Dewey Edgar Blackie' Oliver Jr.

Dewey Edgar "Blackie" Oliver Jr., 75, of Yreka, Calif., died July 31, 2006, at his home of natural causes.
He was born in Hattiesburg, Miss., Oct. 23, 1930, to Dewey and Chula Oliver.
Mr. Oliver attended Harbor Grade School on the Winchuck River, and Ophir High School in Ophir.
He owned and operated a logging truck company for 56 years.
Mr. Oliver was a member of the Yreka Elks 1980 and E Clampus Vitus "The Clampers," Humbug Chapter. He had a love for Native American history, artifacts and bead work. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing, old vehicles and Harley Davidson motorcycles. He enjoyed many picnics and gatherings with his friends and family.
Survivors include daughters Sharyn Frances Oliver Alma of Kirkland, Wash., Gloria Leigh Oliver Keeling of Crescent City, Calif.; son Edward Lloyd Oliver of Gasquet, Calif.; brothers Clyde Eugene Oliver of Smith River, Calif., Clarence Lee Oliver of Brookings. Also surviving are four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife Linda Grant Oliver.
At his request no service was held.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097.

Grace Ann Blazo

Grace Ann Blazo, 92, of Brookings, died May 16, 2008, in a local care facility of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Baton Rogue, La., to John and Margaret Bergie.
When she was a child the family moved to Detroit, where she graduated from high school.
Mrs. Blazo married
Frank Anthony Blazo shortly after high school.
During World War II she worked at a facility that made gas masks.
She enjoyed being a homemaker and was known for her great cooking. She tended her gardens that produced her food, and enjoyed working in her yard and growing flowers. She attended various churches throughout her life.
In 2000, she moved to Brookings to be closer to her son's family.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law Richard F. and Dianna Blazo of Brookings, Jim and Jane Blazo of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; brother Steve Bergie of Novi, Mich.; grandchildren Rick Blazo of Felton, Calif., Kelly Blazo of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Katie Blazo of Chicago; great-grandchildren Breana and Katie Blazo of Santa Cruz; great-great grandchild Alyssa Blazo of Santa Cruz. Also surviving are a niece and two nephews; special friends Charles and Lydia Kennedy.
She was preceded in death by her husband and sister, Helen Gerhke .
Memorial donations may be made, in her name, to Friends of Curry County Hospice, P.O. Box 348, Gold Beach, OR 97444.
No service is planned.
Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.
Richard Dallas Cowden

Richard Dallas Cowden, 55, of Harbor, died May 15, 2008, at his home of cancer.
He was born March 17, 1953, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Richard Daniel and Faith Leebell Hughes Cowden.
The family moved to California when he was young. He graduated from Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, Calif.
After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam conflict from 1971 to 1973, returning home with medals.
He lived in Oregon and Alaska and eventually returned to live in Harbor in 2002.
Mr. Cowden enjoyed fishing, hunting, and being outdoors. He was a Christian who belonged to the Brookings-Harbor Christian Church. He was a strong believer in health foods, the healing arts, and massage therapy. He enjoyed giving seminars on growing sprouts, and working with the body so that it might heal itself with different herbs and foods.
Survivors include his children Brandon, Krystal, Cecilia, Hanna, and Sammy; mother Faith Leebell Hughes of Midway City, Calif.; father Richard Daniel Cowden of Escondido, Calif.; brothers Daniel R. Cowden and his wife Amy of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lee K. Cowden of Hermosa Beach, Calif. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister Katherine Estrada.
Memorial contributions may be made, in his name, to any veterans organization.
A private service at sea will be conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.
William 'Bulldozer' Albert Gerkman

William "Bulldozer" Albert Gerkman, 81, a resident of Gold Beach since the late 1940s, died May 15, 2008, of natural causes.
He was born April 23, 1927, in West Linn, to Slovenian immigrants Frank and Francis Gerkman, and was raised and educated in Oregon City.
On Dec. 8, 1950, he married
Corine Clauson in Gold Beach.
Mr. Gerkman spent more than four decades working in the woods as a "Catskinner," and had worked for several local loggers, including Brownie Coldiron. He enjoyed his work, and participated in developing many of Curry County's logging road systems.
Survivors include his wife Corine of Gold Beach; sons and daughters-in-law William "Bill" and Connie Gerkman of Tacoma, Wash., Mark and Laurel Gerkman of Gold Beach, Greg and Tina Gerkman of Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
At his request, a private burial was conducted at Rogue River cemetery.
Because Mr. Gerkman loved animals of all kinds; memorials may be made in his name to the Curry County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 746, Gold Beach, OR 97444.

Jamie Hoy, 18, of Brookings, died May 18, 2008, of injuries resulting from a car accident near Harbor.

Lloyd Ray Shipman Sr.
Obit dated: May 24, 2008
Lloyd Ray Shipman Sr., 86, of Brookings, died April 28, 2008, at Macklyn House in Brookings of natural causes.
He was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Taft, Calif.
He attended schools in Taft and graduated from Taft Union High School in 1939.
He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, Oct. 16, 1939, and served until Jan. 9, 1946, achieving the rank of warrant officer (jg). He also served one year during the Korean War from 1950 to 1951 as a master sergeant.
He married
E. Jeanne Rush, of Hood River, March 17, 1941. Lloyd Ray Shipman Jr., Robert Lee Shipman, and Mary Elizabeth Shipman were born of the union.
The family lived in San Jose, Calif., where Mr. Shipman was employed by IBM as a tool and die maker for 22 years, serving as a manager for 12 1/2 of those years. He retired in 1981. Mrs. Shipman died in March 1985.
He married
Bernice Taylor, Nov. 30, 1985, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora, Calif., where they made their home. He enjoyed their families, friends and travels within the United States and abroad. He also played the guitar and recorded several songs for his pleasure. Playing golf in Twain Harte was among his other activities.
After Bernice's death in February 2007, Mr. Shipman moved to Brookings to be near family.
Survivors include his children Lloyd Ray Shipman Jr. and his wife Sandra of Brookings, Robert Lee Shipman and his wife Bonnie of Shawnee, Kan., and Mary Elizabeth Shipman and her husband Doug Grabowski of Parkman, Maine. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Jeanne, his second wife Bernice, his parents, siblings, and daughter-in-law Betty Shipman.
A Memorial Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, in Sonora. Inurnment will be in Sonora and Tooele, Utah. Half of his ashes will be placed with his first wife Jeanne in Sonora, and half in Tooele with his second wife Bernice.

Izetta Larie Onstad-Darst

Izetta Larie Onstad-Darst, 86, of Poulsbo, Wash., died May 9, 2008, at Island Health and Rehabilitation on Bainbridge Island, Wash.
She was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Salem, to Archie A. Swan and Gertrude Witham Swan.
She grew up and lived most of her life in the Bremerton, Wash., area, graduating from Bremerton High School.
Mrs. Onstad-Darst lived in Brookings from the early 1980s to 2003, when she moved to Poulsbo to be near family.
She enjoyed painting, music, the ocean and forest, reading and watching old movies. She also enjoyed walking her dog Murfee.
Survivors include her children Stephen Onstad of Ketchikan, Alaska, Kristi Colby and Pete Colby of Poulsbo, Eric Onstad and Laurie A. Onstad of Port Orchard, Wash., Laurie B. Onstad of Littleton, Colo., Marc Onstad and Sharon Onstad of Everett, Wash.; sister Dolores Swan of Florence; niece Cher Thoming of Latourell Falls; nephew Jim Dunnavant of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren Trever and Olivia Munsch of Bonneville, Tiffany and Phil Dudley of Poulsbo, Walter Onstad of Ketchikan, Alan Onstad of Port Orchard, and Gaylon Onstad; great-grandchildren Jacob and Eli Dudley and Trinity Munsch.
