Mary N. Badger
Feb. 11, 1914 - March 24, 1999

JEFFERSON - Mary N. Badger, 85, of Jefferson died Wednesday at Salem Hospital.

Born in Canton, Ohio, she moved to Jefferson 30 years ago.

She was married twice, first to Riley L. Koertge in 1932 and later to Jesse Badger in 1975. Mr. Badger died in 1990.

Mrs. Badger was a homemaker. Athletic in her youth, she swam regularly at the Albany YMCA until very recently. She was a member of the Y.

She belonged to the Jefferson Christian Church and Jefferson Women's Club. She enjoyed her church and especially liked playing bridge at the Albany Senior Center.

Surviving are son James Koertge of Ogden, Utah; daughter Nancy Menken of Jefferson; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Badger's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Jefferson Christian Church. Private burial will be at Oaklawn cemetery in Corvallis.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Jefferson Christian Church, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Jeanne Grace Carroll Griffin
December 18, 1929 - June 1, 2007

Jeanne Grace Carroll Griffin died June 1st in her home of her fourth cancer. She was 77 years young.

Jeanne was born in South Dakota, one of thirteen siblings to Micheal Joseph Carroll and Mary Neiss Carroll. As a young girl she attended St. Frances, she lived on Rosebud Reservation. She was a nurse at St. Frances Hospital for many years. In 1954 she moved to Albany and in 1977 married Melvin Griffin. Together, they then moved to Sweet Home where she settled for the last 26 years.

Jeanne had a great outlook on life, was always laughing and loved playing jokes on family and friends. Her hobbies included camping, crabbing, clamming, watching WWF wrestling, and she loved traveling. Her family was the joy of her life.

Jeanne is survived by brothers Micheal Joseph Carroll of Idaho, Frank Wade Carroll of Sweet Home; sister, Dorthy Carroll of California; six children, Sandy Carroll, Denzel Conner, Clete Conner, Clarice Brown all of Oregon, Jesse Caudle of Arizona; 14 grandchildren Juaquin Carroll, Shahala Carroll Schaefer, Chelsea Conner, Sara Conner, Amanda Conner, Derek Conner, Nathan Conner, Shasta Conner, Lindsey Brown, Heath Brown, Rachel Brown and Jessteen Caudle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin in 2001.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling her arrangements.

Mary Alice Pasternick
October 16, 1940 - March 29, 2007

Mary Alice Pasternick, 66, of Sweet Home died Thursday. She was born October 16, 1940 in Perry County, Arkansas.

Mary is survived by son, Bill Pasternick, of Salem; brothers, Hal Moore of Hermiston and Don Moore of Pendleton; sisters, Sherry Hamilton of Albany and Jan Johnson of Sedaka, Alaska; mother, Lillian Moore of Hermiston; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by father, Al W. Moore and son, Tony Pasternick, in 1982.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

John D. Wilkinson
July 28, 1920 - March 21, 1999

John Douglas Wilkinson, 78, of Sweet Home, died Sunday in a traffic accident on Highway 99 near Springfield.

Mr. Wilkinson was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, and served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Wilkinson worked 33 years for Willamette Industries and had lived in Sweet Home since 1947.

He was married to Ada (Hutto) Wilkinson, who died in 1976.

In Sweet Home Mr. Wilkinson belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Eagles, Moose and Elks lodges. He enjoyed music, woodworking, hunting and fishing.

Surviving are son Charles of Sweet Home; daughter MarDee Treisch of Canby; brothers Kenneth of Sacramento, Calif., Keith of Lake Tahoe, Nev., Bill of Turner and Wayne of Boston, Mass.; and sisters Alice Chance of Sweet Home and Bobby Ruggles of Turner. There are two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lone Oak cemetery in Stayton. Weddle Funeral Home of Stayton is handling arrangements.

Harold A. Dodge
Sept. 8, 1910 - March 23, 1999

Harold A. Dodge, 88, of Albany died Tuesday.

He was born in Scio to John and Maude (Freitag) Dodge. He grew up in the Scio and Oakville areas.

He married Iona L. Wilson Dec. 10, 1939, in Albany, and they lived in Vancouver, Wash., during World War II, while he worked as a welder in the shipyards. They returned to Albany after the war. Mrs. Dodge died April 5, 1994.

Mr. Dodge worked for M&M Plywood Co., which became Simpson Timber Co. He attended the First Assembly of God and belonged to the Albany Senior Center, where he did volunteer work.

Mr. Dodge enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in his yard. His grandchildren were a joy to him.

Surviving are sons Allen of Portland and Richard of Albany; daughter Faye Kinnee of Albany; sister Lorraine Nichols of Delaware; and seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Fisher Funeral Home.

Mr. Dodge's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Private burial will be at Franklin Butte cemetery in Scio.

Marilyn Donohue
March 18, 1939 - March 23, 1999

JEFFERSON - Marilyn Donohue, 60, of Jefferson died Tuesday.

Born in Swanton, Ohio, she had been self-employed as a caterer.

She married James Donohue, and they lived in Oak Harbor, Wash. before moving to Jefferson in 1982. Mr. Donohue died in 1985.

Mrs. Donohue belonged to the American Motorcyclists of Oregon. Her hobbies included crafts and camping and she especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren and riding her motorcycle.

Surviving are mother Adaline Carter of Swanton, Ohio; daughters Barbara Yzaguirre and Diana York, both of Jefferson and Colleen Donohue of The Dalles; son David of Jefferson; brothers Robert and Ralph Carter, both of Delta, Ohio, and Larry and Tom Carter, both of Swanton, Ohio; and sister Ceal Sirova of Toledo, Ohio. There are nine grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Weddle Funeral Home of Stayton. A graveside service for Mrs. Donohue will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's cemetery, Stayton.

Bette L. Golden
Oct. 16, 1937 - March 18, 1999

SWEET HOME - Bette L. Golden, 61, of Sweet Home died Thursday at Lebanon Community Hospital.

She was born in Riverside, Calif., the daughter of William Woodville and Dorothy Lee (Fox) Cunningham. She moved to Oregon as a teen-ager.

She married Joseph E. Golden April 16, 1990, in Springfield. He died before her.

Mrs. Golden was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. She liked to fish and enjoyed being a grandmother.

Surviving are son Gary Damewood of Sweet Home; daughter Jerri Jo McAfee of Albany; a brother; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home, with Pastor Neal Harris officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, Ore. 97355.

A. `Price' Hawley
Oct. 25, 1907 - March 24, 1999

LEBANON - Arthur "Price" Hawley, 91, of Lebanon died Wednesday at his daughter's Lebanon-area home.

Mr. Hawley was born in Alpine, the son of Ivan and Rosa (Hull) Hawley. He grew up and attended school in the Willamette Valley.

He married Mildred E. Smith Feb. 10, 1934, in Astoria. They lived in the Sweet Home, Crawfordsville and Lebanon areas. Mrs. Smith died May 3, 1993.

From 1945 until his 1972 retirement, Mr. Hawley had worked for Santiam Lumber Co., which became part of Willamette Industries.

He was a past member of the Crawfordsville Alliance Church and liked boating, raising flowers and telling stories.

Surviving are daughters Joyce Haley and Trudy Hawley, both of Lebanon; son Arthur of Woodburn; sisters Vineta Bohannan and Gladys Gallogaly Lane, both of Kennewick, Wash.; and five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mr. Hawley's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home, with Pastor Ron Hotrum officiating. Private burial will be at Gilliland cemetery in Sweet Home.

Fredrick Oscar Santesson
July 30, 1909 - May 9, 2007

Frederick Oscar Santesson, 97, of Foster, died Wednesday. He was born in Garden Home to Benjamin and Sophia Santesson.

He went to school until he was 14, and then went to work on the family farm. He bought his first car, a 1925 Ford Roadster, for $199.00. He then made it into a pick-up to haul the strawberries to market before breakfast. In 1929, he went to work as a carpenter and joined the Carpenter’s Union. Three years later, he went to work at the Bonneville Dam and lived in a bunk house. While there, he built the platform for President Roosevelt’s dedication speech.

In 1938 he married Gladys Burkholder. He started painting state bridges in Coos Bay. In 1940, they moved to Vancouver, Washington where he worked in an Alcoa Aluminum plant during the war. In 1942, Fred went to Kodiak, Alaska to build naval bases. In the evenings, he sanded and refinished hardwood floors. In 1945, Fred bought a Ford Log Truck, and he and Gladys moved to Sweet Home where Fred started in the log truck business.

In his spare time, he loved to dig clams, crab, garden, hunt deer and elk, tinker, and invent. He especially liked spending time with his family. He retired at an early age and he and Gladys spent a lot of time traveling.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Gladys, two children, Sheryl Santesson of Sweet Home and Darrel and his wife Norma Santesson of Vancouver, WA; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is preceded by one sister and two brothers.

Services will be announced at a future date. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Larry A. Hickman
Aug. 19, 1934 -March 23, 1999

Larry Alden Hickman, 64, of Albany died Tuesday at Albany General Hospital.

Mr. Hickman was born in Boise, Idaho, the son of David and Janette (Howell) Hickman. He grew up in Yakima, Wash., where he attended Terrace Heights Grade School and Moxee High School.

He married Mary E. Doud July 3, 1955, in Yakima, Wash.

Mr. Hickman had served in the Army from 1953-1956, during the Korean War. He moved to Corvallis in 1970 and lived in Stayton and Lebanon before moving to Albany.

He was an auto mechanic and a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are wife Mary; son Marvin of Salem; daughters Linda Hellums of Lebanon, Lora Howard of Vancouver, Wash., and Lynette Hickman of Salem; brothers Dallas of Yakima, Wash., and Glen of Springfield; sisters Loretta Wilsey of Yakima and Illa McCumber of Canon City, Colo.; and 13 grandchildren.

Son Larry Michael and daughter LeeAnn died earlier, as did sister Lavora Powers.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Fisher Funeral Home. Mr. Hickman's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Christ, Three Lakes Road, Albany. Burial will follow at Waverly cemetery.

Jean L. Fitzgerald
February 5, 1922 - May 21, 2007

Jean Fitzgerald, 85 of Sweet Home died Monday. She was born to Harry and Isabel (Brown) Zierenberg in Fairbury, Nebraska.

Jean was a longtime resident of Eugene. She came to Sweet Home in 2005 to live at Wiley Creek Community. Her family really appreciated the kind and loving way the staff there took care of her. She was a loving grandmother and mother. She enjoyed reading and watching Animal Planet.

Jean is survived by daughters, Kay Krouskup and husband Jack of San Mateo, California, and Connie Fitzgerald-Sheflin of Lowell; son, John Michael Fitzgerald and wife Theresa of Salem; sister Ruth McWilliams of Spokane, Washington; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one son.

Private services will take place among family along the McKenzie River where they loved to fish. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Lester R. Davis
June 13, 1914 - March 20, 1999

Lester R. Davis, 84, died Saturday in Albany, where he had lived for the past three years.

He was born in Castle, Okla., and moved to California as a very young man. He worked the mines in Death Valley and Mother Lode and was a Forest Service employee. He was the son of Riley and Amanda (Shipman) Davis.

He wed Catherine Woodruff in Columbia, Calif., and they were married for 52 years. She died in 1991.

Mr. Davis was a welder in construction and worked at the Alameda, Calif., shipyards during World War II. He also worked on huge projects including the building of Shasta Dam and Hetch Hetchy Dam near Yosemite National Park.

In California's Central Valley he was a welder for a dairy company until 1974, when he retired. He and wife Catherine moved to the Roseburg area, where they managed a mobile home park. And he taught welding at Umpqua Community College.

Mr. Davis was fond of the outdoors and fished and hunted with friends and family in the Sierra and Callahan mountains. The Davises traveled through the West, enjoying nature, and they spent many hours combing the Pacific beaches.

Music was a passion of his, and his guitar playing connected him with musicians and musical groups all his life, wherever he went. He was an elder and a witness for Christ in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, and he inspired people.

Surviving are daughters Donna Barnard of Albany, Dianne Tanner of Woodland, Wash., and Darlene Warner of Lebanon; grandchildren Kathryn Barnard, Carl and Justin Tanner and Michael Warner; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mr. Davis will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2526 20th Ave. S.E., in Albany.
