Billy Roy Reed
June 12, 1945 — May 25, 1999

SCIO — Billy Roy Reed, 53, of Scio died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.

Born in Coalinga, Calif., Mr. Reed was a painter for Reed’s Painting Inc. and, until recently, managed the company’s central Oregon branch. He moved to Scio for health reasons.

Mr. Reed especially enjoyed classic cars.

He is survived by mother Addie Shields of Albany; son Michael Reed of Greeley, Colo.; brothers J.D. Reed of Scio, Donald Reed of Texas and J.L. Bailey of Bakersfield, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at J.D. Reed’s home, 41642 Fish Hatchery Drive, Scio.

Lois Louise Wilson
March 7, 1918 — May 25, 1999

LEBANON — Lois Louise Wilson, 81, of Lebanon died Tuesday at Villa Cascade Care Center.

Born in Lawton, Okla., she was the daughter of John Thomas and Mary Jane (Thorn) Morgan.

She married the Rev. Milton Albert Wilson, and they lived in southern California. After her husband’s death on March 28, 1987, Mrs. Wilson moved to Colorado to live with her daughter, Carol Bailie. She moved to Lebanon five years ago.

Surviving are daughters Carol Bailie of Westminster, Colo., and Charlotte Wilson of Lebanon; son Donald Wilson of Mentone, Calif.; brothers Eugene and Mack Morgan; and sisters Novel Cogdill and Vera Frank.

Son Milton, brothers Johnnie and Albert Morgan, and sisters Charity Reno, Juanita Manning, and Mary Lee Frank died earlier.

A family graveside service will be at Rose Hill cemetery in Whittier, Calif. There will be no local services.

Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Michael Daniel Smith
March 2, 1943 — May 19, 1999

Former Albany resident Michael Daniel Smith, 56, of East Hartford, Conn., died May 19.

Born in Portland, he was the son of Paul and Maxcine (Pluemke) Smith. As a child he lived in Kent, Redmond and Albany. He graduated from Albany Union High School in 1961 and had earned the Boy Scout rank of Eagle Scout.

Mr. Smith served eight years in the Navy, including duty aboard the submarine USS Menhaden.

He settled in Connecticut and was a research technician for Pratt-Whitney, which became part of United Technology Corp.

Surviving are his sons Michael C. of East Hartford, and Daniel of Manchester, Conn.; daughter Krystie Purzycki of Manchester, Conn.; mother Maxcine Bekkedahl of Albany; brother Paul of Albany; sister Bonnie Stutzman of Mehama; stepbrother Kenneth Bekkedahl of Aspen, Colo.; and stepsisters Barbara Good of Milton-Freewater and Deanne Zaniker of Wasco.

Sister Margaret died before he did, and his father died in 1968.

A graveside service was held Tuesday at Kent cemetery in Kent, with the Rev. Dennis Kizzaer officiating. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Virginia J. Haworth
Aug. 22, 1917 — May 27, 1999

Virginia Jocelyn Haworth, 81, of Albany died Thursday at Albany Care Center.

Born in Dannebrog, Neb., she was the daughter of Hans Ansgar and Sofia (Enevoldsen) Petersen. She graduated from Dannebrog High School and moved with her family to Dallas in 1936.

She worked in accounting in Salem and from 1942 until 1946 in San Francisco.

She married Edwin K. Haworth on Jan. 13, 1948, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They lived in Lebanon until 1953, when they moved to Albany.

The Haworths operated Midway Tavern in Albany beginning in 1953. Mr. Haworth died May 16, 1977, and Mrs. Haworth retired from the tavern in 1978.

She enjoyed bingo, bowling and playing pool and belonged to the American Legion.

Surviving are sons Ken of Woodburn, Kevin of Albany and Edwin Jr.; daughter Linda Hubbard of Waterloo; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Brother Howard Petersen and an infant brother died earlier.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at Willamette Memorial Park Chapel, with Pastor Mark Peterson officiating. Entombment will be at the Willamette Memorial Mausoleum.

Contributions in Mrs. Haworth’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

M. Marjorie Dziggel

M. Marjorie Dziggel, 80, of Albany died Friday.

She was born in Tina, Mo., and had lived in the Willamette Valley since 1946.

Surviving are son Don Dziggel of Albany, daughter Ruby Carter of Albany, brother Clifford Vaughn of Philomath, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens, 34275 Riverside Drive. Pastor Thornton Gapen will officiate.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of AAsum Funeral Home, 805 Ellsworth S.W., Albany, Ore. 97321

Barbara Ann Brewer
July 3, 1934 - July 20, 2007

Barbara Ann Brewer, age 73, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2007. She was born on July 3, 1934 in Burlington, Iowa to Leslie and Edna (Minard) Edwards.

Barbara worked as a hairdresser, owning her own shops. She retired to Oregon in 2001 to be close to her daughters and grandchildren.

She enjoyed Home decorating, painting, drawing and crotcheting.

Barbara is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Laura and Laird Adkins of Astoria, OR, Robin and Randy Miller of Hasley, Linda and Guy Cuarter of Burns, OR; sons and daughter-in-law James and Angie Brewer of Anchorage, AK: daughter-in-law Mimi Tolva of Homer, AK; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son Michael Tolva, brother Edward Edwards, granddaughter Leanne Hill, and grandson Ray Brewer.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. Final interment will be at Greenwood cemetery in Astoria, OR.

Florence H. Robinett
January 29, 1923 - May 8, 2007

Florence “Helen” Robinett, 84, of Lebanon died Tuesday. She was born to Milton and Vivian (Robinett) Farley in Corvallis.

Through the course of her life she lived in Nevada, Alaska, California, Oregon, and numerous places throughout the northwest. Helen was one of the first women in Oregon with a chauffeur's license. She drove transport for the Morgan Trucking Co. She also worked with her husband in construction and hauled dynamite.

Helen enjoyed caring for her animals and mining.

She is survived by six siblings; long-time friend, Fred Monroe, and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy, and husband, “Big Jim,” and four siblings.

No services are planned at this time. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.

Ebba L. Hamilton
June 28, 1904 — May 24, 1999

SWEET HOME — Ebba L. Hamilton, 94, of Sweet Home died Monday.

She was born in Petea, Sweden, to Albin and Amalia Olafson Sundquist. She came to America with her parents at the age of 3 and was raised in South Dakota. Mrs. Hamilton moved to Portland in 1928 and worked for Meier & Frank until 1935. She moved to Sweet Home in 1939.

She was married to Elwyn M. Hamilton, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hamilton enjoyed doing ceramics and wood carving.

Surviving are her sister, Malin “Sunny” Sundquist of Sweet Home, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel.

Private burial will be in the Gilliland cemetery.

James H. Huffman
July 14, 1922 - July 10, 1999

James Hubert Huffman, 76, of Albany died Saturday. He was born in Quincy, Wash., to James "Hubert" and Katherine (Amend) Huffman.

Mr. Huffman grew up in Ritzville, Wash., where he graduated from high school. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and serving in World War II.

He married Eloise Le Blanc in 1946 in Medford. She died in 1990.

Mr. Huffman ran a dry cleaning business in Ritzville for a year. He moved to Quincy, Wash., where he worked for and later owned a Texaco service station. He started Huffman Oil, owning several gas stations and serving as a distributor and jobber for Phillips 66.

Mr. Huffman semi-retired in 1975, keeping only Huffman's One Stop Mini-Mart. He sold it in 1980.

He married Alice Sell in 1991 in Reno, Nev. They divided their time between Albany and Apache, Ariz., where they spent the winters.

In Quincy, Mr. Huffman served as mayor, city councilman, planning commissioner and Rotary president. He was a member of volunteer fire department, the Chamber of Commerce and the Jaycees.

He also belonged to the Quincy Moose and Elks lodges and the American Legion posts in Quincy and Albany. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, playing cards and dancing.

Surviving are wife Alice; daughter Candace Wellman of Bellingham, Wash.; stepsons Loran Sell of Salem, Russell Sell of Brownsville, Stephen Sell of Silverton and Rodney Sell of Lebanon; brothers Wilmer Kiesz of Burbank, Calif., and Lawrence Kiesz of Ritzville, Wash.; and grandchildren Christine Klunder and Ame and Jim Wellman.

There are 12 step-grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a step-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents and stepfather Gottlieb Kiesz died earlier.

Mr. Huffman's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at AAsum Funeral Home, with Pastor Wally Gustav officiating.

John `Jack' Ochsner
Oct. 15, 1907 - July 9, 1999

John "Jack" Ochsner, 91, of Albany died Friday at Timberview Care Center.

He was born in Odessa, Russia, to Jacob and Elizabeth (Rothman) Ochsner. As an infant he moved with his family to a farm near Parkston, S.D. He was baptized in the James River at age 14 and belonged to Plum Creek Baptist Church in Emery, S.D., where he attended high school.

He married Otilia "Tillie" Fauth April 3, 1932, in Emery. They lived in Emery and Mitchell, S.D., and in 1936 moved to Portland. They moved to Woodburn Senior Estates in 1972 and to Albany in 1986.

Mr. Ochsner farmed before taking a job with the Northwest Bell Telephone Co. in Mitchell, S.D. In Portland, he worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for more than 36 years, retiring in 1972.

He was a member of Harvest Baptist Church, and had belonged to Gideons International since 1953. He was a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America.

Surviving are wife Tillie; daughters Gloria Price of Albany and Joyce Petzold of Renton, Wash.; brothers Jack of Woodburn, Ferd of Dundee and William "Bill" of Lake Oswego; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren a great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Brothers Ed, Herb, Emanuel and Fred and sister Lydia Wahl died earlier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home. Mr. Ochsner's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home, with Pastor T.J. Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial cemetery in Portland.

Contributions in Mr. Ochsner's memory may be made to the Gideons International or to Harvest Baptist Church Building Fund. They may be sent in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Edward E. Shankles
Nov. 28, 1924 - July 10, 1999

LEBANON - Former Lebanon resident Edward E. "Ed" Shankles, 74, of Salem; died Saturday.

He was born in Quinton, Okla., and moved to California at age 7. He entered the Navy at age 17 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He served on the USS Northhampton, and on the USS Lardner after the Northhampton was sunk.

He worked on Mare Island in Vallejo, Calif., as an ordinance technician, and was transferred to the Huntas Point shipyard in southeast California.

He married Sybil Myers April 21, 1945, in Seat Pleasant, Md. After he retired they lived in California until 1988, when they moved from Summerset, Calif., to Lebanon. They moved to Salem this year.

In Lebanon, Mr. Shankles belonged to the Elks Lodge and the American Legion Post. He liked fishing, hunting and tinkering.

Surviving are wife Sybil; sons Daryl of Placerville, Calif., and Dennis of Redding, Calif.; daughter Sandy of Salem; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Son Donald died in September 1985.

Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen Funeral Home, 1350 Commercial St. S.E., Salem. Mr. Shankles' funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor's choice or to the American Cancer Society.
