Daniel Daniels
Daniel Daniels, 82, of Ashland, died Monday (June 16, 2003) at his home. The graveside service was held Tuesday at Jacksonville cemetery. Rabbi Marc Sirinsky officiated.

He was born March 23, 1921, in Chicago, to Haskell and Sophie Daniels. He attended Northwestern University. On Oct. 26, 1947, in Chicago, he married Beverly, who died in 1992.

Mr. Daniels was a certified public accountant in Chicago. He moved to Ashland in 2000 from Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed on Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands.

Mr. Daniels was a member of the Illinois C.P.A. Society.

He enjoyed classical music, playing French horn in various symphonic orchestras, reading and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Shaw Straus, Ashland; a son, Harvey, Chicago; two sisters, Reva Daniels, Chicago, and Sybil Sherwood, Raleigh, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Dennis F. MacDermot
The graveside service for Dennis F. MacDermot will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. MacDermot, 64, of Medford, died Saturday (May 10, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Sept. 3, 1938, in Washington, D.C., to George and Jessie (Kaatz) MacDermot. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1967.

Mr. MacDermot was an insurance agent for Farmers Insurance Group for 27 years.

He was a member of Medford Elks Lodge No. 1168 and the Medford Moose Lodge.

Mr. MacDermot enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include a son, James A., Portland; three daughters, Rhonda D. MacDermot and Cathie A. Pingel, both Medford, and Dawn M. Brown, Salem; two sisters, Jaye Rinehart, Rogue River, and Connie Moore, McMinnville; a brother, Harold, Vista, Calif.; and one grandchild.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Helma Emilie Walker
The graveside service for Helma Emilie Walker will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Point National cemetery interment shelter. Pastor Edward Allen will officiate.

Mrs. Walker, 70, of Eagle Point, died Tuesday (May 13, 2003) at her home.

She was born Feb. 9, 1933, in Czechoslovakia. On April 2, 1954, in Augsburg, Germany, she married David Lawrence Walker, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1976 from Eastern Oregon.

Mrs. Walker was a Full Gospel minister for many years. She was a minister at Hearthstone Nursing Home for 17 years.

She enjoyed collecting jewelry, fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Norma Allen, Medford; a son, Edward Allen, Medford; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a child.

Mary F. Wall
The funeral for Mary F. Wall will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Valley Bible Fellowship in Talent.

Mrs. Wall, 76, of Talent, died Sunday (May 11, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Bible Fellowship, P.O. Box 568, Talent, OR 97540.

She was born Mary F. Ridgeway on March 8, 1927, in Cheyenne, Okla. Her family moved to the Rogue Valley in 1932. On Sept. 7, 1946, in Battle Ground, Wash., she married her childhood sweetheart, Gilbert W. Wall, who survives.

Mrs. Wall was the secretary at Talent Elementary School for 14 years. She was also the co-owner and secretary of Wall Trucking.

She was a member of Valley Bible Fellowship.

Mrs. Wall regularly donated blood at the Red Cross. She enjoyed traveling, needlework and NASCAR racing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Dale, Medford; a daughter, Marlene Ricks, Jefferson, Ga.; a sister, Neita Kinart, Vancouver, Wash.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jon Ridgeway.

Helen V. Holmes
The memorial service for Helen V. Holmes will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Holmes, 75, of Medford, died May 3, 2003, at her home.

Dorothy M. Williams
The memorial service for Dorothy M. Williams will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Parkway Christian Center, 229 N.E. Beacon Drive, Grants Pass. The Rev. Dennis Webber of Parkway Christian Center and the Rev. Harry Ayers, retired from Grants Pass Assembly of God, will officiate. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Missouri Flats cemetery, Applegate.

Mrs. Williams, 89, of Gold Hill, died Saturday (May 10, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Life Assembly of God, P.O. Box 1186, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Nov. 11, 1913, at the Brittian home on the banks of the Rogue River in Grants Pass, to Edward and Tarcy Inman. She attended Winona School, and later attended schools in Grants Pass and Medford, graduating from Central Point High in 1931. On July 1, 1935, in Grants Pass, she married Melbourne "Mel" Williams, who died in 1999.

During her teenage years, she was a river guide with her brother. She also worked in the fruit packing business in Medford that later became Harry and David. During World War II, she lived in naval housing projects in South San Francisco and Pearl Harbor. While her husband served in the U.S. Navy, she worked as a waitress for Oscar and Theolla Loomis in a restaurant on North Sixth Street in Grants Pass. She later worked for Valley Florist in Gold Hill for a time.

Mrs. Williams was a member of the Assembly of God in Grants Pass and Gold Hill and served as a Sunday School teacher, soloist and choir member. During the 1960s, she was the first kindergarten teacher at Grants Pass Assembly of God. She was a Cub Scout den master for many years, held state offices with the PTA, and was on the West Coast regional board for Women’s Aglow.

She wrote poetry and a book of miracles. Besides music and teaching, she was an avid gardener and enjoyed creating flower gardens and borders. She was well-known for her flower arrangements for friends and churches, and won several awards for her flower arrangements at the Josephine County Fair. She also judged flower arrangements at the Jackson County Fair.

Mrs. Williams enjoyed the outdoors, nature and fishing.

Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Joel, Gold Hill, Monty, Grants Pass, and Martin, Hermiston; a sister, Arlene Coffman, Central Point; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edyth Bohnert and Ernestine Lisenbee; and a brother, Edward Whitney Inman.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Gaylord Wm. ‘Snuffy’ Smith
Gaylord Wm. "Snuffy" Smith, 77, of Ashland, died Monday (May 12, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Smith/Silver Scholarship Fund, c/o Ashland High School, 201 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland, OR 97521.

He was born March 1, 1926, in Grants Pass, to Gaylord W. and Edna E. (Trimble) Smith. He was raised in Grants Pass and graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1944. On Sept. 7, 1947, in Grants Pass, he married Patricia J.Smith, who survives.

He earned a teaching degree in 1950 from what is now Southern Oregon University, where he played on Far West League Championship football teams from 1946 to 1948. He received a master’s degree from the University of Oregon in 1954.

Mr. Smith began teaching for Ashland School District in 1950, and was principal of Ashland High School from 1957 until his retirement in 1985.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Rotary Club and Elks Lodge No. 944, both in Ashland. He was inducted into the Southern Oregon University Hall of Fame in 1995.

He was an avid golfer and billiards player.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Jane Claussen, Phoenix; three sons, Michael G., Talent, and William A. and Patrick M., both Springfield; two brothers, Richard, Foster City, Calif., and Raymond, Castro Valley, Calif.; a sister, JoAnne Marshall, Drewsey; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Beverly Leach
The funeral for Beverly Leach will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Musgrove Family Center in Eugene. Interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park. A memorial gathering will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at 2215 Roberts Road, Medford.

Ms. Leach, 78, of Eugene, formerly of Medford, died Monday (May 12, 2003) of cancer.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dogs for the Deaf, 10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502.

She was born Feb. 10, 1925, in Medford, to Edward and Lorena (Stratton) Leach. She received a bachelor’s degree in general science from Oregon State University. She lived in Medford, Portland and Seattle.

Ms. Leach was a medical technician at Sacred Heart for 39 years.

She served as a Navy Wave during World War II and the Korean War.

Ms. Leach was a member of Waves National and Self Help for the Hard of Hearing.

She enjoyed travel, gardening and reading.

Survivors include a brother, Loren Leach, Las Vegas; and a sister, Adrienne Norris, Tigard. She was preceded in death by a sister, Elayne McClelland.

Arrangements: Musgrove Family Mortuary, Eugene.

Raymond Lee Wooden
The memorial service for Raymond Lee Wooden will be at noon Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grants Pass. Pastor Steven Stork will officiate.

Mr. Wooden, 72, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (May 10, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 865 N.W. Fifth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526, or Lovejoy Hospice, 939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

He was born Jan. 2, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo. On Dec. 27, 1988, in Reno, Nev., he married Beverly Pfeifer, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 12 years ago from Fountain Valley, Calif.

Mr. Wooden was an auto mechanic for Courtesy Chevrolet in Phoenix, Ariz., for 10 years. He then changed careers and became a graphic artist working for Continental Graphics in Irvine, Calif., until his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Mr. Wooden was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed drawing, woodworking and golf.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Scott, Grass Valley, Calif., and Derek, Antioch, Ill.; two daughters, Lisa Escutia, Poway, Calif., and Leslie Allen, Penrose, Colo.; a brother, Ken, in Tennessee; four sisters, Frances Byrnes, Northridge, Calif., Beverly Marquis, in Missouri, Donna Kellogg, in Arizona, and Judy Williams, Sacramento, Calif.; and 16 grandchildren.

Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Earl W. Markillie
The graveside service for Earl W. Markillie will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery interment shelter. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate.

Mr. Markillie, 69, of Central Point, died Saturday (May 10, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Jan. 12, 1934, in Hesperia, Mich., to Richard and Laura Markillie. On Nov. 22, 1957, in Sutherlin, he married Margaret Jane Haddock, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1967 from Roseburg.

Mr. Markillie was a supervisor for Timber Products until his retirement in 1992.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Markillie was an avid reader. He enjoyed music, bowling, fishing and traveling.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Gerald Hill, Brooklyn Park, Minn., and James Hill, Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter, Kathleen Hill, Chiloquin; a brother, Elmer "Jake, " Sutherlin; a sister, Mary Rogers, Springfield; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dolores Valle.

Lester Simpson Wells
The memorial service for Lester Simpson Wells will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Grants Pass Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pastor Glen Chinn will officiate. Interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Grants Pass.

Mr. Wells, 99, of Canyonville, died April 8, 2003, at Forest Glenn Senior Residence in Canyonville.

He was born May 20, 1903, in Delia, Kan. On March 28, 1921, in Savannah, Mo., he married Viola Chambers, who died in 1990. They lived in Heinz, Calif., from 1941 to 1945. They moved to La Sierra, Calif., where they lived until 1965, when they moved to Wolf Creek. They moved to Grants Pass in 1975.

Mr. Wells was a farmer and dairyman before his retirement. He moved to Canyonville in 2000.

He was a member of the Grants Pass Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mr. Wells enjoyed people, gardening and growing roses, orchids and fruit trees.

Survivors include three daughters, Wanda Ferguson and Leslye Snider, both Riverside, Calif., and Ileen Graham, Klamath Falls; a sister, Velma Meade, Topeka, Kan.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.
