Leon Jay Weissman
The memorial service for Leon Jay Weissman will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rogue Valley Christian Church in Medford. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate.

Mr. Weissman, 69, of Medford, died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) in Talent.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Jan. 10, 1934, in Bronx, N.Y., to Henry and Belle Weissman. On Feb. 18, 1992, in Vancouver, Wash., he married Gladys Robinson, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1997 from Portland.

Mr. Weissman was an appliance technician.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Wendy Flores, Gresham; three sons, Sam, Phoenix, Ariz., and Anthony and Nathaniel, both Portland; seven stepchildren, including Julie Foster, Phoenix, Tina Cooper, Medford, and Brian Cassidy, Fort Lewis, Wash.; a brother, Michael, Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Sydelle Weinstein, Delray Beach, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Edward; and a daughter, Pam Bascomb.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Mary L. Cook
Mary L. Cook, 71, of Ashland, died Thursday (April 10, 2003) at her home. The memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland at a later date. Rev. Scott Delgarno will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Chicago. She graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. On Dec. 8, 1956, in Elmhurst, Ill., she married Ned Cook, who died in 1982.

Mrs. Cook was a homemaker and a former flight attendant with American Airlines. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1970.

She was a member of Chapter EE of the P.E.O. Sisterhood — a philanthropic educational organization, the Tudor Guild, Ashland Raquet Club and the First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Cook enjoyed travel, reading, knitting and tennis.

Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Speller, Paris, and Tamara Bryant, Boise, Idaho; a son, William, Lafayette Hills, Pa.; a sister, Jane Robins, Elmhurst, Ill.; a brother, Warner Whitney, Wheaton, Ill.; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Bettie Anita Pitts
Bettie Anita Pitts, 103, of Trail, died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at a foster care home in Medford. A private service will be held at a later date in Butte Falls cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Bettie Yarbrough on Nov. 26, 1899, in Dryan, Texas.

Ms. Pitts worked at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, Calif., during World War II. She later worked as a cook and housekeeper for various private residents and at the University of California at Los Angeles. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1956 from Whittier, Calif. In the Rogue Valley, she worked for the Espourtielle family.

She enjoyed gardening and needlecraft.

Survivors include two sons, Charles, Trail, and Norman, Jacksonville; a daughter, Anita Webster, Trail; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Isaac E., Robert E., and Harold E. Pitts.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Mitchel K. Moore
The memorial service for Mitchel K. Moore will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Table Rock Christian Fellowship. Pastor Larry Baker will officiate.

Mr. Moore, 46, of White City, died Saturday (April 12, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Naval Sea Cadets or the Navy League, 3070 Ross Lane, Central Point, OR 97502.

He was born July 29, 1956, in Roseburg, to Keith and Virginia Parrett Moore. He graduated from North Medford High School in 1974 and attended what is now Southern Oregon University for one year. On June 16, 1984, in Medford, he married Julie Pringle, who survives.

Mr. Moore sold insurance and worked in the trucking industry. He lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life.

He enjoyed writing, hiking, boating and skiing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Trevor, White City; a daughter, Lindsey Moore, White City; his mother and stepfather, Ginny and Richard Card, Medford; a brother, Ron, Medford; three stepbrothers, John, David and Michael Card, all Medford; and a sister, Cassandra Moore, White City. He was preceded in death by his father, Keith Moore.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

R. Craig Dow
The memorial service for R. Craig Dow will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home in Grants Pass. Pastor Wes Winn of the First Christian Church will officiate.

Mr. Dow, 48, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (April 13, 2003) as a result of a motor vehicle accident in Wolf Creek.

He was born Jan. 19, 1955, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Patrick and Sylvia Dow. He moved to Grants Pass in 1986 from Santa Rosa, Calif.

Mr. Dow enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, camping and making music.

Survivors include two daughters, Lacey Dow, Grants Pass, and Zandra Siri, Elko, Nev.; two sons, Isaac and Elisha, both Grants Pass; two brothers, Dwight and Kelly, both Socorro, N.M.; and two sisters, India McDaniel, Goddard, Kan., and Sherrie Breck, Denver.

Arrangements: Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Betty Jean Krueger
The memorial service for Betty Jean Krueger will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ocean View cemetery in Coos Bay.

Mrs. Krueger, 65, of Central Point, died Tuesday (April 15, 2003) at her home.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris, Central Point.

Clyde L. McDaniel
The funeral for Clyde L. McDaniel will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren, Ark.

Mr. McDaniel, 77, of Van Buren, Ark., formerly of the Rogue Valley, died Monday (April 14, 2003) at a hospital in Fort Smith, Ark.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 4929 Industrial Park Road, Van Buren, AR 72956.

He was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Edward and Lydia McDaniel.

Mr. McDaniel was an installer/repairman for Pacific Northwest Bell in Medford, retiring after 37 years of service.

He was a World War II veteran.

Mr. McDaniel was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8845, Disabled American Veterans Commander’s Club, Elks Lodge No. 944 of Ashland, and Communications Workers of America.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Eve; a son, Russell, Van Buren, Ark.; a daughter, Patty Price, Ratcliff, Ark.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry.

Arrangements: Ocker Funeral Home, Van Buren, Ark.

Erma Ruby White Burton
The memorial service for Erma Ruby White Burton will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris Medford Chapel. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate. Interment will be in Acacia Court at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Burton, 92, of Medford, died Friday (April 11, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 607 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501, or Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

She was born Feb. 4, 1911, in Wilsey, Kan., to Theodore and Edna (Dargatz) Bersuch. She graduated from Topeka High School in Kansas and attended Kansas University. On Oct. 1, 1934, in Boonville, Mo., she married Lawrence A. White, who died in 1977. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1949 from Anchorage, Alaska. Prior to that she lived in Lynwood, Calif., and Medical Lake, Wash. In 1986, in Medford, she married C. Ivan Burton, who died in 1993.

In Medford, she and her first husband, Lawrence, established and operated The Candy Kettle, The Clock Cafe' and later The White House coffee shop. In Grants Pass, they owned and operated The Downtowner. They also owned a restaurant and candy store in Anchorage

Mrs. Burton was a charter member of the original Methodist Church established in Anchorage, Alaska. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Medford, and a member of the church’s women’s groups. She was also a member of the Republican Women and the Daughters of the Nile, Zuleima Temple.

She was a 1950s cancer survivor. She enjoyed gardening, current affairs, pinochle and entertaining.

Survivors include a son, L. Neil White, Medford; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.

Ray W. Straw
The funeral for Ray W. Straw will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. Pastor Dwayne Robinson of Ashland First Baptist Church will officiate.

Mr. Straw, 84, of Ashland, died Monday (April 14, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

He was born July 6, 1918, in Philadelphia. On Aug. 3, 1938, in Bel Air, Md., he married Claudine, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1975.

Mr. Straw was a real estate broker in Reseda, Calif., and a window treatment salesman at Fashion Floors in Medford.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Pat Froschauer, Ashland; a son, Don, Eagle Point; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Swartz.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Hazel D. Roderick
The graveside service for Hazel D. Roderick will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford.

Mrs. Roderick, 94, of Citrus Heights, Calif., formerly of the Rogue Valley, died March 11, 2003, at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Asante Hospice, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504, or the American Cancer Society, c/o Research, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Sept. 21, 1908, in Watonga, Okla. She married James A. Roderick, who died in 1964. She lived in the Rogue Valley from 1947 to 1989.

Mrs. Roderick worked at JC Penney in Medford for many years before her retirement.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Kemp, Paradise, Calif., and Dean Duncan, Rio Linda, Calif.; two sisters, Delores Curtain, Enid, Okla., and Corinne Schlanger, Midwest City, Okla.; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Homer Herschel Jones
The memorial service for Homer Herschel Jones will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ, 5255 Table Rock Road. Carlos Pena will officiate.

Mr. Jones, 82, of Medford, died Sunday (April 13, 2003) at Hearthstone in Medford.

He was born June 17, 1920, in Newton, Kan., to Jesse and Ruth (Kinzy) Jones. He grew up in Kansas and received his accounting education in Texas. In December 1989, in Reno, Nev., he married Claudine Wright, who survives. They moved to Oregon from California in 1990.

Mr. Jones was an accountant and office manager, mainly in the automobile industry.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Jones enjoyed traveling.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a sister, Dorothy Metcalf, Kan.

Phyllis Faunette Rose
The graveside service for Phyllis Faunette Rose will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mrs. Rose, 66, of Medford, died Saturday (April 12, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul, 2424 N. Pacific Highway, Medford, OR 97501, or C.A.T.S. (Committed Alliance to Strays), P.O. Box 56, Medford, OR 97501-0004.

She was born Feb. 1, 1937, in White City, to Robert and Nellie (Schindler) Sutton. She graduated from Medford High School in 1955. On April 21, 1968, in Gold Hill, she married Jess Rose, who survives.

Mrs. Rose volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul and was a member of the Ladies of the Moose Lodge.

She enjoyed gardening, animals, watching golf and collecting trinkets for her home.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include four sons, Michael and David Moore, both Medford, Philip Moore, Central Point, and Paul Moore, McMinnville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Moore; four brothers and two sisters.

Friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Myrtle (Martin) Wikkerink
Myrtle Faye (Martin) Wikkerink, 95, of Central Point, died Saturday (April 12, 2003) at Glass Barn foster home. The graveside service will be held at the Dover, Kan., cemetery at a later date.

She was born Sept. 15, 1907, in Plymouth, Ind., one of 12 children of Frank W. and Dora E. Martin. When she was 1 year old, the family moved to Lebanon, Kan., where she was raised.

Mrs. Wikkerink moved to Topeka, Kan., where she attended Stricklers Business School. After school, she worked for Santa Fe Railway, an insurance company and Griffith Blair Realty.

In 1936, she met and married William Wikkerink of Topeka, Kan. He died in 1971.

Mrs. Wikkerink moved to Fountain Plaza retirement home in 1991, where she lived for the past four years until, with failing health, she moved to the foster home.

Survivors include a son, Robert, Shady Cove; five sisters, Doris Schuetz, Yucaipa, Calif., Minnie Wilbert, Atascadero, Calif., Pauline Shaw, Minneapolis, Helen Bloomfield, Eskridge, Kan., and Erma Brooks, Topeka, Kan.; four grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.
