Meredith Florence Nicoletto
The memorial service for Meredith Florence Nicoletto will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Central Point.

Mrs. Nicoletto, 63, of Central Point, died Saturday (Sept. 14, 2002) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 456 W. Pine St., Central Point, OR 97502.

She was born May 2, 1939, in Santa Cruz, Calif., to Harold and Dorothy Whitestine. She attended Provolt School, and after it closed, she attended Murphy School. She graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1957.

On Feb. 26, 1960, in Sunnyvale, Calif., she married Marvin Nicoletto, who survives. They moved to Medford in 1963 from Sunnyvale, Calif., and shortly after moved to Central Point.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mrs. Nicoletto worked as a math aide in the wind tunnel at Ames Research Center, NASA, at Moffett Field, Calif. After moving to the Rogue Valley, she worked in the computer center for Medpac, and for several years in the office at Cascade Wood Products. In 1979, she began working at Conger-Morris Funeral Home, where she was the bookkeeper/office manager until her death.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Central Point. She had also been involved with Jackson County Home Extension and was a 4-H leader during the 1980s.

Mrs. Nicoletto enjoyed reading and sewing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Susana, Shady Cove, and Heather, Bellevue, Wash.; two sisters, Mary Jean Watts, Williams, and Patricia Elms-Whitehead, Meadow Vista, Calif.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Hertha Marie Wahler
The funeral service for Hertha Marie Wahler will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Beulah, N.D. The graveside service will follow at Zion Lutheran cemetery in Beulah, N.D. Pastor Kris Nyman will officiate. A luncheon will follow at the church.

Mrs. Wahler, 86, of Central Point, died Friday (Sept. 13, 2002) at a foster care home in Central Point.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2860 State St., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born June 12, 1916, in Beulah, N.D., to Ludwig and Selome (Erdman) Sailer. In December 1935, in Beulah, N.D., she married William Wahler, who died in 1983.

Mrs. Wahler was a homemaker and a member of the Lutheran church. She moved to Central Point in 1999 from North Dakota to be near family. She had also lived in California.

She enjoyed sewing and cooking, reading, gardening and singing in the senior choir.

Survivors include three daughters, Arliss Ellis, Central Point, Rose Glazebrook, Orange, Calif., and Selma Persico, in California; a son, William, Portland; three sisters, Lorraine Mohl, Mandan, N.D., Arvada Schramm and Florence Sailer, both Bismarck, N.D.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Seibel Funeral Home in Beulah, N.D.

Margaret Cowles
The memorial service for June Margaret Cowles will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at 18881 Highway 62, Eagle Point. Pastors Chris White and Matthew McAuliffe of Trail Christian Fellowship will officiate.

Ms. Cowles, 73, of Medford, died Aug. 12, 2002, at a Medford foster home.

She was born June 26, 1929, in Overland, Mo., to George and Hilda Hawley. In Wenatchee, Wash., she married Wilbur "Red" Cowles. They later divorced.

Ms. Cowles was a mother and a department store sales clerk.

She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, reading and movies.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Garbert, Phoenix; a son, Bruce, Los Angeles; a sister, Barbara Gilliam, Jefferson City, Mo.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, G. Bruce Hawley, James Hawley and Eugene Hawley.

Virginia ‘Ginnie’ Salmond
The memorial service for Virginia Mae "Ginnie" Salmond will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, Ashland. The Rev. Anthony Schultz will officiate.

Mrs. Salmond, 80, of Ashland, died Thursday (Sept. 12, 2002) at her home.

Edmund Ludwig
The funeral Mass for Edmund Joseph Ludwig will be held today at Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church.

Mr. Ludwig, 82, of Central Point, died Friday (Sept. 13, 2002) at his home.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Teacher-activist Breceda dies
YREKA, Calif. — Former Montague mayor, longtime school employee and community activist Gene Breceda, 72, died Friday (Sept. 13, 2002) at his home.

Mr. Breceda, who was a paraplegic as the result of an accident in 1961, overcame his disability to earn a master’s degree, to work 27 years as a teacher and counselor at Yreka High School and to serve as a council member and mayor on the City Council.

The funeral for Mr. Breceda will be at 3:30 p.m. today at the Yreka High School gymnasium. Interment will follow at Hornbrook/Henley cemetery. A reception will follow at the Breceda home east of Yreka.

He was born June 26, 1930, in Algoma, Ore., and was raised in Hornbrook, Calif., attending the local schools and graduating from Yreka High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, including two tours in Korea. Following military service, he earned a teaching credential from Southern Oregon University.

Mr. Breceda taught at Montague Elementary School. In 1961, he had an accident that left him a paraplegic. He returned to Southern Oregon and began work on a master’s degree in education, graduating in 1969. In 1973, he and his wife, Suzanne, moved to acreage south of Montague, Calif. They celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary on June 21, 2002.

Mr. Breceda eventually transferred to Yreka High School, where he worked for 27 years, 12 years as a counselor and 15 years as a social studies teacher. He retired from the high school in 1992, but returned as the principal for half a year in 1996. The Class of 1999 honored him as their graduation speaker.

He served on the Montague City Council for eight years and two years as mayor. He was also a member of the Shasta Valley Community Club, serving as president for five years. While on the council, he served as chairman of the Montague Airport and the Yreka/Industrial committees.

He was also part of the group that constructed the local swimming pool, and he worked on the reconstruction of the Montague rodeo grounds in 1963. He emceed the Shasta Valley Community Club Variety Show for many years, in addition to announcing the Montague Junior. Rodeo Parade for the past 10 years.

During his retirement, Mr. Breceda served as president of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Posse for five years; had served on the board of the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden since its inception; with the Masons as grand master of Howard Lodge No. 29 in 2000; and as club president and district lieutenant governor of the Weed/Lake Shastina Kiwanis. He was also involved with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars; American Legion, Marine Corps League, AMVETs Club and Siskiyou County Veterans Advisory Board. He was the military support person for the American Red Cross, Elks scholarship chairman and president of the California Retired Teachers Association for several years.

Mr. Breceda was an avid horseman until his accident in 1961, and owned several quarter horses. He also enjoyed deer hunting with family and friends and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne; two sons, Gordon, Grenada, and Milton, Montague; his mother, Vera Breceda, Yreka; three grandsons; and three stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry.

Friends may pay their respects from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Girdner Funeral Chapel, Yreka.

Catherine Jane Mooster
The memorial service for Catherine Jane Mooster will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church in Central Point. Rosary will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the church prior to the memorial service.

Mrs. Mooster, 87, of Medford, died Wednesday (Sept. 14, 2002).

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1660 E. McAndrews Road, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Catherine Jane Baker on Dec. 30, 1914, in Virginia, Minn., a daughter of Roy M. and Jessie I. Baker.

She graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, with a degree in education. On April 12, 1941, in Hibbing, Minn., she married Stanley T. Mooster, who died in March 2002.

She worked as a nursery school teacher. She had lived in the Rogue Valley since 1957, moving here from Newport.

She enjoyed painting, writing poetry, and crocheting afghans, which she donated to charitable organizations.

She attended Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Elbert, Central Point; two sons, Jonathan, Medford, and Terry, Arizona; two sisters, Virginia Rudstrom and Roberta Johnson, both in Minnesota; two brothers, Ralph and Jack Baker, also in Minnesota, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Former Medford principal, coach ‘Gabby’ Williams dies
Former Medford Senior High School principal and American Legion Mustang coach Robert Harry "Gabby" Williams died Saturday (Sept. 14, 2002) in Medford of age-related causes. He was 79.
A private service is planned.

He was born April 5, 1923, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to Robert Ernest and Frances Neumeyer Williams.

When he and his siblings were orphaned, his Lewiston, Idaho, high school coach, Duncan Branom, mentored his future success as an athlete and teacher.

Mr. Williams played professional baseball for West Coast minor league teams for nearly a decade after serving with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He retired from professional baseball as a player and manager of the Lewiston, Idaho Broncs. When he retired from baseball, the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce in Idaho hosted Gabby Williams Night and awarded the Distinguished Service Award, Man of the Year and the Nez Perce tribe named him an honorary chief for his work with youngsters.

Mr. Williams’ lifelong interest in sports led him to coaching, and his baseball and football teams in Idaho and Oregon posted impressive winning records. He taught and coached at Lapwai, Wallace and Lewiston high schools in Idaho.

After moving to Oregon in 1959, Mr. Williams coached and became the administrator at Klamath Union High School in Klamath Falls. His son, Robert, was among the list of outstanding American Legion baseball athletes he coached to state titles.

He moved to Medford in 1967. On Dec. 31, 1973, he married Barbara Gray, who survives.

In Medford, Mr. Williams coached the Mustang American Legion team for a decade and was principal of Medford Senior High School from 1968 until his retirement in 1985.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Robert, Elk Grove, Calif.; four daughters, Patricia Turley, Junction City, Ann Marie Navarrette, Beaverton, Brenda Schuhmacher, Kennewick, Wash., and Janet Ballantyne of Tualatin; two stepchildren, Stacy Gray and Steve Gray, both Portland; a sister, Berniece Garjo, Nashua, Mont.; two brothers, Frank, Elk, Wash., and Leonard, Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Dorothy E. Young
The memorial service for Dorothy E. Young will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Camelot Village Recreation Hall, 3700 Babcock Lane, Eugene.

Mrs. Young, 82, of Eugene, formerly of Medford, died Sunday (Sept. 15, 2002).

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendly Street Church of God Youth Groups, 2290 Friendly St., Eugene, OR 97405.

She was born Aug. 9, 1920, in Klamath Falls, to Louis and Mayme (Johnson) Jenkins. She graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1938. On June 30, 1946, in Reno, Nev., she married Warren H. Young, who survives.

Mrs. Young had been employed with Woolworth’s and Shoppers Market. She lived in Tulsa, Seattle, Medford, Swisshome and Eugene.

She was a member of the "Daisy Ducks" Iota Beta Sorority, was a Job’s Daughters past honored queen and was a member of Friendly Street Church of God.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Sandra Wade and Linda Witt, both Eugene; a son, Ron, Salem; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: England’s Eugene Memorial Chapel.

Leo L. Taylor
The memorial service for Leo L. Taylor will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rogue Valley Manor Auditorium.

Mr. Taylor, 89, of Medford, died Saturday (Sept. 14, 2002) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Manor Foundation, 1200 Mira Mar Ave., Medford, OR 97504, or the First United Methodist Church, 607 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born June 4, 1913, in Auburn, Wash., to Leo and Laura Taylor. He graduated from high school in Winterset, Iowa, and attended Simpson College in Ames, Iowa. He lived on a farm near Lamar, Colo., for nine years. He moved to Phoenix in 1933 from Iowa, then lived in California for 18 years.

On Dec. 19, 1940, in Berkeley, Calif., he married Helen L. Power, who survives.

In California, Mr. Taylor worked as a power plant operator and dispatcher. The office was transferred to Medford in 1954 and he worked as a dispatcher at Lone Pine Sub Station for 22 years. He retired as chief dispatcher in 1976.

He was a past president of the Electrical Workers Union. He was active in Boy Scouts as an assistant scout master, then as head of the Explorer Scouts for the Methodist Church. He was a member of PacifiCorp Quarter Century Club and participated in Project Misdemeanant. He was also a member and past president of Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral Inc., and started the lapidary shop at Rogue Valley Manor.

Mr. Taylor enjoyed hiking and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Marilyn Taylor, San Antonio; two sons, Melvin, Eugene, and Wayne, Fullerton, Calif.; a brother, Oliver P., Medford; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde; and a sister, Margaret Montgomery.

Elmer Oscar Lee
The graveside service for Elmer Oscar Lee will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery, with military honors provided by the Honor Guard.

Mr. Lee, 78, of Rogue River, died Saturday (Sept. 14, 2002) at Royale Gardens Health Care Facility.

He was born March 11, 1924, in Willow Springs, Mo., On Feb. 20, 1952, in Seguin, Texas, he married Rebecca Alvarez. They later divorced. She died in 1990. On Jan. 25, 1968, in Fort Stockton, Texas, he married Theresia Hornung, who died in 2000.

Mr. Lee worked for Allied Van Lines in Texas, and owned and operated Four Season Pool Service in California. He retired in 1990 and moved to Rogue River from Palm Desert, Calif.

He enjoyed gardening and playing cards.

Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca Lee Guerra, San Antonio; five brothers, Robert, Vinton, Iowa, Everett, Independence, Mo., Harry, Temple, Texas, Dale, Benton, Kan., and George, Lawndale, Okla.; three sisters, Nellie Richards and Louisa Wheeler, both Houston, Mo., and Irene Rainey, Fulton, Mo.; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Henry, Isaac and Irvwin Lee; and three sisters, Mary Grogan, Thelma Wheeler and Betsy Grogan.
