Lewis L. Freeman
March 5, 1922 - Feb. 15, 1999

LEBANON - Lewis L. "Jake" Freeman, 76, of Lebanon died Monday at Lebanon Community Hospital.

Born and raised in Anderson, Mo., Mr. Freeman was the son of Hugh and Myra (Doty) Freeman. He served in the Navy during World War II.

He married Marcilea Clark on Dec. 25, 1944, in Miami, Okla., and they soon moved to Lebanon.

Mr. Freeman was a machinist mechanic for more than 30 years for US Plywood, retiring in 1983. He belonged to Trinity Baptist Church in Lebanon for more than 45 years and was a hunter, fisherman and inventor.

Surviving are wife Marcilea; daughters Barbara Bradshaw of Lebanon, Norma North of Manteca, Calif., and Rebecca O'Brien of Albany; brothers Francis of Las Cruces, N.M., and Robert of Beaverton; and sisters Jane Morgan of Lebanon and Elnora Rich of McAlester, Okla. There are nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Three sisters and two brothers died earlier.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mr. Freeman's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church, 72 E. Elmore St., Lebanon. Private burial will follow at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Earl Potter
Jan. 29, 1926 - Feb. 14, 1999

JEFFERSON - Earl Potter, 73, of Jefferson died Sunday at the Oregon Health Sciences University Medical Center.

He was born and grew up in Ashcamp, Ky., the son of Keen and Docia Potter. He married Lois Jean Stanley on June 2, 1947, in Ashcamp, and they moved to Oregon on March 5, 1950.

Mr. Potter worked in a sawmill until 1960 and was a timber faller until 1982, when he retired because of an injury.

The Potters moved to Jefferson in 1984. Mr. Potter especially enjoyed yard work.

Surviving are wife Lois; daughters Pearl Kruse of Gresham, Sally Rose of Florence, and Judy Congrove of Kuna, Idaho; brothers Ben of Riddle and James of Ashcamp, Ky.; and sisters Edith Epling of Elk Horn City, Ky., Alice Mullins of Clintwood, Va., and Rachel Sanders of Pikeville, Ky. There are eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jefferson cemetery.

Thelma L. Townsend
May 10, 1916 - Feb. 14, 1999

Thelma L. Townsend, 82, of Albany died Sunday at Heart of the Valley Care Center in Corvallis.

Born and raised in Summit, Mrs. Townsend was the daughter of John and Sarah (Plunkett) Bottger. She graduated from Philomath High School in 1934.

She was married to L.H. Schmidt and Robert Morgan when she was young. She married Lee Townsend on April 23, 1945, in Portland. They had lived in Yakima, Wash., Dallas and central Oregon, and for many years in the Corvallis/Philomath area.

In Corvallis Mrs. Townsend had been a waitress at the Tea Room, the Corner Cupboard and the Dinette. She worked for Mode-A-Day in Yakima before retiring.

She enjoyed painting and was especially fond of her cat, Buffy.

Surviving are husband Lee; son Robert Schmidt of Corvallis; daughter Alicia Jackson of Tigard; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McHenry Funeral Home. A private, family graveside service will be at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Corvallis.

Helen Derr
December 22, 1916 - July 7, 2007

Helen Belle Derr, 90, of Sweet Home, died Saturday at Bridge Creek Memory Care Community.

Helen was born in Madison Wisconsin to Lloyd and Adah (Chandler) Schindler. Helen lived in Appleton, Wisconsin, Etiwanda, California and came to Oregon in 1970; settling in Sweet Home in 1981.

She worked for the phone company in the 1940s. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sweet Home. She was one of the Senior Singers, a member of the Bridge Club, Garden Club, and the Church Choir. She played Bunko and Pinochle. Helen also was a volunteer at Lebanon Community Hospital for 20 years.

Helen had many friends. Her favorite saying was “The more the merrier.” She had an adventurous spirit, even into her 80s she did activities such as hot air ballooning. Her family was the most important thing to her. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was known as “Gram” or “Grammy.”

Helen is survived by her children, Tim Walker of Westminster, South Carolina and Sharon Brooks of Sweet Home; brothers, C. Robert (Bob) Schindler of Appleton, Wisconsin and Jack Schindler of Wild Rose, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Mark Bottoroff, Brett Walker, Matthew Bottoroff, Heather Fennell, Jason Walker, Ken Brooks, and Tabetha Brooks; twelve great-grandchildren; and the many other children she was “grandmother” to.

She was preceded in death by husband, Jim Walker in 1981; husband Noel Derr; son-in-law, Terry Brooks in 2006; and sister-in-law, Rita Schindler.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, July 12, at United Methodist Church in Sweet Home. Memorial contributions can be made to Lebanon Community Hospital or Alzheimer’s Association. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Theodore B. Volz
July 21, 1919 - Feb. 13, 1999

Theodore Burnell Volz, 79, of Albany died Saturday.

Born in Donaldson, Minn., he was the son of Charles and Leota Volz. He moved to California and Albany as a child and attended Albany schools.

He married Ruth Pierce in 1939 in Albany. His wife died in 1980.

Mr. Volz worked for Simpson Plywood from 1940 to 1944. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1944 until 1946. After the war he worked for Corvallis Dental Lab until 1951, when he became a partner in Volz Lumber. He worked for Oremet from 1956 until 1982, and retired as superintendent of the melting department.

He married Mabel Cramblett in 1982 in Albany.

Mr. Volz belonged to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Albany American Legion Post and the Albany Eagles and Elks lodges. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading and watching football on TV.

Surviving are wife Mabel; son Charles of Redmond; daughters Shirley Bilyeu of Tangent and Debra Macdougal of Tigard; brothers William of Lebanon and Harold of McMinnville; stepdaughters Karen Drushka and Susan Walker of Lebanon; and stepson Virgil Cramblett of Sweet Home. There are 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Son Theodore Jr., brothers William and Harold and sister Grace Pierce died earlier.

A memorial celebration of Mr. Volz' life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. AAsum Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Gardner Chrisman
March 14, 1920 - Jan. 26, 1999

JEFFERSON - Former Jefferson resident Gardner "Buzz" Chrisman, 78, of Oklahoma City died of cancer Jan. 26.

Born in Soldier, Kan., in 1920, he moved to Jefferson where he attended schools and graduated from high school in 1940. Mr. Chrisman joined the Navy in 1943 and served in the South Pacific during World War II.

He married Fern Rieschick July 25, 1945, in San Diego, Calif. They lived in Dallas, where he worked for Mountain States Power Co., and in Sabetha, Kan., and moved to Oklahoma City in 1982.

Mr. Chrisman had owned and operated a mobile livestock feed service and later was an accountant with his son's Oklahoma City firm. He had recently retired.

In Oklahoma City he belonged to the United Methodist Church and to Silver Spurs, a square dance club.

Surviving are wife Fern; sons Dennis and Gary, both of Oklahoma City; twin sister Garnet Pilcher of Jefferson; sister Margie Powell of Jefferson; and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Chrisman's funeral was held in Kansas, with burial in Soldier, Kan.

Susan E. Nofziger
Dec. 3, 1907 - Feb. 16, 1999

Former Albany resident Susan Emily (Baker) Nofziger, 91, died Tuesday in Vale.

Mrs. Nofziger was married to Amos "Pork" Nofziger, who died earlier.

She is survived by half-sister Shirley (Baker) Norton, who was raised by Susan and Amos as if she were their daughter. Seven grandchildren and their families also survive.

Half-brothers Robert and Cyrus Baker died earlier.

A graveside service will be held Friday in Vale.

Lewis M. Swikert
Sept. 19, 1915 - Feb. 15, 1999

LEBANON - Lewis M. Swikert, 83, of Lebanon died Monday at Quail Run Assisted Living Center in Albany.

He was born in Lookingglass, to Jacob and Bertha (Blake) Swikert, and grew up in Washougal and Camas, Wash. He married Hazel Bassett Oct. 28, 1939, in Camas, and they moved to Lebanon in 1947. Hazel died in 1997, and Mr. Swikert moved to Quail Run.

Mr. Swikert worked for Crown Zellerbach in Lebanon before retiring in 1975. He was a longtime member of the First Assembly of God.

Surviving are son Melvin of Roseburg; daughter Mary Hannon of Sebastopol, Calif., sister Edna Hert of Longview, Wash.; half-brother Ronald Cory of Granite Falls, Wash.; and four granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Lebanon First Assembly of God, with Pastor Garland Rogers officiating. A private, family graveside service will be at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Ida A. Vorderstrasse
July 27, 1903 - Feb. 15, 1999

LEBANON - Ida Anna Sophia Vorderstrasse, 95, of Lebanon, died Monday at home.

She was born in Eagle, Neb., to Fred and Lizzy (Graue) Kapperman. She attended a parochial school in Chester, Neb., with lessons in German and English.

She married Paul Vorderstrasse March 28, 1926, in Chester, and they lived in Nebraska, Kansas and Idaho before moving to Lebanon in 1937. They had been married 58 years when Mr. Vorderstrasse died.

Surviving are sons Charles, Wallace and Kenneth, all of Lebanon; daughters Velma Howard of Lebanon and Myrna Nelson of Crawfordsville; brother Fred Kapperman of Chester, Neb., and sister Lydia Heitkotter of Belleville, Kan. There are 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Brother Henry Kapperman, infant daughter Virleen and granddaughters Luann Campbell, Julie Vorderstrasse and Kathy Howard died earlier.

Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mrs. Vorderstrasse's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lebanon, with burial following at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Sylvin J. Bergevin
June 16, 1914 - Feb. 23, 1999

Former Albany resident Sylvin John Bergevin, 84, of Salem died Tuesday of pancreatic cancer.

Born in Yakima, Wash., he graduated from high school in Toutle, Wash., and worked in the logging industry in Washington and Oregon. He last worked for Teledyne Wah Chang in Albany.

He married Frances Jackson on Aug. 30, 1940.

Mr. Bergevin was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was active in church work. His favorite pastime was gardening.

Surviving are wife Frances; sons Marvin and Duane, both of Salem; daughters Mellie Casida of Albany and Delpha Foulger and Darla Barton, both of Salem; and sisters Lea Helmig of Molalla, Alice Coleman of Yakima, Wash., and Lorraine Wassemiller of Prineville. There are 33 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and Mr. Bergevin's funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, both at the Keizer LDS Stake Center, 1375 Lockhaven Drive N.E., in Keizer. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Salem. Restlawn Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Contributions in Mr. Bergevin's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Mid-Willamette Valley Hospice of Salem.
