James Wilford Hodgson
The graveside service for James Wilford Hodgson will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Hodgson, 94, of Medford, died Saturday (June 29, 2002) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Applegate Christian Fellowship, 7380 Highway 238, Jacksonville, OR 97530.

He was born June 24, 1908, in Phoenix, near Coleman Creek, to Thomas and Mabel Hodgson. On Sept. 10, 1929, in Roseburg, he married Lois Pearl Powel, who survives. They celebrated their 72nd anniversary on Sept. 10, 2001.

Mr. Hodgson worked in Rogue Valley saw mills until he retired. He lived in the Rogue Valley all his life.

He was a member of Applegate Christian Fellowship.

Mr. Hodgson enjoyed clam digging, fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Janet Denise Sneed, Medford, and Meldene Jeanette Phillips, Kelso, Wash.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Friends may pay their respects from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

John Raymond Sanders
The memorial service for John Raymond Sanders will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at the home of Bob and Melissa Damon, 15882 Antioch Road, White City. Interment will be at 1 p.m. today at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Mr. Sanders, 89, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (June 27, 2002) at Three Rivers Hospital in Grants Pass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the John R. Sanders Scholarship Fund for a University of Oregon scholarship, 15882 Antioch Road, White City, OR 97503.

He was born March 26, 1913, in Portland, to John and Blanche Sanders. The family moved to Portland from a logging camp in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon for his birth. The oldest of five children, he grew up in the logging industry. When his father died in 1925, he and his brother, Caleb, began working as farm hands while continuing school in Muddy Creek.

Mr. Sanders joined the U.S. Marines in 1934, returned to Oregon in 1939, and worked at logging, farming and tavern keeping in Oregon and Washington. He and his brother Caleb owned Forest Beach Tavern on the shores of Hood Canal in Washington until they were called to service during World War II.

Mr. Sanders rejoined the Marines in 1942 and was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, where he met and married Alexandra Morrison, who preceded him in death. He ended his career in the Marines after 25 years with the rank of master sergeant. He worked for the Department of Agriculture in Rapid City, S.D., for several years before returning to Oregon, where he lived in the Corvallis area and worked for Oregon State University.

After the death of his first wife, he married Betty Schaeffer and they moved to Milton-Freewater. She preceded him in death. He then married Sevilla Lozier and they moved to Grants Pass in 1991. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Sanders was active in the Russian Orthodox Church in Rogue River.

Michael Cordier
A celebration of the life of Michael Cordier will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mountain View cemetery in Ashland.

Mr. Cordier, 36, of Glendora, Calif., formerly of Phoenix, died July 4, 2001, in Glendora, Calif.

Judith E. Fisher
A celebration of life service for Judith E. Fisher will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at 13555 Agate Road, Eagle Point.

Mrs. Fisher, 95, of Medford, died May 21, 2002, at Eagle Cove Assisted Living Community.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1660 E. McAndrews Road, Medford, OR 97504.

Mrs. Fisher was born on July 23, 1906, in Sweden. On May 18, 1927, in Medford, she married William Henry Fisher, who preceded her in death.

Together, the Fishers operated the Talk of the Town restaurant at the airport.

She was a member of the Eastern Star for more than 60 years. She was also a member of the Central Point Grange for close to 70 years and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed baking cookies.

She is survived by two sons, Robert L. and John W., both Eagle Point; a daughter, Ruth B. Clark, Philomath; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Robert William Short
Robert William Short, 47, of Central Point, died Friday (May 24, 2002) at Medford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Medford.

Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives is in charge of arrangements.

Lee William Welch
Lee William Welch, 72, of Medford, died Friday (May 24, 2002) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A gathering of family and friends is planned this week at Eagle Point National cemetery.

He was born Nov. 24, 1929, to Ralph Albert and Mabel Alice Norris Welch in Cottage Grove. On April 24, 1966, in State Line, Nev., he married Louise Thompson, who died in April.

He served in the U.S. Army and worked in property management.

He is survived by five daughters, Karen Congdon, Medford, Patricia Broussard, Weed, Calif., Nancy Weibel, Mobile, Ala., Patti Cline, Everett, Wash., and Terri Ogden, Salt Lake City; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral of Medford.

Charles A. ‘Pete’ Bishop
A graveside service for Charles A. "Pete" Bishop will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Bishop, 77, died Friday (May 24, 2002) at his home in Eagle Point.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born May 23, 1925, in Mesa, Ariz. He lived in Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas and California before settling in Oregon during the 1940s. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Coos Bay in 1972.

In August 1949, he married Billie Stinson, who survives.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1950 on the USS Lindenwald, USS Henrico, USS Bingham, USS Bairoke and USS Pastores. He received the Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Area Campaign Medal, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, ETO Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.

Mr. Bishop worked as a truck driver hauling logs, and later for Timber Products. After his first retirement, he worked on logging sites for HM Logging of Eagle Point.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and his dogs, the outdoors and a good joke.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, William D., Rogue River; two daughters, Charyl Ray, Medford, and Bobbie Paquette, Belfair, Wash.; two brothers, Howard, Mojave, Calif., and Bobby, in California; a sister, Mary Warner, Central Point; and eight grandchildren.

Two brothers, Doug and Neal, preceded him in death.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Home.

Patricia J. ‘Patti’ Higgins
A rosary for Patricia J. "Patti" Higgins will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris Chapel by the Rev. David Schiferl. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Carmelo Mifsud officiating.

Committal service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Garden of Honor within Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Higgins, 70, of Medford, died Friday (May 24, 2002) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504, or Rogue Valley Dialysis Patient Care Trust Fund, 2868 Creekside Circle, Medford, OR 97504.

Mrs. Higgins was born Aug. 7, 1931, in Medford to Myrle M. and Irene E. Merriman. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy, Medford, in 1950.

On Aug. 20, 1955, in Medford, she married Roland J. "R.J." Higgins, who preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 1999.

Mrs. Higgins was a homemaker. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a lab technician at Sacred Heart Hospital, Medford, and at the Corbett Building in Portland from 1958 to 1962.

She was the organist for the 7 a.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 35 years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society, Rogue Valley Country Club Women’s Nine Hole Golf Association, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority (for 50 years), Rogue Valley Chapter of the Hoo-Hoo-Ettes Club, and the Lady Elks. She also was a volunteer, fund raiser and board member for the Rogue Valley Patient Care Trust.

She donated time to the American Cancer Society, Oregon Elks Eye Clinic, the Red Cross and March of Dimes. She worked with deaf children at Rogue Hearing and Speech.

Mrs. Higgins enjoyed her family, golfing, gardening and travel.

She is survived by a daughter, Annie M. Metzger, Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Thomas Merriman Jr., Kodiak, Alaska; and a sister, Marty Phillips, Medford.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Melburn Lester Whitehead
A funeral service for Melburn Lester Whitehead will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Memory Gardens Mortuary.

Mr. Whitehead, 78, of White City, died Friday (May 24, 2002) at his home.

Mr. Whitehead was born May 14, 1924, in Lenora, Okla. On Sept. 4, 1947, in Reno, Nev., he married Carrie Tant, who died in 1990. On April 8, 1995, in Reno, Nev., he married Myrtle Casada, who survives.

He moved to the Rogue Valley from Oroville, Calif., more than 50 years ago. He worked for Med-Ply and Southwest Forest Products for many years, retiring as a mill superintendent.

He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and trips to Reno.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Randy and Terry, both Central Point; four stepdaughters, Terry Jean Davis, White City, Shara Lynn Davis, Central Point, and Christina Staten and Cindy Brooks, both Anchorage; three stepsons, Stephen and David Davis, both Anchorage, and Robert Davis, Birch Bay, Wash.; a brother, Wayne, Central Point; a sister, Pauline Hickman, Enid, Okla.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald, and a sister, Fern.

Charles Eugene Campbell
The graveside service for Charles Eugene Campbell will be at 2 p.m. today at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

His son, Charles Paul Campbell, of Shady Cove, will officiate.

Mr. Campbell, 62, of Shady Cove, died Sunday (May 26, 2002) at his home.

He was born May 31, 1939, in Gurdon, Ark., to Charles and Erma Campbell. On Sept. 17, 1960, in Bellevue, Wash., he married Sharon Williams, who survives.

Mr. Campbell was a supervisor with Montana Power for 14 years. He then worked as a consultant for Senior Technical Services in Colorado for three years before moving to the Rogue Valley.

He was a member of Day Spring Baptist Church in Bismarck, N.D., and was a past member of the Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Campbell enjoyed collecting Denver Bronco memorabilia, fishing, hunting, and his Chihuahua, Squirt.

Survivors, in addition to his wife and son, include a daughter, Lisa Campbell, Shady Cove; his parents, Charles and Erma Campbell, San Antonio; two brothers, Mike, Quincy, Mass., and Don, New Orleans; and a sister, Sandra Dralle, San Antonio. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Steven, who died in Vietnam in 1969; and a grandchild.

Sybyl Verna Squire
The cryptside service for Sybyl Verna Squire will be at 3 p.m. today at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford. Pastor Nevitt Smith, retired, of First Methodist Church in Ashland, will officiate.

Mrs. Squire, 90, of Ashland, died Tuesday (May 28, 2002) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St., Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Sybyl Stewart on Feb. 11, 1912, in Omaha, Neb. On June 12, 1959, in Reno, Nev., she married Elmer W. Squire, who died in 1989. She lived in the Rogue Valley on and off since 1929.

Mrs. Squire managed the cafeteria at Phoenix School for about 15 years.

She was a member of the Ashland Community Hospital Auxiliary and the First Methodist Church, both in Ashland.

Survivors include a son, Stewart Avery, Roseburg; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son and a daughter.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Madison Elaine Poe
The graveside service for Madison Elaine "Boo" Poe will be at 10 a.m. today at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford. Pastor Scott Simpson of Eagle Point Assembly of God will officiate.

Madison, 2-month-old daughter of Jeremy Poe and Jennifer Spielbusch of Eagle Point, died Sunday (May 26, 2002).

She was born March 19, 2002.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include two sisters, Kristen and Marissa Spielbusch; her paternal grandparents, Mike and Jean Turner; her paternal grandfather, LeRoy Poe; her maternal grandparents, Roger and Doni Bigham; her great-grandparents, Don and Ruthie Burrill; and her great- grandmother, Eleanor Nelson. She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Rev. Ray Nelson.
