Steven Frentress
August 27, 1960 - August 31, 2006

Steven Frentress, 46, of Sweet Home died Thursday. He was born to Thomas and Cosette (Wyneger) Frentress in Roseburg.

He lived in Myrtle Creek, Oregon for four years, passing through Reedsport and starting school in Eugene. He later moved to Sweet Home and graduated from Sweet Home High School. After graduation, Steven entered the US Navy and traveled the world as West Admiral Chef for eight years. When he left the Navy, he moved to California and worked with Home Depot for eleven years. While in California, Steven met Shelley Johnson. Together, they moved to Sweet Home to be closer to his parents.

Steven is survived by life partner, Shelley Johnson; parents, Thomas and Cosette Frentress; brother, Jay Frentress of Eugene; sisters, Jan Banks of Newton, Kansas and Cindy Person of Lebanon, Oregon; nephews, Jessy Person, Chris and Jeff Banks; and niece, Erica Banks.

Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Mida Wallace
September 15, 1922 - December 31, 2006

Mida Wallace, 84, of Albany died Sunday. She was born to Clarence and Florence (Ivey) Windom in Paisley, Oregon.

Mida moved to Sweet Home in 1942. Her husband drove a log truck, while she did the paper work and bookkeeping. When her husband passed away in 1997, she moved to Albany to be closer to her ailing mother.

She is survived by daughters; Patsy Good and Bobbi Wallace, both of Albany, and Beverly Fishe of Lebanon; son, Bill Wallace Jr. of Lebanon; sisters, Betty Reed of Albany, Jean Guiney of Ashland, and Delores Rictor of Moxee, Washington; brothers, Carl Windom of Corvallis and Lee “Butch” Windom of Tangent; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends; 8 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Mida was preceded in death by husband, Bill “Red” Wallace in 1997; granddaughter, Terry Wallace in 1996; her father, mother, and two brothers.

Viewing will be Thursday, January 4, from 4:00-7:00 pm at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Services will be Friday, January 5, at 11:00 am at Sweet Home Evangelical Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Evergreen Hospice, c/o Sweet Home Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long Street, Sweet Home, OR 97386.

Kenneth Carl Elavsky
July 9, 1924 - December 82, 2006

Kenneth Carl Elavsky, 82, died Sunday, December 24, 2006. He was born July 9, 1924 in Minnesota, the son of Mike and Mary (Profant) Elavsky.

He entered the U.S. Navy as a young man during WWII and served in the South Pacific aboard the U.S. Smalley. He came west after the war, married , and had a family. Kenneth worked on railcars in Portland, Oregon. He eventually became an independent scrap metal worker. Kenneth came to Sweet Home about two years ago to be closer to family.

Kenneth enjoyed Portland Wrestling, nature, and the outdoors.

He is survived by his children, Linda Mulvanny of Sweet Home and Karen Grosnicoles of Gresham, Oregon; two brothers, Mike Elavsky and Ray Elavsky; sister, Mary Oloson; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one soon to be great, great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Elavsky; one sister; and one brother.

A memorial gathering will take place at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2007 at the Skyline Inn in Sweet Home. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Edward J. Streff
Aug. 31, 1911 - April 26, 1999

Former Linn County resident Edward J. Streff, 87, died Monday in St. Helens.

He was born in Stayton and graduated in 1933 from Stayton High School. He married Margaret Keidel in 1936, and they owned and operated Sunrise Grocery in Albany for more than 15 years. They later owned and operated 88 Cent Stores in The Dalles, Hood River and La Grande. Margaret died in 1982.

He married Annie Mae Platt in 1988.

Mr. Streff had lived in Stayton, Mill City, Portland and Sublimity and spent the last three months living with his daughter.

He enjoyed reading, salmon fishing, and attending his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sports events. He was an active volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Meals on Wheels, and he belonged to the Knight of Columbus.

Surviving are wife Annie of Albany; daughter Roberta Wood of St. Helens; son Dr. Ronald Streff of Littleton, Mass.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

All services will be in Stayton. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Monday at Weddle Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, followed by burial at St. Mary's cemetery.

Contributions in Mr. Streff's name may be made to Hospice of Legacy Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 3426, Portland, Ore. 07208; or to a local St. Vincent de Paul conference.

Margaret R. Person
Aug. 1, 1934 - April 25, 1999

TANGENT - Margaret R. "Margie" Ruth Person, 64, of Tangent died Sunday at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene.

She was born in Ladysmith, Wis., to Tom and Ruth (Higgins) Bunce, and she grew up in Jefferson. She married Parnell Person in 1952 in Jefferson.

The Persons lived in Healdsburg, Calif., for a year before moving to Albany in 1957. They later lived in Scio and Medford and returned to Albany. They settled in Tangent in 1976.

Mrs. Person worked at Sunset Manor in Albany, Corvallis Manor in Corvallis and Southern Oregon Convalescent Hospital in Medford.

After returning to the Albany area she worked for Linn Care Center and was charge nurse for Waverly Guest Home. In 1972 she started Elder Guest Cottage and ran it until her retirement in 1984.

She belonged to the Albany Seventh-day Adventist Church. Her hobbies includes fishing, baking bread, playing the piano and guitar and singing. She enjoyed the outdoors and liked animals and country and gospel music.

Surviving are husband Parnell; sons Kenneth of Dallas, David of Lacomb and Gerald of Ontario; daughter Jean Kimble of Tangent; brother Tom Bunce of Scio; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at AAsum Funeral Home. A celebration of Mrs. Person's life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Willamette Memorial Park in Millersburg, with Pastor Paul Cole officiating.

Freeman Stutzman
Aug. 3, 1921 - April 26, 1999

Freeman Levi Stutzman, 77, of Albany and Sun City, Ariz., died Monday in Sun City.

Mr. Stutzman was born in Greentown, Ind., to Joseph and Mattie (Sommers) Stutzman. He moved with his family to Oregon in 1938.

He married Irene V. Kropf on Nov. 28, 1943, in Harrisburg, Ind.

Mr. Stutzman did civilian public service work in Montana, Virginia and California from 1942 until 1946. Then he farmed near Shedd.

He was a construction worker and builder in Florida, Georgia, Arizona and Alaska, and returned to Oregon in 1975, to farm near Lebanon. After retiring, in 1991, he divided his time between Jefferson and Sun City.

Mr. Stutzman attended Jefferson Baptist Church and Sun City's Sweetwater Community Church. He helped build the sanctuary at the Jefferson Baptist Church.

He enjoyed outdoor recreation including hunting, fishing, hiking and climbing.

Surviving are wife Irene; daughters Clista McPherson of Sedona, Ariz., Virginia Herndon and Kathy Austin, both of Salem; Alyce Doughton of Jefferson and Karen Stoltzfus of Manheim, Pa.; and brothers Earl of Albany, Paul of Harrisburg, Alvin of Blackville, S.C., and Gilbert of Lebanon; and sisters Rosa Weaver of Eugene and Esther Guinn of Venice, Fla. There are 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home. Mr. Stutzman's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview Mennonite Church, with Pastor Dee Duke and Roy Hostetler officiating. Burial will be at Alford cemetery north of Harrisburg.

Contributions in Mr. Stutzman's memory may be made to Teen Challenge or to the Jefferson Baptist Church Building Fund, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

KateLyne LeeAnne Dugan
March 22, 1997 - June 25, 2007

KateLyne LeeAnne Dugan, 10, of Sweet Home, passed away Monday. She was born in North Bend to Patrick L. D. and Leslie A. Dugan.

KateLyne lived in Coos Bay, Eugene, Springfield, North Bend, and Idaho Falls within her first four years of life. She moved to Sweet Home when she was 5 years old. She went to Foster Elementary for kindergarten through second grade and Hawthorne Elementary for third grade.

KateLyne enjoyed collecting pretty rocks for Mom. She liked getting Fabergé eggs for Dad. She liked to play video games with her brother, and she saved bread to feed the ducks at Sankey Park. She liked to collect pictures and figurines of pigs with her "Nana." She also enjoyed going to get treats with her "Pops."

KateLyne attended Riverside Christian Church. She loved to go to Brownsville Lake and Foster Lake to swim and loved to play in the snow. She enjoyed family outings, local parades, Sportsman Holiday, and the rodeo to see the clowns, where she formed a special friendship with the clown named "JJ."

She is survived by her parents, Patrick and Leslie of Sweet Home; her brother, Aaron Dugan; grandparents, Patrick Edward and Charlotte Dugan of Idaho Falls and Herb and Leann Roth of Coos Bay; great grandparents, Vern Roth of Salem and Richard and Julie Amundson of Sweet Home. She held a special place in her heart for her Pops and Nana, Bob and Lona Ikola, and her "Big Sister," Lilly Gilbert; her extended family, Grandma Gayle Davis, Auntie Kishya Davis, Auntie Lacey Francis; her tutor and dear friend, Terri Boshart; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins that are traveling from Idaho, Arizona, and all over Oregon; and Godmother, Angie Coleman of Nevada.

She is preceded in death by her great grandmother, Dorothy Roth, friend in life and death, Brian Gilbert, and a lot of family members.

Memorial service will be at 6:00 pm Friday at Riverside Christian Church. An account has been opened at Umpqua Bank to help with the expenses. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Rakkel Latimer
June 1, 1910 - April 25, 1999

LEBANON - Rakkel Latimer, 88, of Lebanon died Sunday at the Lebanon Community Hospital.

Born in Minot N.D., she was the daughter of John and Clara (Foss) Lee. She grew up in Minot and Bismarck, N.D., and attended St. Olaf College.

After her father's death in 1928, She worked as a mail censor for the prison. She attended Minot State Teachers College, earning her degree in education in 1931.

She married William Israel Latimer on Dec. 5, 1936. They lived in Everett and Yakima and Marysville in Washington. Mr. Latimer died Jan. 16, 1970, and Mrs. Latimer moved to Lebanon in 1980.

She had taught high school for three years in North Dakota and had worked for the Federal Employee Relief Administration.

An active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, she was a past member of the Lebanon Community Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer reader for the Lebanon schools.

Surviving are sons John "Bill", Steve and Jerry, all of Lebanon, and Richard of Gig Harbor, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Three brothers and three sisters died earlier and a grandson died in 1996.

Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Huston-Jost Funeral Home. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Bruce Little officiating. Burial will follow at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Contributions in Mrs. Latimer's memory may be made to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church or the Lebanon Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, or the American Cancer Society. They may be sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, Ore. 97355.

Graves Story

Former Albany resident Graves Story, 81, of Paducah, Ky., died Friday.

Mr. Story was a Navy diver in the South Pacific during World War II, working on the repair and salvage of ships. After the war he groomed horses at race tracks in Chicago and New Orleans. Later he was a mail carrier and clerk in Paducah for 23 years. His wife, Virginia, died four years ago.

He and his wife moved to Albany to be near their daughter, and he returned to Paducah four years ago, after his wife died.

Mr. Story had enjoyed working at the Oregon State University Book Store in Corvallis and had attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany. He belonged to the Catholic church In Paducah, and donated the bells in the bell tower there, in memory of his wife.

Surviving are daughter Sandra and uncle Jack Ford.

His funeral was held Monday in Paducah. Roth Funeral Home of Paducah handled arrangements.

John B. Weber
June 2, 1941 - April 24, 1999

SWEET HOME - Former Sweet Home resident John B. Weber, 57, of Ashland died Saturday.

Mr. Weber was born in Yoncalla, the son of John and Fay (Hungerford) Weber. He was disabled and lived at the Fairview Home in Salem before moving to Ashland 11 years ago.

He had enjoyed carpentry work while growing up and could tell whether or not something was square.

Surviving are sister Nola Hasson of Coos Bay; brother Jim of Pleasant Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Gilliland cemetery in Sweet Home. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel are handling arrangements.

Lillian May Haight
July 5, 1941 - April 25, 1999

CORVALLIS - Lillian May Haight, 57, died Sunday at her Corvallis home.

She was born in Wells to Asa and Lena Haight.

Lillian was an avid Smurf collector and especially enjoyed her many cats and dogs.

Surviving are son Ed Gish; brother Kennith Haight of Corvallis; and sisters Violet Myers of Albany and Florance Rife of Philomath. Sister Vivian Haight died earlier.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Friday at McHenry Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hill Top cemetery in Independence.

Sherman Harris Sr.
May 2, 1905 - April 23, 1999

Former Albany resident Sherman D. Harris Sr., 93, of Boring died Friday.

Mr. Harris was born in Fairview, Mo., to Clem and Elizabeth Harris. He married Lena Mae Randall in 1922, and she died before he did.

Mr. Harris served in the Army during World War II and was stationed at Camp Adair. He lived in Millersburg from 1948 until 1968, when he moved to Portland. He had lived by himself until this January, when he went to Boring to be with his daughter.

Mr. Harris worked many years for Edwards Cabinet Co. in Albany, and later had his own store. He enjoyed gardening.

Surviving are daughter Ora Mae of Boring; sons Sherman Jr. and Jim, both of Portland; 24 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Those relatives who died earlier include children Cecil, Goldena and Leon and 13 brothers and sisters.

No public services are planned. Burial will be at Willamette National cemetery.
