Lela Kellogg Newell
May 22, 1931 - January 23, 2005

Lela “Joyce” Kellogg Newell, 73, of Salem died Jan. 23.
She was born in Newberg, Ore., to Warren and Dorothy Kellogg. She graduated from Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, Ore., and married Clarence Charles (Babe) Newell soon after in 1949.
She worked as a radiologist in the North Bend/Coos Bay area until moving to Stayton in 1964. She worked at Santiam Memorial Hospital and for the state of Oregon until her retirement in 1995.
She spent all but two years of her retirement in assorted assisted living facilities due to rapid deterioration caused from her Parkinson’s disease.
She had a great love for the outdoors. She spent many hours fishing, camping and hunting. She was an avid reader, had an extensive collection of books and always had a book in her hand.
Survivors include her daughter, Faith Comby of Salem; sister, Marion Laube of North Bend; and grandchildren, Shelley McCargar of Portland and James Schomus of Corvallis.
At her request, no services were held. Remembrances: Western Farm Workers Association, 725 S.E. Seventh Ave., Hillsboro, OR 97123. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.

Bernard Gullickson

Bernard Gullickson, 63, of Woodburn died Jan. 25, 2006. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 at Woodburn Senior Estates Golf and Country Club in Woodburn.
Mr. Gullickson was born March 6, 1942 in Macon, Georgia. He lived in Germany where he graduated from high school. Moving back to the states, he graduated from college at Winona State with a bachelors degree in chemistry. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.
He lived in Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Japan, and Minnesota before moving to Tacoma, Wash., where he lived before moving to Woodburn 19 years ago. He had worked as a chemist while living in Tacoma. He retired in 2003.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, computers, water skiing, pool and reading.
He was a member of the Woodburn Senior Estates Golf and Country Club and the Wilsonville Moose Lodge #1598.
Mr. Gullickson is survived by his partner and soul mate, Karen Voiss, of Woodburn; son, Brian Gullickson, of Woodburn; brother, Herbert Gullickson Jr., of Surprise, Ariz.; brother, Gary Gullickson and wife, Kathy, of Bellevue, Wash.; and nieces, Sandra Armstrong, Kathy Gibson, Holly Kassuba, and Kelesy Gullickson.
Cornwell Colonial Chapel of Woodburn is in care of arrangements.

Edith Levacy
May 24, 1917 - January 26, 2005

Edith Levacy, 87, of Aumsville died Jan. 26.
She was born in Hansford County, Texas, to Richard and Laura (Roberts) Murphy. She was raised and educated in Texas.
She married Ewing Levacy on Jan. 1, 1939, in Lemesa, Texas. She and her husband moved to Independence, Ore., in 1942. The family lived in Colton and Salem before moving to Aumsville in 1972.
She was a homemaker. She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing and collecting dolls. She was a member of the Nazarene Church.
She was preceded in death by three children, five brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include her husband; daughters, Carol Fredrickson of Salem, Linda Griffin of Yuma, Ariz., and Vickie Erwin of Salem; son, Kenneth Levacy of Aumsville; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Howell Prairie cemetery, Salem. Remembrances: The Oregon Garden, Silverton. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.

John Bornkamp

John Charles Bornkamp of Aurora died on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the age of 81.

A private family graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland, Ore.

Mr. Bornkamp was born on July 18, 1924 in Portland, Ore. He worked for Pacific Maritime Association as a supervisor/longshoreman. He was a member of ILWU and spent his life in the Portland Metro area.

Mr. Bornkamp was married to Gloria Bornkamp (maiden name Yearwood) in 1960.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Bornkamp; son, Charles Phillip Bornkamp; and daughter, Beth Susan Friesen.

Remembrances in John Bornkamp’s name can be made to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center Heart Institute Foundation, 9205 S.W. Barnes Road, Portland, Oregon 97225.

Helen Tucker

A funeral Mass was held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006 for Helen Frances Tucker of Lake Oswego. Graveside services followed at Sacred Heart cemetery in Lake Oswego. A rosary was held one day earlier, at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Wilsonville.
Mrs. Tucker was born Helen Frances Tirpak on April 1, 1928 in Donald, Wisc. She died of cancer on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 at the age of 77.
Mrs. Tucker spent 50 years as an educator, including 20 of those with the Tigard School District. She moved to the Portland area in 1965 from Eugene. She lived in Lake Oswego for the last 40 years. Her hobbies included children, church activities, music and pets.
Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Ticker, in 1997.
She is survived by daughters Patricia Tucker-McCoy of Tigard and Catherine Cummings of Tualatin, and by three grandchildren.
Remembrances may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Cornwell Colonial Chapel of Wilsonville was in care of arrangements.

Minnie Warkentin

Funeral services were held Jan. 30, 2006 at Brusie Funeral Home in Chico, Calif., for Minnie Esther Warkentin, 94, of Wilsonville.
Internment followed at Glen Oaks Memorial cemetery in Chico. Mrs. Warkentin was born Minnie Esther Penner on October 20, 1911 in Lehigh, Kan. She died on Jan. 25, 2006.
She married Leonard Warkentin in 1932. She was a cook for Chico State University. She enjoyed reading, gardening and sewing. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chico.
She lived in Chico for more than 78 years. She moved to Wilsonville in 2002 to be near her daughter.
Mrs. Warkentin was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 1969. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Maridel and Vern Wise, of Wilsonville; her son, ElJay Warkentin of Torrance, Calif.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by Cornwell Colonial Chapel of Wilsonville and Brusie Funeral Home of Chico.

Raymond A. Harris
March 6, 1918 - December 24, 2004

Raymond A. Harris, 86, of Stayton died Dec. 24.
He was born in Fresno, Calif. He moved to Yamhill in 1962 from Santa Clara and later lived in Aloha and settled in Stayton in 1976. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy. He worked making cabinets all his life.
He was a member of the Masons and an RV association. He was also a snowbird for many years, staying in Apache Junction, Ariz. He enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and pinochle, playing pool and golfing. He also enjoyed watching football and baseball, especially spring training baseball.
His wife, Rita Baker-Volpa, whom he married on April 12, 2001, preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 2002.
Survivors include his stepsons, Dennis Volpa of Stayton and Bruce Volpa of Aptos, Calif.; stepdaughter, Marcia Gervin of Issaquah, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.

Kathaleen Pettijohn

Kathaleen Pettijohn, 84, died at a Wilsonville care center. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Forest Lawn cemetery, Cypress, Calif.
Mrs Pettijohn was born Sept. 8, 1920 in Corydon, Iowa. She lived in Sheridian, Iowa until 1939 at which time she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, then moved to Lakewood, California in 1954. She has lived in Wilsonville by her son, Larry, since 2002.
She married Charles Pettijohn in 1939. He died in 1984.
Surviving family members include her 2 sons, Charles Richard Pettijohn of Temeuula, Calif., and Larry Dean Pettijohn of La Palma, Calif.; her sister, Bernadine Johnson of Waukee, Iowa; 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death be her son, Donald Lee Pettijohn in 1999; her twin sister, Lorene Johnson in 1998 and her brother Erwin Dorsey in 1936.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Wilsonville Hampton Care Facility. Canby Funeral was in care of local arrangements.

Elaine Meaney

Elaine Meaney died November 3, 2003 at the age of 84. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 14, at the Wilsonville Assisted Living Facility, 7600 SW Vlahos Dr. Elaine was born July 9, 1919, in Gaston. She married Roderick F. Meaney, in 1940, who preceded her in death in 1985.
She worked as a dry cleaner operator at Tik Tok Cleaners in Lake Oswego. She resided in Milwaukie for over 40 years and moved to Wilsonville in May of 2003.
She is survived by daughter Arline Bunny Hodges of Tualatin; granddaughters Debby Arndorfer of Tualatin and Diane Mount of Sisters; and four great-grandchildren.
Remembrances can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon.
Cornwell Colonial Chapel of Wilsonville is in care of the arrangements.

Charlie Michael Fery
March 26, 1912 - January 9, 2005

Charlie Michael Fery, 92, of Stayton died Jan. 9 in San Jose, Calif.
He was born in Stayton, the oldest of eight children, to Frank and Minnie Fery. He graduated from Stayton High School. He married Catherine Ferschweiler on Nov. 8, 1939. They began their life together on the farm where he lived until his death. He was one of the last farmers in the area to farm with horses.
He retired in 1977 and enjoyed taking several bus trips across the country, including Reno, Nevada. He enjoyed making apple cider and grape juice, and spent many hours caring for his garden that included berries, grapes and apples. He took great pride in his many dahlias and gladiolus.
Together, he and his wife made many trips to California to visit their three grandchildren and spend the Christmas holiday. When driving wasn’t possible, they enjoyed the scenic ride on the train.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stayton and the Catholic Order of Foresters.
He was preceded in death by his wife; brothers, Harvey and Elmer; and sister, Sister Kathleen SSMV.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Mary of Stayton, John and Elizabeth of Salem and Orville and Elsie of San Jose; sisters, Della, Mary Ellen and Elaine; brother, Norman; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two adopted great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Stayton. Interment was at St. Mary cemetery, Stayton. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
