Harry Christiansen
The graveside service for Harry Christiansen will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, Calif.

Mr. Christiansen, 89, of Medford, died Sunday (March 30, 2003) at Rogue Valley Manor in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Manor Health Center Fund or Rogue Valley Manor Transportation Fund, c/o Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home, 141 N.W. C St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

He was born Jan. 14, 1914, in Bakersfield, Calif. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1937 from Stanford University.

Mr. Christian and his brother co-owned and operated University Creameries, a restaurant and ice cream manufacturing firm, in Palo Alto, Calif. He moved to Grants Pass to operate and manage Oregon Caves Park in Cave Junction until his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

Mr. Christian was a member of American Legion Post 375 in Palo Alto, Calif. He was a past member of the Rogue Community College Board and the Grants Pass Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife, Louise, Medford; a daughter, Sharon Mendonsa, Salem; a son, Chris, Alameda, Calif.; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine.

Arrangements: Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Edward Andrew Holtgrave
Edward Andrew Holtgrave, 81, of Talent, died Sunday (March 30, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Advocacy Center, 816 W. 10th St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born May 1, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., to Edward Andrew and Emily (Miller) Holtgrave Sr. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1951 from Whittier, Calif. On Jan. 20, 1996, in Talent, he married Marilyn Wilson, who survives.

Mr. Holtgrave was a civil engineer at Southern Oregon University for 16 years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Holtgrave enjoyed fishing and camping.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, William, Medford; a daughter, Cindy Niedermeyer, Central Point; four stepchildren, Beth Williams, Huntington Beach, Calif., Melissa Van Ert, Brea, Calif., Sara Williams, Portland, and David Williams, Portland; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alan.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Pike G. Grubbs
The memorial service for Pike G. Grubbs will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Grubbs, 73, of Medford, died Monday (March 31, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association, One G Club, P.O. Box 882, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

He was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Spur, Texas, to William M. "Bud" and Essie Grubbs. He graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1947 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Grubbs entered Aviation Cadet Navigator training in 1952 and received his commission and wings in 1953. In 1955, he entered Air Force pilot training and received his wings in 1956. He flew 138 combat missions; 100 over North Vietnam and 38 over Laos in an F-105 Thunderchief. He also flew the T-33, F-86, F-100, F-105, F-4C and F-5A. He received two Distinguished Flying Crosses and 13 Air Medals. He served in the Air Force 20 years, retiring in 1968 with the rank of major.

On Feb. 28, 1969, he married Patricia F. McCaslin, who survives.

After retiring to Medford, he was a partner in Rogue Valley Skyways, working as a flight instructor and charter pilot; a corporate pilot and safety officer for Foley Roads Inc.; and a bookkeeper and counter salesperson for Loggers and Contractors Supply Inc.

He enjoyed golf and snow birding.

Survivors include two children, Lisa Green, Central Point, and Mike Boye', Canyonville; two sisters, Roena Frazier, Medford, and Kathy James, Fayetteville, Ark.; a brother, Neal, Borger, Texas; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter and two sisters.

Mary Joann Fagan
A celebration of the life of Mary "Joann" Fagan will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris in Medford. Pastor Carol Miller will officiate. A reception will follow.

Ms. Fagan, 62, of Medford, died Friday (March 28, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Aug. 25, 1940, in Chico, Calif., to James and Katherine (Betty) Henthorne. Her family moved to Ashland in 1946, where she attended school and met her husband. On May 30, 1961, in Reno, Nev., she married Eldon E. Fagan, who survives. They moved to Medford in 1973, where they raised their family.

Ms. Fagan was the director of business development at First American Title Insurance Co. of Oregon. She was employed by Crater Title/First American Title for 16 years. She spent the early part of her life as a homemaker.

She was active as a coach and a volunteer with the Medford American Little League.

Ms. Fagan enjoyed gardening, golf, fishing, outdoor activities and spending time with her family.

Survivors, in addition to her former husband, include four daughters, [redacted], Melissa A. Fagan and Michelle R. Schmidt, both Medford, and Cathy Thompson, Eugene; her father, James Henthorne, Castro Valley, Calif.; a sister, Betty Sellars, Central Point; and five grandchildren.

Levon Eloris Jensen
The memorial service for Levon Eloris Jensen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gold Hill United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jack Cornell will officiate.

Mrs. Jensen, 82, of Gold Hill, died Monday (March 31, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526, or Gold Hill United Methodist Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 316, Gold Hill, OR 97525.

She was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Castle Rock, Wash., to Forrest and Josephine (Lindahl) Dunton. On March 18, 1988, she married Paul S.E. Jensen, who survives.

Mrs. Jensen was the co-owner of an electrical contracting business in California. Except for 20 years in California, she lived most of her life in the Rogue Valley.

She did volunteer work at Food & Friends in Gold Hill, and visited people for the church.

Mrs. Jensen was a member of Gold Hill United Methodist Church, Amethyst Rebekah Lodge, Gold Hill, and was past president of the Sons of Norway.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include four daughters, Kristin Raskauskas, Livermore, Calif., Lynda Friedel, Seabeck, Wash., Karen Schirmer, McCall, Idaho, and Elayne Jensen-Trujillo, Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Leston Dunton, Dallas, Ore.; a sister, Kreene Armstrong, Rockaway Beach; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Dunton, and a sister, Beuna Gualco.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Samuel G. Drake
The graveside service for Samuel G. Drake will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Drake, 81, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (March 29, 2003) at his home.

He was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Delaware County, Okla. On Sept. 28, 1946, in Reno, Nev., he married Louise Welch, who survives.

Mr. Drake was an engineer at Hercules Inc., until his retirement in 1975. He moved to Selma in 1975 from Hercules, Calif., and to Grants Pass in 2000.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Drake was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a life member of OCAW International Union Martinez Local 1-5, and the Southern Oregon Indian Center.

He enjoyed woodcrafts, bird watching and feeding, traveling and camping, gardening and flowers, helping people and spending time with his family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Sheila Fahnholz, Kelseyville, Calif., Denise Smith, Vacaville, Calif., Myrtle Adams, Folsom, Calif., and Wauhilla Wilson, Grants Pass; a brother, Clarence Drake, Pryor, Okla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

David Weston Hartz
The memorial service for David Weston Hartz will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trail Christian Fellowship in Eagle Point. Pastors Don Holmes and Rick Booye will officiate.

Mr. Hartz, 61, of Medford, died Friday (March 28, 2003) at his home.

He was born May 13, 1941, in La Porte, Ind., to Frederick and Bettie Hartz. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1999 from Washington state.

Mr. Hartz worked for Triple A R.V. in Medford and also for the National Association of Self Employed.

He served in the Army National Guard.

Mr. Hartz attended Trail Christian Fellowship and Rogue Valley Fellowship. He was a member of AARP, the National Association of Self Employed, the Gethsemane House of Prayer and was a sponsor of World Vision.

He enjoyed golf, travel, cooking and ethnic food.

Survivors include his former wife, Charlene Hartz McFall, Eagle Point; a son, Daniel Weston, Medford; a daughter, Gayla Beth Mahon, Medford; a brother, Jackiebob, Simi Valley, Calif.; and one grandson.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Albert Louis Hosier
Albert Louis Hosier, 85, of Medford, died Friday (March 28, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

He was born March 8, 1918, in Santa Cruz, Calif., to Louis and Ida Hosier. He attended schools in Santa Cruz, Calif. On May 16, 1941, in Reno, Nev., he married Edith Helen-May Snyder, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1972 from California.

Mr. Hosier worked in the redwoods most of his life.

He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II.

Mr. Hosier enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing at Lost Creek Lake.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 61 years, include two daughters, Helen Ann Chandler, Central Point, and Ida Louise Hosier, Las Vegas; a son, Mike, Shady Cove; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by all of his sisters and brothers.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Fern Lorraine Kappes
Fern Lorraine Kappes, 39, of White City, died Saturday (March 29, 2003) at her home. A private service will be held.

She was born Aug. 2, 1963, in Medford, to William and Joann Hawkins Whitmill. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1986 from Colton.

Ms. Kappes enjoyed crocheting and collecting knickknacks.

Survivors include a son, Caleb, White City; her mother, Joann Chaney, White City; her father, William Whitmill, Coos Bay; and a sister, Diana Chaney, White City.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Patsyjane O’Malley
Patsyjane H. O’Malley, 75, sister of Peggyann Hutchinson, Medford, died March 24, 2003, in Jacksonville, Fla. Death was because of a heart attack.

Mrs. O’Malley, a registered dietitian, retired from St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville several years ago. She was a frequent Medford visitor.

She was born March 27, 1927, in Kalispell, Mont., a daughter of Ansley and Ellen D. Hutchinson. She grew up in Montana, Nebraska and New Mexico.

Mrs. O’Malley was a graduate of Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and the University of New Mexico. She took her internship in administrative dietetics at Mills College, Oakland, Calif.

Prior to moving to Florida in 1977, she was employed in Indiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

In addition to professional memberships, she was active in the North Florida Railroad Historic Society, serving in the local chapter’s crew during the group’s summer railroad excursions.

She financially supported numerous educational and nonprofit organizations including three scholarships annually to the University of New Mexico, one of which was endowed, and an endowed graduate scholarship in administrative dietetics with the American Dietetics Association.

Her only survivor is her sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 85 S. Holly St., Medford, OR 97501.

Her ashes will be scattered in Idaho, where she and her late husband, William J. O’Malley, spent many vacations fishing and horseback riding in wilderness areas. A service is planned in Florida in late April.

Sarah Eleanor Penland
The memorial service for Sarah Eleanor Penland will be at 5 p.m. Friday at the People’s Christian Fellowship, 147 Auto Center Court, Modesto, Calif. Inurnment will be at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Penland, 74, of Modesto, Calif., formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (April 1, 2003) at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gospel Mission, 1400 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto, CA 95354.

She was born May 10, 1928, in Medford. She lived in Modesto for 23 years.

Mrs. Penland was a telephone operator with AT&T; for 21 years.

She was a member of the People’s Christian Fellowship in Modesto.

Survivors include two sons, Donald, Patterson, Calif., and George, Drain; three daughters, Suzanne Hammons, Central Point, and Mary Garber and Patricia Hunt, both Modesto, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillview Funeral Chapel, Patterson, Calif.
