Vickie Polston

Vickie Lynn Polston, 46, of Salem died May 15, 1999.
She was born in Newberg on Nov. 15, 1952. She married Michel Ivan Polston on Sept. 21, 1987. She had been a resident of Salem since 1993, when she moved from Newport.
She was employed at Northgate Bowl. She enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing and working with the public.
Survivors include her husband, Michel, of Salem; daughters Patricia Polston of Seattle and Michelle Polston of Salem; sons Don Polston and Thomas Polston, both of Salem; her father, Robert V. Parsons of Newport; brothers Robert C. Parsons of Portland and David Parsons of Reno, Nev.; a sister, JoAnn Vanassche of Seattle, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation is today (Wednesday) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Home, Salem. Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Surfwood Villa Club House in Salem. Contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, Marion County Unit, 161 High St. SE, Suite 208-C, Salem 97301.

William Gordon

William Charles Gordon, 75, of Logsden died at his home on May 19, 1999.
He was born in Waco, Texas on May 3, 1974 to Charles and Edith Meadows Gordon.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Logsden Neighborhood Church in Logsden. Private burial took place at Toledo Cemetery in Toledo. Bateman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Vernon Strausbaugh

Vernon Frank Strausbaugh, 76, of Gleneden Beach, died at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center on May 20, 1999.
He was born in Salem on April 18, 1923 to Frank and Hallie Doty Strausbaugh. He had been a resident of Gleneden Beach since 1974.
For 14 years, he was employed by Oregon Parks and Recreation as a park aide. He was a World War II Army veteran, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
He is survived by his sister, Elaine Herrod of Sparks, Nev.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Belcrest Cemetery in Salem. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Calvin Lewis

He was born in Mount Horeb, Wis. on Dec. 10, 1918 to Russell F. and Gertrude Leffler Lewis. The family moved to Reedsburg, Wis. in 1921, and in 1928 to Marshfield, Wis., where Mr. Lewis graduated from high school in 1936. At that time, he was known as Pat Lewis.
He attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated from law school there in 1942. He married BettyRae Schroeder of Shawano, Wis. in September 1942 and entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. He entered officer training school and served in several stations in the United States during World War II. After discharge from the service, he returned to the University of Wisconsin to become a certified public accountant.
After graduation, he was employed by the Albert Hill Accounting firm in Marshfield until called back into service in the Korean conflict. He served in Japan during that time. After discharge, he moved to Tucson, Ariz., where he began a 32-year career with the Hughes Aircraft Corporation in its purchasing division. He and his wife moved to Thousand Oaks, Calif. in 1965. He retired in 1983 and moved to Newport in 1996.
Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Patricia R. Lewis of South Beach; and a brother, Dr. Russell F. Lewis Jr., of Madison, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife; sons Calvin G. Jr. and Ernest R.; a daughter, Susan L.; and a brother, Dr. Steven R. Lewis.
An informal memorial gathering will be held at his daughter’s home in South Beach at 7 p.m. Thursday. Following cremation, his remains will be buried with those of his wife in Shawano, Wis. in a service on June 26. The family suggests remembrances to the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison or the St. Labre Indian School of Ashland, Mont. Arrangements are by Bateman Funeral Home.

Edward Burch

He was born in McMinnville on Feb. 18, 1936 to Edward and Dorothy Burch. He graduated from Toledo High School and attended Oregon State University, Corvallis. He married Loretta Gilson in Toledo on April 14, 1957.
Mr. Burch moved to Woodburn from Newport in 1966. He was formerly the manager of a Woodburn grocery store and had worked for several grocery chains in the area.
He enjoyed old cars and collecting antiques, and was an avid football, baseball and Portland Trail Blazers fan. He was a member of the Woodburn First Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta, of Woodburn; sons Ronald Burch and Brad Burch of Woodburn and Brian Burch of Anacortes, Wash.; a daughter, Melanie Karp of Wilsonville; a sister, Ellen Burch of Lompoc, Calif.; his parents, Edward and Dorothy Burch of Woodburn; and seven grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn. Private interment was at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.

Elosha White

She was born in Elizabeth, W.Va. on Feb. 15, 1911 to James William and Dora Cottrill Eaton. She had been a resident of California until moving to Waldport in 1992.
She married Russell White in Reno, Nev. on July 1, 1950; he preceded her in death in 1990. For 40 years, she worked as a nursing assistant in California before retiring in 1973.
Disposition is by cremation, with inurnment in Chapel of the Chimes Mausoleum in Hayward, Calif. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Dariel Ferrell

She was born in Portland on Sept. 5, 1922 to Archibald and Matura Purdy Hunt. She was a resident of Portland until moving to Waldport two years ago.
Her husband, Will Ferrell, preceded her in death in 1986. For most of her life, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughters, Glenda Golobay of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Brittany Ferrell and Bethany Ferrell, both of Waldport; a son, Darrell Ferrell of Portland; a brother, Archibald “Buck” Hunt of Portland; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation, with inurnment at Lincoln Memorial in Portland. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Betts

She was born in Redding, Calif. on Dec. 23, 1916 to Floyd and Otis Patterson Scrivner. She had been a resident of South Beach since 1980.
For 25 years, she was employed in the dietary department of Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco.
She is survived by her niece, Bonnie Lowes, of Mercer Island, Wash.
Disposition is by cremation, with inurnment at Eureka Gardens Mausoleum in Newport. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Elde

She was born in Portland on July 15, 1917. She had been a resident of Portland until moving to Reno, Nev., in 1964, and to Newport in 1981. She was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and served in the Coast Guard Spars.
She married Kenneth B. Elde in Portland in 1947; he preceded her in death in 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Jana Krabbe, and her husband, Paul, of Toledo; a son, Kenneth M. Elde of Reno, Nev.; a brother, Floyd O. Smith of Tillamook; grandchildren Signe and Delpha Krabbe; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Hermann; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Portland Friday at 11 a.m. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
