Thelma E. Montank
Aug. 3, 1909 — June 28, 1999

Thelma Elizabeth Montank, 89, of Albany died Monday at Albany Care Center.

She was born in Harvard, Neb., to Fredrick and Emma (Anderson) Ashton. She grew up in Milford and Seward, Neb., graduating from Seward High School in 1927.

She married Herschel J. Montank on Feb. 7, 1931, in Milford, Neb. They lived in Milford and Lincoln, Neb., before moving to Silverton in 1937. They moved to Albany in 1941.

The Montanks owned and operated Albany Septic and Albany Sanitation, and she worked with her husband. Mr. Montank died June 15, 1995.

Mrs. Montank belonged to the First United Methodist Church and the Royal Neighbors of America. She enjoyed playing pinochle with friends, knitting and crocheting. She liked flowers.

Surviving are son Stanley of Albany; daughter Carol Silbaugh of Albany; sisters Enid Fulsang of Philomath and Frances Mundhenke of Milford, Neb.; and grandchildren Pamela, Dean and Elizabeth Foster; Karen Thomas Bender; Cindy Alvis; and Carl and Kevin Montank. There are eight great-grandchildren.

Son Fred died in 1969.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home. Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by burial at Palestine cemetery. Pastor Mark Alvis will officiate.

Contributions in Mrs. Montank’s memory may be made to the Naomi Center for Alzheimer’s disease respite care, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Ethel V. Erickson
Oct. 16, 1909 — June 28, 1999

LEBANON — Ethel V. Erickson, 89, of Lebanon died Monday evening at home.

She was born and grew up in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Karl and Alvilde (Petersen) Olsen. She moved to Los Angeles in 1934.

She married Joseph Jensen in Los Angeles, and he died in 1942. She married Clarence O. Erickson in 1944. They moved to Detroit in 1965 and lived in Mill City before moving to Lebanon in 1972.

The Ericksons owned and operated Snider’s Resort in Detroit and Walt’s Sporting Goods in Lebanon. They sold the business and retired in 1976. Mr. Erickson died in 1984.

Mrs. Erickson’s children and grandchildren were her passion. She especially enjoyed preparing and serving formal dinners for family and friends and spending hours in her garden.

She belonged to the First Baptist Church of Lebanon, the Community Concert Society, the Sons of Norway and the Lebanon Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Surviving are sons Ronald of Corvallis and James of South Fork, Colo.; sister Olga Keenan of Lebanon; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Grove and Vine streets, Lebanon.

Contributions in Mrs. Erickson’s memory may be made to the Lebanon Community Hospital Hospice, in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, Ore. 97355.

Patricia Pitts Maynard Baker
July 2, 1944 - April 14, 2007

Patricia "Pat" (Pitts Maynard) Baker, 62, of Albany died on Saturday April 14, 2007.

She was born July 2, 1944 in Kansas, the daughter of George Albert and Leta M. (Hand) Pitts. She came with her family out west in 1947. She attended schools in Foster and Crawfordsville.

Pat married young and raised three children while living in Crawfordsvile. That marriage ended later in divorce. Pat has been married the last 20 years to Donald Baker, living in Albany seventeen of those years.

Pat enjoyed garage sale-ing and getting out. Don deeply loved her and pushed her wheelchair anywhere she and he wanted to go. Pat also enjoyed getting her family together and was a great cook. She loved jewelry and the little things in life. Her last days were spent as trips to and from dialysis with her husband Don. Pat's greatest joys came from spending time with her granddaughter, Shannon Patricia.

Pat is survived by sons, Jim Maynard of Corvallis, and Danny Maynard Albany; daughter, Lesley Maynard of Sweet Home; mother, Leta M. Pitts; brothers, Tom Pitts of Lebanon, Ed Pitts Sweet Home, and Steve Pitts of Albany; sister, Peggy Dain of Crawfordsville; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, George Albert Pitts.

Viewing will be 4:00-7:00 pm Wednesday, April 18th, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Thursday, April 19th, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel.

Mardi Keltner
April 2, 1949 — June 29, 1999

CORVALLIS — Mardi Keltner, 50, of Corvallis died of cancer Tuesday at home.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of Chester and Roberta (Dillard) Mohler. She grew up in Portland, where she attended Madison High School and Reed College. She graduated with honors from Portland State University.

She worked as a jeweler, goat farmer, camp counselor, systems analyst, technical rigger for film productions and recreational textile consultant for the Rain Shed in Corvallis.

She was an active mountaineer and cave explorer and belonged to the Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit of the Benton County Sheriff’s Department. In the early 1990s she discovered a significant cave extension forming the third longest lava tube in Oregon. She was active in the mapping and exploration of the Masochist Maze in Washington.

She traveled extensively and recently visited Switzerland and Morocco. She participated in numerous Alpine climbs and mountain rescue operations. In 1998 she organized and led a women’s rafting expedition down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

She married Larry King, who survives. Also surviving are brother Chuck Mohler of Ithaca, N.Y.; sister Ann Wederspahn of Geneva, Switzerland; and many loving friends.

Plans for a memorial service will be announced. DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel is handling arrangements.

Donald L. Newport
Jan. 31, 1915 — June 28, 1999

CORVALLIS — Donald L. Newport, 84, of Corvallis died Monday at home.

He was born in Hanford, Calif., to Alfred and Jenny (Kreyenhagen) Newport. He attended the University of California at Berkeley and graduated from Sperry Aeronautical Institute in New York. He worked for 25 years for Pan American Airways in Seattle and San Francisco and 20 years for Hewlett Packard Co.

Mr. Newport married Margaret Fitch on June 19, 1937, in Carmel, Calif. They raised their family in Menlo Park, Calif., and moved to Corvallis in 1997.

The Newports taught round and square dancing in the California Bay Area. Mrs. Newport died this year on Jan. 6.

Mr. Newport enjoyed traveling the back roads of California with his family. He liked to fish, hike and camp in the High Sierras. A family ranch was established in Coalinga, Calif., by his grandparents in the 1800s, and he liked spending time there.

He also enjoyed sailing, tending his garden and telling his grandchildren jokes. He played golf and tennis and belonged to Sons in Retirement.

Surviving are daughters Donna Fraser of Portland, Sally Marston of San Gabriel, Calif., and Pat Newport of Corvallis; brother Bob of Hanford, Calif.; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mr. Newport’s life will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Timberhill Place, 989 N. W. Spruce, Corvallis. His grandson, Pastor Otis Marston Jr., will officiate.

The Newports’ daughters will scatter their parents ashes in California.

John David Snitker
Oct. 14, 1948 — June 28, 1999

Former Albany resident John David Snitker, 50, of Independence died Monday in Salem.

He was a development programming supervisor for Oremet/Wah Chang in Albany at the time of his death.

Mr. Snitker was born in Dallas, the son of John W. and Lena B. Snitker. He was a communications specialist in the Air Force, serving in Japan and Thailand, during the Vietnam War.

He married Lynne Aeschlimann Nov. 14, 1969, in Reno, Nev. The Snitkers lived in Independence, Salem and in Albany for 20 years. They returned to Independence in 1997.

He was part of the Georgia Schilz-Primerica Insurance Team.

Surviving are wife Lynne; son Jefferey of Albany; daughters Daena Marie Flowers of Albany and Lyndsey Downs of Tualare, Calif.; brother James of Alexandria, Va.; sister Donna Ott of Roseburg; and grandchildren Zackary Flowers of Albany and Zoey Souders of Albany.

Mr. Snitker’s funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Farnstrom’s Funeral Home in Independence. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Belcrest Memorial Gardens in Salem.

The family will meet with friends and relatives at Morning Side Methodist Church, 3674 12th Ave. S.E., Salem, immediately following the graveside service.

Contributions in Mr. Snitker’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Neva May Bjornsen
Sept. 27, 1909 — June 29, 1999

LEBANON — Neva May Bjornsen, 89, of Lebanon died Tuesday at home.

She was born in Woolstock, Iowa, the daughter of Morris and Letitia (Luther) Gardner. She married Sigfred “Fred” Bjornsen Oct. 2, 1933, in Woolstock.

The Bjornsens had five children. They lived in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and first came to Lebanon in 1936. Mr. Bjornsen died in 1979.

Mrs. Bjornsen was a homemaker and enjoyed working. After raising her children, she worked for the Stayton Cannery and Albany Frozen Foods, retiring in 1971.

Surviving are sons Morris of Forest City, Iowa, and Fred Jr. of Lebanon; daughters June Hogue of Bandon and Joyce Weatherly and Doris Rose, both of Lebanon; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Several relatives died earlier, including daughters Karen in 1935 and Junis Thieda in 1990, son Clifford in 1997 and twin sister Veva Bygness in 1959.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Lebanon I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Contributions in Mrs. Bjornsen’s memory may be made to the Lebanon Hospice, Lebanon Meals on Wheels or to a charity of the donor’s choice. They may sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, Ore. 97355.

Charles J. Langmack
Sept. 24, 1907 -Jan. 30, 1999

LEBANON -Aviation pioneer Col. Charles J. Langmack, 91, of Lebanon died Saturday at Villa Cascade Care Center.

He was born in Tallman to Robert and Grace (Dyson) Langmack. He attended grade school in Tallman and high school in Lebanon and Portland.

Col. Langmack started flying at age 12. The Albany Airport was founded by him when he first landed his plane at the site in 1920. He later contracted with the owners of the Sternberg family farm to use the ground as an airport for a percentage of his earnings.

In 1923 he began flying from one small town to the next to give exhibitions, a practice called "barnstorming."

He flew commercial aircraft for several years and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in 1933.

He graduated from the Air Corps flying school and the engineering test pilot school. He also completed industrial war college in Alabama and Loran navigation school in Nogoya, Japan.

He flew everything from biplanes to jets.

After retiring, he moved to the family farm near Lebanon. He belonged to the Lebanon Elks Lodge, St. Edward's Catholic Church, the Quiet Birdmen (QBs), 0x5 Aviation Pioneers, the Air Force Association and the Northwest Antique Airplane Club. He was a charter member of the McChord Air Force Museum.

He married Ruth Arlie Conn June 4, 1929, in Albany. Ruth died July 25, 1986.

Surviving are son Chuck of Olympia, Wash.; sisters Avis Scott, Roberta Buker and Norma Dodson, all of Albany; grandchildren Mike Langmack, Lisa Johnston and Krisee Lambert; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Langmack was fond of his dog, Tasha.

Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. At Col. Langmack's request, there will be a private, family service Monday at Willamette Memorial Park, with Pastor Ron Hotrum officiating. Military rites will be provided by personnel from McChord Air Force Base in Washington.

Contributions in Col. Langmack's memory may be made to Safe Haven Humane Society, in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, Ore. 97355.

Dorothy Coughlin
Nov. 14, 1928 - Feb. 3, 1999

LEBANON - Dorothy M. Coughlin, 70, of Lebanon died Wednesday at Lebanon Community Hospital.

She was born in Raymond, S.D., the daughter of Walter and Pansy (Hardwick) Emmitt. She grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa., and moved to Lacomb in 1942 and to Lebanon in 1943.

She married John Coughlin June 24, 1975, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Mrs. Coughlin enjoyed gardening, crafts and crocheting.

Surviving are husband John; mother Pansy Gardner of Lebanon; and sister Judy Gerth of Sweet Home. Son Robert Cunningham, brother Walter Emmitt and sister Ruby Murray died earlier.

There will be no services. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Gladys E. Santesson
November 16, 1915 - May 17, 2007

Gladys Santesson, 91, of Foster, passed away Thursday. She was born in Molalla to Ezra and Ada (Kaufman) Burkholder. Gladys was the youngest of nine children and the last living child.

After graduating from high school, she went to work in Oregon City for a Soil Conservation Company. In 1938 she married Fred Santesson and they moved to Sweet Home in 1945.

She was a member of the Sweet Home Church of Christ on 18th and Long for over 60 years. She taught Sunday School and told Missionary stories for many years.

Gladys was a homemaker with many interests. She belonged to the Sweet Home Home Extension for more than 45 years. She was known for her wonderful cooking and she made the best soups.

She loved to cook, garden, can, clean, dig clams, and fish, and she really loved to play games, especially Pinochle. She loved entertaining and having friends and family around.

Gladys is survived by two children: Sheryl Santesson of Sweet Home and Darrel and his wife Norma Santesson of Vancouver, WA; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was recently preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Santesson.

Memorial service will be 11:00 am Saturday, May 26th, at 18th and Long Church of Christ. If friends do not wish to send flowers, memorial contributions can be made to 18th and Long Church of Christ. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
