Michael James Schmitz
The graveside service for Michael James Schmitz will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Schmitz, 64, of Gold Hill, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Dialysis Center, Patient Trust Fund, 2868 Creekside Circle, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born March 12, 1938, in Moss Point, Miss., to Al N. and Rigmore Schmitz. On Sept. 2, 1961, in Zapata, Mexico, he married Annie M. McMillan, who died in 1990.

Mr. Schmitz was a pipe fitter on large ships at the Tacoma Washington Boat Yards for 15 years. He had also worked for Disneyland for five years. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 2000 from Washington.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1959.

Mr. Schmitz was a member of Plumber Steam Fitters Local 82 in Tacoma, Wash., and Local 582 in Los Angeles.

He enjoyed catfishing, hunting, shooting and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, James, Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Susan Shefcheck, Gold Hill; his mother, Rigmor Schmitz, Tumwater, Wash.; two brothers, Robert, Sarasota, Fla., and Tony, Picayune, Miss; four sisters, Patty King, Biloxi, Miss., Sine Derkacht, Chehalis, Wash.; Alleen Smith, Galena, Kan., and Becky Thompson, Tumwater, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

David W. Simpson
The memorial service for David W. Simpson will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Pastor Jim Larsen of the Christian Church of Ashland will officiate. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Simpson, 68, of Phoenix, died Saturday (Feb. 8, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Florence Welch FFA Scholarship Foundation, c/o Phoenix/Talent Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 698, Phoenix, OR 97535.

He was born March 9, 1934, in Riverside, Calif., to Samuel and Clara Simpson. He moved to the Rogue Valley 43 years ago from Southern California.

In the Rogue Valley, Mr. Simpson owned and operated Morton Milling Company, retiring in 1997. After his retirement he became a truck driver for RB Brown’s in Central Point.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 during the occupation of Germany, achieving the rank of SP3(T).

Mr. Simpson was a charter member of the Applegate Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Cattlemen’s Association, Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H clubs, and was active in youth organizations.

He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Barbara Larson-Simpson, Central Point; a daughter, Cathy Duarte, Medford; a son, Craig Simpson, Los Frailes, BCS, Mexico; a stepson, Michael Larson, Central Point; two stepdaughters, Shereen Riley and Christa Larson, both Central Point; a brother, Samuel, Rialto, Calif.; a sister, Carol Hope, Palm Desert, Calif.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill; and a sister, Francis Simpson.

Dorothy (Morris) Reimers
The memorial service for Dorothy Marie (Morris) Reimers will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills, 615 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos, Calif.

Mrs. Reimers, 77, of Saratoga, Calif., formerly of Ashland, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at Los Gatos Community Hospital in Los Gatos, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Fund, Lucille Packard Foundation, 770 Welch Road, Suite 350, Palo Alto, CA 94304.

She was born April 12, 1925, in Ashland, to Harry R. and Ruth Emery Morris. She was a descendent of Eber Emery, one of the founders of Ashland. Her father and grandfather founded Oak Street Tank & Steel, Ashland’s oldest manufacturing business.

She graduated from Ashland High School in 1943 and attended Oregon State University. On June 24, 1956, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland, she married James L. Reimers, who survives.

Mrs. Reimers worked for Engle Insurance, United Airlines, Oak Street Tank & Steel for nine years, in office management and as a homemaker.

She was a member of Zulema Temple, Daughters of the Nile Patrol, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Saratoga Country Club, and Allied Arts of Stanford.

Mrs. Reimers enjoyed tennis, bridge, golf and traveling with her husband.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Suzanne M. Reimers, Citrus Heights, Calif., and Diane P. Reimers, San Jose, Calif.; a son, James S., Saratoga, Calif.; a brother, R. Gene Morris, Ashland; a sister R. Gayle Morris, Ashland; and one grandchild.

Arrangements: Darling Fischer Chapel of the Hills, Los Gatos, Calif.

James D. Merrill
A Mass of Christian Burial for James D. Merrill will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anne Catholic Church in Grants Pass. The Rev. Henry Rufo will officiate. Interment will follow at Logtown cemetery in Jacksonville.

Mr. Merrill, 41, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Josephine County, 203 S.E. Ninth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

He was born July 29, 1961, in Grants Pass.

Mr. Merrill was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church.

He enjoyed sports, children, music and fishing.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Lewis and Elizabeth Merrill, Grants Pass; five brothers, Daniel, Rogue River, Keith, Grants Pass, Michael, Eugene, Robert, Lincoln, Neb., and Steven Rogers, Everett, Wash.; and two sisters, Denelle McVey, Monroe, Wash., and Jeanna Seneff, Grants Pass. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorella; and a brother, Anthony "Tony" Merrill.

Waunevia Wakeman
The memorial service for Waunevia Wakeman will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Community Bible Church in Central Point. Pastor Peter Slusher will officiate. Inurnment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Wakeman, 83, of White City, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at her daughter’s home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Bible Church Building Fund, 500 N. 10th St., Central Point, OR 97502.

She was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Gazelle, Calif., to Samuel and Dora Black. She lived in Grants Pass from 1935 to 1938. On Nov. 12, 1942, in Reno, Nev., she married Lester Wakeman, who died Dec. 28, 2002. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1946 from Lassen County, Calif.

Mrs. Wakeman was a registered nurse. She worked at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, Crater Osteopathic Hospital in Central Point, for Dr. Eugene Augter in Central Point, Dr. Howard Ferguson in Shady Cove, and several hospitals and doctors’ offices around the United States while her husband served in the U.S. armed forces in the late 1940s.

She was a member of the American Baptist Church in Eagle Point for nine years, and the Community Bible Church for the past 14 years.

Mrs. Wakeman enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.

Survivors include a son, Steven Mark, Medford; a daughter, Leslie Marie Wakeman, White City; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Gladys Juanita Rook-Phelan
Gladys Juanita Rook-Phelan, 87, of Medford, died Sunday (Feb. 9, 2003) at her home. A private service is planned. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2600 Siskiyou Blvd., Suite 100, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Aug. 3, 1915, in McCloud, Okla., to Fred and Christina Bartlett. She was married to Roy Wiley, Clarence Rook and Hubert Phelan, who all preceded her in death.

Mrs. Rook-Phelan was a cook.

She was a member of the Baptist Church and enjoyed crocheting.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Wiley, Medford, and Dean Wiley, Payson, Ariz.; five daughters, Jean Cowan, Betty Hogan, Helen Gaunt and Carolyn Wolfe, all Medford, and Joyce Brown, Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Fred Bartlett, Trail, and George Bartlett, Oklahoma City; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Harold Ray Wiley; two brothers, Frank and Howard Bartlett; and a sister, Freda Elliott.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Sue L. Thomas
The memorial service for Sue L. Thomas will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery Committal Shelter.

Mrs. Thomas, 49, of Eagle Point, died Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Among her survivors is her grandfather, Leonard L. Bradshaw, Medford.

Frederick L. Herbert
The military service for Frederick L. Herbert will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery. The memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, First Ward. Bishop Kirk D. Waggener will officiate. Interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Herbert, 81, of Medford, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at his home.

He was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Lead, S.D., to Paul and Mary Herbert. On April 23, 1976, in Las Vegas, he married Esther Morris, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 12 years ago from San Diego.

Mr. Herbert served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years. During this time, he served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of SFI-E6, and had been a pipefitter and locksmith.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mr. Herbert was a skilled woodcarver and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, his wife and his children.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Bernice McQuillan, Central Point, Florence Morse, Longview, Wash., and Judy White, Lakeside, Calif.; a son, Robert McQuillan, Corvallis; two brothers, Donald, Brigham City, Utah, and Leonard, Broomfield, Colo.; and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children and two brothers.

Sharon Anthony
The memorial service for Sharon Anthony will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the Sylvania Performing Arts Center at Portland Community College.

Mrs. Anthony, 57, of Lake Oswego, formerly of Medford, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at her home, of cancer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sharon Anthony Endowment, Portland Community College Foundation, P.O. Box 19000, Portland, OR 97280-0990.

She was born Sept. 29, 1945, in Santa Barbara, Calif. She was a 1963 graduate of Medford High School. She received a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in Eugene. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She married George Michael Anthony, who survives.

Mrs. Anthony was an English instructor at Portland Community College.

Survivors in addition to her husband, include a son, William Michael; a daughter, Elspeth Allyson Anthony; and her mother, Patricia Young Sanders.

Arrangements: Hennessey Goetsch and McGee, Portland.

Martha ‘Lavell’ Cody
A celebration of the life of Martha "Lavell" Cody and a benefit auction will be held at noon Saturday at Cody’s Place, 145 N.E. Mill St., Grants Pass.

Ms. Cody, 68, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born May 6, 1934, in Rock Springs, Wyo. She lived in the Rogue Valley for 33 years.

She and her husband started Cody’s Place in 1972, when they converted the old city police station in Grants Pass to what is now Cody’s Place. When they divorced, she continued to operate the business for another 15 years, then continued to work there after the sale of the business in 1997.

Ms. Cody was active in the community, sponsoring several youth sports organizations and annual fair events. She supported small businesses in the community and helped many people start their first business.

She enjoyed spending weekends beach-combing on the coast and vacationing with her family, gardening, knitting, jigsaw puzzles, fishing and rafting.

Survivors include two sons, Dean Black, Grants Pass, Samuel Black Jr., La Grande; and two daughters, Jeanie Black, Grants Pass, and Susan Black-Huff, Ashland; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel A. Black Sr.; and two brothers, Phillip and William Hawks.

Grace A. Boe
The memorial service for Grace A. Boe will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Medford. Darey Burkhalter will officiate.

Mrs. Boe, 90, of Coos Bay, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) at St. Catherine’s Alzheimer’s Center in Coos Bay.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1311 N.W. 21st Ave., Portland, OR 97209, or the American Heart Association, 1425 N.E. Irving St., Suite 100, Portland, OR 97232.

She was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Fort Pierre, S.D., to Howard and Addie Price. She received a teaching certificate from Black Hills State College in Spearfish, S.D. On May 29, 1941, in Draper, S.D., she married Haakon S. Boe, who died in 1989. She lived in Medford from 1958 to 2000.

Mrs. Boe was a housekeeper at Rogue Valley Manor for 10 years until her retirement in 1973.

She was a volunteer at the Lions Blind Center and the American Red Cross.

Mrs. Boe was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing and horseback riding.

Survivors include a son, Ronald H., North Bend; a daughter, Mary Lynn Lewallen, Ashland; a sister, Pearl McCurdy, Camarillo, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry.

Arrangements: Myrtle Grove Funeral Home, Coquille.

Joan Elaine Burry Hinson
Joan Elaine Burry Hinson, 54, of Jacksonville, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at her home. A private service was held.

She was born Sept. 11, 1948, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to George and Gertrude (Thomas) Burry. She received a degree in art from the University of Iowa. She moved to the Rogue Valley 20 years ago.

Ms. Hinson was an artist, working with stained glass, metal jewelry, pottery and in oils and watercolors. She was also a real estate broker in Jacksonville.

She loved her tabby cat, Godfrey, and enjoyed working in the garden with flowers of all kinds.

Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Burry Fuhrmeister, Findley Lake, N.Y., and Sandra Sigler, Castle Rock, Colo; and a brother, John Burry, Falmouth, Mass. She was preceded in death by her parents.
