Hazel T. Phelps
July 23, 1908 - April 5, 1999

Hazel T. Schindler Phelps, 90, died Monday at her Corvallis home.

She was born in Gresham, the first child of Thomas and Martha (Zeek) Barker. She grew up in Brownsville, Toledo and Corvallis, and graduated from a beauty college in Salem.

Widowed three times, she had married Zola L. Burres in 1924; he died in 1932. Her second husband was Ralph Schindler, a judge and clerk for Benton County. Husband Walter Phelps died in 1993.

Mrs. Phelps owned and operated beauty shops in the Corvallis and Albany areas. She also taught hundreds of students as head instructor at Phagan's Beauty College in Corvallis.

She had attended the United Methodist Church in Monroe. She was known to live life with gusto, and especially enjoyed making fried chicken and pies for Sunday picnics.

She liked crabbing and clamming at the coast, attending Saturday night dances and traveling. She also enjoyed providing friends with apples and tomatoes from her yard.

She had helped a grandson check in the new stock and fill customer's orders at his book store.

Surviving are daughter Betty Rictor Reeves of Corvallis; siblings Lola Rucker, Berta Hall and Donald Barker, all of Lebanon; daughter-in-law Carol Burres of Albany; and grandchildren Jack, Larry, Joe and Bob Rictor, Terry and Becky Burres, and Debbi Burres Webber. There are 22 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-grandchildren.

Son Joseph Burres died earlier.

A private memorial service for family will be held later. Private burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens. DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel is handling arrangements.

Mabel H. Korn
April 13, 1916 - August 18, 2007

Mabel H. Korn, age 91, of Waldport, died Saturday. She was born to August and Matilda (Klinke) Korn in Epworth, North Dakota.

Mabel grew up in Malta, Montana and attended a country boarding school. She met her husband in Wisconsin, and they were married August 7, 1938 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. They moved to Sweet Home in 1949, where she lived until 1996, when she moved to Waldport to be with family.

Mabel loved to work on crafts and go to flea markets. She was a quiet, happy, sweet person and very giving. Mabel was also a member of Harley Davidson Rhinelander Cycle Club and enjoyed cross country bike rides in her youth.

Mabel is survived by son, Dean, and his wife, Janice, of Waldport; brother, Harold, and his wife, Ethel Schomoeckel, of Malta, Montana; a sister, Verna Hillier, of Bolder, Montana; grandchildren, Michelina of Salem, Gregory of Sweet Home, and Daniel of Waldport; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Korn, and sister, Myrtle Horan.

Private family services are scheduled. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Ethel M. Lott
Feb. 15, 1909 - April 7, 1999

LEBANON - Ethel M. Lott, 90, of Lebanon died Wednesday at the Mennonite Home in Albany.

She was born and grew up in Wray, Colo., the daughter of Ross and Clara (Hadlock) Gross. She married Frank H. Lott April 25, 1928, in Wray, and they moved to Lebanon in 1933. Mr. Lott died in December 1973.

Mrs. Lott was a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She belonged to the Jefferson United Church of God.

Surviving are daughters Phyllis Johnson and Lois Baughman, both of Lebanon; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, a brother and a grandson died earlier.

At Mrs. Lott's request, a private, family service will be held. She will be buried at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Elmer G. Henderson
Feb. 25, 1911 - April 6, 1999

JEFFERSON - Former Jefferson resident Elmer G. Henderson, 88, of Green Valley, Ariz., died Tuesday.

Mr. Henderson was born in Athens, Tenn., to John and Artie Belle (Hampton) Henderson. He grew up in Jefferson.

He married Gertrude Cox in 1937, and she died 49 years later on Nov. 23, 1986.

Mr. Henderson had lived in Washington for 25 years and in California for 30 years. He and Gertrude owned and operated an A&W Restaurant in Yuba City, Calif. He moved to Arizona six years ago.

A lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, he enjoyed ballroom dancing and was an avid bowler who had won many trophies.

Surviving are longtime companion Clarice Faunce of Green Valley, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Brothers Roy and Carl died earlier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Fisher Funeral Home. Mr. Henderson's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with private burial to be at Willamette Memorial Park. Dale Lawson will officiate.

Marilyn E. Barnett
June 23, 1934 - April 4, 1999

SWEET HOME - Marilyn E. Kasicki Barnett, 64, of Sweet Home, died Sunday at home.

She was born in Montgomery County, Texas, to Ralph and Trudy (Acerman) Lane. She lived in Texas for many years.

She married Charles Kasicki and they went where his military career took them. Mr. Kasicki died in July 1994, and she moved to Sweet Home in 1997 to be near friends.

She had worked as a registered nurse in a California state hospital and had been a security guard. A breeder of poodles and Pekingese dogs, she was very fond of animals.

She enjoyed traveling, bowling with a women's league and playing pinochle. She belonged St. Helen's Catholic Church in Sweet Home. While her husband served in the military, she belonged to the NCO Wives.

Surviving are sons Charles Kasicki Jr. of Port Angeles, Wash., and Ronald Kasicki of Houston, Texas; special friend Bob Athey of Sweet home; and grandchildren Tammiekay, Brian and Christopher.

Brothers Bobby and Ralph and sister Shirley Penry died earlier.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Sweet Home Elks Lodge.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Sweet Home Gleaners, in care of Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel.

Cora Edna Dundon
June 7, 1915 - April 6, 1999

SWEET HOME - Cora Edna Dundon, 83, of Sweet Home died Tuesday at Twin Oaks Care Center.

Born in Cascadia, she was the daughter of William Henry and Daisy (Combest) Buchanan. She lived most of her life in the Cascadia area, with short stays in Lacomb and Junction City.

She married Rexford Lee Dundon Oct. 3, 1936, in Albany. He died Jan. 29, 1994.

Mrs. Dundon took an active part in her children's education and belonged to the Parent-Teacher Association and served on the school board. She also was a volunteer worker for 4-H and the Red Cross home nursing program.

During World War II she was a plane spotter with a civilian air watch program connected to the Army Air Corps. She belonged to the United Church of God in Eugene, especially enjoyed her family and liked gardening, reading and being outdoors.

Surviving are sons Donald of Cascadia and Terry of Sweet Home; daughter Linda Stiver of Eugene; sister Myrtle Hufford of Foster and five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Son Eugene died earlier.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Gilliland cemetery, with Randy Stiver of the United Church of God officiating. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

John R. “Bob” Brady
January 11, 1932 - July 4, 2007

John R. “Bob” Brady, 75, of Sweet Home, passed away on Wednesday. He was born in Twin Falls, Idaho to Joel and Faye (Sterling) Brady.

Bob served in the U.S. Army. He lived in Twin Falls and Mountain Home, Idaho, and resided in Sweet Home since 1963. He worked at Willamette Industries in the plywood division from 1963 to 1988, when the mill closed.

Bob liked model trains, cows, gardening, and meeting the guys at McDonalds in the mornings for tea and, sometimes, breakfast.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Brady, of Sweet Home; daughter, Teresa Brady of Huntley, Montana; sons, Timothy Brady of Ballantine, Montana and Robby Brady of Joplin, Missouri; stepson, Rob Poland of Fountain, Colorado; stepdaughter, Lynette Monroe of Alabama; sisters, Barbara Brown of Boise, Idaho, Kathy Kellog of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Jean Gahn of Crooked River Ranch, Oregon; brothers, Joel Brady of Twin Falls, Idaho and Richard Brady of Filer, Idaho; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

No services are planned. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Edith Loraine James
March 28, 1937 - March 9, 1999

LEBANON - Former Lebanon resident Edith Loraine "Bunny" (Campbell) James, 61, of Spokane, died March 9.

She was born in Denver, Colo., to Lorenzo and Mildred Campbell. She grew up in Homer, Alaska, and moved to Seattle at age 18.

She married Gary James and they had two children, Cheri and Mark. They had divorced.

She and companion Kelly Wade had a daughter, Michelle.

Mrs. James was chief switchboard operator for the Port of Seattle for 12 years, and in 1984 moved back to Homer, where she took care of her parents. She moved to Lebanon in 1991 to help care for granddaughter Brittany Wade, who had cancer.

She moved to Spokane in 1997, but returned to Lebanon for a short visit in February.

Mrs. James was especially fond of her grandchildren and, when her health was bad, called them "her reason for going on." She was diabetic and had suffered an incident of cardiac arrest last year.

Surviving are daughters Cheri James of Chicago, Ill., and Michelle Wade of Lebanon; son Mark James of Sacramento, Calif.; sister Margaret of Spokane; and brother Bobby Campbell of Richland, Wash. There are four grandchildren.

A graveside service was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane.

Alice Lee Menarey
Aug. 31, 1903 - April 5, 1999

SWEET HOME - Alice Lee Jackson Menarey, 95, of Sweet Home died Monday at the Lebanon Community Hospital.

Born in DeCalb, Texas, she was the daughter of John and Mollie (Mayberry) Shuffield. She lived in southeastern Oklahoma until 1947, when she moved to Sweet Home.

Mrs. Menarey belonged to the Church of Christ Non-Instrumental in Sweet Home, and enjoyed fishing and quilting.

Surviving are daughters Autie Sterling of Louisville, Ky., Bendet Graham of Eagleton, Okla., Benard Johnson of Springfield and Francine Rieder of Tigard; son George Jackson Jr. of Sweet Home; sister Nomal Frizzel of Dayton, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 36 great-great-grandchildren.

Several relatives died earlier, including first husband George Jackson Sr. in 1967; second husband Jack Menarey in 1980; daughter Oma Smith; sisters Annamae Willis, Agnes Ford and Bertha Jackson; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Menarey's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel, with Dennis Ross officiating. Burial will be Gilliland cemetery.

Ramona K. Williams
April 23, 1948 - April 6, 1999

Ramona Kay Williams, 50, of Albany, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.

She as born and grew up in Myrtle Creek, the daughter of James and Elsie (Schooley) McCoy. She graduated from high school and worked for the First National Bank in Roseburg. She moved to Albany in 1973, working for US National Bank, and to Redding, Calif., in 1979, working for Citizen's Utility Co. of California.

In 1992 she returned to Albany. She married Ray Williams June 1, 1993, at Mountain Gate Community Church in Redding, Calif.

Recently she was a customer service representative at US Bank in Albany.

Mrs. Williams belonged to Mountain Gate Community Church in Redding and attended the First Christian Church in Albany.

She liked crafts and especially enjoyed walking in North Albany with her husband and three dogs.

Surviving are husband Ray; stepdaughter Teresa Nix of Albany; mother Elsie McCoy of Redding; brothers Bill McCoy of Salem and James McCoy of Redding; and step-grandchildren Riley and Kirby Nix.

Her father, James McCoy, died earlier.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Willamette Memorial Park, with Pastor Cindy Lindner officiating.
