Lynn Marie Jackson-Hines
A Buddhist memorial service for Lynn Marie Jackson-Hines will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 19, at Skylark Assisted Living in Ashland.

Ms. Hines, 71, of Ashland, died Sunday (Dec. 29, 2002) at Skylark Assisted Living in Ashland.

She was born Nov. 24, 1931, in Indianapolis.

Ms. Jackson-Hines had lived at Skylark longer than any other resident.

She enjoyed life, helping others and spending time with her many friends and caregivers.

Survivors include her friend, Teri DeSilva. She was preceded in death by a brother.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Sherry Lynn Halliday
The memorial service for Sherry Lynn Halliday will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Table Rock Fellowship. Inurnment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Ms. Halliday, 26, of Medford, died Dec. 26, 2002, at her home.

She was born Jan. 11, 1976, in Riverside, Calif. She moved to Medford in 1987 from Riverside, Calif.

Ms. Halliday was a homemaker and enjoyed giving manicures.

She attended Table Rock Fellowship.

Survivors include two daughters, Shauntai Halliday, Ashland, and Jocelynn Houck, White City; a son, Matthew Houck, White City; her mother, Patricia M. Halliday, Ashland; her father, Kenneth W. Halliday, Riverside, Calif.; her stepfather, Douglas Christlieb, Medford; a sister, Christina Halliday, Ashland; and four brothers, Dustin, Drew, Daniel and Dalton Christlieb, all of Ashland.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Beth Lockhart Barrett
The funeral for Beth Lockhart Barrett will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Medford lst Ward, Juanipero Way in Medford.

Mrs. Barrett, 85, of Medford, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at Rogue Valley Manor Health Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Manor Foundation, 1200 Mira Mar Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Beth Lockhart on Dec. 11, 1917, in Ogden, Utah. She attended Weber College in Ogden, Utah State University and Washington State University. On Jan. 1, 1942, in Ogden, Utah, she married Edward L. Barrett, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1992 from Davis, Calif.

Mrs. Barrett was a homemaker. She enjoyed genealogy.

She was a member of the LDS Church, and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Sue Lemmon, Salt Lake City; two sons, Douglas, Gardnerville, Nev., and Kent, Keokuk, Iowa; a brother, Eldon Lockhart, Ogden; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence.

Friends may pay their respects from noon to 12:45 p.m. Monday at the church.

Alice Sawser
Alice Sawser, 89, of Medford, died Nov. 13, 2002, in Medford. The funeral was held Nov. 18, at LaFollette’s Chapel in Burns.

She was born April 15, 1913, in Virginia, Minn. On Dec. 19, 1937, in Hines, she married Gordon Deimar Sawser, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Valerie James, Medford, and Renee Madarieta, Beaverton; a son, Gordon, Salem; a brother, Alton Oas, Portland; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: LaFollette’s Chapel, Burns.

Gerald E. Phillips
Gerald E. Phillips, 61, of Eagle Point, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) at his home. A private service will be held.

He was born Jan. 7, 1941, in Portland, to Russell James and Alyce (Ketel) Phillips. He moved to California when he was eight years old. After high school, he played soccer for 13 years, including three years playing semi-pro ball. On July 13, 1963, in Las Vegas, he married Diana Jo Fleming, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in December 2001 from California.

Mr. Phillips was a painter for Northrop Aircraft Company.

He served in the Merchant Marine.

Mr. Phillips was a member of the American Dart Association and enjoyed throwing darts. He also enjoyed playing pool, hunting, shooting his rifles and archery.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Kenneth and Corey, both of Eagle Point, and Gary, Hawthorne, Calif.; a daughter, Candice Phillips, Palmdale, Calif.; a brother, Tom, Lompoc, Calif. two sisters, Suzie Phillips, Redding, Calif., and Alyce Miller, in Tennessee; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Ray B. Lyon
The funeral for Ray B. Lyon will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Chapel in Medford. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Lyon, 74, of Central Point, died Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504, or the American Lung Association, 9320 SW Barbur Blvd., Portland, OR 97219.

He was born April 30, 1928, in Prospect to Ray and Florence (Gibson) Lyon, and was raised in Prospect. On Aug. 31, 1951, in Minden, Nev., he married Carol B. Osberg, who died July 27, 2002. Except for a short time spent in Myrtle Point, 1994-2000, he lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life.

During World War II, Mr. Lyon served in the Merchant Marine and then in the U.S. Army.

He enjoyed beekeeping.

Survivors include three daughters, Terrie Z. Callahan, Central Point, Sherrie Lee Ogier, Las Vegas, and Rustie Lyon, Eugene; a son, Kelly, Myrtle Point; two brothers, Fred, Talent, and Frank, Yakima, Wash.; a sister, Bonnie Lyon, in California; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Anthony Owen Stock
Anthony Owen Stock, 42, of Medford, died Sunday (Dec. 29, 2002) in Medford. The memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was born Sept. 5, 1960, in San Antonio. He moved to the Rogue Valley 12 years ago from California.

Mr. Stock worked locally as a painter.

He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Survivors include his mother, Kathryn Rasmussen, Medford; two brothers, Robert K., and Terry J., both Medford; and two sisters, Kelle Davis, Chula Vista, Calif., and Kasey Rasmussen, Medford.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Sean Lochman
Sean Lochman, 31, of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, formerly of Ashland, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, of heart failure at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu.

Mr. Lochman graduated from Ashland High School and was an active member of the First Methodist Church in Ashland. He and his family lived in Ashland from 1987 until fall of this year.

Survivors include two aunts, Marie Maretska, Medford, and Valerie McCoy, Ashland.

Benjamin Skudlarek
Benjamin Skudlarek, 74, of Central Point, died Dec. 22, 2002, at Providence Medford Medical Center.

The graveside service was held Friday, Dec. 27, at Eagle Point National cemetery. The memorial service followed at Trail Christian Fellowship in Eagle Point. Pastor Ron Marsh of Parkway Christian Center in Grants Pass officiated. Interment was at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 6501 SW Macadam, Portland, OR 97201.

He was born Nov. 28, 1928, in Racine, Wis., the son of Leo and Margaret Skudlarek. On Sept. 7, 1977, in Elko, Nev., he married Grace Shimel, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1963, from Rice Lake, Wis.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of corporal. He was a squadron leader in the National Guard until June 1, 1956, attaining the rank of sergeant first class.

Mr. Skudlarek was a meat cutter at Ray’s Sentry Market in Phoenix.

He was the mayor of Phoenix for six years, served on the Rogue Valley Council of Governments, as a city councilman and on the city’s police commission.

He was a member of Star Promenaders Square Dance and the Oregon Federation of Butchers.

Mr. Skudlarek enjoyed reading books by Louis L’Amour, fishing, duck hunting, photography, woodworking, shooting skeet and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Marsha Skudlarek, Eugene, and "C.J." Cheryl Skudlarek and Terese Browning-Perez, both of Medford; three sons, Brian, Redding, Calif., Jay, Jacksonville, and David, Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Patt Wilson, Medford; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his former wife, JoAnn Skudlarek, Eugene. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Skudlarek.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Elva Cox Johnson
Elva Cox Johnson, 87, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Dec. 29, 2002) at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation in Grants Pass. A private service was held at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

She was born May 20, 1915, in Alamo, Nev., to Joseph and Edna Cox. She moved to Grants Pass in 1973 from Chester, Calif.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She enjoyed gardening and knitting.

Survivors include her husband of 29 years, James Johnson, Grants Pass; a son, Bill Gregg, Salt Lake City; a daughter, Colleen Wickman, Grants Pass; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley, Grants Pass.

Carol Isabelle Whetstone
The memorial service for Carol Isabelle Whetstone will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McDonalds Chapel, 1275 Continental St., Redding, Calif. The Rev. John Krake will officiate.

Mrs. Whetstone, 83, of Redding, Calif., formerly of Phoenix, died Sunday (Dec. 29, 2002) of natural causes at Country Pines care facility in Redding, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dogs for the Deaf, Inc., 10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502.

She was born March 16, 1919, in Phoenix. She moved to Redding, Calif., in 1963 from Klamath Falls.

Mrs. Whetstone was a school teacher with Enterprise School District from 1963 to 1981.

She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority-Delta Lambda Chapter, Ladies of the Moose, and was a volunteer for the Women’s Refuge.

Survivors include two sons, Richard, Redding, Calif., and David, Sunnyvale, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: McDonald Chapel, Redding, Calif.

James T. Middleton Jr.
A memorial service for James Thomas Middleton Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rogue Valley Country Club in Medford. A second memorial service will be held Saturday at Allen Creek Community Church in Grants Pass.

Mr. Middleton, 40, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) in a boating accident on the Smith River in Del Norte County, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grants Pass YMCA, 1000 Redwood Ave., Grants Pass, OR 97527 or Special Olympics, 33 N. Central Ave., Suite 203, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born March 27, 1962, in Grants Pass. His family had been early settlers of the Jerome Prairie area of Josephine County. He attended schools in Rogue River, Gold Hill and Central Point, graduating from Crater High School in 1980. In 1985, he received a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University. In June 2000, he received a master’s degree in education from Southern Oregon University. He lived in the Medford area for many years before moving to Grants Pass six years ago.

Mr. Middleton was a special education teacher at Lincoln Savage Middle School in Murphy. He was also a rafting guide on local white water rivers for many consecutive summers.

He was an avid water sport enthusiast, a licensed airplane pilot and enjoyed motorcycle riding and spending time with his daughter.

Survivors include a daughter, Taionna, McCloud, Calif.; his mother and stepfather, Dianne and Grant Appleton, Medford; his father and stepmother, Tom and Gail Middleton, Kerby; a sister, Sharon Rusk, Lake Tahoe, Nev.; two stepbrothers, Steve Appleton, Medford, and Joe Appleton, Arlington, Wash; a stepsister, Mary Kallas, Medford; and two adopted brothers, Eddie Middleton, serving in the U.S. military, and Evan Middleton, Grants Pass. He was preceded in death by his great grandfather, Shade Combs, one of the founders of the Rogue River Rooster Crow.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Lorraine M. Kohn
The funeral for Lorraine M. Kohn will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hull & Hull Chapel in Grants Pass. The Followers of Christ will officiate. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens in Medford.

Mrs. Kohn, 75, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at her home.

She was born Lorraine Marie Underwood on March 14, 1927, in Tulsa, Okla. She moved to Grants Pass when she was young and attended Grants Pass schools. On Sept. 11, 1943, in Grants Pass, she married Melvin "Bill" Kohn, who died in 1997. They moved to Medford after he was discharged from the service. They returned to Grants Pass in 1995.

Mrs. Kohn was a member of the Followers of Christ church.

She enjoyed crocheting, music, playing the organ and traveling with her friend, Betty.

Survivors include two daughters, Dee Elder, Everett, Wash., and Pat Halsey, Chico, Calif.; a sister, Neoma "Skeeter" Jones, Roseburg; three brothers, Vern Caldwell, Sunny Valley, Gene Caldwell, in Arizona, and Kenneth Caldwell, Helena, Mont.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters.

Friends may pay their respects from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.
