Lora Petersen
No services are planned for Lora Petersen. Interment will be at Fort Rosencrans National cemetery in San Diego, Calif.

Mrs. Petersen, 87, of White City, died Saturday (May 24, 2003) at her home.

She was born Lora Dobson on April 27, 1916, in Joplin, Mo.

In Salt Lake City, she married Harold Petersen, who died in 1955.

She moved from McNeary, Ore., to the Rogue Valley in 1953.

Mrs. Petersen worked as a secretary for the Veterans Administration.

She enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Survivors include a son, Harold Petersen, Springfield, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Neil R. Rayburn
The funeral service for Neil R. Rayburn will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Conger-Morris Medford Chapel. Interment will be at the Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Rayburn, 76, of Medford, formerly, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (May 22, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford OR 97504.

He was born March 29, 1927, in Tekoa, Wash., the son of Alfred and Edna (Whitehead) Rayburn.

He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1956 and worked in the plywood divisions of local lumber mills. He retired from Southwest Forest Industries in 1992.

Mr. Rayburn served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of the Medford Eagles Lodge and Medford Elks Lodge No. 1168. He was a lifetime member of the Medford chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was an avid reader.

Survivors include one sister, Shirley Spears, Medford; and one brother, Bill Rayburn, Grants Pass.

Robert Earl Turnipseed
Robert Earl Turnipseed, 85, of Central Point, died Wednesday (May 21, 2003) at a Medford foster home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Asante Hospice, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Feb. 12, 1918, in Washington, Iowa, to David and Mary Turnipseed. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

On April 18, 1943, in Lakewood, Calif., he married Dean Ann Pitcher, who survives. They moved to Williams in 1980 and to Central Point in 1991.

Mr. Turnipseed worked at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, Calif., during World War II.

He then worked as a lineman for Edison Co. for many years. He later worked as an electrical contractor in Orange County, Los Angeles County and Ventura County.

He enjoyed baseball and billiards.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 60 years, include a son, R. Michael, Genoa, Nev.; two daughters, Pegge Merkel, Little Rock, Ark., and Pam Turnipseed, Medford; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris, Central Point.

Ida Cora Burns
Ida Cora Burns, 92, of Ashland, died Thursday (May 22, 2003) at Ashland Community Hospital. The memorial service will be held at a later date.

She was born Nov. 22, 1910, in Ashland, to Sarah E. and Schuyler Gunter. The family moved to a farm on lower Rogue River Road in Grants Pass in 1922.

She graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1929 and received a teaching certificate from Oregon State University in 1934.

She began working as a librarian at Ashland Junior High in 1934 and later accepted a bookkeeping / shorthand teaching position at the high school.

In June 1937, at her parents’ home in Ashland, she married Philip Lee Burns of Ashland and moved away from the Rogue Valley for eight years, returning to Ashland in 1945. They later divorced.

In 1960, Ms. Burns returned to teaching at Ashland Middle School as a typing teacher and Dean of Girls until her retirement in 1972.

She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, the First United Methodist Church, Ashland Pinochle Club and was actively involved in volunteer work at Ashland Community Hospital, Meals on Wheels and the Chamber of Commerce plaza booth during the summer tourist season.

She enjoyed travel and camping, arts and crafts, gardening and quilting and crocheting.

Survivors include five sons, Martin E., Ashland, Richard E., Roseburg, Jerome C., Kearnysville, W.Va., and Philip M., Orting, Wash., and Bruce R., Honolulu; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald, Clyde and Merrill; and two sisters, Myra Bailey and Beatrice Cornilsen.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

June P. Byers
Dr. June P. Byers, 81, of Medford, died Thursday (May 22, 2003) at Farmington Square in Medford. The service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, National Processing Center, P.O. Box 64421, St. Paul, MN 55164-0421.

She was born June Peters on April 20, 1922, in Homer City, Pa. In 1944, she graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She graduated from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia in 1948, and served a two year internship at Philadelphia General Hospital.

On Nov. 5, 1949, in Homer City, Pa., she married Dr. Malcolm "Mac" Sexton Byers, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1950 from Philadelphia.

Dr. Byers was a physician. She had her own practice in Medford for 42 years.

She was a member of the Colony Club, the Contemporary Book Club, and the American Academy of Family Practice, Board Certified. She was the former head of Planned Parenthood in Medford, and was a former member of the Rogue Valley Country Club.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of 53 years, include three daughters, Laura Byers Richmond and Amy Byers Burns, both Medford, and Betsy Fox Byers, Central Point; two sons, Malcolm Sexton Jr., Portland, and William Peters, Beaverton; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Francis Peters, M.D.

Walter Lewis Kingman
The memorial service for Walter Lewis Kingman will be at 2 p.m. today at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Beaverton. Pastor Michael P. Bailey will officiate. Inurnment will be at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Mr. Kingman, 83, of Portland, formerly of Medford, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) in Portland.

He was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Topeka, Kan., to Edward and Nelli Belle (Howard Kingman. He attended high school and business college and met his future wife, Leora Roglitz, in Topeka, Kan. They were married Christmas Eve of 1942, in Waco, Texas, before he shipped overseas as a B-24 pilot during World War II. They lived in Medford for most of their married life and raised three sons, Steven, Greg and Mark.

Mr. Kingman was a salesman for Mid-Coast Distributors for 35 years.

He served in the Army Air Forces and participated in the Ploesti oil field raid in Romania. He was highly decorated and received numerous medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Mr. Kingman was an avid gardener and trout fisherman. He especially enjoyed preparing adolescents for confirmation at Gloria-Dei Lutheran Church in Central Point.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Portland; two sons, Greg, Portland, and Mark, Kalama, Wash.; and a granddaughter.

Arrangements: Pegg, Paxson and Spring Funeral Chapel, Beaverton.

Lois E. Holm
The memorial service for Lois Eunice Holm will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ashland. Interment will be at Lower Lake cemetery in Lower Lake, Calif.

Mrs. Holm, 84, of Talent, died Tuesday (May 27, 2003) at an Ashland foster home.

She was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Rock Falls, Ill., to Meta and Charles Puels. She was raised in Rock Falls, where she married Donald Holm on June 4, 1939. He died in 1986.

Dr. and Mrs. Holm served in the mission field in Indonesia from 1950 to 1960 before moving to Clear Lake, Calif. They returned to the mission field, serving in Tanzania, Africa from 1977 to 1980. They lived in Grand Terrace, Calif., from 1980 to 1987, when Mrs. Holm moved to Talent.

She enjoyed gardening and was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Raymond, Portland, Edward, Turlock, Calif., and Richard, Marina, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Hulse, Ashland, and Karen Bray, Salt Lake City, Utah; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, an infant daughter, a brother, and six sisters.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Roy M. Martin
Wendy E. Martin
The funeral for Roy M. and Wendy E. Martin will be at 2 p.m. Monday with interment at Kings Highway cemetery in Milford, Conn. A memorial service will be held in Ashland at a later date.

Roy M. Martin, 49, and Wendy E. Martin, 51, of Salem, formerly of Ashland, died Monday (May 26, 2003) in a car accident near Tyler, Texas.

Roy Martin was born Nov. 14, 1953, in New Haven, Conn., to John and Eleanor Martin of Florida. On April 28, 1972, he married Wendy E Martin. The Martins moved to Ashland in 1986, where their children attended school. They moved to Salem in 1995, where they lived until earlier this month when they started traveling to job sites again.

Roy Martin was an electrician working on jobs all over the country. He was a member of IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) for more than 30 year.

Wendy Martin was born Jan. 1, 1952, in New Haven Conn., to Lester and Ellen Roy. She was an escrow technician working for Jackson County Title. She transferred to Land America Title office in Salem in 1995.

Roy Martin was a member of the Scottish Rite of the Masonic Temple and the Hillah Temple.

Wendy Martin was known for her apple pies.

Both were active members in US Pony Club, Sun Catchers and Sun Rovers.

They enjoyed traveling, family and friends.

Survivors include a daughter: Melissa Lockhart, Tyler, Texas; a son, Jason Martin, Anchorage, Alaska; and two grandchildren. Roy Martin is also survived by his parents, John and Eleanor Martin, in Florida; and a brother, Jack, Santa Fe, N.M. Wendy Martin is also survived by her mother, Ellen Roy, Milford, Conn.; and two brothers, Don Roy and Kevin Roy, both of Clarkston, Mich. She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Roy.

Loren Wendell Dow
Loren Wendell Dow, 72, of Medford, died Tuesday (May 27, 2003) at his home. A private service will be held. Interment will be in Littleton cemetery in Littleton, Colo.

He was born Oct. 21, 1930, in Mount Hope, Kan., to Fred and Marguerite Dow.

Mr. Dow was a certified public accountant, retiring in 1994 in Denver. He moved to the Rogue Valley eight years ago from Denver.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn, Medford; three daughters; five sisters; and three brothers.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Dorothy Eva Blanchette
Dorothy Eva (Holgate) Blanchette, 57, of Yreka, Calif., formerly of Central Point, died Tuesday (May 27, 2003) in Yreka, Calif. No service is planned.

She was born March 31, 1946, in Germany, to Kenneth and Ingrid (Jenny) Holgate. The family moved to Tillamook in 1947, and to Jackson County in 1952.

Ms. Blanchette attended school in Central Point and graduated from Crater High School. She moved to California in 1988.

She is survived by her father and stepmother, Kenneth and Donna Holgate.

Arrangements: Girdner Funeral Chapel, Yreka, Calif.

Ann Luetke Stimson
Ann Luetke Stimson, 92, of Medford, died Monday (May 26, 2003) at a local foster care home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born June 30, 1910, in Minneapolis, to Henry and Jeannette (Stuhr) Luetke. She attended school in Zap, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1927. She also attended Jamestown College. In 1936, in Crosslake, Minn., she married Henry Long "Jack" Stimson, who died in 1955. They moved to Gold Hill in 1946 from Seattle, and to Medford in 1950.

Mrs. Stimson was a U.S. Army inspector for Boeing Aircraft from 1942 to 1945. She worked as a real estate agent in Medford for many years.

She enjoyed reading, playing cards and dancing.

Survivors include a nephew, Ronald Dean Stimson, Phoenix; and a niece, Ann Marly Nelson, Sunnyvale, Calif. She was preceded in death by a sister, Fay Jeannette Stimson.
