Nina Sorenson
July 22, 1918 - October 31, 2004

Nina Sorensen, 86, of Silverton died Oct. 31, 2004, at the Marquis Silver Gardens Care Center in Silverton.
She was born July 22, 1918, in Magnolia, Iowa, to Irene and Jim Chambers. After high school graduation, she married Carroll Barsby. Later, her oldest son Michael was born and the family moved to Oregon, where Peggy, Steve and Dave were born. She lived in Junction City, Portland and later in Eugene as her children finished high school.
Her first marriage ended in 1955. In 1958, she married Jack Sorensen. That marriage later ended and she moved to Salem before settling in Silverton.
She developed bi-polar disorder in the early 1950s, a disease that she struggled to conquer the remainder of her life. Even with that always lurking, she worked in a range of jobs. She obtained her real estate brokers’ and insurance licenses in Junction City. While in Silverton, she taught English as a Second Language at Chemeketa Community College and volunteered at the Silverton Art Association. She befriended innumerable people with whom she came in contact and her home in Silverton was a haven for stray cats needing love.
She was preceded in death by a son, David.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Rose of Wichita, Kan., and Steve and Helen of Cary, N.C.; daughter, Peggy of Olympia, Wash.; adopted son, John Jacob; brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Noni of St. George, Utah; brother, Duane of Springfield, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the Silverton Art Association. Remembrances may be made to the Silverton Art Association for young artist scholarships. Unger Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey James Greggs
January 6, 2004 - December 13, 2004

Jeffrey James Greggs, of Silverton, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004.
Jeffrey was born to Jeffrey and Kimberly (Vega) Greggs on January 6, 2004, in Silverton. He liked his grandpa’s cap and playing outside, swinging, bouncing and playing with his brother and sisters. He loved to sing and was beginning to take his first steps.
Survivors included his parents Jeffrey and Kimberely Greggs; brother Adam Vega; sisters Daniella Quintero, Lilia Quintero and Cassandra Greggs; grandparents Sandy and Allen Ritchie and Karen Jean and Jay Vega, all of Silverton; great-grandmothers Fay Hooper of Silverton and Geri Lowell of Mount Angel; and many aunts and uncles.
A visitation was held Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Crossroads Christian Fellowship in Keizer. Interment followed the service at Bethany Pioneer cemetery in Silverton.
Contributions can be made to Doernbecher’s or the Baby James Memorial Fund at any West Coast Bank.

Wilbert Homann
May 13, 1916 - February 26, 2005

Wilbert Homann, 88, of Monitor, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005.
Wilbert was born May 13, 1916, in Monitor to Fred and Bertha Homann. He attended school in Monitor and graduated from Woodburn High School. Following graduation, L.D. Lenon hired Wilbert to work for his implement business, where he was employed for 63 years.
Farming and restoring John Deere tractors were continuing interests of Wilbert’s. He was considered a knowledgeable source of information about John Deere machinery. Wilbert played an important role in forming the Monitor Rural Fire District. He served the department for more than 50 years, 20 of those as fire chief. Following his years as chief, he was elected to the board of directors. He retired from the fire service in 1987. In 2002, the Oregon Fire Chiefs’ Association honored Wilbert with a statewide public service award for his many years of service to his community.
Wilbert was married to Helen (Schlottmann) Homann. They lived and raised a family on the family farm in Monitor. He was a loving husband and father and took great joy in sharing time with his family and friends. Wilbert was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church near Mount Angel.
Wilbert is survived by Helen, his wife of 67 years; his daughters Carole Almquist of Salem and Donna Strom of Mesa, Ariz.; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Brian and Kori Almquist of Sherwood; granddaughter Brenda Almquist of Denver, Colo.; great-granddaughters Lindsay and Madalyn Almquist; sister Lucinda Bridgehouse; nephew Fred Bridgehouse; and many cherished friends.
Wilbert was preceded in death by his sons-in-law David Almquist and Doug Strom.
Following a private committal, a memorial service will be held in Trinity Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 3. The family requests that memorials be given to a charity of choice in lieu of flowers.

Alice M. Lund
October 27, 1919 - February 20, 2005

Alice M. Toney Lund, 85, of Vancouver, Wash., died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005.
Alice was born Oct. 27, 1919, in Haines. She lived in Silverton since 1933 and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She and her husband, Leo, owned and operated Toney’s Restaurant in Silverton from 1950 until retiring in 1973. Leo preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1992.
Alice enjoyed people, cooking, biking and decorating for holidays and birthdays. She enjoyed many years of service in the Lutheran Women’s League. Her greatest joy was her 45-year marriage to Leo
Alice died in Vancouver, Wash., after being in Memory Care for nearly four years.
Survivors include sister Helen T. Murawski of Vancouver, Wash.; sister-in-law Lucile Lund of Silverton; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton. Interment followed at Valley View cemetery in Silverton.
Contributions may be made to Silverton Hospital.

Teresa Katherine Wagner
July 1, 1909 - December 17, 2004

Teresa Katherine Wagner, 95, of Mount Angel died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004.
Teresa was born July 1, 1909, in McMurry, Wash., on the family homestead to Frank and Anna (Kappel) Pinsker. The family moved to the Mount Angel area in 1914 and a year later settled on a 10-acre farm located between Woodburn and Mount Angel. She attended schools in McKee and Mount Angel until the 10th grade. She worked in the Portland area in the mail order department at Montgomery Ward and assisted in cooking for a wealthy family. She eventually moved to Raymond, Wash., and worked as a waitress.
She met Joseph Wagner there and two years later they were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mount Angel on May 14, 1929. They honeymooned in Montana and returned to Washington where Teresa continued working as a waitress to help through the Depression years. They later purchased a little café in Kalama, Wash., which they ran for eight years. They returned to the family farm in Oregon in 1942. They raised berries, cherries and cucumbers and also had chickens, pigs and cows.
In 1999, Teresa and Joe moved to Orchard House. Joe preceded her in death in 2001. Teresa was an excellent homemaker and devoted to her husband, family and church. She had been an active member of the Catholic Daughters and St. Ann’s Society. She enjoyed working in her garden.
Teresa is survived by daughter Donna E. Geelan of Yamhill; sons Joseph C. Wagner Jr. of Mapleton, David F. Wagner of Woodburn and Michael A. Wagner of Tigard; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Rosary, today at 7 p.m. and Mass, Thursday, Dec. 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mount Angel. Interment will follow the Mass at Calvary cemetery in Mount Angel.
Contributions can be made to Providence Benedictine Nursing Center or St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Irene Edith Ramsay
September 23, 1938 - December 18, 2004

Irene Edith Ramsay, 66, of Silverton died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004.
Irene was born to Leonard and Ruth (Burleson) Lester Sept. 23, 1938, in Olympia, Wash. She moved to Rickreall in 1941 and then to Silverton in 1948. She graduated from Silverton Union High School.
She married Wes Oster in 1956 and they later divorced. She was a homemaker and had been active in the Elks Lodge. She met Jerry Simpson and they had been campanions for the last two years. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, her grandchildren, listening to old record albums, watching old movies, going to casinos, boating with Jerry and taking long walks.
Survivors include daughters Kathy Bettencourt of Condon and Vickie Merrill of Willamina; brother Ray Lester of Portland; companion Jerry Simpson of Silverton; and grandchildren, Aaron, Ashlee, Erika and Sydney.
A celebration of Irene’s life was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at Silvertowne II Community Hall in Silverton.
Contributions can be made to Silverton Hospital or Providence Benedictine Center.

Pauline Savage
August 25, 1927 - June 2, 2004

Pauline “Polly” Savage, 76, of Silverton died June 2, 2004.
She was born Aug. 25, 1927 in Sturgis, Mich. to John and Katherine Sherwood. She has lived in Silverton since 1968 and married Tom Savage in 1973. Before moving to Silverton, she was a member of the Federated Church and AJO, in Arizona. She was a member of Silverton Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, ceramics and Native American art.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John Sherwood.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas of Silverton; daughter Brenda Lieske of Laramie, Wyo.; stepdaughter, Jan Gregonis of Kennewick, Wash.; stepson, John Savage of Milwaukie; brothers, Jerry Sherwood of White Piegeon, Mich., and Wayne Sherwood of Constantine, Mich.; sister, Eva Closson of Goshen, Ind.; and two grandsons.
A service was held June 7 at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were made through Unger Funeral Chapel.

Gertrude Cora Runyan
March 24, 1912 - May 21, 2004

Gertrude “Trudy” Cora Runyan, 92, of Silverton, died May 21, 2004.
She was born March 24, 1912 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Laban and Cora Myer. She graduated from Englewood High School in 1929. She married Merrill Runyan who died in 2003. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Los Angeles School District and also at Sears. She lived in Silverton for the last 25 years and belonged to the First Baptist Church of Salem. She enjoyed needlepoint and gardening.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Coll of Silverton and Bonnie Edmonds of Keizer; son, Jack Runyan of Oak Park, Calif.; brother, Jack Myer of Fallbrook, Calif.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be June 12, 9 - 10:30 a.m., at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton. A graveside service will be June 12, 11 a.m. at Valley View cemetery. Contributions may be made to Union Gospel Mission. Arrangements were made through Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.

Elsie Marie Tulare
December 28, 1926 - June 5, 2004

Elsie Marie (Goodall) Tulare, 77, of Silverton died June 5, 2004.
She was born Dec. 28, 1926 in Redfield, S.D. She was one of nine children. She moved to Silverton as a young child where she met Robert Tulare. They married Aug. 6, 1945. They raised their family in the Silverton Hills area. She was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, sewing, and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1985.
Survivors include her children, Ronald W. Tulare of McKinney, Texas; Vernon Tulare of Bend and Marilyn Gray of Salem; brother, Lester Goodall of Jefferson; three grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Belcrest Memorial cemetery, Salem. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Hospice Association of Bend/LaPine.

Catherine Mary Hofstetter
September 24, 1930 - May 25, 2004

Catherine Mary Hofstetter, 73, of Albany, died May 25, 2004.
She was born in Silverton Sept. 24, 1930, to Christian and Mary (Roth) Hofstetter. She attended Valley View Grade School, Western Mennonite High School near Salem, and graduated from Oregon State University in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in social science, and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.
She was employed at the Mennonite Retirement Home in Albany for more than 40 years serving as food services supervisor, and dietitian and other tasks.
Her parents and a brother, Merlin, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her brothers, Donald of Hood River and Ralph and Harold of Silverton; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hofstetter of Rapid City, S.D. and aunts, uncles and many cousins.
A memorial service will be today, 2:30 p.m. at Barrick Funeral Home, 205 Church St., Salem. Contributions may be made to Faith Bible Church, P.O. Box 712, Albany, OR 97321. A private interment was at Lewis cemetery.
