Lloyd F. Hamby
November 17, 1911 - February 4, 2003

Lloyd F. Hamby, 92, of Salem, died Feb. 4, 2003. He was born Nov. 17, 1911 in Oxford, Kan. to Myrtle and William Hamby. His parents and two brothers, Dewey and Ted Hamby, preceded him in death. They moved to Ponca City, Colo. He worked in a feed and seed company until he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Okla. He served in World War II in the South Pacific, Philipines and Okinawa. Later he worked at the Oregon State Penitentiary. He retired as a correctional sergeant after 26 years. He married Evelyn in 1949 in Salem.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn; daughter Pat Aarhus of Silverton; son Al Shimondle of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Feb. 8 at Christ Lutheran Church, Salem. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Willamette Valley Hospice or to a charity of choice.

Raymond William Lucht
August 8, 1928 - December 22, 2002

Raymond William Lucht, 74, a longtime resident of Molalla, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at Willamette Falls Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on Aug. 8, 1928 in Silverton to William and Ida Lucht. He lived his entire life in the Molalla area and attended Molalla High School in the early 1940s. He was a farmer and grew filberts. He retired in 1988, but continued to farm for neighbors and himself. He was a longstanding member of the Moose Lodge and of Grace Lutheran Church in Molalla. He loved to play shuffleboard.
He married Ina James on June 19, 1948 in Stevenson, Wash. They met in school and had known each other for many years. They had six children, and the family has remained close.
Survivors include his wife Ina Mae, of Molalla; daughter Linda Lucht, of Molalla; daughter Susan Nelson, of Canby; son Gary Lucht, of Lake City, Fla.; son Ronnie Lucht, of Molalla; daughter Lois Fillis, of Molalla; and son Dean Lucht, Gladstone; brothers Arnold and Lloyd, both of Molalla and Larry Lucht, of California; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Molalla Nazarene Church on Dec. 28. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Molalla Funeral Chapel made the arrangements.

William C. Curran
August 10, 1921 - December 17, 2002

William C. Curran of Silverton passed away Dec. 17, 2002, after a brief illness. He was born on Aug. 10, 1921 in New York City. He was the son of Thomas C.W. Curran, a security agent for Railway Express Agency and Mary DeVine News-Palmer, a publications representative for AT&T.; He was educated in the public schools of New York City and was graduated from Flushing High School in 1939.
He entered Hamilton College in the fall of 1939 with the intention of becoming a Presbyterian minister, but he abandoned that plan when the United States entered WWII. He enlisted in the Navy in December 1941, and was called into active duty upon his graduation from Hamilton in 1943. He served in the Navy from 1943 until 1946, with the bulk of his service spent upon the Zane, a minesweeper and destroyer that saw action in the Pacific Theater. While in the Navy, he served with novelist Herman Wouk, and their experiences are thought to be the model for the novel, “The Caine Mutiny.” After discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in the University of Iowa, where he studied in the Iowa Writer’s Workshop and received his MA in English literature. He went on to teach English at Mt. Vernon and Coe Colleges, both in Iowa. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship in 1956, and studied German linguistics at the University of Vienna.
Upon returning to the United States, Curran entered government service, where he spent many years with the N.S.A. and the U.S.I.A. In 1961, he was appointed to the post of Cultural Attaché in Athens, Greece, where he served until 1965. He returned to teaching in the mid-sixties. His teaching career brought him to Oregon in 1972, when he began teaching at Oregon Episcopal Schools. Curran found his true love in writing, and left teaching to pursue a career as a freelance writer in the mid-seventies. Among his many accomplishments were the launch of two magazines, including Oregon People and Encore. He was a regular book reviewer for the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
As a writer, Curran will be remembered for his books on baseball. In his 60s he began to write about his lifelong passion for the sport and in 1985 he published his first baseball book, “Mitts: An Anecdotal History of the Art of Fielding.” His second book, “The Big Sticks: The Batting Revolution of the Twenties” followed in 1990. Strikeout: A Celebration of the Art of Pitching was published in 1995 and was nominated for best baseball book of that year.
Curran was a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, and had recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on baseball history. He was a lifetime Giants fan. He moved to Silverton in 1985 and served as a member of the library board.
He is survived by his former wife, Shirley Rossman Curran of Tempe, Ariz. and his children: Bruce Hammill Curran of Chapel Hill, N.C., Barry Dale Curran of Barcelona, Spain and Courtney Curran Stanford of Pasadena, Calif. and six grandchildren. Services are pending.

Phyllis L. Ferron
September 14, 1915 - December 25, 2002

Phyllis L. Ferron, 87, of Mt. Angel, died Dec. 25, 2002. She was born Sept. 14, 1915 and placed in an orphanage. She was adopted by the Rev. and Mrs. Holley, who raised her. She went to work for United Airlines as a seamstress and made seat covers, pillows and more for airplanes. She also worked for White Stag and other companies. She retired from United Airlines and moved to Oregon in 1969 and settled first in Scotts Mills and then in Mt. Angel.
She married Richard Ferron March 2, 1960. They had three children: Jaqueline, Geraldine and David. Richard preceded her in death March 1, 2002. Her hobbies included arts and crafts, sewing clothes for her 12 grandchildren and crocheting Christmas ornaments and teddy bears to sell at the Mt. Angel Senior Center, where she volunteered for 10 years. She was an active member of Keizer Church of Christ.
She is survived by her three children, Jaqueline Branton of Scio; Geraldine Parsons of Scotts Mills, David Rogers of Beaverton; and 12 grandchildren.
Memorial services will be Friday, 2 p.m. at the Keizer Church of Christ, 5405 Ridge Drive NE, Keizer. Rev. Rex Earnhart will officiate.

Brenda Ellen Smith
May 6, 1940 - November 26, 2002

Brenda Ellen (Nomer) Smith of Taylorsville, Utah died of cancer Nov. 26, 2002. She was 62. She was born May 6, 1940 to Asa and Violette Nomer in Madrid, Neb. She moved to Oregon shortly thereafter and to Scotts Mills in 1942. She graduated from Silverton High School in 1958.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Asa and Violette Nomer, and three brothers, Bud, Stan and Clark.
She is survived by her husband, Herb Smith of Taylorsville, Utah; daughters, Gena Edwards of Luling, Texas, and Cathy Gerwick of Magna, Utah; and sons, Brad Morris and Kelly Smith, both of Kerns, and Brock Carlson of Scotts Mills; sisters, Beryl Kellum and Mona Twiggs, both of Bend, Ore.
No services were scheduled.

Carl R. Sundquist
April 22, 1918 - October 11, 2002

Carl R. Sundquist, 84, of Silverton died Oct. 11, 2002.
Born in Astoria, Ore., April 22, 1918, Carl joined the Air Force and served during World War II as a pilot and bombardier. After his discharge he continued to enjoy flying, piloting several planes and most recently owning his own helicopter. He married Ruth Hosea in Tualatin in 1961 and went to work for Asbestos Local #36, retiring in 1981 as a pipe insulator. He was a member of Marquam Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Sundquist of Silverton; sons, Larry Sundquist of Idaho and Carl Sundquist of California.
Graveside services were today, 11 a.m. at Miller cemetery, Silverton. Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.

William L. Summers
April 27, 1918 - October 11, 2002

William L. Summers Jr., 84, died Oct. 11, 2002. He was born April 27, 1918 in El Paso, Texas. He served in the European Theater in World War II, worked as a farmer and retired from the Oregon Department of Agriculture after 16 years. He and Arloene, his wife of 63 years, enjoyed many hobbies and traveled the world. He is survived by his wife Arloene Summers of Salem; daughter Arloene Summers of Silverton; sons William Summers III of Eugene, Jerry Summers of Bellingham, Wash., Scott Summers of Salem; 19 grandchildren, great -grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, who completed five generations. His daughter Becky preceded him in death.
Memorial services were today, 10 a.m. at Saint Edwards Episcopal, Silverton. Contributions may be made to cancer research at OHSU, 1121 SW Salmon St. Suite 200, Portland, Ore. 97205-9945.
Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.

Esther Lucille Lyon
April 12, 1914 - October 12, 2002

Esther L. Lyon, 88, of Silverton, died Oct. 12, 2002 of natural causes.
Born in Silverton on April 12, 1914 to Christian and Mary Emma Liechty, Esther Lucille Liechty graduated from Silverton Union High School in 1931. She married Henry P. Lyon and they lived in California for 35 years before Henry preceded her in death in 1963. She returned to Silverton in 1966. She worked for Dr. Virgil Pettit as his bookkeeper and secretary for 15 years.
Survivors include her niece, Janice Penfield of Bakersfield, Calif.; nephew, Wallace Liechty of Portland; cousin, Howard Liechty of Silverton; and her friend, Tom Eldred of Silverton.
Graveside services were Oct. 15 at Silverton cemetery. Arrangements were by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.

Phillip A. Carnine
March 13, 1939 - August 5, 2002

Phillip A. “Tony” Carnine of Salem died Aug. 5, 2002. He was born March 13, 1939 in Weisner, Idaho, and moved to Salem in 1949. A graduate of South Salem High School, he joined the U. S. Air Force in 1956 and married Pat Etzel in 1957. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the United States and Puerto Rico and Guam, retiring in 1976 as a tech sergeant. Returning to Salem he worked for the East Salem Water District, FebCo and later Senvoy Co. He enjoyed casinos, country music, Western movies, having coffee with the guys and spending time with his kids and grandkids. He was a 25-year member of the Elks.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Carnine; sons Bruce and Rob Carnine, both of Salem; daughter Jackie Hamm of Salem; brother Larry Carnine of Springfield; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services at Mt. Hope cemetery, Salem, were Aug. 10.

Rose Marie Hoffer
November 15, 1907 - August 11, 2002

Rose Marie Hoffer, 94, of Mt. Angel, Ore., died, Aug. 11, 2002. She was born Nov. 15, 1907 in Hitchcock, Okla. to Charles and Mary (Schmidt) Weitz. She lived in Texas before moving to Oregon in 1922 at the age of 14. On June 16, 1925 she married Wilbur Duncan in Eugene, Ore. He died Dec. 10, 1962 in Salem, Ore.
She married Gene Hoffer July 10, 1968 and moved to Mt. Angel. He died Feb. 2, 1992. She worked as a waitress and secretary/bookkeeper for many years retiring in 1975. She enjoyed cooking special dinners for her family, going to the beach and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her memberships include: St. Mary’s Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary Unit #89, Willamette Salon 812, 8/40 and Woodburn F.O.E. Auxiliary #3284.
She is survived by her stepchildren: sons Bob Duncan of North Bend, Ore.; Dick Hoffer of Mt. Angel; daughters Sue Ellis of East Wenatchee, Wash.; Barb Newbigging of Bremerton, Wash.; Ginny Stanerson of Scotts Mills; Nancy Williams of Molalla; Kathy Devine of Boyce, La.; and Kay Wiesner of Brooks, Ore; brothers Charles Weitz of Tracy, Calif.; George Weitz of Sacramento, Calif.; sisters Pearl Jones, Opal Weitz and Delma Laux, all of Calif.; and Mary Cunnington of Bothell, Wash. Four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. Rose had 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation is 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. today at Unger Funeral Chapel, Mt. Angel. The Rosary will be Thursday, 10 a.m. with Mass immediately following at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery, Mt. Angel, beside her husband, Gene. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Willamette Valley Hospice, 2700 Market St., Salem, Ore., or the charity of one’s choice.

Eileen Judith Apple
July 22, 1942 - July 13, 2002

Eileen Judith Apple of Salem, Ore., died July 13, 2002.
She died at her home in Salem, following a long illness. She was 59. She was born July 22, 1942, growing up on the family farm in McGrath, Minn. She was the oldest child of Elmer and Evelyn Simonson of Silverton, her father passed away in 1999. She has a brother, Ronald Simonson of Salem, Ore., and sisters Karen Evans in Sioux City, Iowa; Novella Simonson in Oakland, Calif.; and Lynette Knudsen in San Jose, Calif. She graduated from McGrath High School and married Dale Frase in 1960. They are the parents of five children, Michele, Matthew, Jennifer and Teresa, all of California and Patrice of Lebanon, Ore. They have eight grandchildren. The couple moved to San Jose, Calif. in 1962, where Eileen worked at the Crocker Citizens Bank and later as business partner and accountant in their printing business. Through the years she attended several colleges, getting training in cost accounting, taxes and computer operations. Following a divorce, Eileen owned and operated a cafe in Persia, Iowa, later moving to Silverton where she married Bethel Apple. She moved to Salem, where she had her own accounting business until her death. She was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church. She loved animals and working in politics, business affairs, music and writing as well as being a homemaker. A memorial service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m, at Unger Funeral Chapel. Interment at Valley View cemetery in Silverton will follow the service. Contributions may be made to Union Gospel Mission. Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.

Percy LeRoy Jones
May 18, 1923 - August 6, 2002

Percy LeRoy Jones, 79, of Silverton, Ore. died Aug. 6, 2002.
Percy was born May 18, 1923 in Silverton, Ore., to Percy O. and Selma Brenden Jones. Percy served as a Fireman First Class during WWII in the United States Navy from Dec. 1942 to Oct. 1945. He was a custodian for the former 4-C School District for many years retiring in 1985. Percy was a charter member of the Silverton Elks and the VFW. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Viona Jones of Silverton; sons, Richard Jones of Silverton; Larry Jones and Daniel Jones, both of Salem; granddaughters Regina Jones of Beaverton and Jayme Jones of Salem; brother, Donald Jones of Salem; and a sister, Bonita Tulare of Silverton.
Graveside Services were Aug. 10 at Valley View cemetery in Silverton.
Contributions may be made to Mid-Willamette Valley Hospice. Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.

Vael V. King
August 16, 1912 - October 16, 2006

Vael V. King, 94, of Silverton died Oct. 16.
She was born at the family home in the Central Howell area to James and Josephine Rogers. The family moved to Silverton at the end of the first World War. She graduated from Salem High School in 1931. Growing up, she enjoyed music lessons, roller-skating and playing ball. During the summers she picked berries and hops, and later worked at a local cannery.
She married Verle King on Oct. 14, 1934. She worked hard helping her husband on the farm and raising two children.
She enjoyed photography and gardening. She loved entertaining guests, and hosting many canasta parties and gatherings. She spent many evenings dancing to the sounds of Lawrence Welk.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998 and a daughter, Loree, in 1995.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James “Leon” and Fran King of Salem; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton. Interment was at Union Hill cemetery, Sublimity. Remembrances: Lone Oak Care Home or Willamette Valley Hospice.
