Leo Penn
January 1, 1900

Leo R. Penn, 70, Olympia, Wash. died Jan. 24. He is survived by his wife, and two adult children.

Lavonna Chase
June 19, 1932 - February 12, 2007

Lavonna Chase, 74, died Feb. 9.
Aside from being a full-time job to her four children, she worked at local veneer mills. Later she worked at several restaurants in the Mapelton and Florence area. She always greeted her customers with a smile. She enjoyed working in her yard and was known for having the most beautiful petunias around town. She loved to sew, work on crafts and paint. Prior to her passing, she resided at Marion Estates in Sublimity where she enjoyed visiting with her many friends. She always looked forward to Sunday church services at the estates.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Jewell Hall and son Perry Hall.
Survivors include her children, Jeana Thompson of Springfield, Judy and Chuck Bollger of Silverton; brothers and their wives, Robert and Helen Green of Florence, Ivan and Twyla Bryant of Medford, Richard Green of Oakridge; sister, Alice Kirchhefer of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; and 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the New Lutheran Church in Florence. A potluck will follow in the fellowship hall.

Julia M. ‘Susie’ Schmitz
March 24, 1948 - February 27, 2008

Born to Robert and Mildred Predeek Miller, Susie was a homemaker and farmer with her husband, Gene. Susie’s proudest accomplishment was raising her children, who remember her as a strong woman with a big smile and a generous heart.
Susie was a Blue Bird leader, PTA member, room parent and CCD teacher. Susie enjoyed being the St. Mary’s Parish wedding coordinator, serving coffee after church and playing bunco with her friends.
Survivors include her daughters, Aletha Foster of Portland, Jennifer Rosenblad of Hubbard, Bonny Glendenning of Canby, Theresa Tucker of Klamath Falls, Rebecca Schmitz of Portland; daughter-in-law, Barbara Schmitz of Scotts Mills; her mother, Mildred Miller of Mount Angel; sisters and brothers, Barbara McGinnis of Milwaukie, Donald Miller of Woodburn, twin brother, John Miller of Corbett, Mary Fiocchi of Portland, Gary Miller of Corbett, Alan Miller of Bethel, Alaska and Ilene Spoljaric of Long Beach, Wash.; grandchildren, Johnny and Samuel Rosenblad, Brooke and Grant Glendenning, Adeline, Elizabeth and Henry Schmitz.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Schmitz, on June 21, 1993; her son, Richard Eugene Schmitz on August 16, 2006; and her father, Robert Miller.
Funeral mass was held March 3 at St. Mary’s Church. Memorials to St. Mary’s.

Tucson Myers
November 29, 1929 - February 24, 2008

Tucson was born to Altheda and Charles Myers.
He served in the California National Guard then enlisted in active duty as a Petty Officer 2nd Class in 1952.
He married Lynette ‘Lonnie’ Duner on June 27, 1953. Their family grew to include two sons, Mark and Joel.
Following discharge,Tucson studied agricultural engineering. He worked for the California State Department of Water Resources.
In 1967, the family moved to Oregon. Tucson served the Oregon Water Resources Department until 1975, when he began a private practice as a civil engineer in Silverton.
Tucson served on the Silverton School Board and the State Teachers Standards and Practices Commission, retiring in 1995.
Survivors: wife, Lonnie; sons, Mark (Sandy) of Silverton and Joel (Louise) of Dayton; grandsons, Joseph, John, David, Adam (Crystal), and Daniel Myers; granddaughters, Emily Myers (Shawn) Carter, and Rachel; great-grandchildren, Jenny and Riley Carter and Lily Myers; nieces, Gail (Mike) King of Depoe Bay, and Shanna (Ken) Stark of Tuolomne, Calif.; nephew, Bob (Karen) Wolfe of Richmond, Calif.; sister-in-law, Duane Bell Duner (Gene); and brother-in-law, Richard Duner.
No services. Memorials: Silver Falls School District.

Nicodemus ‘Nick’ Weiss
January 10, 1927 - February 23, 2008

Nick was born Jan. 10, 1927, to Alois and Ottilla Weiss in Glen Ullin, N.D. He moved to Salem as a teenager and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Salem.
Nick served in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a weatherman for the occupation forces in Japan during WWII.
Nick married Betty Jean Meyers in 1948 and moved to Silverton where he owned and operated the Nu-Method Dry Cleaners for 30 years. He was also a real estate agent until his retirement in 1990.
Nick was a charter member of the Silverton Elks Lodge and served as Exalted Ruler in 1973-74.
Survivors: wife, Betty; brother, Dr. James (Louise) Weiss of Portland; daughters, Linda (Dwight) Apple of Beaverton and Janet (Duane) Wilson of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren, Anthony (Lacey) Wilson of Winnemucca, Nev., Jennee (Ernest) Raz of Portland, and Megan (Mathew) Kaplan of Reno, Nev.; six great-grandchildren, Madisen and Isaac Wilson, Leah and Kaleb Raz, and Isabel and Sophie Kaplan.
A memorial was held March 1 at the Silverton Elks Lodge. Memorials may be made to Willamette Valley Hospice.

Evelyn B. Hamby
1917 - 2008

Salem, Oregon was the birth place of Evelyn Hamby. She graduated high school at 16.
Lloyd Hamby she married in 1949, more than 50 years they’d have combined.
Her church was Christ the Good Shepherd, traveling was another favored endeavor. Evelyn’s family was key and fun, children Pat and Richard Aarhus, Alfred and Martha Shimondle her only ones.
Her nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren were a source of joy.
On February 15, Evelyn was called home, and Jesus made her one of His own.
Memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Salem. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the church.

Elsie Helen Reischke
August 18, 1924 - February 17, 2008

SUBLIMITY — Elsie was born to David and Sarah Giesbrecht in Dallas. She graduated from Perrydale High School in 1943. She married Carlton E. Reischke in 1945 and they were married for 57 years. He passed away in 2001.
During her life she loved entertaining her family and friends. She was talented in many ways, such as writing and directing Christmas programs at church. Her biggest joy was her grandchildren and entertaining them on their farm.
Survivors include her brother, Ed Giesbrecht of Rickreall; daughters, Janet C. Straw of Gates and Carla K. Wheeler of Keizer; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services held February 23 at Keizer Community Church. Interment at Salt Creek cemetery, Dallas. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation or the Union Gospel Mission.

H. Dwight Huffman
November 8, 1918 - February 21, 2008

Dwight Huffman, 89, died Feb. 21, 2008. He was born Nov. 8, 1918 in Oklahoma and grew up in Oklahoma and Arizona. He was a Navy veteran of WW II and Korea.
Dwight married Helen on Feb. 20, 1938, in Tucson, Ariz. and they were married for 70 years. Dwight and Helen first moved to Silverton in 1961. Then they moved to California in 1964 and returned to Oregon in 1976 when Dwight retired from IBM.
Dwight was a past president of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, and the Salem Senate-Aires, with whom he sang for 20 years. He also sang with the Grandfather’s Quartet and the Silvertones.
Dwight was preceded in death by his son, Paul, in 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Huffman of Mount Angel; son and his wife, Dwight Jr. and Shaku Huffman of Silverton; brother, William Huffman of Colville, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Linda Huffman; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial service is 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Silverton. Interment Valley View cemetery, Silverton Memorials: Trinity Lutheran Church.

Myrna A. King
May 2, 1938 - December 5, 2007

Myrna A. King of Silverton, passed away on Dec. 5, 2007, at Salem Hospital.
Myrna was born May 2, 1938, in Anton, Colo., to May and Delbert King, the seventh of 10 children. They moved to Silverton in 1949. She graduated from Silverton High School in 1956. Myrna was a flight attendant for United Airlines for many years, until her recent retirement.
Myrna spent many hours volunteering for the Humane Society, sharing her great love of animals with others. She also loved her family, spending many hours traveling to be with them, and spending time with a large number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Myrna was preceded in death by her sister, Zelma Thayer; and brother, Gerald King.
Survivors include sisters, Joyce Marcum, Agnes Arndt, and Irma Copple, all of Salem, Donna King of Rickreall, and Marian King of Cambria, Calif.; two brothers, Allan King of Denver, Colo., and Larry King of Boulder, Colo.; 15 nieces and nephews who were very special to her; as well as a large number of friends. She will be missed.
Private funeral services were held for Myrna on Jan. 13, 2008.

Anna (Dickman) Nickodemus
1922 — 2008

Anna, 85, of Ontario, Ore., a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died Jan. 5, 2008.
Anna was born in Silverton in 1922 to the late Edward and Augusta Dickman. She grew up on the family farm, which her brother, Paul Dickman continues to farm with his sons and grandsons.
Anna married Albert Nickodemus in 1943. As the wife of a Lutheran pastor, Anna lived in El Centro, Calif., Burns, Ashland, New Plymouth and Weiser, Idaho. Anna and Albert had eight children, six daughters and two sons. Albert died in 1991.
Anna enjoyed studying the Bible, quilting, sewing, nature, gardening, reading and sporting events. Her faith in God guided her life, and her kindness, hospitality and love were felt by many.
Survivors include siblings, Helen Miller of Woodburn and Paul Dickman of Silverton; eight children, 24 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.

Fern Boletta Rue
July 19, 1911 - February 24, 2008

Fern was born to Julius and Malinda (Hagen) Pederson in Harvey, N.D. She grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Lutheran Deaconess Hospital Nursing School in Minneapolis.
Fern moved to the Willamette Valley in the late 1930s and married Waldo Rue on Sept. 5, 1948, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Silverton.
She enjoyed her work as a nurse for 24 years. She was a member of PEO. Her close church friends who were her support group provided her with many hours of good book reading and fellowship.
Fern is survived by her sons, Joel Rue of Silverton and James Rue of Portland; daughter, Elizabeth Ernst of Turner; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial service was held March 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Silverton. Interment at Valley View cemetery
Contributions may be made to French Prairie Care Center, Woodburn or Immanuel Lutheran Church, Silverton.
