Everett O. North
May 14, 1922 — May 5, 1999

Former Albany resident Everett O. North, 76, of Oregon City died Wednesday.

Mr. North was born in Quanah, Texas, and had served in the Navy during World War II.

He married Jean Evans in 1941 in Oklahoma, and they lived in Albany and in Wenatchee and Yakima in Washington before moving to Oregon City.

Mr. North, a minister, was pastor of a Wenatchee congregation for five years. He lived and worked in Albany for more than 20 years. In Yakima he owned the Wright Donut Shop before retiring in 1986.

He belonged to the Southern Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife Jean; son Leon of Manteca, Calif.; daughter Jeannie Goyne of Portland; sisters Vera Johnson and Verna McDonald, both of Portales, N.M., and Leta Finch of St. Helens; and seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Son Dale, brothers J.B., Clifton, Herbert and Eugene and sister Olla Birdsong died before Mr. North.

His funeral was held at the Oregon City Baptist Church. Burial was at Willamette National cemetery in Portland. Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Contributions in Mr. North’s memory may be made to the Northwest Baptist Foundation in Vancouver, Wash.

Catherine E. Haight

Catherine E. Haight, 72, of Albany died March 29, 1999. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2515 Queen Ave. S.E.

Jack M. Martin
Jan. 30, 1918 — May 11, 1999

CORVALLIS — Jack M. Martin, 81, of Corvallis died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was born in Lee County, Va., and grew up in Johnson City, Tenn. He was the son of Walter and Lucille (Carter) Martin. He graduated from Science Hill High School in Tennessee.

Mr. Martin served in an Army National Guard artillery regiment that was activated during World War II. He was stationed at Camp Adair, where he met Lorraine Metzler. They were married Oct. 12, 1944, in Corvallis, and lived Cincinnati, Ohio, before the war ended.

He was discharged as a master sergeant, and they settled in Corvallis, where he built their first house.

Mr. Martin studied civil engineering at Oregon State University and was a general contractor. He worked for the Oregon State Highway Division, retiring in 1985. He laid the groundwork for the development of Stoneybrook Retirement Village.

He belonged to the Corvallis First Presbyterian Church, the Oregon Pilots Association and the Corvallis Lions Club.

Mr. Martin was chairman of the major maintenance committee for the Embarcadero in Newport. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to Eugene and to American historical military sites.

Surviving are wife Lorraine; daughters Marilyn Ervin of Littleton, Colo.; and sisters Carolyn Martin of Johnson City, Tenn., and Sarah Walrath of North Carolina.

Son James Walter Martin died in March 1989 and sister Phyllis Strawn died before Mr. Martin did.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church. A private inurnment will be at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Gerda Marie Ritter
November 3, 1919 - May 20, 2007

Gerda Marie Ritter, 87, of Sweet Home died Sunday. She was born to Christ and Anine Nielsen in Tved, Denmark.

Gerda moved to Sweet Home in 1967 from The Dalles. Prior to that she had resided in Bridgeport, Washington; Bonneville and Westport. She grew up on Puget Island after immigrating to the US from Denmark. During WWII Gerda moved with her husband to several naval stations on the East Coast and the Great Lakes.

Gerda enjoyed needlework, sewing and gardening.

She is survived by her spouse, George R. Ritter, of Sweet Home; daughter, Susan M. Henriksson and husband Roger of Albany, NY; brothers, Robert and Eugene Nielsen of Poulsbo and Longview, WA; and sisters, Neta Sala and Mona Jenson of Portland and Clatskanie.

Gerda was preceded in death by brothers, Paul Nielson, Nels Nielsen, Gunnar Nielsen, Harry Nielsen, and Melvin Nielsen; and sisters, Marna Hovvie, Anna Dunmire, and Elsie Elssasser.

No services are scheduled at this time. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

John Jack Victor
July 1, 1930 - July 17, 2007

"Uncle" John Jack Victor, age 77, a long-time resident of Livingston, California, and more recently a resident of Sweet Home, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2007. He was born to Manuel and Mary Marie (Silva) Victor in Atwater, California.

John enjoyed a full life with his family. He worked on his own dairy farm and raised sweet potatoes and almonds in the Livingston area. He retired to the town of Sweet Home, which he came to love and think of as home in his last years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Wanda J. Victor, and by four loving children: Betty Etchison, George Victor, Patsy Maurer, and Tommy Victor; 18 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, more adopted children, grandchildren, and more friends than could possibly be mentioned. He will be truly missed.

A viewing will be held from 10:00 am to noon Saturday, July 21, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 pm. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements. A second memorial service will be held in California at a date and time to be announced later.

Wesley E. Bedient
Sept. 8, 1915 — May 13, 1999

SWEET HOME — Wesley Elsmer Bedient, 83, of Sweet Home died Thursday.

He was born in Cheney, Wash., the son of Milton Clarence and Agnes Nevin (Clark) Bedient. He grew up in Valley Ford, Wash., and graduated from Linbergh High School in 1933.

He moved to Oregon in 1936 and lived in McMinnville before moving to the Wiley Creek area near Sweet Home in 1940. He served in the Army during World War II, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

While serving in England he met Elizabeth “Bettie” Herriott, and they were married April 27, 1945, in her home town of Glasgow, Scotland.

They lived in the Sweet Home area after the war. Bettie died Sept. 13, 1995.

Mr. Bedient had logged the Baker Creek area with his two brothers, and he was a rancher and logger in the Sweet Home area. He had operated the Penfolds gas station and the Flying A gas station.

He became custodian at Sweet Home High School in 1956 and retired in 1978.

Mr. Bedient belonged to the Sweet Home Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and elder. A past-president of the Lions Club, he was named Lion of the Year for 1982.

He was active in the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1983. He had served on the City Parks Board.

Mr. Bedient liked gardening and bowling in the senior league at Sweet Home Lanes.

Surviving are son Jim of Cooper City, Fla.; daughters Alice Severns and Irene Allen, both of Sweet Home; grandchildren Brian and Shawn Severns, Michael and Alex Bedient and Andrew and Benjamin Allen; and great-grandchildren Kayla, Jered and Brady Severns.

Mr. Bedient’s funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sweet Home Church of Christ, with Pastor Jeff Gallup officiating. Workman & Steckly Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Sweet Home Church of Christ.

Sylvia Butler
Nov. 14, 1935 — May 12, 1999

SWEET HOME — Sylvia Ann Butler, 63, of Sweet Home died Wednesday at Lebanon Community Hospital.

Mrs. Butler was born in Pleasant Hill, Okla. to Jim and Geneva Hilderth Young. She moved to Sweet Home in 1963.

She married Clifford Butler in 1984 in Sweet Home. Mrs. Butler worked for Willamette Industries for 12 years and was a member of the Baptist Church. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, camping, gardening, cooking, family, friends and her grandchildren. She spent many hours making beautiful handmade quilts.

Mrs. Butler is survived by her husband; children Brenda Landtroop of Sweet Home, Deborah Hayes of Hermiston, Patricia Epperson of Hermiston, Peggy Brown of Hermiston and Troy Laney of Peterbough, N.H.; mother Geneva Young of Haworth, Okla.; brothers Robert Young of Haworth and William Young of Eagletown, Okla.; sisters Gerldine Brown of Bolger, Texas, Betty Harrison of Haworth and Climmie Baxter of Haworth; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A brother, James Young, died earlier.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to the Lou Gerig’s Disease Foundation in care of the funeral home, 1443 Long St., Sweet Home, Ore., 97386.

Alfred E. Carroll
Feb. 2, 1931 — May 8, 1999

Former Albany resident Alfred E. Carroll, 68, of Pontiac, Mich., died May 8.

He was born in Mission, S.D., the son of Michael and Mary (Niece) Carroll. He lived in Albany for several years, moving to Michigan in the early 1970s.

Surviving are sons Timothy and Michael Carroll of Albany and daughter Debbie of Albany.

Burial will be Monday in Pontiac, Mich.

Ralph E. Sullivan
May 22, 1910 — May 13, 1999

HOLLEY — Former Holley resident Ralph E. Sullivan, 88, of Cottage Grove died Thursday.

Mr. Sullivan was born in Brainerd, Kan., to Lee and Erna Sullivan, and grew up Mooreland, Okla. He married Mabel C. Harris March 18, 1933, in Mooreland. They moved to Holley in 1946 and to Cottage Grove in 1979.

Mr. Sullivan was a custodian for the Sweet Home School District for many years. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, music, gardening, his church and his family, and was fond of visiting the Oregon coast.

He was a member and past elder of the Cottage Grove Church of Christ at Sixth and Gibbs streets.

Surviving are wife Mabel; sons Leo of Portland and Robert of Sweet Home; daughter Kathy Cochell of Cottage Grove; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at his church in Cottage Grove. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Crawfordsville Union cemetery in Crawfordsville. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Contributions in Mr. Sullivan’s name may be made to the Sixth & Gibbs Church of Christ Youth Fund in Cottage Grove.

Cecil C. Ira
April 25, 1941 — May 12, 1999

Cecil C. Ira, 58, of Albany died Wednesday.

Mr. Ira was born in Dodge City, Kan., to Leo and Thelma (Bricker) Ira. He grew up in Portland and graduated from Franklin High School in 1959 as an all-city and all-state baseball player.

In 1963 he graduated from Oregon State University, where he pitched for the baseball team. The 5-foot-8 left-hander earned All-America honors in 1962 and 1963.

His three-year ERA of 1.79 is still an OSU record, and he holds Pac-10 records for shutouts in a season (five) and in a career (10). He was inducted into the Oregon State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.

Mr. Ira played a total of two years for the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies organizations after college. He taught several years at Philomath High School, where he was head baseball coach. He began teaching mathematics and coaching at Memorial Middle School in 1968, and retired in 1995.

Mr. Ira married Bonnie Graham on June 27, 1962, in Vancouver, and she died Nov. 22, 1977.

He married Jeanne Schell on Nov. 8, 1980, in Corvallis.

Mr. Ira belonged to Spring Hill Country Club, the Albany Eagles Lodge, the OSU Beaver Club, the Oldtimers Baseball Association and Beta Theta Pi.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin on the Alsea River. He was an active supporter of OSU athletics. He was a referee and umpire for several years in the 1980s and 1990s.

Surviving are wife Jeanne; daughter Gogi Ira Villanueva of Medford; and grandchildren Nolan and McKenzie Villanueva, also of Medford. Two brothers died earlier.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church, with Pastor John Carpenter officiating.

Harlan D. Shortreed
May 6, 1926 — May 14, 1999

SWEET HOME — Harlan Dale Shortreed of Sweet Home died Friday at home. He was 73.

Born in Geddes, S.D., to Lawrence Dale and Lila Fern Leavens Shortreed, he lived in South Dakota before moving to Terrebonne in 1940. He settled in Sweet Home in 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He worked for the Santiam Lumber retail yard for many years and then owned Harlan’s Building Supply for several years. He also was a bartender and retired after working as a security guard for several lumber mills in Sweet Home.

He belonged to Santiam Fish and Game and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved sports and coached junior state baseball. His other interests included family gatherings; reading, especially Westerns by Louis L’Amour; and gardening.

He married Donna Coulter on July 7, 1948, in Reno, Nev.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; son H. Kim of Pinole, Calif.; daughters Tana Tracewell of Eugene and Wendy Pollock of Sweet Home; sisters Evonne Weaver and Evelyn Robertson, both of Sweet Home; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Daughter Marcy Godell died in 1978.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at the Sweet Home Mennonite Church. The Rev. Randy Freeman will officiate. Vault interment will follow in Gilliland cemetery. Arrangements are by Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel.
