Grace Mary Clark
Grace Mary Clark, 81, of Eagle Point, died Sunday (May 25, 2003) at her home. No service is planned. Private inurnment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

She was born June 26, 1921, in Modesto, Calif., to Henry Y. and Zovart (Normart) Simidian. On July 9, 1941, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., she married Don Clark, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1949 from California.

Mrs. Clark was a volunteer at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She enjoyed knitting and working all kinds of puzzles.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Donald L., and Harold, both Snohomish, Wash., and Robert, Corvallis; a brother, Harold Y. Simidian, Modesto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Lenard Lester Martin
The graveside service for Lenard Lester Martin will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Pastor Jim York will officiate. The Honor Guard will provide military honors.

Mr. Martin, 74, of Grants Pass, died Monday (May 26, 2003) at a Grants Pass adult foster care home.

He was born July 8, 1928, in Carson, N.D. On May 20, 1962, in Las Vegas, he married Lillie Van Meter, who died in 1999.

Mr. Martin worked as a mechanic at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). He retired in 1984, and moved to Grants Pass from Los Angeles.

He was a member of Early Days Gas Engine and Tractor Association, Branch 9.

Mr. Martin enjoyed collecting and restoring engines and antique farm equipment.

Survivors include a son, Jimmy, Kelso, Wash.; a sister, Lucille Bjerkelund, Lakeview; two brothers, Lavern and Ernie, both Hillsboro; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Richard Harold Stierlen
Richard Harold Stierlen, 88, of Shady Cove, died Tuesday (May 27, 2003) at his home. A private service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born July 12, 1914, in Bentonville, Ark., to Jacob and Mary (Pickering) Stierlen. On Feb. 7, 1941, in Las Vegas, Nev., he married Imogene P. Cromwell, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1991 from Fresno, Calif.

Mr. Stierlen worked for Chevron Corp. for 33 years.

He enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Deborah J. Simontacchi, Lakeview; a son, Richard G., Williamsburg, Pa.; two sisters, Florence Horst, El Cajon, Calif., and Crystal McMaster, Portland; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Edith Sterling, Hilda Laird and Lillian Palmer.

Nancy C. Knox
The memorial service for Nancy C. Knox will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ashland First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Scott Delgarno will officiate.

Mrs. Knox, 77, of Ashland, died May 22, 2003, in Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born Nancy Sears Chambers on April 14, 1926, in Whittier, Calif., the daughter of Herbert and Rena Chambers. She attended schools in Whittier, Calif. On June 20, 1945, in Whittier, Calif., she married Warren B. Knox, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1991.

Mrs. Knox was a homemaker and a student counselor. She retired in 1988.

She was a member of the Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.), Potpourri and Deacons.

Mrs. Knox enjoyed reading, gardening, bridge and community volunteering.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Charles W., and John W.; a sister, Betty Dingle, Grass Valley, Calif.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lucinda Knox; and a brother, Herbert S. Chambers Jr.

Ruth Evelyn Elmore
Ruth Evelyn Elmore, 90, of Medford, died Tuesday (May 27, 2003) at her home. The graveside service will be held in Pleasanton, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Ruth Terry on Jan. 12, 1913, in Fullerton, Neb. She married Gordon Karl Elmore Sr. They were married 59 years, and lived in Pleasanton, Calif., for a number of years while he attended to his race track duties. Before that, they lived in Grants Pass for 35 years. He died in 1995.

Mrs. Elmore enjoyed being a homemaker and caring for her animals.

Survivors include three daughters, Janice M. McMillan and Judith M. Amorde, both Medford, and Darlene Miller, Seneca; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard L., and Gordon "Buster" Karl Jr.

Wallace D. ‘Wally’ Palmer
The memorial service for Wallace D. "Wally" Palmer will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Provolt Community Church. Pastor Russ Gibson will officiate. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sparlin cemetery in Williams.

Mr. Palmer, 87, of Provolt, died Sunday (May 25, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Provolt Community Church, 13480 Williams Highway, Grants Pass, OR 97527.

He was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Yreka, Calif. His family moved to Grants Pass when he was 2. He attended Grants Pass schools and Pacific University, where he met his future wife, Mildred (Micky) E. Hatz. They were married April 23, 1938, in Kelso, Wash. She died in 1994.

Mr. Palmer worked for McCloud Lumber Co. in McCloud, Calif., for seven years. In 1946, he returned to Grants Pass, where he bought a dairy in Provolt. He was known as a hard-working dairyman who enjoyed sharing humorous stories with his friends.

He was an active member of Provolt Community Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Anita Boyle, Donna Palmer and Peggy Hill, all Grants Pass, and Alice Dinsdale, Fort Rock; a son Wallace "John, " Grants Pass; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hull and Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.

Gordon Allan Lonning
Gordon Allan Lonning, 67, of Eagle Point, died Monday (May 26, 2003) at his home. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born Nov. 22, 1935, in Dakota City, Iowa, to Edgar and Mabel Lonning. He attended Humboldt High School in Humboldt, Iowa. On May 29, 1954, in Humboldt, Iowa, he married Julia Beeson, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1970 from California.

Mr. Lonning owned the Eagle Market for 18 years, retiring in 1995. Before that, he was a meat merchandiser for Richard’s Food Markets from 1970-1978.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching and feeding wild birds, watching sporting events, especially the Oakland Raiders and collecting rocks and petrified wood.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, David, Oregon City; four daughters, Darla Miller, White City, Debra Lonning, Grants Pass, Dianna Horton, Winchester Bay, and Denise Hudspeth, Springfield; a sister, Sandra Pierce, in Florida; two brothers, Ronald, Hubbard, and Richard, Humboldt, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne; and two sisters, Joyce Hornsby and Nancy Dickens.

James Lee Jacob
James Lee Jacob, 77, of Roseburg, formerly of Medford, died Friday (May 23, 2003) in Roseburg. No service is planned. Interment will be at Roseburg National cemetery.

He was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Paducah, Ky., to Lee and Gertrude (Johnson) Jacob. He moved to Medford in 1958. On May 11, 1968, in Medford, he married Eleanor Morris, who survives. They moved to Roseburg in January of this year.

Mr. Jacob worked for Medford School District 549C until his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Marines Corps during World War II, and fought on Guadalcanal.

Mr. Jacob was a member of Roseburg Christian Fellowship.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 35 years, include three daughters, Gayla Burke, Medford, Ellen Jacob, Portland and Kay Huff, Roseburg; a son, Mike, San Diego; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Firs, Sutherlin.

Former D.A. Paul Haviland, 85
Paul William Haviland, a former Jackson County district attorney who was influential in local charities and development of high-school sports, died Sunday in Medford. He was 89.

Haviland was deeply involved for decades in the Providence Medford Medical Center and St. Mary’s High School.

He also helped spearhead the building of Spiegelberg Stadium at what is now South Medford High School and was one of the founders of the Medford Linebackers Club, a large booster organization.

Haviland died at Providence Medford Medical Center after battling a series of illnesses, family members said.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford.

Haviland was born March 24, 1914, in Portland and graduated from what is now the Lewis and Clark Law School in 1939.

After serving as an FBI special agent in Chicago and superintendent of the Delaware State Police, Haviland moved to Medford 1947 to become a deputy district attorney.

He was the district attorney here within two years, then opened a private practice in 1952. He retired in 1987.

During his time in Medford, Haviland was a director or president of the Medford Kiwanis Club, the Jackson County Young Republicans, the Medford United Way, Medford Elks Lodge, and the Providence Hospital Advisory Board.

He received several community service awards, including ones from the Medford Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1963 and from the Sisters of Providence in 1985.

"He was a pillar of this community for 40 years, " said son-in-law Clifford Ruona, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. "His footprints will be here for a long time."

Haviland is survived by a daughter, Anne Ruona, of Palos Verdes; a brother, John, of Lake Oswego; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Haviland was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 2000.

Kirk Lloyd West
The funeral service for Kirk Lloyd West will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Winema Hall at the Siskiyou County Fairgrounds in Yreka, Calif. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery in Yreka. Family and friends will gather afterward for a potluck at Winema Hall.

Mr. West, 44, of Medford, died Friday (May 23, 2003) near Horse Creek, Calif.

He was born June 20, 1958, in Portland, the son of Lee and Dell West. The family moved the next year to Seiad Valley, Calif. He graduated from Happy Camp High School in 1976. He was a four-year letterman in baseball.

In 1987, in Horse Creek, he married Janet Everest, who survives. They moved to Medford in 2001.

Mr. West and his brother-in-law, Tony Bishop, started Seiad Card Lock in 1991, which they owned and operated for 10 years. He also worked as a self-employed timber faller in Seiad Valley.

Mr. West was a volunteer firefighter and T-ball coach in Seiad Valley.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, church activities and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors, in addition to his wife and parents, include four sons, David, Ryder, Tyler and Jack West, all of Medford; one brother, Lonny West, Yreka; and two sisters, Karen Sherman, Montague, Calif., and Kathy Bishop, Fort Jones, Calif.

Arrangements: Girdner Funeral Chapel, Yreka.

Donald L. Miller
The memorial service for Donald L. Miller will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Ashland.
Mr. Miller, 69, of Chiloquin, died Saturday (May 24, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

He was born Feb. 6, 1934, in Tooele, Utah, the son of Margaret and John Miller. He attended Fresno State College in California. He lived in Brea, Calif., and Crescent City, Calif.

On Dec. 3, 1982, in Ashland, he married Donna Petitt, who survives. They lived in Ashland for 12 years before moving to Chiloquin in 1994.

Mr. Miller owned and operated sporting goods stores in Brookings and Crescent City, Calif.

He served in the U.S. Navy, for which he played football.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Scott Alan Miller, Yorba Linda, Calif., and Steven Don Miller, Brea, Calif.; two stepsons, Gary Eggers, Sacramento, Calif., and Greg Eggers, Chiloquin; one stepdaughter, Holly Eggers, Portland; one brother, Chauncey Miller, Chiloquin; one sister, Glenna Smith, Florida, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harris Miller.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
