Herbert Earl Craft
Herbert Earl Craft, 78, of Ashland, died Tuesday (April 1, 2003) at Ashland Community Hospital. A private service is planned. Inurnment will be in Inglewood Park cemetery in Inglewood, Calif.

He was born March 23, 1925, in Los Angeles, to Jesse and Florence Craft. In Los Angeles, he married Martha Shetrone, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Craft was a janitor at Everest and Jennings Wheelchair Company in Los Angeles for 10 years. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1985 from Los Angeles.

He enjoyed shooting pool.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Ginter, Medford, and Anna Romo, Lancaster, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Gail Hanley, Keizer; a sister, Kathleen Starr, Glendale, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Mary L. Cook
The memorial service for Mary L. Cook will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland.

Mrs. Cook, 71, of Ashland, died April 10, 2003, at her home.

Virginia C. Warren
The graveside service for Virginia C. Warren will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Angeles Memorial Park in Port Angeles, Wash.

Ms. Warren, 86, of Portland, formerly of Medford, died Wednesday (April 16, 2003) in Portland.

She was born June 17, 1916, in Laurium, Mich., to Charles F. and Ethel V. Cayanus. The family moved to Port Angeles, Wash., when she was 7. She attended Port Angeles Schools and graduated as salutatorian from Roosevelt High School in 1933. She entered the Virginia Mason School of Nursing in 1933 and graduated as valedictorian in 1939. On July 20, 1940, she married William H. Warren. They later divorced. The family lived in Port Angeles from 1946 to 1955, when they moved to Medford.

Ms. Warren worked for Rogue Valley Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic in Medford for 20 years, retiring in 1981.

She attended the First Congregational and Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, William C., Central Point; two brothers, John E. Cayanus, Seattle, and Lawrence E. Cayanus, Lewisburg, W.Va.; and a sister, Marjorie C. Curtis, Portland.

Arrangements: Ross Hollywood Chapel, Portland.

Jane Valliant Holmes
Jane Valliant Holmes, 76, of Talent, died April 11, 2003, at her home. A private service will be held. Inurnment was held at Phoenix cemetery.

She was born Dec. 1, 1926, in Palo Alto, Calif., to Stanley and Louise (Clements) Garrett. On July 29, 1983, in Roseville, Calif., she married Peter Ralston Holmes, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Holmes owned and operated a small grocery store and deli in California. She moved to Talent in 2000 from San Jose, Calif.

She was a member of the P and L Seminary.

Mrs. Holmes enjoyed nature, travel, reading and playing cards.

Survivors include two sons, Randy Valliant Jones and Robert Hamilton Jones; two daughters, Linda Louise Jones, Medford, and Dana Laree Longwill-Millican, La Honda, Calif.; a brother, William Stanley Garrett; a sister, Louise Evelyn Garrett-Gautier; and five grandchildren.

Helen E. Grilley
Helen Elaine Grilley, 93, of Medford, died Wednesday (April 16, 2003) at Farmington Square in Medford. A memorial service will be held in Montana at a later date.

She was born July 25, 1909, in Antelope, Mont., to Nellie and William Crohn. She attended rural grade school and graduated from Plentywood High School in 1927.

Mrs. Grilley taught in rural schools for five years before attending Teacher’s College in Billings, Mont., where she received a two-year degree. She continued teaching for 15 years and earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Montana University in Billings. In 1949, she earned a master’s degree in education from Eastern Montana University, and for the next 14 years was a teaching supervisor in Oregon, Montana and California. She earned her doctorate in 1966 and taught at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. She was also a professor at Eastern Montana University in Billings for eight years.

During the summer, she managed Echo Lake Cabins in Montana.

Mrs. Grilley traveled extensively and visited six continents.

Survivors include two daughters, Idamarie Barnes, Medford, and Pat Dake, Big Fork, Mont.; a brother, Louis Crohn, Big Fork, Mont.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Marjorie G. Brown
Marjorie G. Brown, 79, of Grants Pass, died Monday (April 14, 2003) at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. No service is planned. Interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

She was born May 17, 1923, in Montreal. On July 3, 1962, in Reno, Nev., she married Donald D. Brown, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 22 years ago from San Mateo, Calif.

Mrs. Brown was a homemaker who enjoyed needlework.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Richard Scafire, Las Vegas, and John Scafire, San Bruno, Calif.; two daughters, Debora Scafire, Sparks, Nev., and Janet Tubbs, Clearlake Highlands, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Patricia Louise Harlacher
Patricia Louise Harlacher, 74, of Medford, died Wednesday (April 16, 2003) at her home. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Cedarlawn Cremation Garden at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Public Library, 413 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born March 8, 1929, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, to Paul S. and Elizabeth Francis (Burtscher) Harlacher. She attended Sacred Heart Girls School in Akron, Ohio.

Ms. Harlacher was a bookkeeper in the office of the corporate controller, in Orange County, Calif.

She was a volunteer with the Jackson County Library and a member of the Medford and Grants Pass Miniature Clubs.

Ms. Harlacher enjoyed travel, reading, painting and building miniature doll houses.

Survivors include a son, Paul F. Callaway, Medford; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.

Harold C. Wiest
The funeral for Harold C. Wiest will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Perl Funeral Home in Siskiyou Memorial Park. Visitation will follow.

Mr. Wiest, 77, of Medford, died Thursday (March 20, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Kulm, N.D., the son of Gustaf and Elizabeth (Heckelsmiller) Wiest. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1950 from Aberdeen, S.D.

In 1957 in Medford, he married Margaret Lucille Taylor, who died in 1973. He married Vivian Naset in 1994 in Moorehead, Minn. She survives.

He was a mill worker until he retired in the late 1980s. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and again from 1947 to 1950.

He enjoyed traveling, fishing, reading and bowling.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sisters, Hazel Mellor, Central Point, and Grace Russell, Grants Pass; a son, Ed Wiest, Clinton, Md.; a brother, Luther Wiest, Bismark, N.D.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Pearl Funeral Home, Medford.

Vella Elaine Cooper
Vella Elaine Cooper, 86, of Eugene, formerly of the Rogue Valley, died Friday (March 21, 2003). A private service will be held. Inurnment will be in Klamath Falls.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Seasonal Workers, 203 N. Oakdale Ave., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Nov. 17, 1916, in Lovelock, Nev., to Charles and Julia (Goddard) Cummings. She graduated from high school in Fillmore, Utah. On Dec. 20, 1941, she married Daniel Cooper, who died in 1948.

Mrs. Cooper was a worker’s advocate from 1978 to 1998, and a homemaker. She lived in Klamath Falls from 1941 to 1957, and in the Rogue Valley from 1957 to 1998.

She was a member of the Northwest Seasonal Workers.

Mrs. Cooper enjoyed arts, crafts and music.

Survivors include a son, Bill, Springfield; a daughter, Janelle Cooper, Oneida, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Andreason’s Cremation and Burial Service.

Dora F. Scheidecker
The memorial service for Dora F. Scheidecker was held March 12 at Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home in Butte, Mont.

Mrs. Scheidecker, 88, of Butte, formerly of Jacksonville, died March 10, 2003, at St. James Healthcare in Butte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Butte Central Library, 1100 Delaware Ave., Butte, MT 59701, or to a favorite charity.

She was born Aug. 15, 1914, in Mountain Grove, Mo., to John M. and Maude (Hatch) Wheeler. The Wheeler family moved to Garland, Wyo., and then to Billings, Mont., where she graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1932. As a young woman, she taught in one- and two-room schools for several years before her marriage to Elton Scheidecker in 1939. After raising her family, she returned to teaching and continued her education, earning a master’s degree in counseling.

Mrs. Scheidecker moved to Oregon in 1964, where she worked as a school counselor until her retirement in 1976. Retiring to Jacksonville, she embarked on another career as a volunteer quilter for the Southern Oregon Historical Society. She was the founder and guiding force of the Jacksonville Museum Quilters, and in more than 10 years there, logged more than 8, 000 volunteer hours.

She earned national recognition over the years for her expertise in quilting and her stories and knowledge of historical quilts.

She was a frequent lecturer on the topic of quilts, and was featured in several national craft and quilting magazines during the 1980s.

After her husband’s death in 1988, Mrs. Scheidecker moved to a retirement village in Beaverton where she lived until April of 2002, when she moved to Butte to be near her family.

Survivors include two sons, Don, Butte, and John; and eight grandchildren.

Opal Elaine Sliger
Opal Elaine Sliger, 90, of Medford, died Sunday (April 6, 2003) at Hearthstone. No service is planned.

She was born Sept. 18, 1912, in Waldron, Ark., to John and Evelyn (Black) Center. On May 24, 1931, in Waldron, Ark., she married William Sliger, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Sliger was a homemaker. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1975 from Clear Lake, Calif., and lived in Gold Hill for 25 years.

She was a member of Central Point Pentecostal Church.

Survivors, include two sons, Harry Lee, Gold Hill, and Orville "Wayne, " Fresno, Calif.; three brothers, Bill Center, in Arkansas, Jim and Buford; four sisters, Bea Thompson, Bates, Ark., Dorothy, Jeanette and Laura Mae.

Friends may pay their respect from noon to 4 p.m. today at Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Chon Olson
The funeral Mass for Chon Olson will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. David Schiferl will officiate.

Ms. Olson, 58, of Medford, died Wednesday (April 2, 2003) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 449 S. Ivy St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Jan. 18, 1945, in Inchon, South Korea, to Jae Ja Kim and Gueng Pak. She attended high school and college in Seoul, South Korea. On Sept. 6, 1979, in Okinawa, Japan, she married John C. Olson. They later divorced.

Ms. Olson became a U.S. citizen in 1995.

Survivors include a son, John C. Olson Jr., Medford; two daughters, Hae Min Hwang, Seoul, S. Korea, and Miriam Olson, Bethalto, Ill.; two brothers in Seoul, S. Korea; and two sisters.

Jack L. Brown
A celebration of the life of Jack L. Brown will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Butte Falls High School gym. Pastor Wayne Denham will officiate. Inurnment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Brown, 69, of Butte Falls, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Butte Falls High School Athletic Fund, 525 Fir St., Butte Falls, OR 97522.

He was born April 30, 1933, in Holly, Colo., to Jack and Louise Brown. On Aug. 2, 1985, in Jacksonville, he married Joyce M. Drennen, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in the mid-1950s.

Mr. Brown was a teacher/coach in Medford for 23 years, and in Butte Falls for 10 years. His Butte Falls football team won the state championship in 1986 and he was named to the Medford Sports Hall of Fame for fast pitch softball.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Brown enjoyed working with children, golfing, fishing and playing poker with his friends in the evening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Jarren, Medford, James and Shad, both Butte Falls, and Drew, in Arizona; a daughter, Sally, Central Point; a brother, Wayne Denham, Redding, Calif.; a sister, Melba Bretthauer, Hillsboro; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Melvin and Floyd; and a sister, Willa Thompson.
