Mary (Detrick) Chance McClain
Nov. 2, 1918 - June 23, 2004

Mary Mildred Detrick was born Nov. 2, 1918, to Andrew J. and Ida Jane Heaston Detrick in Lenore, Idaho.

She was the youngest of three children.

At an early age, she moved with her family to Newberg, where her father farmed and led a staunch Brethren community.

After completing her formal education, Mary moved to Albany to become a live-in nanny and housekeeper for Dr. Marshall Woodworth and his wife, Janet. Their daughter, Florence, was the first of Mary's beloved children.

On March 26, 1940, Mary and Richard Thurber were married .

Like so many young couples of that era, World War II separated them.

Mary was widowed when the plane Dick piloted was shot down over Formosa and all aboard were lost.

Mary accepted a new nomadic life as wife of a career Army officer upon her marriage Nov. 16, 1946, to Vernon L. Chance.

She and children Judith, Linda and Shirley followed "Bud" to assignments within the states and abroad throughout his career.

He passed on Dec. 25, 1980.

On June 26, 1982, Mary wed James McClain who preceded her in death 18 years after their marriage.

Throughout her life, Mary was known for her deep love and devotion to family and friends, her strong and abiding faith, compassion, and determination and courage to face new horizons.

She was proficient at knitting and crocheting, was a marvelous seamstress and cook, and was a gracious hostess.

Mary had a great appreciation of the arts, and was always willing to unselfishly share her talents and love with others.

While living in Albany, Mary was active in Daughters of the Nile, Ladies of the Oriental Shrine, Grand Prairie Garden Club, 20th Century Book Club, volunteer services at the hospital and Red Cross blood drives, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a member and deacon at Albany United Presbyterian Church and active in Trinity Circle.

Three years ago, Mary moved to Scappoose to be with family.

She is survived by children Judith Chance of Corvallis, Shirley and Robert Arneson of Beaverton, Linda and Charles Gaskill of Scappoose, Florence Patton of Issaquah, Wash., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts may be sent to Shriner's Hospital.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Albany United Presbyterian Church.

A private family committal service and vault burial will be at Willamette Memorial Park cemetery in Albany.

Ardella L. Mull
Sept. 16, 1930 - Nov. 22, 2004

Ardella "Ardie" L. (Vandehey-Rauscher) Mull, 74, of Drain died Monday in Lebanon.

She was born in Forest Grove to Francis and Cecilia (Hermens) Vandehey.

Ardie married Thomas Rauscher in 1948.

He died in June 1992.

Survivors include children Gerald "Dominick" Rauscher, Gene Rauscher, Kathryn Ropiequet, Cheryl Ripoll, Larry Rauscher, Gary Rauscher and Timothy Rauscher; sisters Violet, Barbara, Thelma and Shirley; and fiance Doug Moore.

Two sisters preceded her in death.

Viewing will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sweet Home Evangelical Church followed by a service at 11 a.m.

Final burial will be at Gilliland cemetery. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Harold Richard Wodtli
May 2, 1926 — Oct. 12, 2004

Harold "Hal" Richard Wodtli, 78, of Sweet Home died Tuesday.

He was born in Sweet Home to Wallace and Eunice (Alexander) Wodtli.

He served in the Navy.

He married Ruby Stevenson.

They later divorced.

Hal married Yvonne Simpson in 1957.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; children Steven Wodtli, Dale, Greg and Roger Meacham, Christelle Kilness and Sharon Moore; eight grandchildren, and brothers Allen, Ralph and Wayne Wodtli.

He was preceded in death by brother

s John and Norman Wodtli.

Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gilliland cemetery.

William L. Weber
Oct. 11, 1925 — Nov. 28, 2004

William "Bill" L. Weber, 79, of Sweet Home died Sunday at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

He was born on Pleasant Valley Road in Sweet Home to Frank "Ted" and Reva (Finley) Weber.

He graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1943.

After graduation, he joined the Marines and was sent to Iwo Jima as a machine gunner.

Soon after the atomic bomb was dropped, he went to Japan on military police duty.

He had said of those days he was so homesick, he lay awake at night and remembered the curves in Pleasant Valley Road.

In 1946, Bill returned to Sweet Home and began logging. He had been a resident of Sweet Home ever since.

In 1948, he met Billie Riley. They married on June 9, 1948.

Bill was active in the Sweet Home community for many years until his health declined.

He could be seen helping at all the East Linn Museum special events, keeping the museum lawn mowed throughout the summer and working on maintenance jobs.

Bill was a charter member of the Sweet Home Elks Lodge.

He volunteered many years with the Sweet Home Fire Department.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Fir Lawn Lutheran Church.

Bill is survived by his wife, Billie; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Karin Weber of Hillsboro and Mike and Judy Weber of Hillsboro; five grandchildren, and sisters Betty Lam of Silverton and Janice Cardwell of Bend.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fir Lawn Lutheran Church.

Burial will be at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the East Linn Museum.

Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Mastin Eugene Taylor Jr.
Aug. 5, 1971 — Dec. 25, 2004

Mastin Eugene "Gene" Taylor, 33, died Dec. 25.

He was born in Aberdeen, Wash. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his son, friends and family.

He loved taking his son, Cody, for rides on his scooter and playing games on his Xbox with him.

He loved the mountains, snowboarding, skiing, rock hunting, using his metal detector, riding motorcycles, archery, growing tomatoes and enjoyed his salt-water fish aquarium.

Gene took a lot of swimming classes in the Coast Guard.

He liked to cook, something he learned in the Coast Guard.

He was big-hearted. He found joy in helping others.

Survivors include his son, Cody James Taylor; parents Vada "Joyce" Taylor and Mastin Eugene Taylor Sr.; sister DeeAndra "Dee" Fridlund and her children, Jacob, Trenton, Andrew and Sophie.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lacey, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help defray costs.

Lloyd John Porter
March 8, 1914 - June 19, 2004

Lloyd John Porter, 90, died Saturday in Corvallis.

He was born in Circleville, Kan., to Ross and Bessie (Peace) Porter.

Ross farmed the prairie land owned by his parents, Alexander and Ella (Baker) Porter, who had homesteaded in Kansas in the 1860s after emigrating from Scotland.

Lloyd's family moved to Albany by train in 1919.

They settled on a farm near Jefferson, where Lloyd spent his boyhood years.

After graduating from high school, he worked on the family farm until he married Norma Lent in 1938 and purchased his own farm on Scravel Hill near Jefferson where they raised their family of two sons and four daughters.

Throughout his working life, he managed the farm and was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Linn County.

Following his wife's death in 1972, Lloyd married Betty (Johnson) Attebery on Oct. 13, 1973. Lloyd and Betty had one son.

Later in life, he and his family moved to Summit.

During retirement years he logged, replanted and managed his timberland acreage located near Blodgett.

Lloyd was an active member of Calvary Community Church while he lived near Albany and Blodgett Community Church after he moved to Summit.

Throughout his adult life, he remained active in church leadership and volunteered for Child Evangelism Fellowship Release Time.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Betty Porter of Summit, and their son, Daniel Ross Porter of Dallas. Other surviving children are Donna Jean Mullen of Corvallis, Lance Lloyd Porter of Pensacola, Fla., Patricia Kay Laughlin of Gresham, Nancy Lynn Porter of Gresham, Monte Craig Porter of Portland, Debra Lee Gravitt of Gresham; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his stepchildren, Betty (Attebery) Otto of Jefferson, Peggy (Attebery) Henshaw of Independence, Samuel Attebery of Albany; seven step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by brother Robert Porter and sister Lois (Porter) McCann.

A memorial service will be at noon Tuesday at Calvary Community Church near Cottonwoods.

Private burial will be at Jefferson cemetery. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
