Virginia May Guthmiller
The funeral for Virginia May Guthmiller will be at 11 a.m. today at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. The Rev. Norman Van Manen of Rogue Valley Medical Center Hospice will officiate. Private interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery, Eagle Point.

Mrs. Guthmiller, 76, of Ashland, died Thursday (May 23, 2002) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Home Care & Hospice Services, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born May 7, 1926, in Bismark, N.D., a daughter of Elmer and Myrtle (Berg) Mathias. On Oct. 4, 1945, in Jamestown, N.D., she married Albert A. Guthmiller, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1962.

Mrs. Guthmiller enjoyed gardening, dogs and horses.

Survivors in addition to her husband include two sons, Robert, Talent, and David, Medford; two sisters, Mary Trautman, Jamestown, N.D., and Polly Lueck, Spiritwood, N.D.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Eston Mathias.

Melvin Ray Schaffner
Melvin Ray Schaffner, 69, of Hornbrook, Calif., died Wednesday (May 22, 2002) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Siskiyou County Unit, P.O. Box 291, Yreka, CA 96097.

He was born on May 10, 1933, in Southern California, a son of Delmen and Laura Schaffner.

Mr. Schaffner worked as a certified nurse's assistant for many years.

He was a member of the Ashland Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mavis Cameron Schaffner, Hornbrook, Calif.; a son, Mark, Eureka, Calif.; a daughter, Dr. Melinda Skau, Nigeria; a brother, Dr. Marlowe Schaffner, Canyon Lake, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Girdner Funeral Chapel, Yreka, Calif.

Saloma G. Bingman
The graveside service for Saloma G. Bingman will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 31, at Eagle Point National cemetery. J.C. Holden will officiate.

Mrs. Bingman, 92, of Sedona, Ariz., formerly of Medford and Grants Pass, died March 14, 2002, at Kachina Point Health Center.

She was born Saloma Stillwell on Aug. 26, 1909, in Medford and attended elementary school and high school in Medford. She also lived in Grants Pass. On May 29, 1949, in Boise, Idaho, she married H.R. Bingman, who died in 1987.

Mrs. Bingman was a beautician for many years in Klamath Falls. She retired from a cashier position with Sears in Boise, Idaho, in 1965.

Survivors include two sons, John Foster, Boise, Idaho, and Fred Foster, Sedona, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Shirley Rothleutner, Sumner, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Arrangements: Sedona Funeral Home Inc., Sedona, Ariz.

Helen Kathryn Roadman
The memorial service for Helen Kathryn Roadman will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Wilson’s Chapel of Roses, Roseburg. Internment will be at the Roseburg Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Roadman, 87, of Medford, died Tuesday (May 21, 2002) at Farmington Square in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Roseburg, 432 SE Kane St., Roseburg, OR 97470, or to The Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

She was born on June 25, 1914, in Roseburg, a daughter of David and Helen Hennigh. On Sept. 3, 1937, she married Ted Roadman, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Roadman attended elementary school in Roseburg through eighth grade, she was a graduate of Roseburg High School. She moved to Birmingham, Ala., and attended Birmingham Southern College for one year. She moved to Oregon and attended Oregon State University.

She worked at the telephone company in Roseburg. She was a leader in Campfire Girls and Job’s Daughters.

Mrs. Roadman was a 50-year member of the Oakland Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, where she was a Past Worthy Matron. She belonged to the local chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution.

She enjoyed working in the yard, displaying her flowers, traveling with the Masonic camping group, the Sojourners Christian Camping group, and touring the country with her husband.

Survivors include two sons, David, Medford and Ken, Bend; two daughters, Sharon Malley, Portland, and Joanne Clark, Port Gamble, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses, Roseburg.

Jay B. Cochran
Mr. Jay B. Cochran of Phoenix died Friday, May 24, 2002, at his home. No services are planned.

Memorial contributions can be made to Lions Sight and Hearing Center, Vocational Fund, 228 N. Holly St., Medford, OR 97501.

Mr. Cochran, 95, was born Nov. 30, 1906, in Brownsville to William and Flora Cochran. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1930 and worked as a logger for many years before starting his own company, J.C. Pump Service, which he operated for 21 years.

He married Margaret Kent in 1946, and she preceded him in death. He then married Margaret McDowell in 1968, who survives.

Mr. Cochran was a handyman and an inventor. He enjoyed playing the guitar and golf and was an honorary member of the Oak Knoll’s Men Club. He was also an avid San Francisco 49er’s fan.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are his son Bill Clark of Phoenix; his daughters Karen Sparks of Albuquerque, N.M., Diane Kubiak of Vancouver, Wa., and Donna Floyd of Medford; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Cochran; his sisters Alda Wolfe and Mildred Green; his brother, Robert Cochran; and a great granddaughter, Jessica Hawley.

Carol Martin
The funeral for Carol Martin will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday (May 28, 2002) at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. The Rev. Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospital will officiate. Mrs. Martin, 57, of Gold Hill, died Saturday at her home.

She was born Dec. 28, 1944, in Las Cruces, N.M., a daughter of James and Willie Mae Armstrong. On April 17, 1983, in Las Cruces, she married Floyd Martin, who survives.

The couple moved to Oregon in 1978 from Los Gatos, Calif., living part-time in both the Rogue Valley and Salem until settling here in 1991.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed entertaining, gardening and travel.

Survivors in addition to her husband are a son, Randy Martin, of Salem; two daughters, Jamie Thomas of Eugene, and Becky Weaver, of La Grande; a sister, Patsy Crup, of Upper Lake, Calif; five brothers, Franklin Armstrong, of Dewitt, Ark., Charles Armstrong, of Van Buren, Ark., Rick Armstrong, of Santa Clara, Calif., Larry Armstrong and Wayne Armstrong, both of Nice, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, a sister and a brother. Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

George Zuspann
A private service is planned for George Albert Zuspann. Mr. Zuspann, 71, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday (May 22, 2002) in Kingman, Ariz.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or to a chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous.

He was born Dec. 7, 1930, in Goodland, Kan., a son of George and Iris Zuspann. He graduated from Medford High School in 1949. On Dec. 4, 1951, at Island, Wash., he married Patricia Hamilton.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954.

Mr. Zuspann worked as a news production director for several television stations. He enjoyed hunting, travel and sports and was active in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Survivors include a son, Dan Zuspann, of Wasilla, Wash.; three daughters, Debbie Kacenga, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Lorena Hergenrether, of Burns, and Robin Sparks, of Central Point; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lois King
Lois King, 82, of Medford, died Sunday (May 26, 2002) at her home. Arrangements will be announced by Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.
Sarah Frances Slagle
The funeral Mass for Sarah Frances Slagle will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland. The Rev. Raymond Finnerty will officiate.

A recitation of the Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Coos Bay, at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Slagle, 93, of Ashland, died Friday (May 24, 2002) at her home.

She was born June 20, 1908, at Castle Shannon, Penn., to George and Mary (Dougherty) Holmes. In 1913 her family moved to Marshfield, (now Coos Bay), where she attended Catholic school.

In 1929, she married Hollis Harold Slagle. The couple moved to North Bend, where she worked at Safeway and The Gown Shop. They moved to La Pine in 1955 to operate a motel, and later settled in the Rogue Valley, where she worked in a number of stores and restaurants, including the Medford Hotel.

She was a regular blood donor at the American Red Cross, where she contributed more than 10 gallons through the years. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, and attended Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland.

Survivors include her son, Laurence Slagle, Ashland, her daughter, Dolores Hard, North Bend; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Four sisters, two brothers, and two grandchildren preceded her in death.

Funeral arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Charles Almon Bishop
A graveside service for Charles Almon Bishop will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Eagle Point National cemetery.

He died at his home Friday (May 24, 2002).

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501.

Mr. Bishop, 77, of Eagle Point, was born May 23, 1925, in Cordell, Okla. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Coos Bay in 1948.

In 1949, he married Billie Stinson, who survives. He attended Texas Christian University and was a long-haul freight driver. He also served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1950.

Mr. Bishop enjoyed spending time with his dogs.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his son, W.D., Rogue River; two daughters, Charyl Ray, Medford, and Bobbie Paquette of Belfair, Wash.; two brothers, H.H. Bishop of Mojave, Calif., and Bobby of California; his sister, Mary Warner, Central Point; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Doug and Neil.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Home.

Carol Martin
The funeral for Carol Martin will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday (May 28, 2002) at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. The Rev. Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate.

Mrs. Martin, 57, of Gold Hill, died Saturday at her home.

Judith E. Fisher
A celebration of life service for Judith E. Fisher will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at 13555 Agate Road, Eagle Point.
Mrs. Fisher, 95, of Medford, died May 21, 2002, at Eagle Cove Assisted Living Community.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1660 E. McAndrews Road, Medford, OR 97504.

Mrs. Fisher was born on July 23, 1906, in Sweden. On May 18, 1927, in Medford, she married William Henry Fisher, who preceded her in death.

Together, the Fishers operated the Talk of the Town restaurant at the airport.

She was a member of the Eastern Star for more than 60 years. She was also a member of the Central Point Grange for close to 70 years and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed baking cookies.

She is survived by two sons, Robert L. and John W., both Eagle Point; a daughter, Ruth B. Clark, Philomath; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home.

Robert William Short
Robert William Short, 47, of Central Point, died Friday (May 24, 2002) at Medford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Medford.
