Christiane Tarver
May 13, 1938 - April 16, 1999

Christiane Tarver, 60, of Albany died Friday at home.

She was born in Saint-Quentin, France, the daughter of Rene and Alice Yvonne (Dudebout) Boulanger. She moved to Albany from France in the early 1960s.

She married Terry Tarver Dec. 10, 1966, in Jefferson, and they had divorced.

Mrs. Tarver worked for Albany Care Center. She belonged to the Tangent Community Church.

Surviving are sons Peter of Eugene and Michael of Albany; brothers Andre, Daniel, Bernard, Jilles, Jacques, Rene, Gilbert and Jean-Paull Boulanger, all of France; sisters Jacqueline Bondon of France and Marie Therese Taylor of Plano, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Sister Bernadette Boulanger died earlier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Tangent Community Church. Private burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Frank Haas officiating.

Susan Lucile Williams
April 18, 1920 - April 18, 1999

SWEET HOME - Former Sweet Home resident Susan Lucile Williams, 79, of Beaverton died Sunday at home.

She was born in Lincoln, Neb., the daughter of Norval and Lucile (Whitworth) Bennett. She lived in Nebraska and Wyoming before moving to Sweet Home in 1930. She graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1938.

She moved to Medford in 1948, and later lived in Moses Lake and Omak in Washington. She lived in Portland before moving to Beaverton.

Mrs. Williams worked for Sears as a manager trainer for many years. She traveled extensively in her work.

She belonged to the Reames Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and had many interest, including reading and traveling.

Surviving are daughters DeLores Green of Medford; Phyllis Williams of Beaverton and Ilene Torgersen of White City; brothers Clinton Bennett of Foster and Edward and Leo Bennett, both of Sweet Home; sister Dorothy Nelson of Beaverton; and grandsons Ronald Green and Don Torgersen.

Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Gilliland cemetery, with Pastor Terry Medina officiating.

Contributions in Mrs. Williams' memory may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Lena Marie Gibbs
July 29, 1978 - June 4, 2007

Lena Marie Gibbs, 28, of Glendale, Arizona died on June 4, 2007. She was born in Lebanon July 29, 1978 to Roger Dale and Tammy Eileen Jobe. She grew up in Portland.

She took care of her grandfather which started a life long interest in nursing and caring for others. Lena worked with hospice and other care agencies. She was a good mom and loving friend. She will be very missed by mother, brother, and children.

She is survived by two sons, Michael and Travis Kennedy; mother, Tammy Wijt; father, Roger Dale Jobe; brother, John Gibbs; nephew, Logan Gibbs; aunt, Orletta Gibbs; uncles, Donny, Greg, Jim Butch, and Dan Gibbs; grandma, Linda Gibbs; and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Don Gibbs.

A graveside service will take place 10:00 am Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Gilliland cemetery. Contributions can be made to help family pay funeral expenses. Send to Sweet Home Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long Street, Sweet Home, OR 97386.

Harry "Don" Jewett
July 20, 1923 - May 19, 2007

Harry “Don” Jewett, 83, of Sweet Home, Oregon died on Saturday, May 19, 2007.

Don was born on July 20, 1923 in Everett, Washington, the son of Harry and Olive (Wixson) Jewett.

He is survived by his three children, David Jewett of Sweet Home, Leola Jewett of Eugene, and Dena Wixson of Foster; step-brothers, Vic Wentworth, Don Wentworth, and Harold Wentworth, all of Washington; nine grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 pm Tuesday at the American Legion cemetery in Granite Falls, Washington. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling services.

Jeannette Olson
March 9, 1917 - April 19, 1999

Jeannette McClain Olson, 82, of Albany died Monday at Albany General Hospital.

She was born and grew up in Albany, the daughter of J. Deo and Pearl (Smith) McClain. She graduated in 1934 from Albany High School and later from Albany College. She lived in Albany all her life.

She married Roy H. Olson Jan. 25, 1942, in Albany, and he died May 24, 1971.

Mrs. Olson worked for approximately 15 years for the Linn County Tax Department and eight years for the Linn County Sheriff's Office. She retired in 1981.

She was a 70-year member of the First United Methodist Church. For 61 years she belonged to Sigma Beta Phi, earning many of the sorority's honors. A member of the Albany Junior Women's Club, she served as head chaperon for the Timber Carnival court for two years.

Surviving are son Rick of Eugene; daughter Janelle Brown of Albany; sister Edna Cox of Albany; and grandchildren Ryan and Kristin Brown. Her twin sister, Geneva Menchick, died earlier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home. Mrs. Olson's funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Donna Pritchard officiating. Private entombment will be at Willamette Memorial Mausoleum.

Catherine Virginia Muir
October 16, 1920 - August 8, 2007

Catherine Virginia Muir, age 86, of Sweet Home, passed away August 8, 2007. She was born in Centralia, Washington to William Francis and Sadie Madeline (Edwards) Brooks. She lived in Portland until 1948 and has lived in Sweet Home ever since.

She was a member of Sweet Home Community Chapel for the past few years. Prior to that, Catherine was a member and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for 40 years at the Bethel Lutheran Church.

Catherine knew and taught classes on Pine Needle Basketry. She oil painted and did crafts. She and her husband, Jim, were avid rock hounds. She loved the beach, camping, picnicking, hunting, and fishing and even bagged five deer on her own. She was an enthusiastic Seattle Mariners fan, right up to the very end. Catherine loved her family and was a friend to all.

Catherine is survived by her children: Donna Rae Nelson of Sweet Home, William David Townsend of Tonopah, Arizona, Laurel Lee Colvin of La Pine; and 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Muir, in 1988, brother, Kenneth Brooks, in 2005, and sister, Madeline Garver-Smith, in 2005.

A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 19th, at Sweet Home Community Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Special Olympics. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Kirby Lee Backer
Sept. 6, 1957 - April 17, 1999

SCIO - Kirby Lee Backer, 41, of Scio died Saturday in a tractor accident.

He was born in Montbello, Calif., moved to Albany in 1958 and attended St. Mary's Grade School through sixth grade. He attended Memorial Middle School and graduated from West Albany High School.

He married Deborah Druliner, Aug. 2, 1980 at St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville.

Mr. Backer worked at Golden West Homes and Pepsi Cola and was employed by Mt. Hood Beverage of Salem at the time of his death.

He belonged to St. Bernard Catholic Church in Scio, was active in sports programs with his sons and was dedicated to his family. He especially enjoyed family hunting and fishing trips.

Surviving are wife Deborah; sons Casey, Andrew, Scottie and Patrick, all of Scio; parents Steve and Marsha (Brummer) Backer of Albany; brothers Kim of Scio and Kelly of Albany; and sisters Kris King of Seaside, and Konnie Perlenfein and Kari Simpson, both of Albany. There are many nieces and nephews.

A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at AAsum Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Fathers John Betts and Pat Walsh officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Miller cemetery in Scio.

Contributions may be made to a special fund in memory of Kirby Backer at Klamath Bank in Scio or any branch of US Bank.

Emma L. Bergquist
April 29, 1921 - April 14, 1999

CORVALLIS - Former Corvallis resident Emma Lucille Bergquist, 77, of Portland, died Wednesday.

Born in Kansas City, Kan., to Aubrey and Merle (Brown) McDaniel, she was married at age 19. She worked for H.D. Lees in Kansas City and Joplin, Mo., and had worked in a glove factory.

She moved to Corvallis in the 1950s and worked at MacGregor's Variety Store. In the 1960s she moved to Houston, Texas, where she met and married Arthur Bergquist. He died before she did. She had moved to Portland.

Mrs. Bergquist enjoyed fishing, cooking, gardening and playing games. She especially liked flowers and raising okra.

Surviving are daughters M. Ann Randall of Jefferson and Lucille Newbourn of Portland; brother Edward Brown; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Sister Gladys Saunders died earlier.

Mrs. Bergquist's funeral is scheduled at 1 p.m. today at DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, with the Rev. Allan Stansvad officiating.

Darren Cunningham
Aug. 8, 1959 - April 18, 1999

Darren Lee Cunningham, 39, of Albany died Sunday at Albany General Hospital.

He was born in Tulare, Calif., grew up in Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1977. He served in the Navy and was discharged in 1983. He married Robin Nelson May 25, 1985, in Lebanon.

Mr. Cunningham was a computer technician and electronics was his hobby.

He had lived in California where he belonged to a search and rescue team. In Albany he was a member of Living Water Christian Assembly.

Surviving are wife Robin; children Cory and Tasha, both of Albany; parents Verla (Bagwell) Cunningham of Palm Springs, Calif., and William Cunningham of Lebanon; brothers Aaron and Don, both of Albany, Eric of Orange County, Calif., and Ron of Lebanon; and sister Dorla Martin of Florida.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Living Water Christian Assembly, 401 Main St. S.E.

John Francis Seward
April 6, 2007

John Francis Seward, 29, of Sweet Home, died Monday, April 6, 2007. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Derrell Wade Hill
Nov. 28, 1938 - April 17, 1999

CORVALLIS - Derrell Wade Hill, 60, of Corvallis died Saturday at home.

He was born in Dierks, Ark., to Arthur and Lou (Forgey) Hill. He moved to Klamath Falls in 1947, and his class was the first to graduate from Douglas High School. He letter in football and wrestling.

He attended Southern Oregon University for two years. He married Janice Gray Feb. 18, 1961, in Roseburg.

Mr. Hill was owner and operator of the Flying A service station in Sutherlin, when he was drafted into the Army. In 1966 he went to work for Bell Telephone in Roseburg and in 1970 was transferred to Corvallis. He retired in 1992.

Mr. Hill belonged to the Telephone Employees Union and the American Bowling Congress.

He was known as a devoted family man, grandfather and friend. His hobbies included genealogy, bowling, traveling, boating and water skiing. He enjoyed the ocean, watched old movies and was an avid fan of Star Trek.

Surviving are wife Janice; sons Brent and Brian, both of Corvallis; daughters Brenda Griffin of Kent, Wash., and Barbara Hill of Corvallis; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McHenry Funeral Home with Pastor Curtis Lindsley officiating. McHenry Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Harold F. Lander
June 21, 1914 - April 17, 1999

Former Linn County resident Harold F. Lander, 84, of Prineville died Saturday.

Mr. Lander was born in Independence, the son of Frank and Elva (Stanfurl) Lander. He grew up in Bellfountain.

He married Lena E. Richards June 15, 1935, in Corvallis. She died May 5, 1998.

For many years Mr. Lander logged in Benton and Linn counties. He then worked for Hammond Lumber Co. of Lacomb and later for plywood mills in Corvallis and Albany.

He retired in 1976 and lived in Sisters and for 17 years. He lived at Crooked River Ranch before moving to Prineville in 1996.

A member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge since 1954, Mr. Lander enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, boating. The weekend before his death, he fished at Prineville Reservoir.

Surviving are son Harold A. Lander of Lebanon; daughters Alva Perez of Prineville and Artheda Henderson of Lebanon; brother William of Lebanon; sisters Edna Oeder of Lebanon and Jean Waschnits of Jefferson; and 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Son Edward died in 1939.

No services are planned. The Prineville Funeral Home handled arrangements.
