Suzanne M. ‘Chelye’ Schuetze
The memorial service for Suzanne Michele "Chelye" Schuetze will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Warm Hearts Ranch, 302 W. Hilltop Road, Talent.

Ms. Schuetze, 40, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday (May 28, 2002) in Portland.

Memorial contributions may be made to any women’s advocacy association.

She was born March 30, 1962, in Kokomo, Ind., to Dietrich and Connye Sue (Lively) Schuetze. She graduated from San Francisco State University in 1985.

Ms. Schuetze was a sexual assault victim advocate with Asante Health Systems for two years.

She was a member of the Non-Commissioned Officer’s Association.

Survivors include two sisters, Kimberly Clausen, Grants Pass, and Jennifer Schuetze, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Arrangements: Wilhelm Funeral Home, Portland.

Dorothy J. Hilliard
Dorothy J. Hilliard, 94, of Medford, died Saturday (May 25, 2002) at Rogue Valley Manor Health Center. No local service is planned at this time. Private interment will be at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

She was born Dec. 29, 1907, in Portland, to Albert and Olive (Reed) Oatman. In September 1928, in Grants Pass, she married Walter V. Hilliard, who died in 1995.

The Hilliards owned Los Altos Television Sales and Service in Los Altos, Calif., for 15 years, until their retirement.

Mrs. Hilliard enjoyed camping, cooking, business and current events.

Survivors include two sisters, Olive Glascock, Medford, and ZoeDell Lantis Nutter, Xenia, Ohio. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Oakman Wilson; and a brother, Russell Lantis.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Claire Sorgatz
Claire Sorgatz, 74, of Talent, died Wednesday (May 29, 2002) at her home. The memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501, or Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born May 26, 1928, in Omaha, Neb., to Jesse W. and Ethel B. (Metcalf) Hibben. On Jan. 24, 1947, in Glendale, Calif., she married Kenn Sorgatz, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1990 from Orange, Calif.

Mrs. Sorgatz worked in the banking industry.

She enjoyed sewing, swimming and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Karen Thomas, Walnut, Calif., Judy Bott, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Teri Wordlow, Old Shasta, Calif.; her mother, Ethel B. Hibben, Medford; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Helen L. Thompson
Helen Lucille Thompson, 73, of Orland, Calif., formerly of Medford, died May 23 at her home. A private celebration of her life was held on May 23 at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Butte Home Hospice, 10 Constitution Drive, Chico, CA 95973.

She was born July 28, 1928, in Jacksonville, Fla., to Dorothy and Arthur Williamson. On Feb. 21, 1948, she married Neil A. Thompson, who survives. They lived in Montrose, Colo., for many years before retiring to Medford in 1996. They moved to Orland, Calif., in 2000.

Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker, mother and grandmother.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and helping others. She was known for her homemade cookies and her "special" wire hangers wrapped with colored yarn which she gave as gifts for her family and friends.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Pat Bartlett, Altoona, Wis., Eloise Whiteley, Orland, Calif., and Robin Taylor, Omak, Wash.; a son, Delmer, Orland, Calif.; a brother, David Williamson, Jacksonville, Fla. 16 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn; and a grandson.

Arrangements: The Neptune Society of Northern California, Chico, Calif.

Hoyle Dillard Medford
The funeral service for Hoyle Dillard Medford will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Chapel, Medford.

Mr. Medford, 90, of White City, died Thursday (May 30, 2002) at his daughter’s home in Shady Cove.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Fern Hazel Carothers
The memorial service for Fern Hazel Carothers will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Senior Citizens Center, Fourth and Main streets, Jacksonville.

Mrs. Carothers, 79, of Jacksonville, died May 17, 2002, at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Sarah Frances Slagle
The funeral Mass for Sarah Frances Slagle will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland. The Rev. Raymond Finnerty will officiate.

A recitation of the Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Coos Bay, at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Social Services, c/o Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, 987 Hillview Drive, Ashland, OR 97520.

Mrs. Slagle, 93, of Ashland, died Friday (May 24, 2002) at her home.

She was born June 20, 1908, at Castle Shannon, Penn., to George and Mary (Dougherty) Holmes. In 1913 her family moved to Marshfield, (now Coos Bay), where she attended Catholic school.

In 1929, she married Hollis Harold Slagle. The couple moved to North Bend, where she worked at Safeway and The Gown Shop. They moved to La Pine in 1955 to operate a motel, and later settled in the Rogue Valley, where she worked in a number of stores and restaurants, including the Medford Hotel.

She was a regular blood donor at the American Red Cross, where she contributed more than 10 gallons through the years. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, and attended Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland.

Survivors include her son, Laurence Slagle, Ashland, her daughter, Dolores Hard, North Bend; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Four sisters, two brothers, and two grandchildren preceded her in death.

Funeral arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Charles Almon Bishop
A graveside service for Charles Almon Bishop will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Eagle Point National cemetery.

He died at his home Friday (May 24, 2002).

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501.

Mr. Bishop, 77, of Eagle Point, was born May 23, 1925, in Cordell, Okla. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Coos Bay in 1948.

In 1949, he married Billie Stinson, who survives. He attended Texas Christian University and was a long-haul freight driver. He also served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1950.

Mr. Bishop enjoyed spending time with his dogs.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his son, W.D., Rogue River; two daughters, Charyl Ray, Medford, and Bobbie Paquette of Belfair, Wash.; two brothers, H.H. Bishop of Mojave, Calif., and Bobby of California; his sister, Mary Warner, Central Point; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Doug and Neil.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Home.

Carol Martin
The funeral for Carol Martin will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday (May 28, 2002) at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. The Rev. Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate.

Mrs. Martin, 57, of Gold Hill, died Saturday at her home.

She was born Dec. 28, 1944, in Blytheville, Ark., a daughter of James and Willie Mae Armstrong. She moved to Oregon in 1978 from Los Gatos, Calif. She maintained residences in the Rogue Valley and Salem until settling in Southern Oregon in 1991.

On April 17, 1983, in Mexico, she married Floyd Martin, who survives. She was a homemaker and enjoyed entertaining, gardening and traveling. She was a member of the Rogue Valley Country Club and Safari Club International.

Survivors in addition to her husband, include her mother; a son, Randy Martin, Salem; two daughters, Jamie Thomas, Eugene, and Becky Weaver, La Grande; a sister, Patsy Crump, Upper Lake, Calif.; five brothers, Franklin Armstrong, Dewitt, Ark., Charles Armstrong, Van Buren, Ark., Rick Armstrong, Santa Clara, Calif., Larry Armstrong and Wayne Armstrong, both Nice, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, a sister and a brother.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Merle L. Pierce
The graveside service for Merle L. Pierce will be at 4 p.m. today at Hillcrest Memorial Park’s Garden of Honor. Chaplain John Braund of Rogue Valley Medical Center will officiate.

Mr. Pierce, 55, of Ashland, died Wednesday (May 22, 2002) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2600 Siskiyou Blvd., Suite 100, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Sept. 4, 1946, in Alameda, Calif., to Bettye L. Sloan and Merle Pierce Sr. He lived in Medford most of his life and graduated from Medford High School in 1964. On Feb. 6, 1969, in Reno, Nev., he married Sharon Boat, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1991.

Mr. Pierce worked for Medco for 23 years.

He served as a heavy equipment mechanic in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969.

Mr. Pierce attended Ashland Christian Fellowship.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and making knives.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Robert, Sandy; three daughters, Deanna Hare and Eileen Pierce, both Medford, and Shelly Kleespies, Central Point; three brothers, Daryll Pierce, Vancouver, Wash., and Ronald and Robin Pierce, both Burns; three sisters, Sabra Hughes, Medford, Marian Swinney, Richland, Wash., and Marva Merryman, Beaverton; and nine grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Robert Warren Birch
The memorial service for Robert Warren Birch will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Central Valley Chapel in Central Point.

Mr. Birch, 61, of Phoenix, died Sunday (May 19, 2002) at his daughter’s home in Medford.

He was born Feb. 10, 1941, in Rosiclare, Ill., to William and Gladys Birch. On July 11, 1986, in Reno, Nev., he married Retta Stallsworth, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Birch was a retired chemical engineer. He moved to the Rogue Valley 15 years ago from Long Beach, Calif.

Survivors include two daughters, Natalie Bradley, Central Point, and Janet Ziegenhagen, Long Beach; a brother, Dr. Bill Birch, Olney, Ill.; two sisters, Marion Busch, Long Beach, Calif., and Janette Spees, Rosiclare, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Gene Douglas LaHaie
The memorial service for Gene Douglas LaHaie will be at 4 p.m. today at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass. Everett Denniston of Merlin Community Baptist Church will officiate.

Mr. LaHaie, 55, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday (May 22, 2002) at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

He was born Jan. 5, 1947, in Iron Mountain, Mich. He moved to Grants Pass in 1976. He moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1989, and returned to Grants Pass in 2000.

Mr. LaHaie was a self-employed landscaper.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received.

Mr. LaHaie enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and raising flowers.

Survivors include a son, Joey, Grants Pass; two daughters, Kelly Touey and Andria Lenahan, both Grants Pass; a brother, Norbert, in California; two sisters, Cyndi Schwantz, San Jose, Calif., and Lisa LaHaie, Grants Pass; and three granddaughters.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

John F. Jeska
The funeral service for John F. Jeska will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. A joint committal service for John and his wife, Alma, will follow at 1 p.m. at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Jeska, 83, of Medford, died Saturday (May 18, 2002) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Millston, Wis., to Albert C. and Amelia A. (Linder) Jeska. He lived in Millston with his family until they moved to Salinas, Calif., in the late 1930s. On Nov. 30, 1942, in Washoe, Nev., he married Alma M. McKinney, who died in 2002. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1960 from Salinas, Calif.

Mr. Jeska owned and operated a farm on South Stage Road in Medford. He and his wife owned and operated Jeska Roofing for 20 years, where Mrs. Jeska took care of bookkeeping and payroll.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After landing on Omaha Beach, he was wounded in France and shipped to England to recuperate.

Mr. Jeska was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wildlife and the natural world.

Survivors include a son, Gary, Medford; a daughter, Marilyn Jeska Caswell, Mapleton; four brothers, Marvin, Rogue Valley, Russell and Robert, both Prunedale, Calif., and Rodger, in Southern California; two sisters, Betty Schoradt, Redding, Calif., and Gladys Teskey, Baker City; four grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacque Bliss; a sister, Helen; and four brothers, Delmar, Charles, Paul and Albert.

Friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.
