Alvin ‘Gale’ Williams
Alvin "Gale" Williams, 79, of Medford, died Saturday (March 15, 2003) at his home. A private service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

He was born June 9, 1923, in Holly Springs, Ark., to John Alvin and Leether Mary (House) Williams. On Nov. 29, 1941, in Gurdon, Ark., he married Leo Lorraine Coon, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1963 from Coos Bay.

Mr. Williams was a saw filer at Menesha Plywood in North Bend. He also worked as a foreman at Cheney Stud in Central Point and as a salesman for Lawson Products.

He enjoyed woodworking, buying and selling cars and politics.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, John H., Roseburg; two daughters, Pam Hartley, Antelope, Calif., and Dolores McNulty, Salem; three sisters, Pauline Griffin and Vada Wilson, both Sheridan, Ark., and Lottie Womack, Conway, Ark.; five grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Kathleen ‘Kay’ L. Clark
Kathleen "Kay" Lorraine Clark, 88, of Ashland, died Thursday (March 13, 2003) at her home. No service is planned.

She was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Portland, to Harvey and Frances (Towle) Predmore. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland. In Stevenson, Wash., she married Robert Middleton Clark, who survives.

The Clarks opened and operated the Palisades Bowling Alley in Lake Oswego until the mid-1960s.

Mrs. Clark was a homemaker and the creator and teller of "Mr. Mouse" stories. For 28 years she and her husband lived in Jacksonville, where they owned and operated a gift shop, The Hen House, in the 1970s and she volunteered at the Jacksonville Doll Museum.

She was known as "Grammer" to the children who visited her and were given sacks of goodies. For 20 years, she belonged to a coffee klatch, which met on Thursday mornings at the Good Bean Company in Jacksonville. She enjoyed arts and crafts, sewing and crossword puzzles.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of 66 years, include four daughters, Judith "Judi" Anne Gibbens, Issaquah, Wash., Toby Louise Coulter, Lake Oswego, Lorraine "Rainy" Inez Olson, Ashland, Margaret "Peggy" Arlene Kindred, Portland; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Rayleigha Coulter.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Dorothy L. Dirks Woodell
Dorothy Lucille Dirks Woodell, 94, of Ashland, died Saturday (March 15, 2003) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. A private memorial gathering will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born Sept. 3, 1908, in Sunnyside, Wash., to Peter B. and Eliza C. (Gates) Dirks. She graduated from Lake Stevens High School in Lake Stevens, Wash. In 1932, she received a bachelor’s degree from Linfield College in McMinnville. On Dec. 23, 1933, in McMinnville, she married Marshall E. Woodell, who died Jan. 15, 2003.

In the mid-1930s, Mrs. Woodell worked in the office of the president of Southern Oregon College of Education, now Southern Oregon University. In 1955, after raising her children, she continued her teaching career at Crater High School. She taught English and Spanish until retiring in 1973.

She enjoyed reading and wrote the story of her life for pleasure. She also enjoyed gardening, making braided rugs, sewing and knitting.

Survivors include a son, C. Braehm "Woody" Woodell, Lakeview; two daughters, Marchial Sue Hamilton, Clackamas, and Doree Anne Hull, Lebanon; two sisters, Myrtle Dirks Hartley and Jane Claire Dirks Edmunds, both McMinnville; eight grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Orville Dirks and John Armstrong Dirks; and five sisters, Doris Bissell, Virgie Barncord, Katie Dell Lilloren, Emma Ewens and Lulu Alice Wilcox.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Rodney M. Wittmers
The memorial Mass for Rodney M. Wittmers will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford. The Rev. David Schiferl will officiate.

Mr. Wittmers, 55, of Medford, died Monday (March 17, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born March 29, 1947, in South San Francisco. On Feb. 17, 1973, in Millbrae, Calif., he married Nancy Forde, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago from San Mateo, Calif.

Mr. Wittmers was a respiratory technician at Rogue Valley Medical Center for 10 years.

He was an excellent fisherman, chef, winemaker and enjoyed people.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his parents, Marian and John Wittmers, South San Francisco; and three brothers, Stan, Medford, William, Cupertino, Calif., and Martin, Vacaville, Calif.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Alma Reyes
The funeral Mass for Alma Reyes will be at 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford. The Rev. Liam Carey will officiate. The committal service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Ms. Reyes, 22, of Medford, died Sunday (March 23, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 8, 1980, in Los Angeles. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1994 from Los Angeles.

Ms. Reyes owned and operated an auto repair shop.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Ms. Reyes enjoyed her family, friends and life.

Survivors include a daughter, Adriana Inzunza, Medford; a son, Jesus Inzunza, Medford; her parents, Antonio and Balbina (Silva) Reyes, Medford; two brothers, Antonio Reyes Jr. and Valentin Reyes, both Medford; three sisters, Marlen Reyes, Gisela Reyes and Makensi Reyes, all Los Angeles; her paternal grandfather, Jose Maria Reyes, Morelos, Mexico; and her maternal grandmother, Juana Reyes, Medford.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.

Ruth Evelyn Dunn
The memorial service for Ruth Evelyn Dunn will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

Mrs. Dunn, 88, of Medford, died Sunday (March 23, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504, or the First Presbyterian Church Youth Fund, 85 S. Holly St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Jan. 23, 1915, in Medford, to Albert and Zella (Harmon) Hanscam. She graduated from Medford High School in 1931, from Southern Oregon Normal School in 1935, and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1955 from what is now Southern Oregon University.

On Sept. 30, 1936, in Medford, she married Fred William Dunn, who died in 2000.

Mrs. Dunn was a school teacher for the Central Point and Medford School Districts, retiring in 1978 after 32 years.

She was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Medford, where she served as a deacon and an elder. She held professional memberships in the National Educators Association (NEA), the Oregon Educators Association (OEA) and the Oregon Retired Educators Association (OREA). She was a 20-year member of the Medford YMCA, where she enjoyed swimming.

Mr. Dunn enjoyed people, gardening, cooking, especially baking cookies, and handicrafts such as sewing and knitting.

Survivors include two daughters, Delora Copple, Ashland, and Linda Eng, Philomath; two sisters, Clara Fader, Ashland, and Genevieve Evans, San Diego; a brother, Carl Hanscam, Occidental, Calif.; five granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David William Dunn; and a brother, Glenn Hanscam.

Friends may pay their respects from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Doris ‘Dorie’ P. Ekelman
The graveside service for Doris "Dorie" Phyliss Ekelman will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mrs. Ekelman, 71, of Trail, died Friday (March 21, 2003) at her home.

She was born May 27, 1931, in Mosca, Colo., to Clarence and Louella Gibbs Holland. On Jan. 13, 1984, in Las Vegas, she married Harry Ekelman, who survives.

Mrs. Ekelman was a cosmetologist and owned several beauty shops in Southern California. She moved to the Rogue Valley 21 years ago from Bullhead, Ariz.

She enjoyed writing letters to the editor at the Mail Tribune, music, painting and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Aleda Muth, New York, Theresa Holland, Big Rock, Tenn., and Janet Palka, Anaheim, Calif.; five sons, Andre' Baumann, Anaheim, Calif., Michael Turner, Trail, William Ekelman, in Arkansas, Stanley Brown, in Puerto Rico, and Kevin Ekelman, Central Point; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by twin sisters.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

George Francis Martin
George Francis Martin, 95, of Medford, died Saturday (March 22, 2003) at his home. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.

He was born April 17, 1907, in St. Louis. In 1933, in Fresno, Calif., he married Adelaide Amanda Fielder, who survives.

Mr. Martin was a mechanic for a service station/garage in California from 1934 to 1957. The Martins worked at Yosemite National Park from 1957 to 1965, where Mr. Martin was head of maintenance and Mrs. Martin worked in housekeeping. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1965 from Yosemite National Park and worked at Crater Lake National Park for five seasons.

He enjoyed golfing.

He is survived by his wife, Aldelaide A. Martin, Medford. He was preceded in death by a son, Buck Martin Jr.

Gilbert Leonard Burton
Gilbert Leonard Burton, 85, of Ashland, died Friday (March 21, 2003) at Linda Vista Care Center. No service is planned.

He was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Baltimore.

Mr. Burton was an advertising executive in San Francisco for 20 years.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army under the command of General Eisenhower in North Africa, Italy and Germany, attaining the rank of first lieutenant.

Mr. Burton enjoyed politics and was especially proud of his professional involvement in John F. Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign, during which time he interviewed Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Belafonte for campaign advertisements. He moved to Ashland in 1980, where he was an advocate for seniors.

He was a lifelong sports enthusiast and an avid bridge player. After his retirement the Burtons enjoyed traveling in Central and South America and Europe, at one point camping in a Volkswagen bus for two years.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Alice Burton; three sons, Charles, Steilacoom, Wash., Guy and Neil, both Portland; and one granddaughter.

Mary Francis Higgins
Mary Francis Higgins, 72, of Prospect died Saturday (March 22, 2003) at her home. A private service will be held. Interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born April 14, 1930, in Shawnee, Okla., to Frank and Melba Cooper. On Sept. 9, 1949, in Oklahoma City, she married Donald Higgins, who survives. They moved to Oregon in 1974 from Santa Monica, Calif. They lived in Grants Pass from 1974 to 1988, when they moved to Prospect.

Mrs. Higgins worked as a secretary in banking, then as a teacher’s aide at Manzanita Elementary School in Grants Pass, retiring in 1987.

She and her husband were volunteers for the Forest Service campgrounds for seven years.

Mrs. Higgins enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Pam Higgins and Cheryl M. Washburn, both Grants Pass; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Claude Bryson
Claude Bryson, 70, of Eagle Point, died Monday (March 24, 2003) in Medford. A memorial service will be held in Seneca, S.C.

He was born Jan. 28, 1933, in Six Mile, S.C., to Joseph and Lula Bryson. On July 31, 1960, in Reno, Nev., he married Roxy Williams, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1998.

Mr. Bryson was self-employed in many different businesses, including automobile sales, before his retirement.

He was a member of Bountyland Baptist Church in Seneca, S.C.

Mr. Bryson enjoyed auto racing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Cheryl Simmons, Seneca, S.C.; a son, Tony, Seneca, S.C.; two brothers, Jimmy, Seneca, S.C., and "Devere, " Walhalla, S.C.; a sister, Patricia Collins, Seneca, S.C.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Mary L. O’Leary
The funeral for Mary L. O’Leary will be at 1 p.m. today at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass. Interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.

Ms. O’Leary, 82, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday (March 25, 2003) at her home.

She was born April 9, 1920, in Catron, Mo., to Thomas and Mary Lints. She was of Cherokee heritage.

Ms. O’Leary lived in San Bernardino, Calif., for several years before moving to Grants Pass in 1972.

She enjoyed reading her Bible and listening to religious music.

Survivors include a brother, John Lints, Grants Pass; four sisters, Lois Grammer, Seneca, Mo., Delores Lock, Corpus Christi, Texas, Bonnie Ellis, Carson, Calif., and Wanda Bird, Goodman, Mo.; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.
