Richard H. Mock
Richard H. Mock, 27, of Bend, formerly of Medford and La Pine, died Saturday (Nov. 2, 2002) near Concrete, Wash., as the result of an automobile accident. No service is planned.

He was born Jan. 16, 1975, in Medford, to David and Joyce Geiser Mock. He was raised and attended school in Medford until he was a teenager, when he moved to La Pine and graduated from high school.

Mr. Mock was a reforestation technician. He had also worked in the commercial fishing industry.

He enjoyed hiking, fishing, camping, and being out in nature.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Joyce Geiser and Jim Connor, Gardiner, Mont.; a sister, Amy Lee Mock, Yakima, Wash.; and his grandmother, Dolores Geiser, Sams Valley.

Frederick James LaBarre Keith
The memorial service for Frederick James LaBarre Keith will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Rogue Valley Fellowship. Pastor Dave Booye will officiate.

Mr. Keith, 59, of Central Point, died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 2002) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Fellowship, 2373 S. Pacific Highway, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Oct. 9, 1943, in Medford, to Frederick and Vivienne (Ross) Keith. He was a direct descendent of the Jacksonville pioneer family of Col. John E. Ross. He attended grammar school in Central Point and graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1962. He held the state 440 track record for many years.

On Feb. 3, 1967, in Medford, he married Joyce E. Funk, who survives. He was a lifelong Rogue Valley resident.

Mr. Keith worked as a foreman for Hillcrest Orchards, as a rural route carrier for the Postal Service and as a sawyer for Medco Plywood, where he ran the last piece of plywood through the mill before it closed.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Mr. Keith was a member of Rogue Valley Fellowship, Rogue Valley Genealogy, and the Rogue Valley Fellowship 49ers seniors group. He was also a Little League coach.

He was an avid outdoorsman and local and family historian. He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter and his dog, Sandy.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Jeffery and Philip, both Medford; a daughter, Gina Weathers, Phoenix; his mother, Vivienne Mae Davis, Phoenix; two brothers, E.M. "Marty" Mingus II, Central Point, and Peter Keith, Eugene; four sisters, Linae Kruis, Eagle Point, Raquel Livoni, Little Rock, Ark., Rebekah "Becky" Keith, Sacramento, Calif., and Juliann Keith, Kansas City, Mo.; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Frederick "Fred" C. Keith.

Eugene James Strong
Eugene James Strong, 86, of Central Point, died Oct. 31, 2002, at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

He was born March 23, 1916, in Swatara, Minn., to James and Anna (Rodrigues) Strong. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Depression. On April 22, 1946, in Oakland, Calif., he married Amber Delia Holmes, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1980.

Mr. Strong worked as an engineer in Civil Service for 30 years at Oakland Naval Base, Oakland Army Base and retired as head civilian at Kingsley Air Force Base in Klamath Falls.

During World War II, he was a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He fought across Europe for five years, following Rommel in Egypt and landing with the Normandy invasion. After serving with the Occupation Forces in Paris, he resigned and joined the Navy and was headed for the South Pacific when the war ended.

Mr. Strong was an avid hunter and fisherman, making treks to British Columbia, and traveling on horseback in the Grand Tetons.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Linda Swink, Beaverton; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry.

Hazel Irene Rake
Hazel Irene Rake, 79, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 5, 2002) in Medford. No service is planned.

She was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Bolivar, Ohio, to Clyde and Gladys Tribby. On March 25, 1942, in Covington, Ky., she married Kenneth Rake, who preceded her in death.

Ms. Rake was a homemaker.

She enjoyed doing stained glass projects and spending time with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Rene Bailey, Medford; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

Audrey Fern Rightmier
The memorial service for Audrey Fern Rightmier will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eastwood Baptist Church in Medford. Pastor George Nye will officiate.
Mrs. Rightmier, 86, of Medford, died Oct. 30, 2002, at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born May 13, 1916, in Santa Ana, Calif., to Herman and Erma Roberson. On Nov. 28, 1933, in Modesto, Calif., she married William Jess Rightmier, who died in 1996. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1950 from Bellflower, Calif.

Mrs. Rightmier worked as a cook and a waitress in the 1950s, in addition to being a homemaker.

She enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling to British Columbia.

Survivors include a son, Bill, Medford; five daughters, Eunice Arlene Steele, Winston, Rosalie Ruddick, Tenmile, Kathy Higday, Medford, Aloha Smith, Trail, and Erma Jean Rush, in Texas; 23 grandchildren; 36 great- grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Fern Fous; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

John Wesley Lick
The memorial service for John Wesley Lick will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford.

Mr. Lick, 57, of Medford, died Oct. 31, 2002, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

He was born June 7, 1945, in Los Angeles, to James and Ida Lick.

Palma Elaine Bartlett
The memorial service for Palma Elaine (Shaw) Bartlett will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Shady Cove. A second service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bronleewe-Bass Mortuary in Hillsboro. Inurnment will be in Fir Lawn cemetery in Hillsboro.

Mrs. Bartlett, 65, of Shady Cove, died Friday (Nov. 1, 2002) at her home.

She was born April 14, 1937, in Oregon City, to Leonard and Olive Shaw.

Mrs. Bartlett was a medical transcriptionist.

She was a Jehovah’s Witness.

Mrs. Bartlett enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Peck, Banks, and Brian Peck, Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Ruth Nelson, Vancouver, Wash.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Peck.

Annetta Margaret Curtis
The funeral for Annetta Margaret Curtis will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. Entombment will be in Sunrise Court at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Curtis, 94, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 5, 2002) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Gospel Mission, 125 W. Jackson St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born June 6, 1908, in Mankato, Minn., to Frank and Bertha (Scheiding) Buschena. On June 1, 1926, in Waukegan, Ill., she married Basil G. Curtis, who died in 1976. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947 from Glendale, Calif.

Mrs. Curtis was a homemaker.

She was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church in Medford and a volunteer for the Talent Loaves and Fishes program for seven years.

Survivors include a daughter, Lola J. Leaming, Medford; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters.

Geraldine A. Thomas
The graveside service for Geraldine A. Thomas will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. Pastor Russ Millsaps will officiate.

Ms. Thomas, 84, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday (Nov. 5, 2002) at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Oct. 15, 1918, in Kalama, Wash. She moved to Grants Pass 45 years ago from Eugene. She received a master’s degree from what is now Southern Oregon University.

Ms. Thomas was a substitute teacher at Grants Pass High School and Fleming Middle School from 1971 until 1978. She was the co-owner and operator of Beaver State Realty and worked as a Realtor.

She enjoyed painting in both oil and watercolor, travel, photography and clam digging and crabbing.

Survivors include a daughter, Manya Beatty, Phoenix; two sons, Dennis Scofield, Central Point, and Jim Sulewski, Tacoma, Wash.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Scofield.

Arrangements: Southern Oregon Cremation Services, Grants Pass.

Marvin Gilbert Wick
The funeral for Marvin Gilbert Wick will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mr. Wick, 91, of Medford, died Wednesday (Nov. 6, 2002) at Three Fountains Care Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1311 N.W. 21st Ave., Portland, OR 97209, or Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Nov. 10, 1910, in Tucson, Ariz., the only child of Oscar Gilbert Wick and Edna May Putney Wick Pursel. He moved to Medford with his mother in 1912. He attended Medford schools and played football at Medford High School. He finished high school at Benson Tech. in Portland. After high school, he served an apprenticeship with Southern Pacific Railroad in Portland.

On Nov. 7, 1935, in Medford, he married Phyllis May Turpin, a third generation resident of the Rogue Valley.

Mr. Wick worked for Southern Pacific Railroad in Portland, Eugene and Vancouver, Wash., through World War II. He moved to Medford in 1946, and worked as a boiler maker for Southern Pacific Railroad in Ashland, owned an automobile repair shop for a time with his cousin, Maurice Putney, then spent the rest of his working life in the dairy business. He was the Jackson County milk inspector, and later worked at several local dairies.

He retired in 1980 at age 70, and spent time with his wife, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 42. She died in 1991, two months before her 76th birthday.

Mr. Wick was a member of the United Methodist Church and Griffin Creek Grange.

He enjoyed taking trips to the Oregon Coast with his wife, football, ballroom dancing and animals.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet Maye Hawkins and Joan Annette Ellis, both Medford, and Jerri Ellen Eby, Puyallup, Wash.; a son, Larry, Aloha; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren.

John ‘Jack’ L. Fox
John "Jack" L. Fox, 77, of Medford, died Monday (Nov. 4, 2002) at his home. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Art Gallery, 320 Middleford Alley, Medford.

He was born July 29, 1925, in Campbell, Calif., to John and Mayfield Fox. On Aug. 23, 1953, he married Nancy Rose Robertson, who survives. They raised a family in Monterey, Calif., and moved to the Rogue Valley in 1977.

Mr. Fox was an auto mechanic. He was on the board of the Automotive Service Council of California. He was a leader in the perfection and quality of auto repair and was instrumental in developing the licensing of auto mechanics. He worked in various auto dealerships on the Monterey Peninsula, as well as a short period in Klamath Falls.

In 1964, he and his wife opened Jack Fox Auto Service. They sold the business in 1977 and moved to Shady Cove. They then established and operated Rogue Auto Parts and Machine Shop until 1988, when they moved to Medford, and he opened Jack Fox Carburetor Service, which he operated until his death.

He was a volunteer for Fire District No. 4, was on the Shady Cove City Planning Commission and City Council and was interim mayor of Shady Cove.

Mr. Fox enjoyed fishing and golfing. At age 60 he took a renewed interest in watercolors and became proficient in realistic painting. He received many ribbons and awards over the years. He was a member of the Oregon Watercolor Society and Southern Oregon Society of Artists.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline "Popi" Hudson, Marina, Calif.; two sons, John C., Mount Shasta, Calif., and Stephen, Carmel Valley, Calif.; a sister, Frances Fox, Monterey, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Betty Sue Turner
The memorial service for Betty Sue Turner will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Applegate Community Church. The Rev. Kurt Krowel will officiate. Interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mrs. Turner, 71, of Applegate, died Tuesday (Nov. 5, 2002) at her home.

She was born May 16, 1931, in Bennington, Okla., to Dee and Mabel Cox. On Jan. 31, 1952, in Las Vegas, she married Troy Turner, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 29 years ago from Bakersfield, Calif.

Mrs. Turner worked for the Kern County School District in Bakersfield, Calif., as a special education aide and bus driver. She also worked as a waitress at the Applegate Cafe until her retirement in 2000.

She enjoyed community socializing and an occasional visit to Seven Feathers Casino.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Debby Soltis, Medford; two sons, Steve, Grants Pass, and Troy D., Stayton; a brother, Harold Cox, Bakersfield, Calif.; a twin sister, Bonnie Burkett, Shady Cove; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
