Clara Mabel Bogart
Nov. 9, 1902 - Feb. 6, 1999

SWEET HOME - Clara Mabel Bogart, 96, of Sweet Home died Saturday.

She was born in Oakley, Kan., the daughter of James and Hattie (Grover) Lethem. She became a teacher, and taught third grade for $75 a month.

She married Samuel Edward Bogart on Aug. 24, 1924. They lived in Oakley, Kan., and Santa Rosa, Calif. Her husband died March 6, 1970, and she moved to Sweet Home to live with her daughter when her health began to decline.

Mrs. Bogart and her husband had raised chickens and tropical birds. She had helped her son-in-law and daughter cook in Naples, Italy, for sailors of the Sixth Fleet.

She was active in the Oakley Christian Church in Kansas, and Grace Baptist Church in Santa Rosa. She had attended Crowfoot Baptist Church in her wheelchair.

Mrs. Bogart was an excellent cook and especially enjoyed her family.

Surviving are daughter Emma Wolfe of Sweet Home; daughter-in-law Phylis Bogart of Santa Rosa, Calif., son-in-law Ken Thompson of Santa Rosa; and 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, a son and a daughter died earlier.

Mrs. Bogart's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Eggen & Lance Funeral Home in Santa Rosa, Calif. DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel handled arrangements.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Conservative Baptists International, P.O. Box 605, Wheaton, Ill. 60189.

James M. Hessel
Dec. 5, 1952 - Feb. 1, 1999

LEBANON -Former Lebanon resident James Michael Hessel, 46, of Salem died Feb. 1.

He was born in Sebastopol, Calif., and graduated from Lebanon High School. He attended a community college and was a computer programmer for the DMV.

Mr. Hessel belonged to the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Surviving are parents Andrew and Imogene Hessel of Lebanon; brothers Ted Hessel of Los Angeles, Stephen Hessel of Albany, Brian Hessel of Gilbert, Ariz., Lawrence Neill of Cornelius, John Neill of Harrison, Ark., and Michael Neill of Sweet Home.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Albany Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 3030 Grand Prairie Road S.E.

Restlawn Funeral Home of Salem is handling arrangements.

William M. Cook
Nov. 14, 1911 - Feb. 5, 1999

William M. Cook, 87, of Albany died Friday.

Mr. Cook was born in Autauga County, Ala., and moved to Salem in 1940. He worked for Sears for 19 years, retiring in 1971. He moved to Jefferson in the early 1980s and to Albany in 1984.

Mr. Cook was a member of Masons and enjoyed golfing.

Survivors include grandchildren Laura Wipper and Tyler Ferguson, both of Fall Creek, and Kelly Jeffries of Salem.

Private, family services are planned. The Virgil T. Golden Funeral Home of Salem is handling arrangements.

Contributions in Mr. Cook's name may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Salem, Marion & Polk Counties, 1395 Summer St. N.E., Salem, or to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, Ore. 97201.

Leila M. Nelson
Jan. 9, 1910 - Feb. 8, 1999

Leila M. Nelson, 89, of Albany died Monday in Albany.

She was born in Sturgis, S.D., to William and Bess (Sibley) McMackin.

She married Earl O. Nelson on Aug. 17, 1927, in Deadwood, S.D. They lived in Spokane, Wash., and Corvallis before moving to Albany in the early 1960s. Mr. Nelson died in 1973.

The Nelsons owned and operated the Spudnut Shop in Corvallis for approximately 10 years.

Surviving are daughter Marcella Sitton of Albany; brothers Richard McMackin of Albany and Lyle McMackin of Salem; sisters Alberta Krom and Joyce Samp, both of Corvallis, Dorothy Hietman of Davenport, Wash., and Marcella Moss of Washington.

Daughter LaVonne Nelson, brother Eugene McMackin and sister Margaret died earlier.

A memorial service will be scheduled later. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Nancy Marie Pruitt
June 20, 1947 - Feb. 1, 1999

LEBANON - Former Lebanon resident Nancy Marie Pruitt, 51, of La Habra, Calif., died Feb. 1.

She was born in Lebanon to Frank and Arline (Johnson) Pruitt. She grew up and lived in the Lebanon area until seven years ago, when she moved to California.

Mrs. Pruitt had worked in Albany as a receptionist for Dr. C. Robert Hall. She also worked as a secretary for Votaw Precision Technology in California.

She enjoyed car races, including drag races, and liked to spend time in Las Vegas and with her grandchildren.

Surviving are daughters Jodi Petty of Albany and Patti Davis of California; son Steve Looney of Killeen, Texas; brothers Robert Pruitt of Minnesota and Cleve Pruitt of Bend; and five grandchildren.

Daughter Angela Looney died in 1992, and Mrs. Pruitt's companion, Dennis Hoefs, died before she did.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home, with Pastor Ron Hotrum officiating.

Claire D. Swanson
May 15, 1912 - Feb. 8, 1999

LEBANON - Claire Dean Swanson, 86, of Lebanon died Monday at home, following a long illness. Members of her family were with her.

She was born in Tuttle, Okla., the daughter of William and Eunice (Miller) Peterson. She married Alford Traymon Swanson on Nov. 25, 1928, in Oklahoma City.

They moved to Corvallis in 1944, to be nearer Claire's family. In 1961 they moved to Kuna, Idaho, and in 1963 to Lebanon. Her husband died March 11, 1974.

Her husband was pastor of many Willamette Valley churches. Known to share her husband's faith, Mrs. Swanson was a longtime member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Sweet Home.

She liked handiwork, including crocheting, knitting and quilting, and she gave many handmade items to family members. She also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Surviving are sons Burton, Roy, James and Charles, all of Lebanon, Allen of Gig Harbor, Wash., Glenn Swanson of Old Town, Idaho, and Wayne Swanson of Haines; and daughters Melva Robinson of Lebanon, Minnie Reimer and Mary Walters, both of Millersburg, and Eunice Leard, Frances Marsh, Faye Reimer and Marie Cruz, all of Albany.

Also surviving are brothers Sam and Earl Peterson, both of Albany; sisters Carrie Newtson of Scio and Gladys Davis of Portland; and 47 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mrs. Swanson's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with burial following at Gilliland cemetery in Foster.

John Gurney Stauffer
Oct. 27, 1921 - Feb. 11, 1999

LEBANON - John Gurney Stauffer, 77, of Lebanon died Thursday.

He was born in Alexandria, Ohio, to Edward and Cecelia (Gurney) Stauffer.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, during which he flew B-52s and worked as a mechanic. He was the barber to many high-ranking officials and was also a military policeman.

Over the years, Mr. Stauffer worked on a horse ranch, owned a couple of mechanic shops and worked as a mechanic at Cape Canaveral.

He lived in Round Mountain, Calif., before moving to Sweet Home and Lebanon 20 years ago.

Mr. Stauffer was described as a true blue patriot and was a member of the VFW, BPOE, Moose, Shriners and Lions clubs. He was also a 32nd degree Mason.

He was an inventor who loved to play the bones, spoons, washtub and saxophone. He enjoyed traveling and riding Harley Davidson motorcycles. He loved animals.

Surviving are sons David and Dwight of Sweet Home, Huntley of Chino, Calif., and Neal of Redding, Calif.; Daughter Claudia Petersen of Redding, Calif.; companion Margaret Guthary of Lebanon; former wife Beth Thorn; nephew Johnny Miller of Sweet Home; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His son Bryan died earlier

Viewing will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long St., Sweet Home. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Gilliland cemetery with military honors presented by the Sweet Home chapters of VFW, AMVETS and American Legion.

Contributions in Mr. Stauffer's name may be made to the Lions Club.

Nora E. Eddy
Oct. 4, 1912 - Feb. 11, 1999

LEBANON - Nora Eddy, 86, of Lebanon died Thursday at her home at Willamette Manor.

She was born in Duncan, Ariz., to John and Sarah Elizabeth (Angle) Echols.

She was raised in Arizona before attending a nursing course through the Chicago School of Nursing. She moved to Lebanon in 1940 and worked as a practical nurse at Lebanon Community Hospital for 20 years. She then lived in Roseburg for 12 years before returning to Lebanon in 1979.

Mrs. Eddy was a member of the Lebanon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Surviving are son Robert "Ray" of Prineville; daughters Nona Leroue of Yoncalla and Penelope Dorgan of Kingman, Ariz.; sister Zelma Chappell of St. George, Utah; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

Husband Harold Eddy, a daughter June Scheler and brothers Joseph Echols, John Echols, Charles Echols and Samuel Echols died earlier.

The funeral for Mrs. Eddy will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Relief Society Room of the Lebanon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1955 Fifth St. First Counselor William Elder will conduct the service. Viewing will be held at the church prior to the service.

Burial will follow at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery

J. Glen Strughold
July 4, 1917 - Feb. 12, 1999

LEBANON - J. Glen Strughold, 81, of Lebanon died Friday at Villa Cascade Care Center.

Born in Independence, Mo., the son of John and Ruth Strughold, he grew up on a Colorado ranch. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, was wounded and honorably discharged.

He married Esther Wheeler May 20, 1945, in Burlingame, Calif. Both worked for United Airlines in South San Francisco. His wife died earlier.

Mr. Strughold began work for the Hillsboro Police Department in 1949 and was a committed officer for 28 years. He also owned and operated a printing and direct mail advertising business, and worked the two jobs until his 1977 retirement. He moved to Lebanon after retiring.

He belonged to the Lebanon American Legion Post and Moose Lodge.

Mr. Strughold especially enjoyed working and learning. In Lebanon he enjoyed gardening on a grand scale, and was known as a dreamer, inventor and builder.

As his health failed in recent years, his sense of humor grew stronger.

Surviving are daughters Irene Strughold-House and Jean McGinnis, both of Boise, Idaho; brothers Harold and Donald and friend and caregiver Shaunie Vitale.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home, with Pastor Ron Hotrum officiating.

Edward E. Nixon
April 30, 1918 - Feb. 13, 1999

Former Harrisburg resident Edward E. Nixon, 80, of Bellfountain died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Corvallis.

He was born in Culver to Emery and Anna (White) Nixon, and moved to Harrisburg with his family. He married Ruzena Blackwell Jan. 1, 1945, in Bellfountain, where they have lived since.

Mr. Nixon was a self-employed carpenter who remodeled and built homes. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing.

Surviving are wife Ruzena; daughters Rosane Koch of Glenbrook and Mary Jane Jackson; son Jim of Bellfountain; brother Bob of Junction City; sister Myrtle Thompson of Olympia, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at McHenry Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at noon Wednesday at Bellfountain cemetery, followed by a potluck dinner at Bellfountain Community Church.

Lois M. Brady
Aug. 31, 1923 - Feb. 13, 1990

SWEET HOME - Lois M. Brady, 75, of Sweet Home died Saturday at home.

She was born in Brownsville to James and Ethel DeWolf, and attended Foster and Sweet Home schools, including Sweet Home High School.

She married Jesse Brady Sr. on Feb. 13, 1940, in Vancouver, Wash.

Mrs. Brady had lived in Foster 44 years, Oakridge three years and Sweet Home 28 years.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed the outdoors and liked traveling in the mountains. She worked with Boy Scouts and was always willing to help people.

Surviving are husband Jesse Sr. of Sweet Home; son James of Cascadia; sisters Clarine Foust of Idaho and Jean Lawson of Kingsport, Tenn.; and 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Sons Royce and Jesse Jr. died earlier.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Gilliland cemetery.
