Alvina ‘Betty’ M. McFarland
Alvina "Betty" May McFarland, 76, of Medford, died Sunday (Dec. 1, 2002) at her home. No service is planned.

She was born May 14, 1926, in Marcola. She graduated from Eugene High School in 1943 and moved to the Rogue Valley in 1958.
Ms. McFarland owned and operated the Sportsman Inn in Grants Pass and the Hideaway in Merlin.
She enjoyed regular floating trips on the Rogue River.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Scouten; two sons, Douglas Daggett and Todd Daggett; a sister, Nancy Fowler; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mary Agnes Downs
Mary Agnes Downs, 87, of Grants Pass, died Monday (Dec. 2, 2002) at her home. No service is planned.
She was born Nov. 4, 1915, in Pasadena, Calif. On May 19, 1940, in Los Angeles, she married
Thomas Hall Downs, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Downs was a homemaker.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, fishing and trips to Laughlin, Nev.
Survivors include a son, Thomas, Williams; three daughters, Mary Jane Sutton, Concord, Calif., Margaret Sorensen, Grants Pass, and Elizabeth Downs, Rio Rancho, N.M.; a sister, Hilda Christensen, Rio Rancho, N.M.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and William Laidlaw.

Harold G. ‘Harry’ Ott
The memorial service for Harold G. "Harry" Ott will be at 11 a.m. today at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home in Grants Pass.
Mr. Ott, 54, of Portland, formerly of Grants Pass, died Sunday (Dec. 1, 2002) at a friend’s home in Grants Pass.
He was born Sept. 16, 1948, in Stuttgart, Germany, and moved to Waller, Texas, when he was 5. He moved to Grants Pass in 1977 from Los Angeles. In 1984, in Merlin, he married
Susan Powell, who survives. He had lived in the Portland area since 1992.
Mr. Ott was a heavy equipment operator, assisting with the setup of trade shows at the convention center.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 17 and served in Vietnam.
Mr. Ott was a member of the Oregon-Washington Brotherhood of Carpenters and the Nuggets Motorcycle Club.
He was a musician and enjoyed the music of Elvis Presley and Bob Seger. He also enjoyed fishing and camping.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Lori Kroshus, Vancouver, Wash.; his mother, Lydia Maddox, Richmond, Texas; his stepfather, Marvin Hurley, Richmond, Texas; a brother, Stephen Maddox, Sugarland, Texas; and one granddaughter.

Betty G. Brown
The memorial service for Betty G. Brown will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.
Ms. Brown, 61, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 2002) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born Betty Goode on May 10, 1941, in Fayetteville, N.C. She graduated from LaSalle University in Illinois. She also spent one year at Northwestern University.
Ms. Brown was a certified public accountant. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1995 from Kalispell, Mont.
She enjoyed tennis, gardening, reading and traveling.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Vigen and Debbie Shiozaki, both Seattle; and three grandchildren.

Phyllis Jean Lindt
The memorial service for Phyllis Jean Lindt will be at 11 a.m. Monday at her home, 1405 S.E. Rogue Drive, Grants Pass.
Mrs. Lindt, 78, of Grants Pass, died Nov. 28, 2002, at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Peru, Ind., to Grace and Glen Alspach. In 1964, in Las Vegas, she married
Nicholas H. Lindt, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Lindt moved to Van Nuys, Calif., from Indiana to become a model. She later became an executive secretary at California Federal Savings and Loan.
Having grown up in Peru, Ind., she remained a staunch fan of Notre Dame and Arnold Palmer despite her husband’s support of the University of Southern California and Jack Nicklaus.
Survivors include a stepson, Ken Lindt, Newport Beach, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Jacquelyn Cubre, Fair Oaks, Calif.; and a sister, Bernie Petty, Yuba City, Calif.

Jessie Smart Budge
The memorial service for Jessie Smart Budge will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford. Dr. Roger Hall will officiate. A reception will follow at the family home. A private graveside service will be held at the Medford I.O.O.F. cemetery.
Mrs. Budge, 90, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 2002) at her home.

She was born Jan. 19, 1912, in Preston, Idaho, to James Gittins Smart and Nora Elvina Jensen Smart. On April 15, 1939, in Boise, Idaho, she married
Boyd Edwin Budge, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947.
In 1959, she and her husband founded Budge-McHugh Plumbing Supply Co. She was the president of the company and active until her retirement in 1996.
Mrs. Budge was active in the Kiwanian Dames and the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She enjoyed fishing, napping at Howard Prairie Lake Resort, RV travel and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Barbara Budge Griffin, Medford, and Donna Budge McLanahan, Honolulu; a son, Louis James, Eagle Point; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may pay their respects from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
Christopher B. ‘Bud’ Heft
Christopher B. "Bud" Heft, 73, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 2002) at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center. No service is planned.
He was born Dec. 3, 1929, in Malden, Mass. He moved to Grants Pass in 1967 from California.
Mr. Heft worked for Litton Industries as an electronics inspector for five years.
He enjoyed pro hockey and fishing.
Survivors include three brothers, Richard, Grants Pass, Eugene, Fort Myers, Fla., and John, Los Angeles; and a sister, Charlotte Spence, Boulder City, Nev. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and Charles.

Doris Ruth Murphy
The funeral for Doris Ruth Murphy will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. Private interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford.
Mrs. Murphy, 82, of Selma, formerly of Talent and Ashland, died Tuesday (Dec. 3, 2002) at home.

She was born May 21, 1920, in Hannah, N.D., to Jessie and Ellen (Smith) Willcox. On Dec. 1, 1974, in Talent, she married
William Nelson Murphy, who died in 1997.
Mrs. Murphy was a homemaker. She lived in Ashland for 35 years and in the Talent area for 25 years. She moved to Selma two years ago.
She enjoyed gardening, especially flower gardening.
Survivors include two daughters, Florence M. Farmer, Talent, and Ellen R. Craine, Selma; two sons, Jesse E. Shaw, Montague, Calif., and William H. Shaw, Selma; a sister, Mary Birkey, Central Point; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anita; two brothers; and a sister.

Katharine L. Buettner
Katharine L. Buettner, 78, of Medford, died Nov. 29, 2002, at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. The memorial service was held Dec. 1 at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
She was born Jan. 29, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, to Irvin LeRoy and Lela Larue (Netz) Lehman. She attended DeVilbiss High School in Toledo, Ohio, and received a degree in psychology from the University of Toledo in 1946. On April 24, 1948, in Toledo, she married
Edward F. Buettner, who died in 2001.
Mrs. Buettner lived in Bombay and Calcutta, India from 1951 to 1961, where her husband worked for American Foreign Insurance Association. All of her children were born there. From 1961 to 1963, she lived in Tokyo, then moved to Greenbrae, Calif., until her retirement to Pacific Grove, Calif.
Mrs. Buettner was a nursery school director.
She enjoyed art, reading, classical music and her friends.
Survivors include a son, Brook E., Colorado Springs, Colo., two daughters, Barbara N. Buettner, Medford and Holly A. (Buettner) Stephens, Novato, Calif.; a sister, Elizabeth Jane (Lehman) Kridler, Toledo, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Mulhauser and Suzanne Gardner; and a brother, Richard LeRoy Lehman.

Leo Paul Hintz
Leo Paul Hintz, 80, of Talent, died Sunday (Dec. 1, 2002) at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland. No service is planned. Inurnment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.
He was born March 7, 1922, in Chicago, to Jacob and Anna Hintz. He married
Jean, who died in 1988.
Mr. Hintz was an electrician. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1979 from San Diego.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward; a sister; and a stepson, Gaylord Watson.

Claire Lorraine Rickrode
Claire Lorraine Rickrode, 74, of South San Francisco, died June 7, 2002. A private service was held in Placerville, Calif.

She was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Medford, to Edward and Lorraine Thomas. She attended Medford High School and Oregon State University. On Aug. 10, 1956, in Medford, she married
James C. Rickrode, who died in 1972. She lived in Medford through the 1950s.
Mrs. Rickrode was a member of the San Francisco Zoological Society.
Survivors include a son, Corey, Placerville, Calif.; a daughter, Julie Rickrode, San Marcos, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Mary Cathryn Gibson
A memorial open house for Mary Cathryn Gibson will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the home of Steve and Jodi Baldwin, 351 Robert Trent Jones Blvd., Eagle Point.
Mrs. Gibson, 85, of Central Point, died Thursday (Dec. 5, 2002) in Medford.

She was born Mary Cathryn Nobles on March 8, 1917, in Aurora, Mo. On June 21, 1935, in Pasadena, Calif., she married
Everett B. Gibson, who survives. She lived in Central Point for 57 years.
Mrs. Gibson was a graduate of Pasadena High School.
She was a partner in Gibson Saddlery, a western store in White City.
Mrs. Gibson was a Master Gardener, a Home Extension member, a 4-H leader and past president of Jackson County Leaders Association.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, playing the organ and family activities.
In addition to her husband, survivors include: a daughter, Linda Anderson, Eagle Point; a son Clint, Sheridan, Wyo.; two sisters, Bessie Corbin, Grants Pass, and Esther Blanke, Brea, Calif.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
