Paul Miller

Paul Newton Miller, 56, of Milwaukie died April 21, 1999 in Milwaukie.
He was born in Yakima, Wash. on Dec. 10, 1942. He was a Vietnam veteran and a police officer with the Veterans Administration, before retiring in 1991. He married Brenda Sanders in Portland on Jan. 10, 1970.
He was a member of the Gladstone Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Milwaukie Elks, and coached Little League and football.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda; his mother, Melba Miller of Newport; sons Brett Miller of Portland, James Paul Miller of Los Angeles, Calif. and P.J. Miller of Milwaukie; a sister, Joyce Miller of Salem; a brother, Ron Miller of Knappa; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Saturday at Gladstone Christian Church. Remembrances are suggested to the American Heart and Diabetes Associations.

Emory Chapin

Emory David Chapin, 81, of Waldport died April 21, 1999 at Evergreen Health and Specialty Care Center in Lincoln City.
He was born in Miles City, Mont. on Nov. 13, 1917 to Frank and Louise (Cain) Chapin. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
On Oct. 13, 1950, he married Eloise Venable in Walla Walla, Wash. For 25 years, he worked as a warehouseman for Pendleton Grain Growers, until retiring in 1979.
He was a former commander in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a past member of the Moose Lodge in Waldport. He loved to hunt, fish and crab. For many years, he worked at the Pendleton Roundup.
He was a longtime resident of Pendleton until moving to Waldport 20 years ago, where he resided until his death.
Surviving are his wife, Eloise Chapin of Waldport; a step-son, Robert Bannister of Woodburn; three step-grandchildren, Tami Edwards of Snohomish, Wash., Brandt Bannister of McMinnville and Tricia Bannister of San Francisco, Calif.; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
At his request, no services will be held. Private inurnment will be at Willamette National Cemetery. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Central Coast Humane Society, PO Box 71, Newport 97365, or Waldport Ambulance, PO Box 1419, Waldport 97394.
Pacific View Memorial Chapel is serving the family.

Lucille Van Drimmelen

Lucille May Van Drimmelen, 78, of Newport died at her home on April 24, 1999.
She was born in Glenfire, Wis. on October 27, 1920 to James O. and Maybel Coleman Cook. She had been a resident of Roseburg for 25 years and of Independence for 17 years. She had been a restaurant owner/operator and also had a Kirby franchise prior to retiring at age 62.
Survivors include her daughter, Harlean Gregg of Newport; sons Raymond "Buddy" Hagedorn of Albany and Denzel Hagedorn of Roseburg; a brother, James A. Cook of Bend; a sister, Clover McKenzie of Salem; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Bateman Funeral Home. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vernie Hansen

Vernie M. Hansen, 85, of Newport died at her home on April 24, 1999.
She was born in Toledo on Jan. 21, 1924 to Ross and Edith McElwain. She had been a resident of the Toledo/Newport area most of her life.
She married Raymond Hansen in Toledo in May 1934. He preceded her in death in 1958. Until her retirement in 1968, she was a rental manager.
She was an volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program. In 1987, she was voted a Super Senior.
Survivors include her son, Ron Hansen of Corvallis; grandchildren Scott Hansen of Hood River and Kari Sweet of North Bend; and great-grandchildren Rachal and Emily Hansen of Hood River and Samantha Sweet of North Bend.
Graveside services will be held at Eureka Cemetery in Newport at 2 p.m. Thursday. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Elsie "Kate" Landess

Elsie "Kate" Landess, 83, of South Beach died April 25 in South Beach.
She was born in Earlington, Wash. on Nov. 2, 1915 to Ralph and Verna Brown Daniels. She moved from Washington in 1940 and married Wilbur Landess on Nov. 18, 1941 in Taft. She and her husband purchased the North Lincoln Trading Post, later known as The Village Blacksmith.
She worked as a school cook at Oceanlake and Delake schools in Lincoln City.
She later worked at North Lincoln Sanitary Service.
She moved to Lincoln City in 1996 and lived there until 1996, when she moved to South Beach.
She enjoyed gardening and sewing.
Survivors include her son, Art Garding of Lincoln City; a daughter, Sue Painter of Newport; two step-children; a sister, Mary Ellen Baker of Washington; sons David Daniels of Florida and Dan Daniels of Canyonville; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993.
No public services will be held. Bollman Funeral Home in Dallas is in charge of arrangements.
Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation.

Kay Shineflug

Kay Shineflug of Newport, died Dec. 4, 1998. Her full obituary ran in the Dec. 9, 1998 issue of the News-Times.
A memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bateman Funeral Home, 915 NE Yaquina Heights Drive, Newport.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lincoln County Children's Advocacy Center, 122 NE 47th St., Newport.

Maxine Day

Maxine A. Day, 78, of Salem died April 23, 1999 in Salem.
She was born in Vancouver, Wash. on Jan. 4, 1921.
She met her husband, Joe, in high school; they were married in Seaside on Sept. 5, 1942.
She attended Oregon State University, Corvallis. She moved to Salem in 1983 from Newport.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Day of Salem; daughters Sandra Downs and Susan Woods, both of Keizer; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Belcrest Mausoleum Chapel in Salem.

Jewell Karlsen

Jewell Virginia Karlsen, 80, of Newport died at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center on April 26, 1999.
She was born in Tahlequah, Okla. on Feb. 28, 1919. She previously lived in Siletz.
She had belonged to the congregation of Jehovah Witnesses since 1940,
She married her husband, Richard "Dick" Karlsen, in 1944 in Reno, Nev.
She is survived by her son, Sheridan Karlsen of Siletz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, in 1994.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Newport.
Remembrances are suggested to the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc., 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201.
