy. The family relocated to Brookings two years ago.

Mrs. Bonseigneur enjoyed drawing, and watching movies with her nephew Paddy and listening to the ocean. She was outgoing, friendly, thoughtful, had a big heart, and enjoyed buying gifts for others. Her family said that caring for her two nephews was the most important thing in Mary's life.

According to her family, she was fond of saying "Ciao" in parting, and would have done so this one last time.

She is survived by her daughter Athena Wiltsee of Mission Hills, Calif.; several grandchildren; sister Patricia Russell and her partner Kathy Paul, both of Brookings; nephews Sean and Paddy Russell; nieces Casey and Kelly Foster.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; sister Cindy Tapp; brother John Tapp.

A private celebration of life will be at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Robert Keith' Armstrong

Robert "Keith" Armstrong, 89, of Brookings, died Oct. 12, 2006, at a local care facility of natural causes.

He was born July 31, 1917, on Waldron Island, Wash., to Robert Albert and Mabel Ann Alexander Armstrong.

Mr. Armstrong was raised in Glacier, Wash.

He graduated from Bellingham High School in Bellingham, Wash., in January 1935. He completed his studies early and went to work at the Mount Baker Ski Lodge. While working there, he met Clark Gable, Loretta Young and other actors during the filming of "Call of the Wild." He later worked at a bottling company in Bellingham.

In the late 1930s he married Wanda Downs. Their daughter Andra was born of the union. They later divorced.

Mr. Armstrong worked at various jobs before joining the Merchant Marine, where he was in the service of the U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Maritime Service, serving aboard the steam tug Tyee, cargo ships the H.H Scandrett, and the Geo. H. Himes before being honorably discharged in 1945.

He then moved to Walla Walla, Wash., where he married Lois Hewlett.

The couple moved to Alaska in the late 1940s, settling first in Anchorage, Alaska, then homesteading on the Little Sisitna River. He was a licensed hunting guide at that time, and helped many families acquire their necessary supplies of meat for the winter.

In 1952 he became a civilian employee of the U.S. Army as a licensed engineer, at Fort Richardson in Anchorage. He supervised the machine and furniture shop until his retirement in 1972.

Following retirement, the couple moved to Brookings and built a home. The Armstrongs enjoyed traveling in their motor home and also took a trip to Europe.

Mr Armstrong enjoyed boating, gardening and walking his dog. They also enjoyed being snowbirds at Boulder City, Nev., for several seasons.

Survivors include his daughter Andra and son-in-law Wayne Schaub of Anacortes,Wash.; grandchild John Later and his wife Terri of Lynnwood, Wash.; sisters-in-law Grace Rompel, Sarah Schonbachler, and Martha Hathaway.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lois Armstrong; brothers Wallace and Malcolm; sisters Ramona and Hazel.

A memorial service was held in Brookings. Mr. Armstrong's ashes will be scattered at sea at two of his favorite places.

Memorial donations may be made to Curry County Hospice P.O. 746, Gold Beach, OR 97444.

Cremation under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.

William Moody

Obit dated: October 21, 2006

William Norval Moody, 90, of Brookings, died Sept. 28, 2006, in a care facility in Crescent City, Calif., of pneumonia.

He was born March 6, 1916, in Seaside.

During World War II, Mr. Moody served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant.

While in the service, he met and married his wife Bethia Mary.

Following his honorable discharge, the couple moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., where Mr. Moody worked for 20 years as the head engineer of boiler room maintenance at University of California.

Mr. Moody also served in the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Patrol as a volunteer before retiring and moving to Brookings in 1990.

He enjoyed gardening and building with wood, and was a member of the Elks Lodge. Mr. Moody's friends said that he was a sweet and kind gentleman.

Survivors include his nephew Andrew Borie and his family in Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bethia Mary Moody in 2004.

Mr. Moody's ashes will be scattered at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard in a private ceremony

Margaret Ann Hill

Obit dated: October 21, 2006

Margaret Ann Hill, 50, of Brookings, died unexpectedly Oct. 15, 2006, at her home of natural causes.

She was born April 12, 1956, in San Jose, Calif., to James Donald Beasley Sr. and Florence Margaret Kerrigan Beasley, and was raised and educated in San Jose and Morgan Hill, Calif.

Following her education, she married Ernest Camacho in Morgan Hill. One child was born of the union, and the couple were later divorced.

Mrs. Hill moved to Brookings 22 years ago. She had worked as a waitress at Chan's, and as a driver for Swift Trucking on their Oregon coastal route. She had also worked for Dial-a-Ride and had driven a taxi while living in Brookings.

In August of 1998, Mrs. Hill was permanently disabled as a result of an automobile accident.

She was an outdoor enthusiast, and enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening and travel. She also liked to listen to music and played guitar and bass guitar.

She was outgoing, her family said, and made friends easily wherever she went.

Survivors include son Andre Wayne Allen of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Irene Margaret and Paulo Casas of Brookings; brothers, William Beasley of Carmillo, Calif., and Jim Beasley; grandchildren Terrence Jordan Allen, Margaret Camacho, Andre Allen Jr., Lezitte Casas, Priscilla Casas and Paulo Casas Jr.; her six-year companion Ralph Estelle and his sons Jayson and Alex Estelle; and many extended family members including the Estelle family.

Private memorial services will be scheduled.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Thomas Francis White

Obit dated: October 18, 2006

Thomas Francis White, 67, of Harbor, died Oct. 4, 2006, in a local hospital of natural causes.

He was born July 14, 1939, in Salem, Mass., to Dennis and Edith Patricia Moore White.

As a young man, Mr. White had served honorably in the U.S. Army National Guard of Massachusetts.

He worked for 20 years as a building contractor before retiring and moving to Harbor six years ago.

Mr. White enjoyed golf, travel, and was a member of the management staff of the San Francisco 49ers during their Super Bowl victories.

Survivors include his daughter Jennifer Pellitier; sisters Barbara Adams and Dorothy Mulcahy; brother-in-law Jim Mulcahy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Dennis White Jr.

Friends are invited to a celebration of life from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Pine Cone Tavern.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2350 Oakmont Way, Suite 205, Eugene, OR 97401.

Douglas Elbert Craig

Douglas Elbert Craig, 53, of Brookings, died Oct. 4, 2006, at his home in Brookings.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at the Veterans cemetery on Cooper Avenue in Crescent City, Calif.

Jack D. Rowley

Obit dated: October 14, 2006

U.S. Marine Corps. Col. (Ret.) Jack D. "Sea Jack" Rowley (Ret.), died Sept. 27, 2006.

Half of his ashes will be scattered at sea off of Harbor. The remaining ashes will be interred in May 2007, with full military honors, at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery at Point Loma in San Diego.

Gerhard Eugene Bakke

Gerhard Eugene "Gene" Bakke, 74, of Brookings died Oct. 10, 2006, at a care facility of natural causes.

Services are pending.
