Ronald Nissen

Ronald Austin Nissen, 51, of Depoe Bay drowned June 9, 2004, when he became entangled in fishing gear after his boat overturned offshore from Lincoln Beach.
He was born Dec. 13, 1952, in Portland to Mary C. (Austin) and Donald Nissen.
He was a graduate of David Douglas High School and Portland State University, both in Portland. He enjoyed gymnastics and excelled at the sport during high school and college; in 1971, he won the state championship.
He moved to Depoe Bay 28 years ago and began a career in commercial fishing.
He loved sport and commercial fishing.
Survivors include his parents, Mary and Don Nissen of Portland; his wife of 20 years, Mary Nissen; a stepson, Parrish Olson of Depoe Bay; two brothers, Donald K. Nissen of Gresham and Chris Nissen of Portland; a sister, Nancy Brooke of West Linn; and seven nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Depoe Bay City Park, followed by a potluck upstairs at the Spouting Horn Restaurant. Bateman Funeral Home of Newport is handling the arrangements.

Ronald McKibben

Ronald Dwayne McKibben, 46, of South Beach, died June 11, 2004, in Newport following a long illness.
He was born Feb. 24, 1958, in Newport to Doris Eleanor (Case) and Wayne Alva McKibben.
He graduated from Newport High School in 1977.
He worked as a choker setter and log truck driver, and was a chef at 4J's and Sons restaurant and the Embarcadero Resort. For the past 14 years he was employed by Swanson Pest Management.
He did volunteer service with Boy Scout Troop 62.
He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his mother, Doris Case, of Otis; his wife, Valerie McKibben; two sons, Shelby Scott McKibben of Portland and Chad Chase McKibben of Arizona; three daughters, Jenny Collette McKibben of Arizona, and Shannon Grace McKibben and Kaitlyn Marie McKibben, both of South Beach; a brother, Bert McKibben of South Beach; a grandchild, Ethan McKibben of Arizona; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne, in 1992.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Yachats Memorial Park. Bateman Funeral Home of Newport is handling the arrangements.

Donald Russell

Donald Russell, 20, of Blodgett died June 12, 2004, near Broomfield, Colo., as a result of a traffic accident while en route to Denver, where he was enrolled as a student at DeVry University.
He was born Aug. 1, 1983.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Eddyville school, followed by interment at Harlan Cemetery. McHenry Funeral Home of Corvallis is handling the arrangements.

Thomas Knudsen

Thomas Albert Knudsen, 60, of Newport died June 5, 2004, of heart disease.
He was born April 12, 1944, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Clarice Ella (Rhoades) and Maurice Knudsen. He was raised and attended schools in Idaho Falls.
He worked as a hotel chef. He was a certified paralegal and an ordained minister, and retired as a certified nursing assistant.
He married Kathy M. O'Neil in July 1989 in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
He lived in many places, and moved from Arizona to Oregon to be near family.
He enjoyed woodcarving, painting, and cooking.
He loved his dogs, Alpha and Squeaks.
Survivors include his mother, Clarice Knudsen of Salt Lake City, Utah; his wife, Kathy Knudsen; a daughter, Danielle Knudsen of Newport; two sons, Ryan Cornwall of Toledo and Jeremy Knudsen of Indianapolis, Ind.; two stepdaughters, Tiffany Doherty of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Shannon Tanner of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Maurine Harker of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Kris Poloski of Idaho Falls, Idaho; five grandchildren, Tyler Cornwall, Josh Cornwall, Megan Cornwall, Patrick Cornwall, and Sophie Cornwall, all of Toledo; his mother-in-law, Dannis O'Neil of Toledo; two cousins and their wives, Bill and Norma Cummins and Mike and Sherry Cummins, all of Scottsdale, Ariz.; an aunt and uncle, Juanita and Garth Cummins of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Maurice Knudsen, on Dec. 4, 1991, in Idaho Falls, Idaho; two aunts, Velma Emery and Alberta Calson, in 2003; grandparents, Ella Rhoades on April 10, 1981, and Dusty Rhoades on March 19, 1978; and an uncle, Ray Rhoades.
At his request, no memorial service is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Heritage Funeral Home of Portland handled the arrangements.

Donald Whelan

Donald Bennett Whelen, 81, of Newport died June 8, 2004, of heart disease.
He was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Salem to Meinrade (Fahey) and Augustine Whelen.
He graduated from Salem High School and the University of Oregon, Eugene; and attended Oregon State University, Corvallis, for two years.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II, and was an armed guard and a signalman on liberty ships.
He worked for the State of Oregon as an industrial accident investigator. He moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he worked for Hughes Aircraft.
He enjoyed reading.
Survivors include a brother, David Whelan of San Francisco, Calif.; five nephews; and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, Meinrada and Augustine; a brother, James Whelan; and a sister, Dorothy Whelan.
No memorial service is planned. Bateman Funeral Home of Newport is handling the arrangements.

Mary Duryea Decker

Mary Duryea Decker, 76, of Otis died July 12, 2004, in Portland.
She was born March 17, 1928, in Portland to Lois and Dr. Oliver Nisbet.
She received a bachelor of arts degree in speech and sociology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and a master of arts degree in speech with an emphasis on education from Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.
She married Richard Duryea in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1958.
She was a member of the dean's staff at Stanford University, then worked as dean of students at Scripps College and as assistant vice provost for student affairs at the University of California at San Diego.
She married Edward A. Decker in 1967.
She retired as dean of students for the San Diego Community College District.
Following retirement, she worked as project manager for the combined case management project of the Lincoln County Department of Health and Human Services.
She was a former president of the board at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City.
She lived in Portland for the past year.
She served on the board of trustees at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.
She was a former member of the Area Health Education Council and the Governor's Drug and Alcohol Task Force.
Survivors include her husband, Edward; a daughter, Maria Duryea; and a sister, Lois Nisbet. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Congregational Church of Lincoln City, 1760 NW 25th St. The Rev. Charles Busch will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Health and Science University Foundation, 1121 SW Salmon St., Suite 200, Portland, Ore. 97205-2021 or to the medical education fund of the North Lincoln Hospital Foundation, PO Box 767, Lincoln City, Ore. 97367.
