Blaine Frederick Hammerly
Blaine Frederick Hammerly, 44, of Central Point, died Sept. 11, 2002, at his home. The memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association, 6915 S.W. Macadam, Suite 130, Portland, OR 97219.

He was born May 16, 1958, in Everett, Wash., to Dennis and Deloris (Wells) Hammerly. He moved to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago from California.

Mr. Hammerly was a long-distance freight driver.

Survivors include two stepchildren, Danni and Derek, both Central Point; his mother and stepfather, Bob and Deloris Nims, Clovis, Calif.; a brother, Mike Nims, Fresno, Calif.; and two sisters, Dawn O’Rourke, McKinleyville, Calif., and Jodi Ekelund, Redding, Calif.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Robert Joseph Edell
The memorial service for Robert Joseph Edell will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at 2141 Brookhurst Ave., Medford. Bishop Frank Sybrant of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Medford 3rd Ward, will officiate. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Edell, 80, of Medford, died Wednesday (Sept. 25, 2002) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

He was born March 10, 1922, in Bridgeport, Conn., to Benjimen and Dorothy Edell. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1975 from California. On Feb. 14, 1991, in Medford, he married Doris E. Phipps, who survives.

Mr. Edell was a grocery retail clerk. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Edell was a member of the LDS Church, Medford 3rd Ward.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Richard, Los Angeles, and Jeffrey, San Jose, Calif.; two brothers, Bernard, Union City, Calif., and Albert, Jenner, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Lydia Sophia Helkey
Lydia Sophia Helkey, 91, of Medford, died Monday (Sept. 23, 2002) in Medford. The graveside service was held at Deschutes Memorial Gardens.

She was born Lydia Hoeffner on Feb. 9, 1911, in Custer City, Okla. On March 6, 1932, in Campo, Colo., she married Carl Helkey, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Helkey was a homemaker. She was a member of the 4th Avenue Baptist Church in Redmond.

Mrs. Helkey enjoyed her family, church, reading and crocheting.

Survivors include three sons, Arthur C., Logsten, John G. Lowell, and David D., Port Angeles, Wash.; three daughters, Margaret M. Easterbrook and Lorene L. McCormick, both Medford, and Darlene J. Uhden, Maupin; and three sisters, Polda Stagner, in Colorado, Eda Wiest, and Clara Mills, Corvallis.

Arrangements: Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home.

Leonard F. Johnson
The graveside service for Leonard F. Johnson will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Eagle Point National cemetery. The Rev. Bunny Oliver will officiate.

Mr. Johnson, 75, of Medford, died Tuesday (Sept. 24, 2002) at Skylark Assisted Living in Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Jan. 16, 1927, in Billings, Mont. He lived in Ashland from 1946 to 1978, and in Medford since 1979. On June 11, 1950, he married Betty A. Stebler, who died in 1992.

Mr. Johnson was a truck driver with Liningers (LTM), retiring in 1989.

He served as a private first class in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Johnson enjoyed hunting, fishing and lapidary.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Lorensen, Bend; a son, Brian Johnson, Beaverton; a brother, Wayne, Eugene; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A son, Bruce L., preceded him in death.

Phyllis Garrison
Phyllis Garrison, 67, of Vancouver, Wash., formerly of Medford, died Sept. 19, 2002, at a care center in Vancouver. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1311 N.W. 21st Ave., Portland, OR 97209.

She was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Bellingham, Wash. She married Kenneth Garrison Sr., who died in 1999.

Mrs. Garrison retired from US West in 1990. She lived in Medford for 30 years.

She was a seamstress and avid reader. She enjoyed traveling and visiting with friends.

Survivors include a son, Ken, Vancouver.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Davies Cremation and Burial Service, Vancouver, Wash.

Evelyn M. Chase Connors
Evelyn M. Chase Connors, 90, of Medford, died Sunday (Sept. 22, 2002) at her home. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

She was born March 13, 1912, in Portland, to William Murray and May Emma Chase. She graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology in Portland. In 1937, in Portland, she married Paul Golden.

They moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1947. They later divorced. In 1970, in San Mateo, Calif., she married James Connors, who died in 1989.

Mrs. Connors was a statistician for the Oregonian. She also worked as an administrative assistant for the San Mateo County Coroners Division, retiring in 1972. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1974 from San Mateo, Calif.

She was a member of the Rogue Valley Country Club and the Medford Elks Club.

Mrs. Connors was an avid golfer and bridge player.

Survivors include a daughter, Corinne Bentley, Junction City; a son, Douglas Patrick Golden, Palm Springs, Calif.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands.

William Gearhart
The memorial service for the Rev. William Warren Gearhart will be at 3 p.m. today (Sept. 22, 2002) at Rogue Valley Manor. The Rev. Gearhart, 89, of Medford, died Friday at Rogue Valley Manor’s Health Center.

He was born March 23, 1913, in Portland, a son of George and Olive Gearhart. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon in 1935 and graduated from the McCormach Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1938. In 1937, he was a delegate to a church conference in London that was a forerunner of the World Council of Churches that took shape after World War II.

In June of 1939, he married Lucile Shackelford, who survives. In 1940 the couple were posted at the Friendly House Community Center under the auspices of the First Presbyterian Church of Portland. The Rev. Gearhart became pastor of the Moro Presbyterian Church in Moro in 1948, and there developed a love of fishing.

The couple served churches in Ojai, Calif., beginning in 1952, Grants Pass in 1963, and Esparto, Calif., from which he retired in 1974. The couple lived near Merlin until moving to the Manor in 1993.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons, George and John Gearhart; a brother, Richard Gearhart, of Tallahassee, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nansi Jane Price; and a brother.

Helen Tharp
A private service has been held for Helen Mauretta-Sanders Tharp. Ms. Tharp, 76, of Central Point, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2002) at her home. Interment will be at Kadesh Chapel cemetery, Wellsburg, W.Va.

Ms. Tharp was born Dec. 16, 1925, in Beech Bottom, W.Va., a daughter of Walter B. and Nellie M. Sanders. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1981 from Wellsburg, W.Va.

Ms. Tharp was a press operator for Eagle Manufacturing in Wellsburg. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping.

Surviving are a daughter, Madaeline Smith, of Central Point; two sisters, Eileen Lemasters, of Wellsburg, W. Va., and Vivian Ennis, of Freeman, W.Va., four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Orrie Sanders, in 1944.

Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives was in charge of arrangements.

Susie Lanfear
The memorial service for Susie Lanfear will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Table Rock Fellowship in Medford. The Rev. Tom Sabens will officiate.

Mrs. Lanfear, 55, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Sept. 18, 2002) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Table Rock Fellowship Building Fund, 3610 N. Pacific Highway, Medford, OR 97501, or Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born July 19, 1947, in Lafayette, Ind. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1977 from Pleasanton, Calif. On Aug. 13, 1993, in Grants Pass, she married Cal Lanfear, who survives.

Mrs. Lanfear had worked for Windermere Van Vleet Real Estate since 1995. Prior to that, she worked for Black Oak Pharmacy from 1985 to 1994.

She was president of the Cancer Society and Ostomy Society during the 1980s. She was also an organizer for Cropwalkers, a Christian Rural Overseas Program during the 1980s. She was an advocate for the Plan International adoption program.

Mrs. Lanfear enjoyed caring for her family, gardening, cooking and music.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Russ Bohall, Portland; a daughter, Brie Mahar, Phoenix; her mother, Grace Shipley, Jacksonville; and her father, Rex Kepler, Lafayette, Ind.

Jack Kendrick Massie
Jack Kendrick Massie, 82, of Medford, died Tuesday (Sept. 17, 2002) at Three Fountains Nursing Center in Medford. A private service will be held. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

He was born May 18, 1920, in Sundance, Wyo., to Carl and Bernice Massie. He graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1938. On April 17, 1945, in Miami, he married Marcie Chrystell Stoddard, who survives.

Mr. Massie served in the U.S. Air Force for 32 years, achieving the rank of colonel. During World War II, he flew combat missions in a Martin B-26 with the 27th Bomb Squadron, 17th Air Force. During the Vietnam War, he flew the C-123K. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1975.

He was a member of The Retired Officers Association (TROA), and the Air Force Association (AFA).

Mr. Massie enjoyed and was extremely active in politics.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Jack K. II, Harbor City, Calif.; two daughters, Susan C. Jones, Tempe, Ariz., and Deborah A. Massie, Bellevue, Wash.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Mary E. Hoxie
A memorial service for Mary E. Hoxie will take place at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Ashland. Inurnment will follow at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St., Ashland, OR 97520; or the Ashland Public Library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, OR 97520.

Mrs. Hoxie, 88, of Ashland, died Thursday (Aug. 8, 2002) at the Ashland Community Hospital.

She was born Dec. 11, 1913, at Starbuck, Manitoba, in Canada, the daughter of Elta and Walter Herbert. The family moved to Ashland in 1926, where Mrs. Hoxie attended the local grade school, junior high and graduated from Ashland High School in 1932. She was an alumnus of Southern Oregon Normal School.

From 1936 to 1938 Mrs. Hoxie worked as a secretary for the Ashland city attorney.

On June 5, 1938, in Ashland, she married Wesley V. Hoxie, who survives. The couple lived in Copco for several years and later moved to San Carlos. The couple returned to Ashland in 1974 after Mr. Hoxie retired.

Mrs. Hoxie was an active volunteer with Red Cross, Campfire Girls, Tudor Guild of the Ashland Shakespeare Theater and Linda Vista Care Center.

She was a member of the Fortnightly Study Club, First United Methodist Church and Ashland Senior Citizens Club.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Phillip Hoxie, Murphys, Calif., and Jack E. Hoxie, Redmond; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother.

Funeral arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Mary Eakin
No service will be held for Mary Madeline Eakin. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Eakin, 91, of Medford, died Thursday (Aug. 8, 2002) at Medford Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Mary McCarty on Nov. 6, 1910, in Pasadena, Calif. On Feb. 26, 1960, in Anchorage, Alaska, she married William Floyd Eakin, who died in 1999.

She was a homemaker, living in the Rogue Valley since 1972.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens, Medford.

Ralph Newman Jr.
A private family service was held for Ralph Newman Jr. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Newman, 57, of Medford, died Thursday (Aug. 8, 2002) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Hospice Foundation, 111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504 or the Oregon Cancer Society, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Sept. 22, 1944, in Yreka, Calif. He had lived in the Rogue Valley for one-and-a-half years after moving from Longview, Wash.

A machinist and maintenance supervisor at an Alcoa plant for 30 years, he enjoyed traveling, boating and fly-fishing.

Survivors include a son, Scott Newman, Seattle; a daughter, Teresa Lynn Wika, Longview; his mother, Rosezella Hall, Medford; two brothers, Rodney Newman, Central Point, and Claude Newman, Medford; three sisters, Maxine Adams, Carolyn Hammer and Dorothy Nienow, all of Medford; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens, Medford.
