Bernard Theril Schultz
A graveside service for Bernard Theril Schultz will be held at 2 p.m. today at Eagle Point National cemetery. Pastor Tim Olson of Bethel Assembly of God in Medford will officiate. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Schultz, 79, of Medford, died Monday (Aug. 12, 2002) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Assembly of God Bus Ministry, 1225 E. McAndrews Road, Medford, OR 97504; or Providence Foundation Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born on Feb. 2, 1923, in Loma, N.D., a son of Gussie and Inger Schultz. On Oct. 25, 1963, in Carson City, Nev., he married Barbara Shere, who survives.

He had lived in the Rogue Valley since 1952, moving from Klamath Falls.

Mr. Schultz served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at Pepsi Cola for 20 years. He also owned and operated Bernie’s Cakes and Cookies in Medford before retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the Bethel Assembly of God church.

He enjoyed reading the Bible and making toys for his grandchildren and children in Sunday school as well as talking with friends.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Keith, Vancouver, Wash., Fred Winans, Salt Lake City, Terry Winans, Puyallap, Wash., and Tony Cobb, Central Point; two daughters, Lynda Solorio, Medford, and Marilyn McLaren, Crestline, Calif.; a brother, Hugh, Paisley; a sister, Edna Anderson, Roseville, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Dianna Hewitt and Debra St. Germain; four brothers, Norris, Arlo, Don and Ray; a sister, Vivian Lange; and an infant granddaughter.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory, Medford.

Wallace ‘Wally’ Burton West
A celebration of life for Wallace "Wally" Burton West will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in Phaff Park at Sixth and Manzanita streets in Central Point.

Mr. West, 72, of Central Point, died Saturday (Aug. 10, 2002).

Memorial contributions may be made to Bear Creek Greenway equestrian trail project, P.O. Box 3794, Central Point, OR 97502.

He was born on Nov. 5, 1929, in Roseburg, a son of James and Echo West. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Central Point, where Mr. West spent the rest of his life.

He is the grandson of Oregon pioneers Fredrick and Etta Waterman, who settled the town of Bancroft in Coos County. The family maintains the original homestead, which includes a family cemetery.

He attended school in Central Point and was captain of the football and basketball teams.

Mr. West was the primary builder of the Bear Creek Greenway equestrian trail. He worked for the Steve Wilson logging company for 27 years, and owned and operated a road-building business.

He was a lifetime member of the Jackson County Horseman Association and was a pilot, sportsman, game hunter and horseman.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Joan, include two daughters, Jeanean West Craig, Salem, and Pamela Sarah Goldman, Jacksonville; a son, Thomas Clarence, Central Point; two stepdaughters, Laura Yvonne Wiseman, Medford, and Lisa Ann Fox, Butte Falls; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Southern Oregon Cremation Services, Grants Pass.

Nedra L. Basham
A graveside service for Nedra L. Basham will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Glendale cemetery in Glendale. Pastor Terry Best of the Glendale Assembly of God church will officiate.

Mrs. Basham, 45, of Glendale, died Monday (Aug. 12, 2002) at her home.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1956, in Lovington, N.M., a daughter of James and Rose Bagwell. On Feb. 6, 1976, in Globe, Ariz., she married Jimmy "Buster" Basham, who survives.

She enjoyed crocheting, crafts and arranging flowers.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Arthur Dustin, Glendale; a daughter, Samantha Lynn Basham Robertson, Anderson, Calif.; a brother, James Buddy Bagwell, Payson, Ariz.; three sisters, Tina Bagwell Sims, Cotton City, N.M., Loretta Bagwell Ward, Animas, N.M., and Canita Bagwell Mabbit, Franklin, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Tresa Bagwell.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Col. Harlan Trent
A memorial service for Col. Harlan E. Trent will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Central Valley Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 3008, Princeton, N.J. 08543-3008.

Col. Trent, 77, of White City, died Wednesday (Aug. 14, 2002) at his home.

He was born March 23, 1925, in Bottineau, N.D.

He was a member of P Company, 4th Raider Battalion. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in July 1943. He rose through the ranks and retired to the Rogue Valley in September 1971.

His service included overseas duty in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was awarded several medals, including the Purple Heart.

Upon retirement, he entered Southern Oregon College, earning a master’s degree in education in 1973. He worked for the state Employment Division, retiring again in 1981. After a stint of self-employment, he worked for the Army 6th Division in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1986 to 1987. He also served at the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary in White City until 1993 in the psychology department, doing research in biofeedback with post-traumatic stress disorder victims of the Vietnam War. After retiring again, he purchased a service station and auto repair business.

He served on the Ashland Planning Commission in 1977. He also was an early member of the Rogue Valley Transportation District board. From 1976 to 1985, he was active in community justice programs as well as on several other committees.

He is survived by his wife, Diane, White City; a daughter, Marta, and a son, Royal; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Frank Oliver Sullivant
A graveside service for Frank Oliver Sullivant will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Retired pastor Darrell Hooten of Medford Christian Church will officiate.

Mr. Sullivant, 56, of Eagle Point, died Tuesday (Aug. 13, 2002) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1945, in Grants Pass, a son of Melvin and Margaret (Ford) Sullivant. He lived in the Rogue Valley all of his life.

Mr. Sullivant worked in construction and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include four sons, Carl, Seattle, Melvin, Medford, Tommy Cousins, Seattle, and Thomas McMahan, Christmas Valley; a daughter, Stacy McMahan, Christmas Valley; two sisters, Barbara Lines, Medford, and Ethel Hamrick, Eagle Point; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris, Medford. Friends may pay their respects from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Conger-Morris Chapel.

Elaine Phyllis Watkins
The memorial service for Elaine Phyllis Watkins will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Takilma Bible Church in Cave Junction. Pastor Dan Robinson will officiate.

Mrs. Watkins, 63, of Cave Junction, died Sunday (Aug. 11, 2002) at Hopeful Rancho in Cave Junction.

Memorial contributions may be made to Takilma Bible Church.

She was born on May 26, 1939, in Ajo, Ariz. She married William G. "Bill" Watkins.

Mrs. Watkins moved to Cave Junction in the summer of 1979 with her husband and daughter, Jessi.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, watching the moon come up, travel, playing guitar, cooking, beadwork, figure skating, attending gem and mineral shows, listening to music and making others laugh.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, William R., Sacramento; three daughters, Chris Medley, Boise, Idaho, Rene Jordan, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Jessi, Bend; and her mother, Gladys Graham, Grants Pass.

Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives.

Rachel L. Roohr Foust
A memorial service for Rachel L. Roohr Foust will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bear Creek Church, 886 Chevy Way, Medford. The Rev. Dale Meador will officiate.

Mrs. Foust, 55, of White City, died Monday (Aug. 12, 2002) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the John Wayne Cancer Institute, Santa Monica, CA, or Rogue Valley Hospice, 2825 E. Barnett, Medford, OR 97504.

Mrs. Foust was born on Nov. 24, 1946, in Lamar, Calif., the daughter of James and Iva (Briery) Carrithers. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1966 from North Carolina. In 1970, she married David William Roohr, who died in 1994. In 1998, in Eagle Point, she married Bill Foust, who survives.

Mrs. Foust worked at Cascade Wood Products and operated a tail saw for years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, David William Roohr Jr., Eagle Point; a daughter, Kym Baldovino, Lakeview; a sister, Patricia Gray, White City; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Stanley S. Ward
Stanley S. Ward, 90, of Talent, died Thursday (Aug. 15, 2002) at Ashland Community Hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Malvina Vandervalle
Malvina Vandervalle, 90, of Ashland, died Thursday (Aug. 15, 2002) at her home.

Charles Jones
Charles Jones, 86, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Aug. 14, 2002) at his home.

John Gitzen
John Gitzen, 81, of Medford, died Tuesday (Aug. 13, 2002) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Lula Mae Loula
Lula Mae Loula, 85, of Medford, died Tuesday (Aug. 13, 2002) at her home.

Arrangements will be announced by Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford.

William James Koepke
The graveside service for William James Koepke will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National cemetery. The Rev. Bernard Andrews will officiate.

Mr. Koepke, 89, of Medford, died Friday (April 11, 2003) at Three Fountains Nursing Center in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Gospel Mission, P.O. Box 1172, Medford, OR 97501, or the First Baptist Church, 649 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Oct. 26, 1913, in Whitehall, Wis., to Frank and Frances (Gibson) Koepke. On Oct. 11, 1946, in Alvin, Texas, he married Eva Gladys Ragland, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 55 years ago from Great Falls, Mont.

After settling in Medford, Mr. Koepke worked for the U.S. Weather Bureau from 1948 until his retirement in 1976.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the 143rd Field Artillery, and participated in the Bismarck Archipelago and in the liberation of the Philippines.

Mr. Koepke enjoyed fishing, gardening, classical music and spending time with the neighborhood children, who called him "Grandpa Bill."

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Doneva Pickett, Medford; and a sister, Fern Walker, Seattle. He was preceded in death by a brother, Don.

Friends may pay their respects at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

Harry Benjamin Cohen
The funeral service for Harry Benjamin Cohen of Central Point will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Havurah Shir Haddash, 185 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland.

Rabbi David Zaslow will officiate, and interment will follow in Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501.

Mr. Cohen, 86, died Saturday (April 12, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 2, 1916 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to David and Anna (Chernak) Cohen.

On Oct. 29, 1938, in New York, N.Y. he married Helen Miller, who survives.

They moved to Central Point in May 2001 from San Mateo, Calif.

Mr. Cohen was a retired supermarket manager and was affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Beverly DeLeonardis of Central Point; a son, Edward J. Cohen of Canton, Mich.; a brother, Philip Cohen, Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Ralph H. Meinel
The memorial service for Ralph H. Meinel will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Williams Community Church. Pastor Rob Culton will officiate.
Mr. Meinel, 63, of Williams, died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at his home.

He was born July 23, 1939, in Los Angeles. On March 6, 1997, in Pasadena, Calif., he married Evelyn Priesing-Temm, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1997 from Sierraville, Calif.

Mr. Meinel was a forester with the U.S. Forest Service. He worked primarily in the Plumas, Sierra and Tahoe National Forests in Northern California.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Jeffrey, Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Kristin Hammer, Issaquah, Wash., and Rachel Meinel, Auburn, Wash.; five stepchildren, Mike Terri, Ed, Greg and Peter; and one grandchild.

Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.
