Laurie Benoit

She was born in Portland on Nov. 11, 1972 to George C. and Patricia A. Traynor Benoit.
She had been a resident of Newport since 1996. She attended schools in Roseville, Calif.
Survivors include her mother, Patricia Traynor of Newport; brothers Jon Traynor and Dan Benoit, both of Newport; a sister, Petal Gerlitz of Newport; a grandmother, Freda Traynor of Roseville, Calif,; a niece, Leona Gerlitz; and nephews Jacob Benoit, and Lucas, Liam and Leif Gerlitz, all of Newport.
At the decedent’s request, no services are planned.
Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests donations to Bateman Funeral Home in her memory to help defray funeral costs.

Doris LaBay

She was born in Boulder, Colo. on June 17, 1923 to John and Bernice Debacker.
She married Elliott LeBay in Boulder on March 1, 1942.
Two weeks later, her husband was inducted into the Army.
Following World War II, the LaBays moved to Denver.
She later worked as a bookkeeper in Colorado and in Oregon in the music industry and the dental business.
The LaBays moved to Portland in 1973. The couple found a weekend retreat on Siletz Bay in Cutler City.
The couple retired in 1984 and moved to Cutler City.
Mrs. LaBay was active with the Lincoln County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and St. James Episcopal Church in Lincoln City.
Survivors include her husband, Elliott; son and daughter-in-law, David and Melinda; a sister, Noreen Schum; grandsons Larry Eigel, Shaun and Brandon LaBay; and three great-grandsons, all of Colorado.
Interment was at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on June 18.
Memorial gifts can be sent to St. James Episcopal Church or to the Lincoln County Chapter of the American Red Cross..

Gerald “Jerry” Thomas

He was born in French Camp, Calif. on Aug. 21, 1968 to Lewis and Peggy Thomas.
He lived in Oregon most of his life, and attended school in Sweet Home.
He had lived in Eddyville for the past 10 years.
He worked in the construction of condominiums and homes, and at lumber mills.
He enjoyed spending time in the woods picking moss, gathering rocks, and hunting, and enjoyed bead work.
Survivors include his parents, Lewis and Peggy Thomas of Eddyville; brothers Walter McDonald of Cascadia, Harold Thomas of Wausau, Wis. and Timothy Thomas of Lacey, Wash.; a sister, Barbara Self of Lyman, Wash.; and a grandmother, Frances Thomas of Sweet Home.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Sue Thomas, in 1977, and a brother, James Lewis Thomas in 1966.
Viewing will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (Friday) at Workman and Steckly Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long St., Sweet Home.
Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel.
Workman and Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Harold Eggen

He was born in Fosston, Minn. on Feb. 8, 1903. He was a retired deputy sheriff.
He lived in Newport from 1953 to 1972, and had lived in Woodburn for the last 20 years.
He was a member of the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association and the Alsea Bay Masonic Lodge #203 A.F. and A.M. in Waldport.
Survivors include his daughter, Rita Martin of Portland; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora, on Oct. 13, 1966.
Services will be held Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at Hillside Chapel, Inc., 1306 Seventh St., Oregon City.
Burial will be in the Rose City Cemetery

Penny Stocker

She was born in Salem on March 5, 1963.
She moved to Canby in the late 1970s and graduated from North Marion High School in Aurora in 1981.
She was a travel agent for Travel On Travel in Wilsonville for about a year, and then for All About Hawaii in Tigard for about six months. She was a member of the church..
Survivors include her daughters, Jessica Madden and Kayla Madden; a son, Travis Madden; her parents, Warren and Lila; a sister, Nancy Permin, all of Canby; a brother, Douglas, of Gladstone; and aunts and uncle Marion Stocker of Logsden and Jack and Lilly Stocker of South Beach.
Services were held Wednesday in Canby.
The family suggests remembrances to a trust fund for her children at U.S. Bank in Canby.

Cleo Moats

She was born in Clarksville, Ark. on Jan. 16, 1909 to Bernice L. Ingraham and Carl H. Massie.
She spent her childhood on a homestead in Wyoming and in Hulett, Sundance and Newcastle, Wyo.
The family moved to Grants Pass in 1922.
She graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1926.
She married George W. Moats in Ashland on July 9, 1927.
The Moats were active members of the Newport community, where they owned and operated George’s Bakery from 1936 to 1946.
They moved to Corvallis prior to owning and operating Cleo’s Bakery in Roseburg.
Later, they moved to Eugene, where Mrs. Moats worked as a secretary at the University of Oregon.
When it was time to retire in 1972, the couple lived the past 29 years in Waldport.
Mrs. Moats was involved in civic and fraternal organizations in Newport and Waldport.
She enjoyed writing, storytelling and gardening.
Survivors include her daughter, Molly L. Hansford of Eugene; a son, Bill Moats of Roseburg; a brother, Jack Nassie of Medford; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982, a granddaughter in 1982, and a grandson in 1997.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. June 26 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Waldport.
Burial was at Eureka Cemetery in Newport. Arrangements were made by the Bateman Funeral Home.

Kenneth Martz

He was born in Yuba City, Calif. on Aug. 18, 1954 to Robert and Lenora J. Rock Martz.
He had been a resident of Newport for the past 17 years.
He married Lesley Dickson in Eugene on Jan. 29, 1977.
For the past five years, he had been the owner/operator of Central Coast Janitorial in Newport.
He was a member of the Toledo Foursquare Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lesley, of Newport; a daughter, McKenzie Ray Martz; sons Kenneth R. and Kyle J. Martz, all of Newport; his parents, Robert and Lenora Martz; sisters Rochelle L. Sandberg of Eugene, and Linda J. Haley and Sarah A. Wilson, all of Redding, Calif.
Memorial services will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Toledo Foursquare Church.
Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests donations to the Kenneth Martz Memorial Fund, in care of Toledo Foursquare Church.

Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
An account to help defray burial expenses has been established at West Coast Bank.
The family suggests memorial donations in lieu of flowers.

James Sell

He was born in Detroit, Mich. on Dec. 30, 1944. He spent his early years as a drywall contractor in southern California and his later years owning and operating several “Fatte’s” Pizza Parlors in Oregon and California.
He had recently relocated to the Oregon coast to be closer to his family and help his son with his drywall company.
In his free time, Mr. Sell could usually be found in one of the area’s restaurants telling stories and swapping jokes.
Survivors include son Gary Sell of Grants Pass and James Sell of Waldport; daughters Rhonda Puckett of San Juan Capistrano, Calif. and Nicole Rush of Killeen, Texas; step-sons Gary Davis and Glen Davis of Grover Beach, Calif.; sisters. Linda Gustafson and Darlene Wyland of Laguna Beach, Calif., Terri Ondrasek of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and Debbie Cardozso of South Beach, Calif.; a brother, Jerry Sell of Claussen, Mich.; and grandchildren David, Tyler, Timothy, Johnny, Ashley, Casey, Kyle, Cory, Jasmine, Joseph, Joshua and Holly.
Private memorial services will be held by the family, and condolences can be sent care of James Sell, PO Box 956, Waldport 97394.
