Nona ‘Marnie’ Centers
The funeral for Nona "Marnie" Centers will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Mortuary Chapel in Medford. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.
Mrs. Centers, 96, of Gold Hill, died Tuesday (Nov. 19, 2002) at Farmington Square in Medford.

She was born Nona Herrley on May 20, 1906, in Omaha, Neb. She moved to the Rogue Valley 76 years ago from Sacramento, Calif. On April 2, 1927, in Grants Pass, she married
LaRoy Centers, who died in 1989.
Mrs. Centers was a homemaker. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge for more than 60 years and was also a member of the First Christian Church in Gold Hill.
Mrs. Centers enjoyed needlecrafts and her grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Marcia L. Brotherton, Central Point, and Virginia Rivett, Sacramento, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William L.; two daughters, Annie Wright and Donna M. Hobson; and two granddaughters, Barbara Jennings and Dixie Straus.
Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
Roma Lorraine Justis
A celebration of the life of Roma Lorraine Justis will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Bridge, 201 S.W. Bridge St., Grants Pass.
Mrs. Justis, 94, of Grants Pass, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002) at The Bridge retirement community.

She was born Sept. 22, 1908, in San Francisco. She lived in Berkeley, Calif., in her youth and attended University High School and the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied art.
Her first husband, Caryl Coleman, was an actor and producer. They later divorced. In 1939, she married
Arthur Justis, and they lived in Marin County. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Justis was a bookkeeper for the family plumbing business in Marin County, Calif. In 1945, she and her family moved to a home on the Eel River near Cummings, Mendocino, County, Calif., where they planned to retire. While living there, she and her husband built and operated a lumber and shingle mill and managed a redwood forest.
She moved to Southern California in 1950 and lived in various cities in California including El Monte, San Gabriel, Santa Rosa, Grass Valley and Yreka. She moved to Grants Pass in 1998.
She was an active life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron of the El Monte, Calif., chapter.
Mrs. Justis played piano and was involved in many community activities including charity and service work. She was a hospital volunteer when she lived in Grass Valley and Yreka, Calif.
She was known for her sense of humor and enjoyed people and animals.
Survivors include a son, Wallace Coleman, Grants Pass; three stepsons; a sister, Vernice Justis, Antioch, Calif.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James Coleman.

Elroy ‘Al’ A. Latvala
A private memorial service for Elroy "Al" A. Latvala will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 30, in Talent.
Mr. Latvala, 73, of Anderson, Calif., formerly of Gold Hill, died Nov. 11, 2002, at his home.
He was born Nov. 17, 1928, in Menahga, Paddock Township, Minn., to John and Selma Latvala. He was from a large family, with five sisters and three brothers.
Mr. Latvala was a real estate broker and owned Bar L Realty in Cottonwood, Calif. He lived in Gold Hill from 1971 to 1977.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Latvala enjoyed fishing, gardening and animals.
Survivors include two sons, Jack, Talent, and John, Portland; two daughters, Jill McMorran, Central Point and Joan Harp, Medford; a brother, Eino, in Tennessee; a sister, Irene Card, in Montana; and nine grandchildren.

Babe Fields
The memorial service for Babe Fields will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fields residence, 14725 Williams Highway, Williams. Pastor Roger McKay will officiate. Private interment will be at Sparlin cemetery, Williams.
Mr. Fields, 90, of Williams, died Saturday, (Nov. 16, 2002) at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

He was born Charles Lewis Fields on Aug. 19, 1912, in Provolt, and grew up and attended schools there. After the death of his good friend, Elijah Davidson, he hauled a monument to Elijah up to the Oregon Caves in 1933.
On Dec. 29, 1959, in Carson City, Nev., he married
LaVerna Eaton, and raised two stepchildren. She died in 1998. On Oct. 14, 2000, in Winnemucca, Nev., he married
Barbara Rimbey, who survives.
Mr. Fields owned and operated three different sawmills, including the last one, Fields and Stone in Williams. He was also a rancher and raised cattle.
He was a member of the Grants Pass Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1584; the Shriner’s; and the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite.
Mr. Fields enjoyed the land and being up in the hills. He enjoyed reading history and could answer just about any question he was asked.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Iola, and an infant sister Georgia; two brothers, Dorance A. "Boy" Fields and Eugene K. "Chick" Fields.

Rachel A. Gustafson
Rachel "Rae" Gustafson, 78, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 19, 2002) at her home. A private memorial service will be held.

She was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Clarkson, Wash., to Lee and Matilda Appleford. She grew up on the family ranch in Asotin County, Wash., and graduated from Washington State University, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
On July 19, 1944, in Chicago, she married
William H. Gustafson.
Following World War II, the couple moved to Seattle and operated Halecrest Veterinary Hospital until their retirement in 1988. They lived in Sunriver until 2000, when they moved to Medford, where Dr. Gustafson died on June 12, 2000.
Mrs. Gustafson was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Medford.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan G. Naumes, Medford, Debora G. Lowery, Lake Stevens, Wash.; a son, Francis Tong, Renton, Wash.; three sisters, Elizabeth Swantz, Vancouver, Wash., Harriet Ennis, Bend, and Patricia Thornton, Asotin, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Ramona Bartels, Medford; and six grandchildren.
Lee E. Garbert
The memorial service for Lee E. Garbert will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trail Christian Fellowship in Eagle Point. Pastor Rick Booye and Matthew McAuliffe will officiate. In 2003, the ashes will be buried at North Union cemetery in Kokomo, Ind.
Mr. Garbert, 85, of Phoenix, died Oct. 18, 2002 at a Medford foster care home.

He was born May 12, 1917, in Boone County, Ind., to Ora and Mary Garbert. On May 31, 1973, he married
Lynn Cowles, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1981 from Lucerne Valley, Calif.
During World War II, Mr. Garbert was an accountant for the Kokomo, Ind., Chrysler plant, while they made tank transmissions and rifle parts. He then became a public accountant and was a Department of Defense auditor in California.
He was a member of Trail Christian Fellowship, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees in Oregon, the Lions Club in Indiana and California, and was a member and president of Indiana’s many accounting associations.
Mr. Garbert enjoyed spending time with his family, reading and walking, camping and his dogs.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Gary, Denver; two daughters, Connie Francis, Medford, and Marta Mackown, Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada; a brother, Ed, Chatsworth, Calif.; a stepbrother, Woody Campbell, Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Zonda Kranz and Helen Newman, both Kokomo, Ind., and Edna Toutloff, Huntington, Ind.; a half-sister, Janet Robertson, Arp, Texas; a stepsister, Eloise Ruckman, in Indiana; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Oren Wendell Garbert and several step-siblings.

Rose M. Savasta
Rose Marie Savasta, 95, of Ashland, died Friday (Nov. 15, 2002) at her home. A private service will be held.

She was born Jan. 29, 1907, in San Francisco, to Flora and Alfredo Giocondi. She was raised in San Francisco, where she graduated from high school. On May 13, 1926, in San Francisco, she married
Matthew S. Savasta, who died in 1975.
Mrs. Savasta was a deputy sheriff for the city of San Francisco until her retirement, when she began a career in real estate. She moved to Ashland in July 2002.
She was a member of the North Bay Yacht Club.
Mrs. Savasta enjoyed traveling, especially to the Hawaiian Islands, fishing and boating, swimming and social activities.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Carmel Savasta, Ashland, and Tom Savasta, Lakehead, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas.

Roy G. Raney Jr.
Roy G. Raney Jr., 34, of Ashland, died Nov. 5, 2002, near Ashland. The memorial service will be held in Tennessee.
He was born Oct. 14, 1968, in Baquio City, Philippines, to Roy Sr. and Shirley Raney. He graduated from Lieman Bay High School in Englewood, Fla., and Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
Mr. Raney was a collegiate wrestler and wrestling coach. In addition to the Philippines, he lived in Okinawa, Nebraska, Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan and Oregon.
He enjoyed water skiing, windsurfing and writing poetry.
Survivors include two sons, Elijah and Gabriel, Charlotte, Mich.; a daughter, Mikayla Raney, Charlotte, Mich.; and his parents, Roy and Shirley Raney, Tampa, Fla.

Serena Christiani
Serena Christiani, 84, of Grants Pass, died Friday (Nov. 15, 2002) at her home. A private service will be held, with private interment at Eagle Point National cemetery.
She was born July 8, 1918, in Italy, and attended Bologna University in Italy. On March 25, 1947, in New York City, she married
Gladwyn Christiani, who died in 1996.
Mrs. Christiani was a teacher. She moved to Grants Pass in 1949 from California.
She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, antiques, going to yard sales and politics.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Winters, Grants Pass; two sons, James, in Georgia, and Albert, Ontario; and eight grandchildren.

Betty Jane Bowen
Betty Jane Bowen, 80, of Grants Pass, died Nov. 13, 2002, at her home. A private service was held.
She was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Flint, Mich. She married
John Bowen, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley 20 years ago from Ventura, Calif.
Mrs. Bowen was a member of The Betty Club and walked with the club in local parades.
She was a member of the Knife and Fork Club. She enjoyed tap dancing, crocheting and rug latching.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon McKenna, Grants Pass, and Wendy Grosfield, Seaside; a son, James Stober, Beaver; a sister, Beverly Gaber, Ventura, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Roberts.

Vallie Bauling
The memorial service for Vallie Bauling will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at Temple Emek Shalom in Ashland. Cantor Leona Mitchell will officiate.
Mrs. Bauling, 77, of Northridge Center in Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 19, 2002).
She was born Vallie Gordon on April 22, 1925, in Philadelphia. She attended Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. On July 7, 1946, in Los Angeles, she married
Frank Bauling, who died in 1990.
Mrs. Bauling was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She moved to the Rogue Valley five years ago. She enjoyed reading, watching TV and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include two sons, Leonard and Barry; and two grandchildren.

Lanny R. Pickens

Mr. Pickens, 42, of Eagle Point, died Wednesday (Nov. 20, 2002) at his home.

He was born July 22, 1960, in Bakersfield, Calif. He moved to the Rogue Valley in October 2001 from Madera, Calif.
Mr. Pickens was a member of Truth Tabernacle Church He enjoyed his family, people and joking around.
Survivors include two sons, Nicholas Dwayne, Central Point, and Christopher James, Bakersfield; two daughters, Lana Goff and Amanda Goff, both White City; his parents, Pete and Glenda Barbee, Firebaugh, Calif.; a brother, Jimmy Ray, Crescent City, Calif.; two stepbrothers; a sister, Michelle Thompson, Eagle Point; and three grandchildren.
