Frank Alfred Dallas
Frank Alfred Dallas, 86, of Talent, died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center. The memorial service has been held.

He was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Lennon, Mich., to Robert and Edna (Crandell) Dallas. On June 17, 1945, in Owosso, Mich., he married Leota May, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in the mid-1980s.

Mr. Dallas was a sheet metal worker in the heating and air conditioning industry.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 57 years, include a son, Robert, Talent; two daughters, Jackie Nielsen, Medford, and Jody Nichols, Ojai, Calif.; a sister, Ruby Matechek, Corunna, Mich.; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Clarence F. ‘Larry’ Quirk
Clarence F. "Larry" Quirk, 89, of Ashland, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at Linda Vista Care Center. The memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 33 N. Central Ave., Suite 330, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born April 14, 1913, in Seattle, to Patrick and Isabelle Quirk. On Dec. 1, 1951, in Portland, he married Dorothy Anderson, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1992 from Sacramento, Calif.

Mr. Quick was a self-employed paralegal. Prior to that he had worked for Melvin Coben Attorney at Law and for Local Loan Co., both in Sacramento, for 25 years.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a technician 5th grade in the 91st Infantry Division.

Mr. Quick was a member of the Catholic Church.

He enjoyed traveling, music and entertainment and played drums for the Russ Brown Band in Portland.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Brian. He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell.

Dorothy Mae Werner
The memorial service for Dorothy Mae Werner will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastwood Baptist Church, 775 N. Keeneway Drive, Medford.

Mrs. Werner, 79, of Medford, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at Farmington Square in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastwood Baptist Church Deacons Fund or Providence Hospice.

She was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Bismarck, N.D., to Raymond H. and Lena (Miller) Poff.

She attended school in Killdeer, N.D., until 1936. She attended Salem High School, where she won many singing awards. She graduated in 1941. Later, she attended dental school in California. During World War II, she worked in the lend-lease program. She became a dental assistant after the war.

On Nov. 26, 1966, in Portland, she married Richard L. Werner, who survives.

She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1969 when her husband was appointed Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife district biologist for Jackson and Josephine counties.

She liked to fish with her husband. She volunteered at Providence Medford Medical Center and the Medford airport, and she was a frequent visitor at local nursing homes.

She served as the contact person for the Fibromyalgia Network in Southern Oregon and Northern California and set up a section at the Bartels Library in the Smullin Center.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a sister, Elsie Ohmart, Eugene.

Elbert Dee Hefley
A private graveside service will be held today for Elbert Dee Hefley at Eagle Point National cemetery. A public memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Hefley, 79, of Eagle Point, died Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2003) in Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eagle Point Community Bible Church, 27 Shasta Ave., Eagle Point, OR 97524.

He was born July 26, 1923, in Hot Springs, Ark., to Ernest and Viola Hefley. On June 14, 1942, in Santa Ana, Calif., he married Betty Jane Herlow, who died in 2001.

Mr. Hefley was a timber faller for Medco in Butte Falls for 47 years. He was a World War II veteran and hit the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.

Mr. Hefley was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed his family and gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Steve, Eagle Point, and Michael, Portland; a daughter, Cheryl Breeden, Medford; two brothers, Melvin and Stanley, both Huntington Beach, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Ronald Rex Lawson
The funeral for Ronald Rex Lawson will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Medford. Interment will be at Brownsboro cemetery in Eagle Point.

Mr. Lawson, 60, of Eagle Point, died Sunday (Feb. 9, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 29, 1943, in Huntsville, Ark., to Martin and Beulah Lawson. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1972 from Eagle Mountain, Calif. On Nov. 22, 1998, in Reno, Nev., he married Dorene McMains, who survives.

Mr. Lawson was a fleet manager with the Bureau of Land Management. He also worked as a part-time horseshoer.

He enjoyed roping, riding and the outdoors.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include 11 children, Darla Waldron, Doobie Lawson, Erick West, Jim West, Misty West and Crystal West, all of Eagle Point, Ted Jamison, Shady Cove, Dan Lawson, Blythe, Calif., Don Lawson, Parker, Ariz., Karla Delgado, Pioneer Town, Calif., and Kristine Montoya, Huntington Beach, Calif.; six brothers, Lee, Brackenville, Texas, James, Springdale, Ark., Jesse, Huntsville, Ark., Lester, Porterville, Calif., Jerry, Indio, Calif., and Donald, Mansfield, Ark.; two sisters, Mary Diamond, Calimesa, Calif., and Walda Napler, Springdale, Ark.; and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Barry Joe, Cotton, Eudene and Toot; a daughter, Kenni Lea Jamison; and his parents, Martin and Beulah Lawson.

Harriet Hart Bergstrom
The memorial service for Harriet Hart Bergstrom will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Medford.

Mrs. Bergstrom, 76, of Medford, died Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) at her home.

She was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Medford, to Floyd H. and Leah C. Hart. Following her high school graduation from Kathryn Branson School in Ross, Calif., she attended the University of California in Berkeley and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. On Sept. 4, 1951, in Medford, she married Jack Bergstrom, who preceded her in death. They lived in Newport Beach, Calif., and Longview, Wash. Following her husband’s death in 1989, she returned to Medford.

Mrs. Bergstrom was a member of the Colony Club and the Contemporary Book Club of Medford. She attended the Episcopal church in Ashland and Medford.

She had a lifetime interest in genealogy and interior decorating.

Survivors include two sons, Andrew, Fresno, Calif., and Jake, Longview, Wash; a brother, Hank Hart, Medford; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Charity Bush and Anne Hart.

Carol Ann Kelts
The graveside service for Carol Ann Kelts will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford.

Mrs. Kelts, 61, of Las Vegas, formerly of Ashland, died Feb. 5, 2003, at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Primary Children’s Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 58249, Salt Lake City, UT 84158-0249.

She was born Carol Reeder on Sept. 12, 1941, in Berkeley, Calif. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1960. In 1961, in Ashland, she married Roland W. Kelts, who survives. They lived in the Rogue Valley for many years before moving to Las Vegas 34 years ago.

Mrs. Kelts was a homemaker, hospital volunteer, and a Cub Scout leader.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she was a former Sunday school and primary worker.

Mrs. Kelts enjoyed genealogy.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Cindy Evans, Springfield; two sons, Anthony ‘Tony’ G., Tucson, Ariz., and Gordon H., Las Vegas; her mother, Alice Avery, Tucson; three sisters, Mary Beth Ross, Tucson, Linda Sue Dugan, San Pablo, Calif., and Nancy Tranquillitsky, Oakland, Calif.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, George Smith Reeder.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Frederick P. Battis
The memorial service for Frederick P. Battis will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Battis, 78, of Medford, formerly of Klamath Falls, died Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1311 N.W. 21st Ave., Portland, OR 97209.

He was born June 24, 1924, in Lynn, Mass., to Andrew and Vasilike (Marvragan) Battis. He attended Industrial Arts High School but quit during his senior year to join the U.S. Marine Corps.

In December 1944, he married Bernice, who died in 1982. On Aug. 9, 1991, in Medford, he married Joan Fitzpatrick, who survives.

In Klamath Falls, Mr. Battis worked for Klamath Lumber, D.G. Shelter Lumber and Kesterson’s Lumber before opening Fred’s Radio and TV Repair, which he operated for 20 years. He lived in Klamath Falls for 40 years, and recently moved back to Medford.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Battis was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Massachusetts, and the Elks and Masonic Lodges in Klamath Falls.

He played the trumpet and was a professional musician, playing in the U.S. Marine Corps Band, Baldy’s Band and other bands in the Klamath Falls area. He was also asked to play with such famous bands as the Tommy Dorsey Band, Elvis Presley and Tex Beneke. In addition to music, he enjoyed bowling and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Michael Terry and Steven George, both Klamath Falls; a daughter, Virginia Graber, Medford; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Leonard Firman
Leonard Firman, 77, of Jacksonville, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at his home. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 13, 1925, in Chicago, to Leland and Tillie (Zelkin) Firman. On Oct. 26, 1956, in Los Angeles, he married Reather Cobb, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1960 from Los Angeles.

Mr. Firman was a camera man at the Mail Tribune for 22 years, retiring in 1988.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Firman enjoyed fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Larry, Bend; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Collura, in Louisiana; and a brother, Allen, in Tucson, Ariz.

Earl John Newcomb
The funeral for Earl John Newcomb will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Medford. Pastor Carl Smith of Cascade Gorge Christian Church will officiate. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Newcomb, 74, of Prospect, died Saturday (Feb. 8, 2003) at Hearthstone in Medford.

He was born May 22, 1928, in Blodgett, to Dale and Fern Newcomb. On June 1, 1952, in Cloverdale, he married Clara Longmire, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993 from McKinleyville, Calif.

Mr. Newcomb was a logger for most of his life.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Newcomb enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Earl J. Jr., White City, Duane, Eagle Point, Mickey, Prospect and Terry, Arcata, Calif.; a daughter, Cindy Ryan, Prospect; his mother, Fern Newcomb, Coos Bay; a brother, Gene, Coos Bay; a sister, Juanita Dunn, Mount Angel; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Cynthia Betty Howard
Cynthia Betty Howard, 84, of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) at Casa Verde Adult Family Home Care Facility in Medford. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born March 13, 1918, in Boston, to Bernard and Charlotte Goldfine. She moved to the Rogue Valley six years ago from Florida.

Survivors include a daughter, Heather Harrigan, Central Point; and a sister, Gwendolyn Wilder, Brockton, Mass. She was preceded in death by a brother, Maxwell.

Anna M. Roth
Anna M. Roth, 82, of Phoenix, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at her home. No service is planned.

She was born June 15, 1920, in Broken Bow, Neb., to Charles Benton and Christie Ann (Webb) Foglesong.

Mrs. Roth was a technical supervisor with EG&G; Electrical in Las Vegas. She was then transferred to Livermore, Calif., where she retired. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1987 from Livermore, Calif.

She was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading and watching movies.

Survivors include three cousins, Tom Oaks, Medford, Eula Hall, Roseburg, and Gifford Oaks, El Paso, Texas; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Bill Jefford; and two brothers, Don and Dallas.
