Alfred W. Harding
July 10, 1919 - June 1, 2004

Alfred “Al” W. Harding, 84, of Silverton died June 1, 2004.
He was born July 10, 1919 in Valier, Mont.
Survivors include his wife, Letha of Silverton; daughters, Phillis Harding of Salem and Peggy Himphill of Salem; sons, Dan Harding of Salem and David Harding of Salem; sister, Alta Harris of Scotts Bluff, Neb.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held June 4 at Unger Funeral Chapel. Interment was at Valley View cemetery. Contributions may be made to Fruitland Community Church or Union Gospel Mission. Arrangements were made through Unger Funeral Chapel.

Hatsue Johnson
March 12, 1935 - February 11, 2004

Hatsue Johnson, 86, of Silverton died Feb. 11, 2004.
She was born March 12, 1935 in Onna-Son, Japan. She grew up in Okinawa. She met and married Waldo Lloyd Johnson in 1965 and moved to the United States in 1967. She worked for the American Legion in San Antonio, Texas as a waitress and retired after 20 years. She moved to Silverton in August 2003 to be near her daughter. She was a gardener, recognized for her beautiful flower gardens, and enjoyed sewing. She attended Walk by Faith Fellowship and the Silverton Praise Center.
Survivors include her daughter, Ruby McBride of Silverton; son, Gary Johnson of Brownsville; eight brothers and a sister, living in Brazil and Japan; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A gravesite service was Feb. 13 at Silverton cemetery.
Arrangements were made through Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.

Billy Eugene Gifford
August 23, 1931 - January 30, 2004

Billy Eugene Gifford, 72, of Anderson, Calif., died Jan. 30, 2004.
He was born Aug. 23, 1931 in Selma, Calif. He attended Colton High School in California; tech school, USAF; University of California, Los Angeles, and electronics tech school. He was a Korean War Veteran and a retired carpenter. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reloading, archery, model building, and collecting Hot Wheels.
His wife Nola Ann Miller, who he married Nov. 7, 1953, preceded him in death Oct. 12, 1996. His brother Jimmy Gifford also preceded him in death.
Survivors include his daughters, Annie Gifford of Salt Lake City, Utah, Helen Gifford or Moreland, Idaho and Patricia Gifford of Provo, Utah; sons, James Gifford of Silverton, Raymond Gifford of Anderson, Calif., John Gifford of Silverton, Kenneth Gifford of Eagle Mountain, Utah and Clarence Gifford of Ft. Steward, Ga.; brothers, Bobby Gifford of San Leandro, Calif. and Gary Gifford of Manteca, Calif.; sister, Claudine Gifford of Bakersfield, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A service was held Feb. 7, in Eagle Point National cemetery, Eagle Point, Ore.

Arthur Henry Hemshorn
October 19, 1913 - February 17, 2004

Arthur Henry Hemshorn, 90, of Woodburn, died Feb. 17, 2004.
He was born in Mt. Angel Oct. 19, 1913, and raised in Mt. Angel on the family farm, graduating from Mt. Angel High School. He worked in the local cannery, cheese factory and at Tillamook Veneer Lumber Mill as a finisher. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife Margaret of Woodburn, sons Everett of Woodburn and Al of Salem; daughter Evelyn Smith of Portland, sister Velma McKay of Reno, Nev., three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be held Thursday at 7 p.m., and a funeral Mass Friday at 10 a.m., both at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Angel.
Inurnment follows services at Calvary cemetery. Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.

Ella Marie Krbec
September 10, 1906 - February 16, 2004

Ella Marie Krbec, 97 of Silverton, died Feb. 16, 2004. She was born Sept. 10, 1906 in Chicago, Ill., to Ladimir and Mary Kraisinger. She has told many great stories of her childhood days in Illinois, including making $1 a week in the 1920s and giving the entire sum to her mother, as the family was in need.
On June 6, 1925 she married James Smetana. She enjoyed many jobs, but one of her favorites was cooking for a doctor she had worked for at a local hospital. Her husband James preceded her in death in February 1961. She married Frank Krbec April 24, 1965, and they moved to Silverton in 1968. He preceded her in death in 1970.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Silverton, member of the Eastern Star, Silverton Grange #748 past president, past president of the Women’s Club, past director of Senior Voices, past president of Silverton Activities Center, a Loyal Berean, a volunteer for the food bank, Silverton Hospital and Marion County Health.
She leaves a legacy of volunteering, singing, cooking, a love for her family and friends and a great joy of praying for anyone in need.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Dolores Kiedaisch, her son Glen Smetana, her son-in-law Charles Kiedaisch, and her sisters Marion Albrect and Elizabeth Frykblom.
Survivors include her brother Edward Kraisinger of Naperville, Ill., brother Robert Kraisinger of Red Bluff, Calif., sister Adeline Fehrman of Readtown, Wisc., daughter-in-law Dorothy Smetana of Salem, stepson Frank and Ann Krbec of Battleground, Wash., six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is Saturday, 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church, 402 N. First St., Silverton.

Alfred Nicholas Boyer
August 15, 1914 - January 30, 2004

Alfred Nicholas Boyer, 89, of Silverton, died Jan. 30, 2004. He was born on Aug. 15, 1914 in Boyer, Idaho, the oldest of five children. He was the son of Maime Vandenboss and Charles Alfred Boyer. The family moved to Tigard in the early 1930s and Alfred graduated from Tigard High School. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Oregon.
He married Cara Dryden on Oct. 3, 1940. He taught upper grades and coached football at Arco, Idaho and Heppner, Ore. There he made the decision to seek his divinity degree at Garrett and Iliff seminaries. He was ordained in Portland by the United Methodist Church. Al and Cara served nine church congregations in Illinois, Colorado, California and Oregon over the next 40 years. A humble and spiritual man, his family and friends say they cherished his sense of humor and inventiveness, but his greatest gift was his dedication to people, inspiring them by his loving, accepting example.
His wife, Cara and three of their six children, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his children, Catherine Boyer of Silverton, Keith and Kay Boyer of Forest Grove, and Charles Boyer of Detroit, Ill.; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Arrangements were made through Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.

Virginia Alice Tunem
November 27, 1911 - November 26, 2003

Virginia Alice Tunem, 91, of Bothell, Wash., died Nov. 26, 2003. She was born on Nov. 27, 1911, in Livingston, Mont., to Charles and Malvina Buchanan. She married Erling Tunem and they both worked and operated their farm.
She is survived by her three daughters, Virginia Ann Wells of Yakatut, Alaska, Dorothy Besaw of Seattle, Wash., and Margaret Burk of Bothell, Wash.; 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband and a son, Carl, preceded her in death.
Services were held Monday at Purdy and Walters at Floral Hills Funeral Home in Lynwood, Wash. The graveside service was held Tuesday at Miller cemetery in Silverton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements were made by Purdy and Walters at Floral Hills Funeral Home in Lynwood, Wash.

Ava Marie Lydon
October 2, 2003

Ava Marie Lydon, 81, of Silverton, died Oct. 2, 2003. She was born and raised in Yale, Okla. She was a waitress and a telephone operator. She and Richard E. Lydon were married for 35 years. He preceded her in death in November 1977. Both were World War II veterans serving in the U.S. Army.
They had eight children together. They lost two infant sons and one infant daughter. Her son Michael preceded her in death in May 1989.
She loved to sing, teach Sunday school, read and garden. Her caregiver for nine years was her granddaughter Leesa Walch.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Kaser of Silverton; daughter Kathleen of Chicago; and sons Robert and Anthony, both of Spokane, Wash.; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
At her request, there will be no service. She will be cremated and returned to Spokane, Wash., to be next to her husband.

Art Perez (Dover)
August 5, 1976 - September 5, 2003

Art Perez (Dover), 26, of Salem, died Sept. 5, 2003. He was born Aug. 5, 1976, in Salem. He enjoyed playing for Silverton Little League as a child. He also raised pit bull dogs, played golf, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his mother Jane Perez of Salem; father Bryan Dover of Silverton; brothers Bryan Dover II of Salem; Mathew Dover of Silverton; sister Simona Gutierrez of Salem; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were held at St. Paul Catholic Church with Rev. William Hammelman officiating.
